In this thesis I utilize a feminist case study method to explore gender, race, authenticity, and nationalism in the context of globalization. Each year, Guatemala conducts two ethno-racially distinct pageants – one indigenous, the other ladina. The indigenous pageant prides itself on the authentic display of indigenous culture and physiognomies. Each year, Guatemala conducts two ethno-racially distinct pageants – one indigenous, the other ladina. The indigenous pageant prides itself on the authentic display of indigenous culture and physiognomies. On the contrary, during the westernized ladina pageant, contestants strive to adhere to western beauty ideals beauty and cultural norms engendered by discourses of whiteness. However, when the winner advances to the Miss World Pageant, they misappropriate elements of Mayan culture to express an authentic national identity in a way that is digestible to an international audience. In the study that follows, I examine the ways in which national and international pageants are reflective of their respective levels of social and political conflict and how they serve as mechanisms of manipulation by the elite at the national and global levels.

Show moreNational Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification is one way in which teachers can demonstrate excellence in teaching. This study was conducted in order to examine the effect of the professional development experiences on overall scores on the assessment of candidates for National Board Certification RTM in Florida. The study was conducted using the entire population of candidates in Florida (1,787) during the 2000--2001 assessment cycle. A survey was used to collect data from the candidates. Of the surveys sent, 62% were returned and used in the study. The survey included questions regarding the educational background, demographics, and professional development experiences of the teachers. To examine the effect of professional development experiences on the overall National Board Certification assessment scores, a multiple regression analysis was used. A predictive discriminant analysis was used to predict passing or non-passing group membership. The criterion variable used was the score on the National Board Certification assessment. Results indicated that professional development experiences coupled with background and demographics contributed significantly to a candidate's overall score. In the full model, controlling for all of the other variables in the model, holding an advanced degree in the field was found to contribute to the predictive accuracy of the model. Also, the number of hours preparing the portfolio and preparing for the assessment center also contributed to the predictive accuracy of the model. Bivariate correlations indicated that there was a positive correlation between candidates' overall scores and the number of hours of professional development. There was a positive correlation between the overall score and the amount of time preparing the portfolio entries and for the assessment center. The predictive accuracy of the full model for predicting passing and non-passing group membership was 58.7%. Tests of significance for the unique contribution of each subset of variables to the cross-validated classification accuracy of the full model were insignificant.

- Wolf perception and policy in the United States: an analysis of two red wolf reintroduction programs.

Throughout the course of North American history, wolves have been persecuted with a vengeance. Negative wolf perceptions have in the past created and continue to create controversial policies and views towards wolves. Negative wolf perceptions have in the past created and continue to create controversial policies and views towards wolves. While most of these attitudes are geared towards gray wolves, as gray wolves are the most common and prominent, unfavorable perceptions have also extended to the less well-known red wolf. This study compares two red wolf reintroduction programs, one in the Tennessee-Kentucky area and the other in North Carolina, as well as the Yellowstone Gray Wolf Reintroduction program. After analyzing these three programs, it can be concluded that the perceptions towards wolves regardless of the type of wolf or location remain largely negative and that wolves continue to face persecution.

- Abstract/Description

This thesis examines the history of the influential Ge rman colony in Guatemala and the deportation of the Germans to United States detention camps and nationalization of their properties during World War II. Material is included on the historical, economic, and political factors which made the presence of a powerful German colony in Guatemala intolerable to the United States and which led to the strong measures taken against the colony during the war.

Show moreThis study examines tribal, Islamic, and national identity in Saudi Arabia and the relationship between identity and socio-political institutions as agencies of the Saudi state. The Western understanding of identity differs from the understanding of identity in Saudi Arabia. An examination of the Other in Saudi society is a critical component toward understanding the concept of identity in Saudi Arabia. The ability of state structures to use socio-political institutions as integrating mechanisms that provide assistance to communities is commendable. Yet, when those same institutions assume a critical role in identity formation, reproduction, and/or oppression, then an examination of those institutions to ascertain whether or not they are representative of the communities or merely the state structure should be undertaken. This study examines the effects of the imposition of state structures of power on historical tribal and Islamic communities.

A group of working-class nationalists led by James Connolly attempted to fuse the class and national struggles, incorporating elements of nationalist cosmology, Marxist teleology, syndicalist trade-union practice, and the cultural militarization of Ireland's "physical-force" tradition. This thesis critically examines their hybrid theory and revolutionary praxis. With its analysis of the failure to realize an independent, socialist Ireland, it contributes to broader discussions of the relationship between nationalism and socialism, and the ability of these theories to address cultural heterogeneity.

It is not generally known that a pro-Nazi organization, the German-American Bund, held sway among certain segments of American society during the 1920s and 1930s. The organization achieved its greatest successes after the self-proclaimed "American Fuehrer," Fritz Julius Kuhn, took up the reigns of leadership in 1936. Show moreIt is not generally known that a pro-Nazi organization, the German-American Bund, held sway among certain segments of American society during the 1920s and 1930s. The organization achieved its greatest successes after the self-proclaimed "American Fuehrer," Fritz Julius Kuhn, took up the reigns of leadership in 1936. Under Kuhn's leadership, the Bund saw a dramatic increase in its membership rolls; it is estimated that over 25,000 dues-paying members belonged to this first-ever National Socialist organization created outside the environs of Nazi Germany. This thesis explores reasons why this blatantly pro-Nazi organization thrived in the bastion of democracy. While most historians attribute other reasons for the Bund's success, this thesis argues that it was the outstanding organizational skills of Kuhn that kept the movement alive in the years prior to World War II.
