Show moreChechnya and Estonia represent two cases of ethnic groups, which developed demands for independence from the former Soviet Union. This comparative study seeks to identify factors that explain why Chechnya became embroiled in a war of secession in order to achieve the Chechens' goals of independence, while Estonia was able to gain independence utilizing political strategies. The study examines historical development, legal-administrative status of the territories within the Soviet Union, international relations, economic, as well as cultural influences and institutions such as education, religion and the effects of the dissolution process of the Soviet Union on Chechnya and Estonia. Findings indicate that although similar in regards to historical experiences and the development of sustained nationalist independence movements, differences in legal/political status of each territory, traditional responses to threats of ethnic core values, foreign relations, and representation during the dissolution of the Soviet Union played important roles in the paths towards independence chosen by each group.
