A facility called the computerized management laboratory is hypothesized which will provide the problem-solver with a facility to access the entire information resource of the organization, to synthesize the problem. to use the system to explore alternatives. and to reach a solution which has a high probability of being correct. Based upon the involvement and economic commitment. the management laboratory is chartered to serve the information needs of management and to provide a facility for the practice of management during the decision-making process.

Show moreAligning information technology (lT) strategy with business strategy has been one of the top concerns of practitioners and scholars. Despite the documented positive effects of strategic alignment on organizational success, only few organizations consider themselves in alignment. Although numerous studies exist about IT-business alignment, the empirical studies based on strong theories have been rare in the alignment literature. This dissertation attempts to fulfill this gap by proposing and empirically validating a comprehensive strategic alignment model. Drawing on prior literature, we identified five antecedents of alignment; centralization, formalization , shared domain knowledge, successful IT history and relationship management. We further hypothesized that the effects of these antecedents are mediated by the drivers of alignment, which are conceptualized as the level of connection of lT and business planning and the level of communication between IT and business managers. Furthermore, the proposed research model investigated the moderating effects of goal commitment of business executives to achieving and sustaining strategic alignment and environmental uncertainty. The results showed that both drivers had significant effects on alignment, and the effect of connection is about twice that of communications. Our findings also support for the effects of all antecedents except centralization. Finally, we found partial support for the effects of moderating variables. Overall, the main contribution of this dissertation is the development and empirical validation of a comprehensive strategic alignment model with considerations for antecedents and potential moderating effects, thus extending the alignment literature by differentiating the effects of dimensions of environmental uncertainty as well as introducing the goal commitment and IT unit structure constructs, and providing prescriptive insight for managing IT-business strategic alignment.

Show moreRetaining business value in a legacy commercial enterprise resource planning system today often entails more than just maintaining the software to preserve existing functionality. This type of system tends to represent a significant capital investment that may not be easily scrapped, replaced, or re-engineered without considerable expense. A legacy system may need to be frequently extended to impart new behavior as stakeholder business goals and technical requirements evolve. Legacy ERP systems are growing in prevalence and are both expensive to maintain and risky to evolve. Humans are the driving factor behind the expense, from the engineering costs associated with evolving these types of systems to the labor costs required to operate the result. Autonomic computing is one approach that addresses these challenges by imparting self-adaptive behavior into the evolved system. The contribution of this dissertation aims to add to the body of knowledge in software engineering some insight and best practices for development approaches that are normally hidden from academia by the competitive nature of the retail industry. We present a formal architectural pattern that describes an asynchronous, low-complexity, and autonomic approach. We validate the pattern with two real-world commercial case studies and a reengineering simulation to demonstrate that the pattern is repeatable and agnostic with respect to the operating system, programming language, and communication protocols.

In turn, this should lead to advertisements that are more relevant for consumers and more effective for marketers. Therefore, personalized advertising has the potential to benefit both consumers and firms alike. However, consumer acceptance of the technique remains a huge hurdle, as many consumers seem uncomfortable with the practice due in part to privacy concerns over the vast amounts of data collected and analyzed when generating personalized advertisements. Therefore, it is critical to garner a better understanding of consumers’ attitudes towards personalized advertising in order to be able to use those insights to alleviate consumer privacy concerns. The purpose of this research is to work towards developing a more thorough understanding of consumers’ attitudes towards personalized advertising by exploring the antecedents and outcomes of those attitudes. In particular, we examine what factors determine whether personalized advertising is perceived favorably vs. invasively by consumers and what effects those perceptions have on consumers’ attitudes and intentions. The research lends contributions to academicians, marketing practitioners, and consumers by helping to achieve an increased understanding of personalized advertising’s impact on consumers’ perceptions. The empirical study employed in this research utilizes a conceptual framework that integrates privacy calculus theory with previous research on invasiveness, advertising acceptance, and innovation adoption. In addition, this research contributes to the marketing and information privacy literatures by making a theoretical connection between perceived invasiveness and its relationship with privacy concerns, as well as its impact on consumers’ attitudes and behavioral intentions. The results from the empirical research reveal that a number of constructs, such as perceived invasiveness, privacy concerns, perceived usefulness, and consumer innovativeness demonstrate significant relationships with consumers attitudes and behavioral intentions in the context of personalized advertising. Implications for managers, researchers, and consumers are discussed.

Show moreThis study investigates the relationship of executive fire officers' use of strategic thinking skills and their proficiency using information and communication technology. A non-experimental quantitative study design was employed. The study consisted of 400 graduates of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program. The use of strategic thinking skills was measured by the Strategic Thinking Questionnaire (STQv6) (Pisapia & Reyes-Guerra, 2007). The use of information and communication technology tools was measured by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Fluency Questionnaire (Hilberg, 2007). The EFOs' strategic thinking capabilities of systems thinking (3.58 +/- .447) and reflecting (3.82 +/- .445) compared to previously reported samples from the literature, both empirically and theoretically. Depending upon the sample, some means were significantly higher and others were significantly lower. The strategic thinking questionnaire and the ICT fluency questionnaire were not directly correlated to one another ; however, there were some strong correlations within their subscales. ICT fluency and ICT comfort were highly correlated (r = .516), as well as systems thinking and reflecting (r = .688) at the 0.05 level. There was a significant correlation between age and ICT comfort (r = -.235), as well as between years of experience and ICT comfort (r = -.203) at the 0.05 level. Age moderated the relationship between systems thinking*reflection, and ICT comfort. Race moderated the relationship between systems thinking*reflection, and ICT education/training. This research was significant because it was the first time that Executive Fire Officers have been studied regarding their strategic thinking capabilities and their information and communications technology fluency.

I empirically investigate the managements’ decision to voluntarily disclose strategic information. While carrying a benefit of reduced information asymmetry, strategic information disclosure carries a cost of investors disagreeing with managements’ strategy and thus refusing to provide funding to the firm. Using a hand- collected sample of information releases, I identify firm characteristics that affect the likelihood of strategic information disclosure.

Show moreIn this thesis, a framework for improving model-driven system design productivity with Requirements-Driven Design Automation (RDDA) is presented. The key to the proposed approach is to close the semantic gap between requirements, components and architecture by using compatible semantic models for describing product requirements and component capabilities, including constraints. An ontology-based representation language is designed that spans requirements for the application domain, the software design domain and the component domain. Design automation is supported for architecture development by machine-based mapping of desired product/subsystem features and capabilities to library components and by synthesis and maintenance of Systems Modeling Language (SysML) design structure diagrams. The RDDA framework uses standards-based semantic web technologies and can be integrated with exiting modeling tools. Requirements specification is a major component of the system development cycle. Mistakes and omissions in requirements documents lead to ambiguous or wrong interpretation by engineers, causing errors that trickle down in design and implementation with consequences on the overall development cost. We describe a methodology for requirements specification that aims to alleviate the above issues and that produces models for functional requirements that can be automatically validated for completeness and consistency. The RDDA framework uses an ontology-based language for semantic description of functional product requirements, SysML structure diagrams, component constraints, and Quality of Service. The front-end method for requirements specification is the SysML editor in Rhapsody. A requirements model in Web Ontology Language (OWL) is converted from SysML to Extensible Markup Language Metadata Interchange (XMI) representation., The specification is validated for completeness and consistency with a ruled-based system implemented in Prolog. With our methodology, omission s and several types of consistency errors present in the requirements specification are detected early on, before the design stage. Component selection and design automation have the potential to play a major role in reducing the system development time and cost caused by the rapid change in technology advances and the large solution search space. In our work, we start from a structured representation of requirements and components using SysML, and based on specific set of rules written in Prolog, we partially automate the process of architecture design.

In this thesis we evaluate the HPCC Systems framework with a special interest in multimedia data analysis and propose a framework for multimedia data processing. It is important to note that multimedia data encompasses a wide variety of data including but not limited to image data, video data, audio data and even textual data. While developing a unified framework for such wide variety of data, we have to consider computational complexity in dealing with the data. Preliminary results show that HPCC can potentially reduce the computational complexity significantly.

While the story revolves around a family, the narrative as a whole is meant to bring the reader into a microcosmic ecosystem. Essentially, I am examining an ecosystem. An ecosystem, not in the traditional sense, but an ecosystem nonetheless, because the narrative is a study of how varying species of heterotrophs interact with one another for both physical and emotional sustenance. Russell Water’s story is paramount, but the animals’ affect on one another is what lies below the peak and forms the mountain (an unintentional Hemingway reference). “It has often been observed that an object in a story does not derive its density of existence from the number and length of descriptions devoted to it, but from the complexity of its connections with the different characters” (Sartre 1210). Essentially, through complex and multiple connections between the human species and other species within Kingdom Animalia, I am attempting to develop an “ecosystem” that allows for narrative progression and the interconnection of relationships and thematic elements which range from the capitalistic class system to natural selection.

The spatial distribution of the CHVI and its component indices were examined and analyzed to meet the research goals, which were a) to develop indices of human vulnerability, physical exposure and composite hurricane vulnerability for all counties; b) to assess vulnerability distribution in terms of population size, metropolitan status (metropolitan versus non metropolitan counties) and location (coastal versus inland counties); c) to identify the specific underlying causes of vulnerability; d) to identify the significant clusters and outliers of high vulnerability; and e) to examine overlaps between high human vulnerability and high physical exposure in the region. Results indicated high overall vulnerability for counties that were metropolitan and / or coastal. Vulnerability clusters and intersections pointed towards high vulnerability in the major cities along the northeastern megalopolis, in the Hampton Roads section of Virginia and in parts of Delmarva Peninsula. Evidence of relationship of population size, metropolitan status and location with vulnerability levels provides a new perspective to vulnerability assessment.

Show moreProtecting Natural Resources, such as drinking water in terms of quality and quantity, is one of the missions of South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD). Water Supply Planning is one of the many projects at the Planning Department of the SFWMD, in which sixteen counties are analyzed to determine the most accurate population distribution for water supply distribution among the water utility companies. This thesis examines the current methodology which is used at the SFWMD, and addresses its shortcomings. It then introduces a proposed methodology, to improve population distribution analysis, by incorporating satellite imagery. Textural classification of satellite imagery will be used to extract residential neighborhoods from non-residential areas. The resultant residential areas, which is in the form of raster data, then will be converted to a vector coverage to be utilized as an additional source of data. Incorporating satellite imagery eliminates the assumption of homogenous population distribution, which the current methodology is based on and consequently, leads to a more accurate population distribution methodology.

In order to model such a system, we will need to combine various models-of-computation (MOC). MOC provide a framework to model various algorithms and activities, while accounting for and exploiting concurrency and synchronization aspects. Along with supporting various MOC, a modeling environment should also support a well developed library. In this thesis, we have explored various modeling environments. MLDesigner (MLD) is one such modeling environment that supports a well developed library and integrates various MOC. We present an overview and discuss the process of system modeling with MLD. We further present an abstract model of a Network-on-Chip in MLD and show latency results for various customizable parameters for this model.

Among various searching techniques, semantic-based searching has drawn significant attention recently. Gnutella-like efficient searching system (GES) [29] is such a system. GES derives node vector , a semantic summary of all documents on a node based on vector space model (VSM). The node-based topology adaptation algorithm and search protocol are then discussed. However, when there are many categories of documents at each node, the node vector representation may be inaccurate. We extend the idea of GES and present a class-based search system (CSS). It makes use of a document clustering algorithm: OSKM [27] to cluster all documents on a node into several classes. Each class can be viewed as a virtual node. As a result, class vector replaces node vector and plays an important role in class-based topology adaptation and search process, which makes CSS very efficient. Our simulation demonstrates that CSS outperforms GES.

This study aims to perform an analysis using a GIS database of Palm Beach County's Eastern urban areas to determine additional vegetation that currently exists on public lands and private preserves and to analyze and classify the vegetation for its potential conservation role, either as ; preserves, buffers, corridors or clusters connecting and enhancing existing natural areas.

Show moreMedia literacy is a competency needed for success in the 21st century yet a clear purpose does not exist that is useful in curriculum design. The purpose of this study was to investigate a combined (eclectic) approach to media literacy education according to selected international media literacy organizations. Determining an eclectic approach from subject area experts will be useful in designing and integrating media literacy curriculum. Methodologically, this study was a qualitative content analysis and is thematic in nature using a constant comparative method of analysis. Supporting frameworks were established through standards based curriculum development and Schwab’s (1969, 1971, 1973, 1983) ideas of practical deliberation. Purposive heterogeneous sampling was utilized in identifying media literacy organizations from countries considered leaders in media education. This included organizations from Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The primary approaches throughout all identified countries include an arts, critical, literacy, protectionist, and tool approach to media literacy. Through the process of curriculum deliberation, it is necessary to reconcile these approaches into one eclectic approach. Although individual subject areas may focus on one approach, it is important to consider all approaches equally during curriculum deliberation. In comparing an eclectic approach to Florida language arts standards (modeled after the Common Core State Standards), it was discovered that an eclectic approach to media literacy is not present. These standards focus almost exclusively on a literacy approach despite state statue requiring the full integration of media literacy. Language arts standards also remain focused on print media despite acknowledging that students should be prepared for success in the 21st century. This is a media saturated world and every subject should implement media literacy principles and approaches that prepare students to succeed in it.

In 2000, Congress authorized the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), a $10.5-billion mission to restore the South Florida ecosystem. Environmental projects in CERP require salinity monitoring in Florida Bay to provide measures of the effects of restoration on the Everglades ecosystem. However current salinity monitoring cannot cover large areas and is costly, time-consuming, and laborintensive. The purpose of this dissertation is to model salinity, detect salinity changes, and evaluate the impact of salinity in Florida Bay using remote sensing and geospatial information sciences (GIS) techniques. The specific objectives are to: 1) examine the capability of Landsat multispectral imagery for salinity modeling and monitoring; 2) detect salinity changes by building a series of salinity maps using archived Landsat images; and 3) assess the capability of spectroscopy techniques in characterizing plant stress / canopy water content (CWC) with varying salinity, sea level rise (SLR), and nutrient levels. Geographic weighted regression (GWR) models created using the first three imagery components with atmospheric and sun glint corrections proved to be more correlated (R^2 = 0.458) to salinity data versus ordinary least squares (OLS) regression models (R^2 = 0.158) and therefore GWR was the ideal regression model for continued Florida Bay salinity assessment. J. roemerianus was also examined to assess the coastal Everglades where salinity modeling is important to the water-land interface. Multivariate greenhouse studies determined the impact of nutrients to be inconsequential but increases in salinity and sea level rise both negatively affected J. roemerianus. Field spectroscopic data was then used to ascertain correlations between CWC and reflectance spectra using spectral indices and derivative analysis. It was determined that established spectral indices (max R^2 = 0.195) and continuum removal (max R^2= 0.331) were not significantly correlated to CWC but derivative analysis showed a higher correlation (R^2 = 0.515 using the first derivative at 948.5 nm). These models can be input into future imagery to predict the salinity of the South Florida water ecosystem.
