Show morePurpose. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence, sources, and symptoms of teacher stress among public school teachers in Florida. Procedure. Stress was defined as a response syndrome of negative affects resulting from aspects of the teacher's job and mediated by the perception that the demands constitute a threat to self-esteem and by coping mechanisms activated to reduce the perceived threat. The instrument used in collecting the data for this study was a mail questionnaire, with a scale ranging from zero to four, for assessing the intensity of each item. The questionnaire consisted of biographical and school environmental characteristics, fifty possible sources of teacher stress, a general stress question, and sixteen possible symptoms of teacher stress. As a pilot study, the questionnaire was administered to a group of public school teachers in Palm Beach County for the purpose of examining each item for clarity. Items found to be ambiguous were revised or deleted. The 325 sample population was randomly selected from the Florida Teaching Profession/National Education Association membership. The mail questionnaire had a 78 percent response for a total of 248 respondents. The data were transformed to computer cards and submitted for statistical analysis through the Florida Atlantic University Computer Center, Boca Raton, Florida. Means, rank-order, T-tests, analysis of variance, and factor analysis were applied to the data for the purpose of determining the level of significance in deciding to reject or accept the research hypotheses at the .05 level. Conclusions and Recommendations. It is concluded from the results of the analysis that teacher stress is prevalent in Florida. Forty-one percent of the respondents reported being a teacher was either very stressful or extremely stressful. Self-reported teacher stress appeared to be similarly distributed for the biographical and school environmental characteristics. Pupil misbehavior accounted for the largest percentage of sources of stress with high means. The priority source of stress as perceived by the teachers was inadequate teaching salaries. Teachers, regardless of biographical or environmental characteristics, appear to share common perceptions concerning the sources and symptoms of teacher stress. Recommendations for reducing and/or dealing with stress are presented with suggestions ranging from inservice programs, a teacher social support system to administrative consistency and teacher bargaining unit concerns.

Van Manen's approach guided this study with Munhall's adaptation of existential investigation. Seven nurses participated. All were selected on a voluntary basis provided they were working in critical-care, had two years of critical-care experience, and were willing to talk about the topic of commitment. Several themes emerged as essential to humanistic experience of commitment to nursing. Contextual descriptions of commitment also emerged. The nurses' primary commitment was to the patient and the ethical dilemmas that surfaced when they tried to honor that commitment proved the major source of frustration and dissatisfaction. Commitment was found to be the connection or bridge to caring. Without commitment there was no caring. Implications for nursing administration and education were addressed. Additional questions were raised for future research.

The findings indicated that wardens generally experience high levels of job satisfaction, reflect positive occupational sentiments, and report low levels of work-related stress. Additionally, results from the Chi-square tests and Lambda measures of association indicated that little to no relationship existed between gender and any of the explored variables.

Show morePersonal wellness and burnout have been common themes in research studies regarding professional satisfaction and career success. Personality characteristics in relation to job and career success among professionals have also been included in countless studies. However, Bateman and Crant (1993) defined and began research on the specific construct of the proactive personality and how it related to personal achievement, satisfaction, and success among executives. This dissertation study is an extension of their research in that the relationship between proactive personality, job satisfaction and levels of burnout among Licensed Mental Health Counselors in Florida specifically, is being examined. While proactive personality positively and significantly related to job satisfaction and satisfaction with being a counselor among the participants in this study, it did not significantly relate to feelings of emotional exhaustion or feelings of depersonalization toward clients. When age, salary, years licensed, and proactive personality in relation to job satisfaction and levels of burnout were included in the statistical analysis, proactive personality and salary positively related to job satisfaction, personal accomplishment, and satisfaction with being a counselor, but the relationships were not significant. Hence, the results of this study provides useful information regarding proactive personality and how it relates to the overall job satisfaction, levels of burnout among clinicians, and to assist in the development of wellness programs, burnout prevention, and in the empowerment of mental health professionals in this demanding field.

The sample used in this study was delimited to include only full-time teachers in Broward County Schools. Six research questions provided the foundation of the study, which was operationalized by Astin's (1993) input environment outcome model (IEO). A descriptive analysis described the sample's individual and institutional characteristics and demographics. Correlational analyses were conducted to determine the strength of the relationship between variables. Finally, the data were analyzed using hierarchical, multiple regression. The regression model explored factors predicting job satisfaction and job stress among teachers. This study reported statistically significant results for each regression model. Statistically significant at p < .001, the factors that explained 55% of the variance in the final job satisfaction model included: How do background characteristics (e.g., sex, ethnic origin, and age), behavioral factors (e.g., openness, intrinsic motivation), and institutional variables (autonomy, student behavior, leadership, and school climate and culture) predict teacher job stress in Broward County? Implications for policy, practice and future research regarding job satisfaction and stress are included.

American teachers work tirelessly to provide quality instruction in a safe learning environment that nurtures the educational and emotional needs of their students (Jennings & Greenberg, 2009). Many teachers report that the emotional toll of teaching has impacted their professional and personal lives in a negative way (Werner Juarez et al., 2020) As a result, teachers are vulnerable to the development of occupational hazards such as stress, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress (STS) which may diminish their professional quality of life (Richards, 2012). The literature indicates that the deterioration of professional quality of life is strongly correlated to more systemic problems in education, such as elevated attrition rates and the retention of highly qualified teachers (Schutz & Zembylas, 2009). The research suggests that indicators for these professional deficits may begin to present during the preparation phase of teaching (Miller & Flint-Stipp, 2019). However, most universities provide inadequate training for the protection and improvement of teacher well-being across the span of their careers (Schonert-Reichl, 2017). In addition, there has been little research invested in the development of compassion satisfaction, a protective factor in cultivating teacher resilience (Pérez-Chacón et al., 2021). The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between social and emotional competence (SEC) and professional quality of life factors in pre-service teachers. A nonexperimental, correlational design was used to examined whether emotion regulation and relationship management skills is predictive of an educators’ perceived levels of burnout, STS, and compassion satisfaction (N = 51).

Retention of nurses is a priority in health care, so a better understanding of factors that contribute to job satisfaction and intent to leave is needed. One possible factor is the quality of the interpersonal relationships that occur among managers, peers, and nurses. A negative quality would be acts of hostility or horizontal violence, which is nurse-to-nurse aggression. This is theorized to be a result of oppressed group behavior. These behaviors may influence job satisfaction and the intent to stay on the job and in the profession. The overall purpose of the study was to explore relationships between horizontal violence, oppressed group behavior, job satisfaction and intent to leave a position or nursing in the next 12 months. This pilot study examined factors that influence registered nurses ' job satisfaction and intent to leave a position or nursing. Convenience sampling was used to obtain the sample of registered nurses from a BSN completion program and a Novice Nurse Initiative Program (n=99). Written stories of conflict between nurses were obtained and analyzed with linguistic analysis and word count (LIWC) software and various standardized instruments were used including the Nurses Workplace Behavior Scale (NWBS), the Organizational Climate for Caring Scale (OCCS), the Peer Group Caring Interaction Scale (PGCIS), The McCloskey/Mueller Satisfaction Scale (MMSS) and two visual analogue scales (VAS). Significant relationships were found between job satisfaction and intent to stay in a position and nursing (p<.01), oppressed group behavior and intent to stay in nursing (p<.01), oppressed group behavior and job satisfaction (p<.01). Manager and peer caring behaviors were related to intent to stay in a position and nursing (p<.01). Using stepwise multiple regression, both manager and peer caring behaviors were found to influence the relationship between job satisfaction and intent to stay in a position or nursing. The findings of this study suggest that the quality of interpersonal relationships between managers, peers and nurses can influence job satisfaction and intent to stay in a position or nursing.

Show moreThis study examined the effectiveness of citizen participation strategies occurring most frequently in the administration of educational programs. Determining the most frequently occurring citizen participation strategies required an exhaustive search of case studies noting the frequency of occurrence of the various strategies. A second search of the case studies yielded twenty critical criteria or issues which were frequently mentioned in the selection of a particular citizen participation strategy. Strategies found to occur most frequently were the public hearing, advisory committees, organizations and workshops. A panel of experts was randomly selected from a list of educational leaders with experience in citizen participation. A questionnaire was drafted, field tested and then mailed to each expert. It was found that educational leaders rank the advisory committee strategy as the most effective strategy followed by the workshop, organizations and public hearings. Another conclusion reached was that when specific criteria are suggested, the preferred strategy is subject to change based on the criteria and circunstance of the situation. The study further revealed that when a specific criteria or issue is weighted most heavily, the educational leaders identify different strategies as being most effective for the various circumstances. Differences in the frequencies of first choice responses within the demographic categories were also interpreted to be significant by the chi-square test.

Show moreThe purpose of this research was to explore the relationship between wellness and burnout among novice counselors. This research was carried out in order to gain a better understanding of the experience of the novice counselor as well as to gain insight into the effects of wellness and burnout on these experiences. The significance of this research lies in the need to understand the novice counselor's journey, the factors that can contribute to or prevent burnout, and the potential prevention and intervention strategies that can be employed in response to burnout. The data of a final sample of 144 participants' scores on the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), The Five Factor Wellness Evaluation of Lifestyle (5F-Wel), and a demographic questionnaire were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences in order to explore the relationships between wellness and burnout. The researcher found significant relationships between demographic factors of the novice counselor, including age, years of experience, and number of hours delivering counseling services, and both the MBI and the 5F-Wel. The researcher also found a relationship between all factors of wellness and the three subscales of burnout. A particularly important finding was the significance of the Coping Self, Physical Self, and Creative Self subscales of wellness to the subscales of burnout. The implications of the findings include the development of specific intervention and prevention strategies for novice counselors. Limitations of this research include the relatively small sample size, potential bias among the participants who chose to complete the survey, and the limited generalizability.

This study found a surprisingly low PTSD symptom level among the nursing students though they reported several distressing traumas. Also surprising, participants reported more distress from traumas relating to verbal abuse than to traumas relating to death and/or severe injury. Proactive coping, optimism, and self-esteem were negatively related to PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Further research will be needed to support these findings.

Show moreThis study investigates the relationship between mobbing, burnout, and religious coping styles among Protestant clergy. Mobbing is an emotionally abusive workplace behavior and is defined as the prolonged malacious harassment of a coworker by a group of other members of an organization to secure the removal from the organization of the one who is targeted. Mobbing has only recently become a focus of attention in the US. To date, there are no known studies investigating mobbing in the workplace setting of the church. The broad purpose of this study is to determine if Protestant pastors experience mobbing, how they are affected by it, and how they cope with it. Four religious coping styles - Self-directing, Collaborative, Deferring, and Surrender to God - are investigated to determine how coping styles of religious individuals function in mediating the effect of mobbing or burnout. Burnout is assessed throught he Maslach Burnout Inventory and measures emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. This study utilizes Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and presents two models of mediational analysis.... The results of analysis indicate that Protestant clergy do experience being mobbed which results in emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. Clergy with a self-directing coping style experience more burnout than do those who utilize a surrender to God style. Differences in indirect effects between models were noted. As the school accountability deadline to meet the 2014 federal objective of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 rapidly draws closer for the majority of states, this federal legislation has created increasingly high stress levels, potentially the highest ever, for principals across the country. ... The proposed study is significant to the field of education because this study provides the most current research regarding the mental and physical effects of work-related stress on elementary school principals in an era of increased accountability and the impact stress has on the school climate. Further, this study offers school principals a repertoire of effective coping mechanisms that can be utilized to help reduce their perceived stress levels. Over the time of the study, it was repeatedly reported by the principal participants that their work stress had increased, which was found to have impacted their health as well as the school climate.
