- EFFECT OF COMPUTER GRAPHICS ON IMPROVING ESTIMATES TO AVERAGE SPEED PROBLEMS (INSTRUCTIONS).

The present study evaluated the effectiveness of three instructional methods for improving students' estimates of average speed. The student's task was to estimate the average speed of a round trip when given the initial and return speeds. The discovery procedure simulated the round trip by showing one point that moved at the two simulated speeds and a second reference point that simulated the student's estimate. The graph method showed how increasing the initial speed influenced the average...
Show moreThe present study evaluated the effectiveness of three instructional methods for improving students' estimates of average speed. The student's task was to estimate the average speed of a round trip when given the initial and return speeds. The discovery procedure simulated the round trip by showing one point that moved at the two simulated speeds and a second reference point that simulated the student's estimate. The graph method showed how increasing the initial speed influenced the average speed when the return speed was held constant. The computation procedure presented the students with some problems in which they were shown how to compute the average speed by dividing total distance by total time. The results revealed that the discovery method was fairly successful but the graph method was less successful than anticipated and the computation method was a failure. The effectiveness of the discovery method was attributed to the concreteness of the examples and the interactive feedback provided by the reference point.

- The Discovery Approach: How and Where in Elementary Music?.
- Creator
- Benson, Mattie Alexander, Robinson, Kenneth H., Florida Atlantic University
- Abstract/Description

The objective of this study has been to examine the discovery approach to learning and its adaptability to music education. Professional literature relating to the discovery approach was reviewed and summarized. Conclusions and implications for music education were drawn from these summaries. An examination of the philosophical implications of educational trends and the nature of learning was also made. This examination was made to gather perspective on the need for evaluating and exploring...
Show moreThe objective of this study has been to examine the discovery approach to learning and its adaptability to music education. Professional literature relating to the discovery approach was reviewed and summarized. Conclusions and implications for music education were drawn from these summaries. An examination of the philosophical implications of educational trends and the nature of learning was also made. This examination was made to gather perspective on the need for evaluating and exploring educational approaches and methods that affect learning. It was concluded that no one method or approach can be accepted as the all encompassing answer in music education. However, the discovery approach does hold great promise as another way of teaching music to the child in a creative manner. Through the discovery approach the child can be given the opportunity to experience personal success and expertise in the art of music. He can enjoy exploring and discovering the elements of music as learning evolves from his personal perspective and point of view.

- Transformational experiences of African American women: their critical reflections as former migrants who evolved from harvest of shame to seeds of hope.

Narrative inquiry was the qualitative method utilized to collect stories related to former migrant African American females who transformed their lives from migrant workers and found alternative career paths. Sustained poverty among migratory workers created a disenfranchised culture of uneducated citizens. A large part of this labor force was women. Show moreNarrative inquiry was the qualitative method utilized to collect stories related to former migrant African American females who transformed their lives from migrant workers and found alternative career paths. Sustained poverty among migratory workers created a disenfranchised culture of uneducated citizens. A large part of this labor force was women. It was expected that this culture of poverty would perpetuate itself through generations. The universal stereotypes associated with impoverished migrants were so ingrained that overwhelmingly the majority of migrants accepted a life of poverty as prophesy. However, some former migrant African American women defied odds and rose above the cumulative effects of poverty. The major findings of this study revealed factors that significantly contributed to their success in a variety of professional careers: consistent family support, adaptive coping skills, catalyst for change, transformative learning, and meaningful relationships with non-family members, and commitment to community service. Sub-findings emerged that revealed that these additional factors also contributed to their success: value placed on education, strong belief in God, and leadership skills.
