This method was further developed to be congruent with the new processual paradigm foundational for this study. In order to examine the concept, a systematic random sample of 30 articles from the periodic literature of five disciplines was used (nursing, sociology, psychology, education, and business). Through a reflective analytic process twenty-nine attributes of the concept were identified and gathered into the five themes representing the concept. Two metathemes were identified, one for the concept and one for the context of the concept. To give, share, and/or have the ability to fully participate in life situations and experience well-being in the process is the definition of empower, as it emerged in the study.

Authentic presence, as identified in the study, comes from a theory of nursing developed by Anne Boykin and Savina Schoenhofer, Nursing as Caring: A Model for Transforming Practice. Authentic presence must be viewed in a philosophical context in order to be fully understood in practice. This analysis of Nursing as Caring reveals philosophical underpinnings in the theory's foundation. The primary texts of Soren Kierkegaard and Gaston Bachelard, both philosophers, are used to develop a foundation upon which is built a preliminary aesthetic framework to guide the examination of authentic presence. It is proposed that this framework reflects the meaning of the essence of abstract concepts and is demonstrated in an analysis of two poetic expressions.

Further analysis led to the apprehension of a unity of meaning: An Emancipating Togetherness--The Creation of a Caring Synchrony that Empowers a New Meaning for Living. The metaphor, A Conspiracy of Caring, conveys a theory of the meaning of nursing as the promotion of well-being.

The structure of the experience of feeling that you belong, discovered in this research with four participants, is prizing equivalent differences while illuminating light within the darkness and discovering fullness of self in community. This study demonstrates Parse's research methodology and expands the knowledge base of nursing.

The purpose of the study was to address the meaning of caring from the patient's perspective. The specific phenomenological method used was based on the work of Max van Manen (1984). A purposive sample of 8 adults, 6 women and 2 men, in an acute care setting was selected. An unstructured interview technique was used. Through structured reflection the process of caring emerged as themes. These included: nurse's knowledge, nurse's presence, involvement and commitment. Expressions of caring emerged as subthemes. The subthemes included: decision making, competent clinical skills, nurse's true presence, nurse's availability, accepting, understanding, helping and informing. A model of caring from the patient's perspective was developed.

The purpose of this study was to examine and describe the patient perspective of caring expressed by nurses through patient teaching. Twelve patients in a hospital setting shared their thoughts and feelings about caring expressed by nurses through 'explaining', as the participants preferred to call 'teaching,' during open-ended tape-recorded interviews or in writing. A qualitative descriptive content analysis method was used to analyze the descriptions. Twenty-six subcategories that emerged from the coded data were grouped into four broad categories defined as: Nurse's Way of Being; Nurse's Doing For Patient; Nurse's Being With Patient; and Nurse's Caring Affects Patient.

The analysis revealed three transcendent values, reflected in every activity: Caring, respect for the dignity of the other, and inner harmony. The analysis further revealed eight actualizing values, individually embodying the transcendent values: compassion, competence, courage, humility, honesty, commitment, trust and hope. The wholeness of the inquiry is presented using metaphor to illuminate the meaning of nursing's values in nursing practice.

The eight essential themes that emerged from the analysis of the descriptions of care for the patients in ICU are: (1) Being connected; (2) Feeling watched over; (3) Feeling the presence; (4) Feeling commitment; (5) Receiving Compassion; (6) Feeling valued as a person; (7) Receiving comfort; and (8) Experiencing Competence. Further analysis lead to the thematic phrase: The Essence of Isolation-Union while feeling the Presence and Competency of others. The unity of meaning was then discovered from analysis of the essential themes and thematic phrase. The unity of meaning which captures the experience of care for a person in the ICU setting is: The Illumination of the Human Spirit in the Celebration of Life.

This qualitative research investigation examined the lived experience for adults living with one or more chronic illnesses in the context of a community of faith with access to a faith community nurse. Interpretative hermeneutic analysis was used for the phenomenological study. Findings indicate that the adults expressed their primary essence is living in abundance while living faith and living caring. The findings from this study describe the relationship between adults living with chronic illness, the community of faith and the faith community nurse. Further, findings from this study contribute to essential knowledge necessary for developing models of health care in the community for adults living with chronic illness and nursing care in the community that are distinct and complex. Findings will also support the development of interventions in contexts of faith communities to support and strengthen adults living with one or more chronic illness. The emerging specialty practice in nursing labeled faith community nursing holds promise to come alongside current models of health care to support living in abundance.

The participants rated "remains committed to a continuing relationship" and "considers relationship before rules" as slightly important. Show moreThe purpose of this study was to evaluate student outcomes following implementation of a clinical scholar model of clinical education in one of four placement sites of a college of nursing grounded in a caring philosophy. The question guiding the study was to determine if the clinical scholar model has an influence on student perceptions and outcomes when used with second-degree accelerated BSN students. Watson's Human Caring theory, based on ten caritas processes, serves as the theoretical framework for this study (Watson, 2007). A sequential mixed-methods approach that combined quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques was implemented using a pre-experimental, post-test only design with non-equivalent groups to determine differences between the Traditional Model (TM) and Clinical Scholar Model (CSM) in clinical nursing education... Limitations of this study include low sample size and are partially due to limitations of the class size and low survey participation. Additionally, only CSM students attended a focus group, which prevented comparisons of qualitative feedback between groups. Even with these limitations, CSM students scored as well or better than TM students, indicating that the CSM could be a viable model for nursing clinical education.

Show moreWithin the current context of the healthcare environment, the charge nurse role has become very important for safety and positive outcomes. There is little known about the role from the perspective of the charge nurse. This qualitative descriptive exploratory study examined the experience of being a charge nurse in acute care practice, and describes how charge nurses live caring in their support of nurses and patients. Ray's (1989, 2006) theory of Bureaucratic Caring, Swanson's (2008) caring attributes and leadership, and Boykin and Schoenhofer's (2001) theory of Nursing as Caring provided the theoretical lenses through which study findings were viewed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 charge nurses in 4 acute care facilities. Eight themes emerged from an inductive analysis of the data describing the experience of being a charge nurse in acute care practice: Creating a Safety Net, Monitoring for Quality, Showing the Way, Completing the Puzzle, Managing the Flow, Mak ing a Difference, Putting Out Fires, and Keeping Patients Happy. Participants also were asked questions about how they provide support to staff nurses and patients. Themes that reflected how charge nurses live caring in their support of staff and patients were: Jumping in the Trenches, Nurturing Staff Growth, Offering Authentic Presence, and Looking after Nurses. Additionally, the researcher used methods of narrative inquiry to get the participants to share stories of how they lived caring in their support of nurses and patients. Recommendations included the need to elevate the visibility of the charge nurse role and its importance to the organization, and provide support for leadership development. Job descriptions and competencies for charge nurses must reflect the complexity of the environment., Charge nurse participants did not dialogue explicitly about their functions in terms of communication and intraprofessional team building. Since charge nurses have an increasing involvement with mentoring novice nurses and new staff, they would benefit from developing coaching skills. Given the current environment, their responsibilities in these areas may need to be better articulated so that they can focus on increasing these abilities.

Show moreCaring has been identified as an essential value for baccalaureate education across all programs of study. The purpose of this phenomenological research study was to investigate the lived experience of students learning caring in a college of nursing grounded in a caring philosophy. The question guiding the research was: "What is the student's experience of learning caring in a college of nursing that has caring as a central tenet in its philosophy?" This study was guided by the caring theories of Boykin and Schoenhofer (2001), Roach (2002), and the philosopher Mayeroff (1971). The researcher interviewed seven senior baccalaureate student nurses attending a public university. The nursing program at this university was grounded in a caring philosophy. The research questions explored the students' experiences of learning caring at this school of nursing. One student shared this thought with the researcher, "I knew who I was and I knew I could care about people, but I didn't know how to use caring in nursing. The educational process helped me to transfer caring to nursing." Transcripts of the audiotaped interviews were analyzed using Colaizzi's seven-step methodology. Two major themes and six sub-themes related to learning caring emerged and an exhaustive description of the students learning of caring in a caring based curriculum was developed. The two major themes identified were: Innate Knowing of Self as Caring, and Caring in the Curriculum. The first major theme of Innate Knowing of Self as Caring is supported by the sub-themes: Being present for the patient, Being open to reshape the patient's experience, and Enhanced capacity to care. The second major theme of Caring in the Curriculum is supported by the sub-themes: Clinical experiences are valuable to learning, Doing little things to express caring, and Learning activities facilitated understanding caring. Descriptions of the two major themes and six sub-themes were portrayed with verbatim stories told to the researcher by the student participants. Finally, implications for nursing education, research, practice, theory, and policy are presented for the reader.

Show moreThe purpose of the research was to explore the social process of trust between the chief nursing officer and the nurse manager in the hospital setting. The researcher used the grounded theory method to analyze the nurse manager-chief nursing officer relationship from the perspective of the nurse manager. A total of 12 participants were interviewed by the researcher. The sample consisted of nurse managers employed in hospitals in the southeastern United States. Data analysis consisted of open coding and constant comparative analysis. Resulting categories consisted of preparing to trust, co-creating trust and co-creating the trusting environment. The basic social process of the nurse manager-chief nursing officer trusting relationship in healthcare was the substantive theory of Striving to Live the Golden Rule which refers to living the nurse manager-chief nursing officer ethical relationship in a nursing environment where trust may be difficult to establish. The formal theory generated was the essential link between Striving to Live the Golden Rule to Living the Golden Rule as Unveiling the Mystery of Covenantal Trust. The overall results of this research demonstrated the process of trust between the nurse manager and chief nursing officer as essential to the overall relationship and to the success of both.

Nurse practitioners, in particular, will be instrumental in filling the gap in primary care availability engendered by the increasing specialization of physician practice and increased access to healthcare made possible by the provisions of the PPACA. The need for this study was identified through gaps in the literature related to nurse practitioner practice; specifically, the paucity of quantitative research regarding patients’ perspectives of core holistic nursing values in nurse practitioner care, and, since nursing care is by definition and tradition holistic in nature, this inquiry attempted to quantify the degree to which nurse practitioner care upholds and preserves core holistic nursing values.

New graduates expressed this value as caring promoting growth. Subsumed within the value of caring for new nurses are hope, conscience, courage, honesty, humility, empathy and human connectedness.
