The study examines the relationship between imports and foreign exchange reserves for total imports, consumer goods imports, intermediate goods imports, and capital goods imports. It is found that foreign exchange reserves constitute an important determinant of the demand for each of these import categories, but the greatest dependence occurs for imports of consumer goods. This pattern of dependency reflects the Iranian government's priorities in allocating foreign exchange among competing categories of imports. The dependence of various import categories on the stock of foreign exchange reserves reflects a reallocation -of an ample stock of foreign exchange in a manner which a free, an unrestricted, market would not dictate, so that the composition of imports is thereby changed.

- THE FOREIGN EXCHANGE CONSTRAINT ON THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF IRAN (1965-74).
- Creator
- ERFANI-EZATI, GOSHTASB., Florida Atlantic University, Stronge, William B., College of Business, Department of Economics
- Abstract/Description
-
This thesis focuses on the foreign exchange constraint on the economic development. An analysis of the foreign exchange constraint on the economic development of Iran was made for the 1965-73 period. An econometric model was constructed and estimated. It was found that the prediction of the two-gap model was confirmed for Iran during the 1960's, i.e. the supply of foreign exchange was the major constraint on Iran's growth during the sample period.

Hijab, the Islamic dress code, in Muslim communities is a sensitive and controversial issue. It embodies religious doctrine and patriarchal policies. Show moreHijab, the Islamic dress code, in Muslim communities is a sensitive and controversial issue. It embodies religious doctrine and patriarchal policies. However, in Iran this concept entails a more exclusive significance due to the strict nature of the Shiite faith, which is prevalent in Iran, along with a volatile political system and harsh practices of patriarchy and male domination that are legitimized by Iranian culture and traditions. The legacy of veiling in Iran is not a product of Islam and Islamic laws. Such a practice had existed in Iran centuries before the appearance of Islam in Mecca. The veil predates Islam, and during the ancient dynasties in Persia the veil and harem were common practices. The veil has often been a source of male domination and patriarchy in Iran. During the twentieth century, the coercive unveiling and re-veiling have played important roles in the repression, exclusion and seclusion of women, which have assisted the state to continue its domination over women and achieve political gains and progress.

Only Sound Remains is an installation in which I explore and share those experiences through objects, sounds and video. Ceramic vessels inspired by the traditions of my ancestors hide and shape sounds that narrate simple and complex experiences, which are the stories of my life. The sounds relate to the world that I came from and that still can be heard now. The sounds are not clear until one gets close to the vessels and lifts the lid-- a bazaar, praying, marching, an explosion, a woman telling a story, traditional Iranian music. The installation is a metaphor for the way in which we experience the world. The vessels represent a selection of personal and cultural experiences through sounds that may or may not be fully understood.

- Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir, an alternative perspective on the Middle East, a mirror for the West.

- Abstract/Description

This project presents a three-level analysis of Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir to elucidate the way these films deconstruct the image of the Middle East that the dominant Western media perpetuate. The thesis demonstrates that the combination of highly expressive and easily understandable animated form with an autobiographical storyline that endows the films with attractive authenticity, personification and intimacy, creates a palatable setting for the intellectual texts. The thesis demonstrates that the combination of highly expressive and easily understandable animated form with an autobiographical storyline that endows the films with attractive authenticity, personification and intimacy, creates a palatable setting for the intellectual texts. Further, this project discloses the ways representation gives rise to stereotypes and illustrates how the films articulate an alternative to the dichotomous perception of West versus Middle East. The movies impersonate a unique, subjective insight into the past, emphasizing that history is an ongoing, non-linear process that depends on where and who is narrating it, and to whom. Understanding that public memory is shaped by media content, the thesis asserts the necessity for more cultural texts that deconstruct the norm and eliminate bias.
