Show moreThe main objective of this thesis is to simulate, evaluate and discuss three standard methodologies of calculating Value-at-Risk (VaR) : Historical simulation, the Variance-covariance method and Monte Carlo simulations. Historical simulation is the most common nonparametric method. The Variance-covariance and Monte Carlo simulations are widely used parametric methods. This thesis defines the three aforementioned VaR methodologies, and uses each to calculate 1-day VaR for a hypothetical portfolio through MATLAB simulations. The evaluation of the results shows that historical simulation yields the most reliable 1-day VaR for the hypothetical portfolio under extreme market conditions. Finally, this paper concludes with a suggestion for further studies : a heavy-tail distribution should be used in order to imporve the accuracy of the results for the two parametric methods used in this study.

By directing many of the trucks travelling along the National Highways Systems to the Marine Highway corridors developed by the U.S. Maritime Administrations, many of the problems can be addressed in the Short and Medium terms. In order to do so, Short Sea Shipping, through the use of Ro/Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) Vessels, needs to be implemented. Although the environmental and congestion reducing benefits are considerable, the profitability of this transportation mode needs to be considered. A cost benefit analysis can determine the margin of profit, and attract investors and businesses. By developing a mathematical model that accounts the costs associated with transporting trucks along a particular corridor, the competitiveness of Short Sea Shipping can be determined.

Cold fronts are associated with increased wave energy and frequently occur during the winter months along many coasts, such as the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. The higher wave energy can be responsible for a large quantity of the sediment transport resulting in rapid morphologic change. Using streamer traps, the vertical distribution of onshore-directed sediment transport during two different cold fronts on two low-wave energy beaches (i.e., along the northern Yucatan and southeast Florida) were compared with the resulting morphologic change. The objectives of this study are to: 1) analyze the grain size distribution (statistics) of sediment transported during a cold front, 2) compare the vertical sediment distribution throughout the water column, and 3) compare characteristics of bed sediment to the sediment within the water column. Understanding the changing grain size distribution of bottom sediments in comparison to directional transport (throughout the water column) should help determine the sediment fraction(s) being eroded or deposited, which could greatly improve predictions of storm-induced morphology change.

Show moreEffective and efficient supply chain management is essential for domestic and global organizations to compete successfully in the international market. Superior inventory control policies and product distribution strategies along with advanced information technology enable an organization to collaborate distribution and allocation of inventory to gain a competitive advantage in the world market. Our research establishes the strategic resource allocation model to capture and encapsulate the complexity of the modern global supply chain management problem. A mathematical model was constructed to depict the stochastic, multiple-period, two-echelon inventory with the many-to-many demand-supplier network problem. The model simultaneously constitutes the uncertainties of inventory control and transportation parameters as well as the varying price factors. A genetic algorithm (GA) was applied to derive optimal solutions through a two-stage optimization process. Practical examples and solutions from three sourcing strategies (single sourcing, multiple sourcing, and dedicated system) were included to illustrate the GA based solution procedure. Our model can be utilized as a collaborative supply chain strategic planning tool to efficiently determine the appropriate inventory allocation and a dynamic decision making process to effectively manage the distribution plan.

Show moreThis academic exercise in organizational commitment research explores the causal relationships between organizational commitment, job satisfaction as its covariate latent exogenous variable and nine manifest endogenous variables: (a) organizational conflict, (b) personal values/role conflict, (c) cognitive/affective attitude, (d) intention to leave the organization, (e) job security, (f) role ambiguity, (g) job satisfaction, (h) organizational commitment and, (i) the deficiency in meeting basic Maslovian needs. This data sample of 400 (faculty members from four public community college districts in south-central Florida) represented urban and non-urban community colleges, large and small campuses, east- and west-coast community colleges, and both full- and part-time faculty. The covariance matrix based on complete data for the sample (n = 400), along with information of the estimated reliabilities, were analyzed using EzPATH, the SYSTAT implementation of structured equations modeling. GFI criteria accompanied diagnostic output and are provided. The path coefficients of the primary model and their respective standard errors complied with accepted statistical methods in most cases. Also, the root mean square residual of the primary model was .0180. The p-value for the primary model was 0.4506 which was supported by a chi-square (χ2) divided by DOF equating to 1.00513. The determined AGFI and GFI indices were .9755 and .9897 respectively. Only the psychological attitudes of conflict, either conflicting standards of the organization or personal values with the organization, and role ambiguity, showed any direct influence by satisfaction and non-significant influence by commitment. Only the psychological attitudes of cognitive/affective attitude, intention to leave the organization, and job security showed any direct influence by commitment and non-significant influence by satisfaction. In this study, job satisfaction and commitment show a mutual causal relationship with each other (represented by the high mutual causation coefficient of 0.94556 SE = 0.02163). The primary model was modified to address both the path of satisfaction being a precedent of commitment (SAT --> COM) and commitment being a precedent of satisfaction (COM --> SAT). Neither of these two models demonstrated goodness of fit criteria as strong as the primary model. This dissertation has shown that by using carefully collected data, it is possible to construct structural equation models consisting entirely of psychological-social variables in a model as large as nine manifest endogenous variables.

We develop new results which allow us to reduce a given impulse control problem to a sequence of iterated optimal stopping problems even though the original process is affected by interventions.

This thesis utilizes 33 years of oil futures, GARCH regressions, and the Jensen-Shannon informational criteria to provide extensive empirical objections to informational efficiency. The results demonstrate continuously inefficient oil future markets which exhibit decreased informational efficiency during recessionary periods, advocating the adaptive market hypothesis over the efficient market hypothesis.

Show moreThis dissertation presents methodologies to develop bridge condition deterioration models which accounts for non-stationarity in the deterioration process with applications to Florida concrete and timber bridges. A critical and comprehensive review of bridge deterioration modeling approaches is presented with illustrative examples based on regression, stochastic Markov-chain, mechanistic and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models. This study also develops a framework for relating the qualitative National Bridge Inventory (NBI) condition ratings with normalized resistance of the concrete bridge component with application to concrete bridge T-beams to reduce the subjectivity of the NBI condition rating. A systematic approach for the prioritization of bridges for inspection is developed using the multivariate regression modeling technique, and forecasting models are developed based on multiple relevant variables for both concrete bridge superstructure and substructure components. This dissertation also develops an approach for risk and reliability assessments of concrete and timber bridges based on non-parametric deterioration modeling techniques such as average time-in condition rating (ATICR) and Kaplan-Meier (K-M) survival (reliability) models, for probabilistic prediction of bridge safety while accounting for the partial information from the incomplete bridge condition observations. This study develops relative deterioration rates based on the ATICR and illustrates the time-dependent probability of deterioration of the concrete and timber bridge components based on K-M estimates. Further, the relationship of explanatory variables to the survival time is discussed and estimates are made for the median survival years for reinforced concrete solid slab decks. This dissertation presents the code developed in R for multivariate regression analysis and data-driven reliability analysis. Future research studies in bridge deterioration modeling are also presented.

Show moreIn essay I, I empirically examine theoretical inferences of real options models regarding the effects of business risk on the pricing of firms engaged in corporate control transactions. This study shows that the risk differential between the merging firms has a significant effect on the risk dynamic of bidding firms around control transactions and that the at-announcement risk dynamic is negatively related to that in the preannouncement period. In addition, the relative size of the target, the volatility of bidder cash flows, and the relative growth rate of the bidder have significant explanatory power in the cross-section of announcement returns to bidding firm shareholders as does the change in the cost of capital resulting from the transaction. Essay II provides an empirical analysis of a second set of real options models that theoretically examine the dynamics of financial risk around control transactions as well as the link between financial leverage and the probability of acquisition. In addition, I present a comparison of the financial risk dynamics of firms that choose an external growth strategy, through acquisition, and those that pursue an internal growth strategy through capital expenditures that are unrelated to acquisition.

Show moreManagement of water resources has become more complex in recent years as a result of changing attitudes towards sustainability and the attribution of greater attention to environmental issues, especially under a scenario of water scarcity risk introduced by climate changes and anthropogenic pressures. This thesis addresses the conflicts in optimizing multi-purpose hydropower operations under an environment where objectives are often conflicting and uncertain. Mathematical programming formulations can be used to achieve flexible, feasible and optimal operation and planning solutions to satisfy expectations of multiple stake-holders, including regulatory environmental compliance and sustainability. Innovative optimization models using MINLP with binary variables, fuzzy set theory, partial constraint satisfaction and multi-objective formulations incorporating unit commitment problem and adaptive real-time operations are developed and applied to a real life case study. These methodologies provide advances and valuable insights on optimal operations of hydropower systems under uncertain decision making environments.

On the first part of this study after the accurate development of the related simulation model, the optimization of a selected bus system characteristics focusing on the vehicle routing parameter will follow through the development and the application of a non-linear cost minimization problem. On the second part, the potential use of the regular-everyday bus routes in a no-notice emergency evacuation in order to save time comparing to the time needed so as to assign the actual evacuation routes to the evacuation bus vehicles will be analyzed.

He is manager of finance, instruction, and personnel. Under school based management his role is characterized by more responsibility for decisions and greater latitude in planning. School based management entails colleague-type decision- making, The principal is examined for this characteristic as he relates to faculty, parents, students, and district personnel. The results of this survey are recommended to the Department of Education and the Legislature f or consideration during the formative stage of the school based management program. The results of this survey indicate a need to reexamine plans for participation of parents in school decision-making . It is recommended that the Department of Education and the Legislature do this. Show moreDeep injection wells (DIW) in Florida are regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the state of Florida through the Underground Injection Control regulations contained within the Safe Drinking Water Act. Underground injection is defined as the injection of hazardous waste, nonhazardous waste, or municipal waste below the lowermost formation containing an underground source of drinking water within one-quarter mile of the wellbore. Municipalities in Florida have been using underground injection as an alternative to surface disposal of treated domestic wastewater for nearly 40 years. The research involved collecting data as of September, 2007 on all the Class I DIWs in the state of Florida and evaluating the differences between them. The analysis found regional differences in deep well practice and canonical correlation analyses concluded that depth below the USDW is the most significant factor to prevent upward migration of the injected fluid.

Show moreProfessional service entrepreneurs (PSEs) paradoxically practice their profession in highly institutionalized contexts which require significant socialization, while at the same time enacting their role as an entrepreneur. Some activities consistent with entrepreneurship may be unnecessary for—and possibly even contradictory with— activities consistent with professional roles. In this dissertation, I addressed the questions of how two highly central role identities (professional and entrepreneurial) related to entrepreneurial orientation (EO) in professional service practices, and how EO influences performance in the context of professional practices. Using a sample of 139 physicians, I examined the relationships between the role identity centrality of two primary roles (professional and entrepreneurial) that PSEs occupy, the EO of their firms, and firm performance. This study utilized a mixed methods design, consisting of both a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews administered to a sample of professionals who own professional practice firms in the southeastern region of Florida. Findings suggest a significant and positive relationship between entrepreneurial role identity centrality and entrepreneurial orientation and a marginally significant and negative moderation of entrepreneurial role identity centrality upon the relationship between professional role identity centrality and EO. A qualitative study served to elaborate on the findings of the quantitative study, and revealed the potential of very unique understandings of the intersection of entrepreneurship and professional practice across a selection of physicians.

Show moreAs ecosystems degrade globally, ecosystem services that support life are increasingly threatened. Indications of degradation are occurring in the Northern Indian River Lagoon (IRL) estuary in east central Florida. Factors associated with ecosystem degradation are complex, including climate and land use change. Ecosystem research needs identified by the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) include the need to: consider the social with the physical; account for dynamism and change; account for complexity; address issues of scale; and focus on ecosystem structure and process. Ecosystems are complex, self-organizing, multi-equilibrial, non-linear, middle-number systems that exist in multiple stable states. Results found are relative to the observation and the frame of analysis, requiring multi-scaled analytical techniques. This study addresses the identified ecosystem research needs and the complexity of the associated factors given these additional constraints. Relativity is addressed through univariate analysis of dissolved oxygen as a measure of the general health of the Northern IRL. Multiple spatial levels are employed to associate social process scales with physical process scales as basin, sub-basins, and watersheds. Scan statistics return extreme value clusters in space-time. Wavelet transforms decompose time-scales of cyclical data using varying window sizes to locate change in process scales in space over time. Wavelet transform comparative methods cluster temporal process scales across space. Combined these methods describe the space-time structure of process scales in a complex ecosystem relative to the variable examined, where the highly localized results allow for connection to unexamined variables.

In this new era, engineers are rethinking a network designed predominately for the automobile. The ultimate goal of this research is to create a process that can make a vehicle dominant corridor a desirable, livable thoroughfare by livability design and context sensitive performance measures. Balancing travel modes requires an account of vehicular traffic and the impact of reconfiguring existing conditions. The analysis herein is conducted by field data collection, transportation equations and microsimulation. Simulating traffic behavior will be the means to apply livable alternatives comparable to existing Southeast Florida conditions. The results herein have shown that micro-simulation can be utilized in transportation planning to reveal good livability alternatives.

Show morePixel based and object based vegetation community classification methods were performed using 30 meter spatial resolution Landsat satellite imagery of the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge), a remnant of the northern Everglades. Supervised classification procedures using maximum likelihood and parallelepiped algorithms were used to produce thematic maps with the following vegetation communities : wet prairie, sawgrass, cattail, tree island, brush, aquatic/open water. Spectral data, as well as NDVI, texture and principal component data were used to produce vegetation community classification maps. The accuracy levels of the thematic maps produced were calculated and compared to one another. The pixel based approach using the parallelepiped classification algorithm on the spectral and NDVI dataset had the highest accuracy level. A generalized form of this classification using only three vegetation communities (all wet prairie, tree island/brush and aquatic/open water) was compared to a previously published classification which used 1987 SPOT imagery in order to extract information on possible vegetation community transitions that are occurring within the Refuge. Results of the study indicate that 30 meter spatial resolution may be useful for understanding broad vegetation community trends but not species level trends. Pixel based procedures provide a more accurate classification than object based procedures for this landscape when using 30 meter imagery. Lastly, since 1987 there may be a trend of tree island/brush communities replacing wet prairie communities in the northern part of the Refuge and a transition to wet prairie communities in place of tree island/brush communities in the southern portion of the Refuge.
