Show moreTwo types of sensitivity training designed to improve attitudes toward persons with disabilities were administered and their effects compared. Sensitivity training using discussion and role playing alone was compared with sensitivity training using discussion, role playing, and simulation. A quasi experimental pretest posttest nonequivalent control group design was used to evaluate the effects of treatment. Subjects were 72 6th and 7th grade students. They responded to the Attitude Toward Disabled Persons Scale Form O prior to treatment as a measure of attitudes toward persons with disabilities. All of the experimental group subjects participated in the first session using discussion and role playing (DRP). The first posttest (Form A) was administered one week after treatment. During week two, half the students from DRP were randomly assigned to become the second experimental group which participated in a disability simulation in addition to the discussion and role playing (DRP + SIM). During week three, both experimental groups (DRP and DRP + SIM) were administered the second posttest (Form B). The control group (CTL) received no treatment, but was pre- and posttested similarly. In each of six two-way ANCOVAs, treatment plus one of the demographic variables (gender, grade level in school, minority status, degree of prior contact with persons having disabilities, nature of relationship with person who is disabled, and amount of knowledge on disabilities) were between-subjects factors, time was a within-subjects factor, pretest score was the covariate, and posttest scores were the outcome measure. Since the Bonferroni procedure was used to maintain the overall Type 1 error rate at.05, p values less than.0083 were considered statistically significant. Findings included a main effect for treatment in five of six tests, with the exception of amount of knowledge. DRP + SIM had significantly higher posttest scores than DRP or CTL. None of the main effects for demographic variables or interactions between treatment and demographic variables were found to be statistically significant. A post hoc Scheffe test indicated significantly higher mean scores for subjects receiving the disability simulation than for any other group. A disordinal treatment by time interaction was found for all six ANCOVAs. All statistically significant results were also practically significant (eta^2= .11-.50). Suggestions for further research, including a person with disabilities as co-facilitator in disability awareness programs, instituting periodic reinforcement, and conducting follow-up studies of attitude change over time.

Show moreSexual experiences and freedom are basic human rights that people with disabilities are often denied. Society and those considered to be within the general public, including caregivers, family members, and professionals that work with people with disabilities, contribute to the lack of sexual experiences and opportunities people with disabilities have throughout their lifetime. This study examined the attitudes of males and females from the general public toward sexual lives for people with disabilities. Further, it explored the difference in attitudes based on disability condition, examining attitudes toward a sexual life for those with a physical disability, intellectual disability, and general or non-specified disability. Results showed that female respondents reported more positive attitudes toward females with disabilities and females without disabilities having a sex life in comparison to the attitudes male respondents reported toward males with disabilities and males without disabilities having a sex life. Additionally, respondents felt the least positive toward adults with intellectual disabilities having a sex life. Limitations of this study and implications for further research are discussed.

Show moreThe importance of employment in our society is unmistakable. The financial outcome of employment allows us to provide for ourselves and others. Furthermore, our employment status, and the work in which we engage, play a part in defining our self-concept. For many people, however, sustained employment remains elusive. The unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities is staggering, and the consequences of being without a job affects those who are unemployed, their families, and our society. There are many issues that directly challenge the employment status of people with disabilities. Some of these include funding for supported employment programs, employer bias, and the outcomes of our country's educational system. Another issue that affects the employment of individuals with disabilities is the manner in which they are prepared prior to employment and coached while on the job. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of performance feedback delivered via covert audio coaching on the job performance of supported employees. A multiple baseline design across participants and work tasks was used to evaluate the effects of the intervention on the participants' work performance (accuracy and speed of task completion). The results demonstrated that the supported employees made substantial improvements on their accuracy and speed of completing the selected work tasks. The results also showed that the improvements maintained for 4-5 weeks following the removal of the intervention.

A secondary purpose of the study was to determine if a relationship existed between the leisure/recreation variables and reported lifestyle satisfaction for individuals with cognitive exceptionalities. Leisure and recreation activities assist individuals to lead healthy lifestyles and benefit an individuals' physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development. The dependent variable used in the analyses was lifestyle satisfaction. The predictor variables were leisure/recreation awareness, barriers to leisure/recreation, and leisure/recreation participation. Data were collected from responses ( N = 54) on the Leisure Recreation Access and Lifestyle Satisfaction Inventory (LRALS) and analyzed to determine if a relationship existed between the variables using a linear regression model. The coefficient alpha reliabilities were .90 to .98 for the leisure/recreation and lifestyle satisfaction variables. The Pearson product moment correlation coefficients were .83 to .98, p < .05 for the test-retest of the inventory. Results of the statistical analyses concluded that a positive relationship existed between reported leisure/recreation awareness and reported lifestyle satisfaction for the respondents. A negative relationship existed between reported barriers to leisure/recreation activities and reported leisure/recreation participation for the respondents. A positive relationship existed between reported leisure/recreation participation and reported lifestyle satisfaction for the respondents. The predictive accuracy of a model composed of (reported leisure/recreation awareness, leisure/recreation participation, and barriers to leisure/recreation to lifestyle satisfaction) R2 = .18 was significant, F(3, 50) = 3.67, p < .05. The predictive accuracy of a model composed of (reported leisure/recreation awareness, leisure/recreation participation, barriers to leisure/recreation and demographic data to lifestyle satisfaction) R2 = .32 was significant, F(10, 43) = 2.10, p < .05. The LRALS Inventory assists individuals to report perceived leisure/recreation and lifestyle satisfaction indices. The inventory can assist service providers to plan personnel, facilities, and equipment based on consumer choices.

Two facets that engender self-determination and independence for an individual are healthy food choice and food preparation (Koponen et al., 2019; Yaddaden et al., 2019). However, healthy food choice and food preparation have received scant attention as individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) continue to face health disparities and poor health status. The purpose of this dissertation was to explore single subject experimental studies conducted on healthy food choice and food preparation from 2005 to 2022 in peer-reviewed journals. The methodology utilized a journal hand search, database search, and ancestral search. The results indicate that of the combined search of over 75,000 articles, less than 1% involved healthy food choice and/or food preparation. The results also illuminate the paucity of the research on healthy food choice and reveal that food preparation is gaining more attention in the empirical literature. The limitations of the study and implications for practice and research are also discussed.

The sample included five current students and five graduate nurses with physical or auditory impairments and 61 nursing faculty members, staff members, patients, and fellow students. The Colaizzi (1978) method of data analysis was modified to include additional information from interviews, observations, and documents. The findings revealed important concerns related to potentially unsafe nursing practice. The findings should assist nursing faculty with admission and retention decisions and development of reasonable accommodations. Recommendations for nursing programs to develop enforceable guidelines for admission and state regulatory boards of nursing to consider licensure with practice limitations are included.

Show morePreparing people with disabilities for employment is an important task. Many of these individuals have difficulty learning and performing new tasks without support or guidance. There are many accessible interventions that can increase the learning and performance of individuals with disabilities, including positive instructional, literacy based behavior interventions. A social story (Gray, 2000) is one example of a literacy-based behavioral intervention that has been effective for teaching social skills. This type of intervention typically has been used with children with autism. Several studies have used social stories to decrease disruptive behavior or teach self-help skills such as using a napkin or hand washing. Very few of the studies have examined the effects of a social story intervention for individuals with disabilities not on the autism spectrum (Sansosti & Powell-Smith, 2004). The present study was designed to examine the effects of social stories to improve the job skills of employees with developmental disabilities. Two experiments were conducted. In the first experiment a multiple baseline across subjects was employed to examine the potential of the intervention on employees' requests for materials and supplies, and any resulting improvements in their work engagement. The second experiment employed a multiple baseline across time periods, with an embedded ABAB design to assess whether the intervention would increase independence and improve "on-time" return-to-work. The results showed that employees with developmental disabilities made substantial improvements in employment skills as a result of the social story intervention, and similar improvements were observed in co-workers as well.

Forty-six participants were randomly assigned to the experimental group (n = 24) or control group (n = 22). The experimental group participated in Zumba® for 8 weeks, 3 days per week, along with completing exercise rating scales and fitness tests. Outcome measures included agility, endurance, rate of perceived exertion (RPE), exercise motivation, and exercise self-efficacy. Agility, endurance, and RPE were measured by three fitness tests; Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, the Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), and Modified Borg Dyspnoea (MBD). Physiological outcomes were measured before the intervention (pretest), 4 weeks during the intervention, and after the intervention (posttest). The experimental group completed a follow-up of all three fitness tests 2 weeks after the removal of the intervention. A paired t test assessed the continuous measures within each group.

Show moreIntervention packages combing behavioral interventions (e.g., time delay, physical prompting, or prompt fading) and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems have proven to be effective in developing communication skills for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (Charlop-Christy et al., 2002; Greenberg et al., 2014). However, both preservice and in-service speech language pathologists have limited exposure to the benefits of using behavioral interventions to teach non-vocal functional communication skills (King et al., 2014; Muharib et al., 2019). This study used a multiple probe design across participants design to examine the effects of an online training package to teach speech-language pathologists (SLP) to use a behavioral intervention that combines backward chaining and AAC systems to increase non-vocal requesting of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Two preservice SLPs completed three self-guided video modules on backward chaining and augmentative and alternative communication, engaged in role plays with an adult confederate, and participated in live feedback sessions. Once completed, preservice SLPs learned to use a backward chaining procedure with a communication board to teach children with ASD non-vocal requesting. Results showed that the online training package was effective in increasing the knowledge and skills of the preservice SLPs in using backward chaining to support AAC use and increase the child’s non-vocal requesting.

Speak for Myself™ (SFM) was developed for use at the bedside so that communication may be facilitated between patient and nurse when the patient is voiceless. The objective of this study was to evaluate Speak for Myself™ at the bedside and to measure the outcomes. This was a mixed methods, one group pre-test-post-test, quasi-experimental study. Twenty adult patients in three hospitals in South Florida agreed to use Speak for Myself™ during their acute care hospital stay (M = 8.86 hours). This group of participants (n = 20) ranged from 45 to 91 years old (males = 14; females = 6). Of the participants, 15 (75%) self-identified as European American, 2 (10%) self-identified as Hispanic, 2 (10%) self-identified as African American, and 1 (5%) self-identified as Asian. Ten of the participants (50%) were in respiratory failure. Two (10%) were receiving oxygenation measures related to unspecified complications of their illnesses. Of the remaining eight participants (40%), one each was receiving oxygenation measures due to atrial fibrillation, arteriosclerotic heart disease, cardiogenic shock, endocarditis, neck abscess, renal failure, status post seizure activity, and tongue metastasis.

Show moreWith the exponential increase of Internet usage and the embedding of multimedia content on the Web, some of the Internet resources remain inaccessible for people with disabilities. Particularly, people who are deaf or Hard of Hearing (HOH) experience inaccessible Web sites due to a lack of Closed Captioning (CC) for multimedia content on the Web, no sign language equivalents for the content on the Web, and an insufficient evaluation framework for determining if a Web page is accessible to the Hearing Impaired community. Several opportunities for accessing content needed to be rectified in order for the Hearing Impaired community to access the full benefits of the information repository on the Internet. The research contributions of this thesis are to resolve some of the Web accessibility problems being faced by the Hearing Impaired community. These objectives are to create an automated CC for the Web for multimedia content, to embed sign language equivalent for content available on the Web, to create a framework to evaluate Web accessibility for the Hearing Impaired community, and to create a social network for the Deaf community. To demonstrate the feasibility of fulfilling the above listed objectives several prototypes were implemented. These prototypes have been used in real life scenarios in order to have an objective evaluation of the proposed framework. Further, the implemented prototypes have had an impact to both the academic community and to the industry.

Show moreAfrican-American adults have been often studied and categorized, historically, as having low educational achievement. Further, they have not been attending educational offerings available to them to the same extent as other U.S. ethnic groups. This exists despite their needs and not withstanding the fact that such participation stands to greatly increase and enhance their life styles and livelihoods. One reason minority adults (and the many other adults in the general population who do not participate in educational offerings) do not participate can be traced to their perceptions of barriers to attendance. Thomas G. Darkenwald and others conducted research on this concern through the development and use of an original deterrents-to-participation scale (DPS) that was later refined (DPS-G) to identify six barriers to general adult participation in education. DPS-G, as a scale, has been used successfully by many succeeding individuals and groups in similar studies. This study used Darkenwald and Valentine's ALQ instrument, which employed their DPS-G and added demographic questions, to survey a group of Orange County, Florida African-Americans and others. Data obtained supported and provided further verification of validity and reliability of the Darkenwald and Valentine identified factors and procedure. Six hypothesis are incorporated that address the attitudinal differences between African-American adults and others concerning the Darkenwald and Valentine factors. Results showed that the African-Americans expressed stronger concerns for each of the six factors, namely: (a) lack of confidence, (b) lack of course relevance, (c) time constraints, (d) low personal priority, (e) cost factor, and (f) low personal priority. Further, the study showed that African-Americans responded more cohesively and stronger on each and every factor category than did their fellow non-Black others. Study results can be used in further research about minorities' perception of barriers to participation in adult education. Resulting information can also be used in the planning and delivery of adult education programs that attempt to ameliorate or eliminate such barriers to participation in adult education.

The advancement of computer technologies and their ubiquitous penetration in people's life make them widely available to support intensive sociocognitive rehabilitation. Additionally, computer interactions are a natural choice for people with autism who value lawful and "systematizing" tools. A number of computer-aided approaches have been developed, showing effectiveness and generalization, but little quantitative research was conducted to identify the critical factors of engaging and improving the child's interest and performance. This thesis designs an adaptive computer interaction system, called Ying, which detects learning patterns in children with ASD and explores the computer interactive possibilities. The system tailors its content based on periodic performance assessments that offer a more effective learning path for children with ASD.

In many developing countries this dual discrimination affects women's access to prevention, treatment, education, rehabilitation, and employment. Disabled women are deprived of women's traditional roles of wife, home maker, and mother. This thesis also explores the cross-cultural network of local, national, and regional self-help committees blind women have begun to assemble in response to the worldwide interest in the rights of women and the disabled. The women who are active in these organizations recognize that in order to improve the status of blind women they will have to find ways to overcome the prejudices against the disabled in mainstream groups, and become an integral component of broader movements.

In his works, Nabokov has frequently utilized representations of disability as a means to comment or critique the human condition. Throughout this project I intend to demonstrate how the narratives in both Lolita and Laughter in the Dark function as a normative force which embodies the cultural attitudes regarding disability. This is accomplished through the enforcement of a normative reading by the narrative. It is clear then that Nabakov is attempting to subvert literary conventions by using nontraditional narrators to demonstrate the relativity of normality. Throughout this project, I will be focusing on Nabakov’s use of narrator to distort the cultural line between disability and ability. Ultimately, the goal of this project is to demonstrate that current societal notions of normality and disability are outdated and arbitrary.
