The thesis investigates the paradoxical similarity of the foreign policy views of right-wing "isolationists" in the late 1940's and the early 1950's and those of comtemporary left-wing critics. Senator Robert Taft of Ohio, Representative Howard Buffet of Nebraska, and the publicists Frank Chodorov, Garet Garrett, Louis Bromfield, and Felix Morley believed that imperial American policy would continually risk war, and that centralization, militarism, staggering taxation, inflation and a...

Senator Robert Taft of Ohio, Representative Howard Buffet of Nebraska, and the publicists Frank Chodorov, Garet Garrett, Louis Bromfield, and Felix Morley believed that imperial American policy would continually risk war, and that centralization, militarism, staggering taxation, inflation and a garrison state would inevitably result from taking the path of empire. As classical liberals, they saw the imperial impetus to stat ism as the major threat to libertarian values and, hence, opposed vigorous foreign policy. The Korean War was a watershed: most Rightists, even Taft, became Asian interventionists. The publicists, not needing to win voters committed to Cold War, held the old views longer. The rise of National Review contributed to the demise of right-wing anti-intervencionism. Contemporary libertarianism revives the old viewpoint.

This research analyzes how American soldiers reacted to the Dachau concentration camp, and offers statistics that counter the arguments made by Holocaust deniers and revisionists. It compares how the Soviets, British, and Americans conducted themselves as they freed other prisoners, and discusses why every camp liberation was dissimilar. Evidence gathered from the liberators who executed the SS disproves the argument that they were premediated killers and emphasizes how unique Dachau’s...

It compares how the Soviets, British, and Americans conducted themselves as they freed other prisoners, and discusses why every camp liberation was dissimilar. Evidence gathered from the liberators who executed the SS disproves the argument that they were premediated killers and emphasizes how unique Dachau’s conditions were on the day of liberation, when compared to other concentration camps. It also directly refutes many arguments made by Holocaust deniers, and addresses their erroneous narratives, statistics, and conclusions regarding the Dachau liberation, and the Holocaust in general.

Show moreThis thesis will investigate the ways in which Hillary Rodham Clinton, former First Lady of the United States and the Junior United States Senator from New York State, appropriated strategies of liberal feminism in her political career as the first modern, working mother to serve as First Lady. A feminist First Lady, Clinton broke through the social expectations placed upon that role in an unprecedented manner by taking an active part in the political strategy and substance of her husband's administration. Her successful campaign for the United States Senate in 2000 as the first former First Lady to hold such an office proved that she has her own political clout independent of her husband. Hillary Rodham Clinton has all the marks of a liberal feminist success story: a strong political background and educational credentials, unfettered ambition, mastery of public discourse, her own political identity, and a real commitment to tough policymaking and representation in Washington. Yet despite this success, liberal feminism presents problems for the women's movement generally. After mapping the history of Hillary Rodham Clinton as a feminist political figure, I will examine whether liberal feminism is adequate in challenging patriarchal structures and other related forms of domination.

The surge in granting equal rights to gays and lesbians in the United States is remarkable. Yet with this surge comes a conflict : the civil rights of gays and lesbians against the rights of religious individuals, predominantly Christians, refusing to tolerate a behavior they think immoral. My thesis focuses on two hypothetical situations : a county clerk refusing to issue a marriage license to an engaged lesbian couple and an inn owner refusing a night's stay to a gay couple. Show moreThe surge in granting equal rights to gays and lesbians in the United States is remarkable. In both cases, the clerk and inn owner refuse service for religious reasons. Normatively, I argue that we must move beyond a framework of toleration to a system of equal respect and understanding of our fellow human beings. Legally, I argue that the rights of religious expression and exercise should not trump the civil rights of gays and lesbians in the public sphere.
