The service disciplines studied are exhaustive, gated and limited service. These service disciplines play an important role in the network performance, especially when some users are relatively less active than others in contributing traffic load to the network. Network performance for these service disciplines are compared to determine which one of them gives better performance. Simulation is used for this study and results are presented in terms of average delay, queue lengths and delay histograms versus traffic intensity.

Show moreA unified performance analysis of token-passing local area networks is reported in this thesis. The primary performance criterion is the mean transfer delay of a message, which is defined as the time from the instant a message becomes available for transmission at a station until the end of its successful reception at the destination. Other performance criteria are power and effective transmission ratio. Analytical expressions for the criteria are derived for exhaustive, gated, and limited service disciplines. Simulation models are also used to support the investigations. The effects of service time distribution (constant, exponential, and hyperexponential) are examined. It is found that under any traffic intensity, service discipline or packet length distribution, token bus gives higher delay and has lower power and lower effective transmission ratio than token ring. Also, the token bus is found to be less sensitive to message length distribution, performing about the same for constant, exponential, and hyperexponential distribution.

Show moreThis thesis deals with simulation of a conflict-free token-passing protocol for local area bus networks. The primary emphasis of this simulation study is to observe the effects of token holding time on the performance of the network. Token holding time is adjusted to account for three types of service disciplines: purely non-exhaustive, non-exhaustive and exhaustive. Network performance for these three service disciplines is compared to determine, which one of the three gives a relatively better performance. Besides throughput and delay, a more compact form of performance measure called "power", has also been used in this study. Power is simply a ratio of throughput and delay. This study has shown that the token holding time has significant effect on the performance of a local area network. Simulation results of this study, are presented in terms of throughput, delay, power, logical ring size, token circulation time, efficiency/overhead versus offered load and token holding time. Some results are also presented in terms of histograms.

The scheme has the advantage of superior channel utilization, bounded delay, fair access to all stations, dynamic bandwidth allocation to network users, and implementation simplicity. Extensive simulations have been carried out to verify the characteristics of the network. Simulation results reinforce the initial claims of the advantages offered by Dual Bus R-Net. Performance analysis is presented in terms of network delay and channel utilization. Simulation results are compared with similar results of X-Net, R-Net, DQDB, and Expressnet.

Show moreThis project consisted of a feasibility study to ascertain whether or not an inexpensive acoustic modem for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) could be developed using low cost commercially available products. Our AUV's at Florida Atlantic University currently use LonWorks for their internal control networks, so we have plenty of experience with their parts. The LonWorks Power Line Transceivers are capable of generating a signal that can be sent to a transducer for communication through the water. The PLT-30 Power Line Transceiver generates a direct sequence spread spectrum signal (DSSS) that offers many useful operating features; such as anti-jam, interference rejection and covert communications, low intercept probability, and most importantly, multipath protection. After numerous tests, however, the system was incapable of establishing reliable acoustic communications. We conclude that the PLT-30 Power Line Transceiver use as an underwater acoustic modem is not a viable approach. As an alternative method, communication through an electric current field was tested in a salt-water pool. The initial test produced a 100% success rate.

An addressing scheme and an automatic routing algorithm are developed that makes it possible to add new users without affecting the addresses of existing nodes. The capacity of the proposed networking architecture is determined and compares favorably to that of hypercube interconnected LANs when the number of rings in the network is small.

Show moreThe primary emphasis of this thesis is to study the behavioral characteristics of Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) and Distributed Queue Dual Bus (DQDB) High Speed Local Area Networks (HSLANs). An FDDI architecture with passive interfaces is proposed to provide a reliable and efficient network topology. This network architecture outperforms the existing FDDI architecture with active interfaces in terms of small asynchronous packet delays and high asynchronous packet throughput. The design and implementation issues involved in the design of the hierarchical (multi-level) DQDB and FDDI networks are also presented. The hierarchical network architecture provides modularity and scalability with respect to speed and the number of users. Simulation models are developed for each of these network architectures to study their performance. Simulation results are presented in terms of medium access delay, throughput, and packet delays.

This thesis explores the areas of high speed networking for multimedia applications. Focusing primarily on the FDDI technology we model a high speed FDDI multimedia LAN model and developed typical multimedia traffic models to aid in case study of the FDDI HSMM-LAN networks. FFOL, the Follow On Standards currently in the ANSI standards committee, discuss Network Architectures that include a gigabit backbone network for FDDI and FDDI II networks, making them an attractive and cost effective option to the customer.

Pertinent wireless network performance measures such as call completion/dropping probabilities and the average number of handovers usually require the probability distributions of the cell dwell time and call holding time; and are therefore not easy to evaluate. The proposed performance evaluation technique requires the moments of the cell dwell time and is given in terms of the Laplace transform function of the call holding time. Multimedia services that have Weibull and generalized gamma distributed call holding times are investigated. The proposed approximation method uses the compound geometric random sum distribution and requires that the geometric parameter be very small. For applications in which this parameter is not sufficiently small, a result is derived that improves the accuracy (to order of the geometric parameter) of the performance measures evaluated.

Show moreWith the ever increasing demand for bandwidth intensive applications like video-ondemand, interactive television services, high-defmition television (HDTV) and internet telephony, the first mile network, referred to as the last mile network in the earlier stages of its development, has proven to solve the "bottleneck" often experienced between users and the central office. The Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON), developed by the IEEE 802.3ah Task Force for Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM), resolves this bottleneck by providing the user with a fiber optic link to the central office that has many advantages, such as nearly infinite bandwidth, low cost, easy installation and immunity to electromagnetic interference, and a saving of the need for powered components in the signal path from the user to the switch. EPON s have proven to deliver the essential services of voice, video, and data communications reliably, while at the same time providing expected guarantees of the delivery of those services in terms of defined Quality of Service measures (QOS). A continuous theme throughout EPON research has been the study of efficient Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) as a key factor in achieving fairness in distributing bandwidth amongst remote network units. This research investigates another factor and its effect on network performance and service delivery: Cycle Demand Proportionality (CDP). By observing the patterns of demand in the network on an individual network unit basis cycle after cycle, deductions regarding load characteristics of some units over others can be made. Decisions can be make about subsequent grant allocations based on this factor and aim to achieve better results in the process. Simulations of EPONs Lmder varying loads incorporating the usc of CDP in conjunction with currently used DBA schemes are made and results are analyzed. A major contribution of this research is a new bandwidth allocation algorithm that gives improved performance in terms of packet delay versus offered load. Performance metrics are compared against two common bandwidth allocation algorithms: Interleaved Polling with Adaptive Cycle Time (IPACT) and Cyclic Polling (CP). Additional results also include improvements in packet loss and throughput. The data that represents traffic for this network has two properties, self-similarity and long range dependency. Plotting the auto-covariance, auto-correlation, and variance for this traffic, for various aggregation levels demonstrates these properties.

The work includes designing a simulation for generation of network traffic in a simulated network and studying the behavior of the network with different parameters. The experiment helped us in determining the optimum values of these parameters. For the selected set of experiments and further implies that simulation can determine the nodes different parameter in a control network and will result in a Dependable system.

It keeps many good features of current I/O architectures, while providing more flexibility to take advantage of new hardware technologies, promote architectural openness, provide better performance and higher reliability. The proposed architecture introduces a new definition of I/O subsystems and makes use of concurrent object-oriented technology. It combines the notions of object and thread into something called an active object. All concurrency abstractions required by the proposed architecture are provided through external libraries on top of existing sequential object-oriented languages, without any changes to the syntax and semantics of these languages. We also evaluate the performance of optimal implementations of the proposed I/O architecture against other I/O architectures in three popular, PC-based, distributed environments: network file server, video server, and video conferencing. Using the RESearch Queueing Modeling Environment (RESQME), we have developed detailed simulation models for various implementations of the proposed I/O architecture and two other existing I/O architectures: a conventional, interrupt-based I/O architecture and a peer-to-peer I/O architecture. Our simulation results indicate that, on several different hardware platforms, the proposed I/O architecture outperforms both existing architectures in all three distributed environments considered.
