Show moreSexual experiences and freedom are basic human rights that people with disabilities are often denied. Society and those considered to be within the general public, including caregivers, family members, and professionals that work with people with disabilities, contribute to the lack of sexual experiences and opportunities people with disabilities have throughout their lifetime. This study examined the attitudes of males and females from the general public toward sexual lives for people with disabilities. Further, it explored the difference in attitudes based on disability condition, examining attitudes toward a sexual life for those with a physical disability, intellectual disability, and general or non-specified disability. Results showed that female respondents reported more positive attitudes toward females with disabilities and females without disabilities having a sex life in comparison to the attitudes male respondents reported toward males with disabilities and males without disabilities having a sex life. Additionally, respondents felt the least positive toward adults with intellectual disabilities having a sex life. Limitations of this study and implications for further research are discussed.

The information was used to determine whether the mentoring experience affected their attitudes and beliefs regarding individuals with ID as well as whether mentor personal growth occurred as a result of participation in the mentoring experience. The research suggested that participants from all groups of mentees did experience a change in their attitudes and beliefs regarding those with ID. Those changes in attitude and beliefs were overwhelmingly positive. Peer, staff, and faculty mentors also reported many benefits from participation in the mentoring experience including but not limited to increased self-awareness and self-improvement.

The arguments preventing socialist unity during this time period provided distinct and separate approaches to art and literary criticism, a phenomenon undetected in previous scholarship.

Show moreCollege students with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) are afforded many educational opportunities through Inclusive Post-Secondary Education (IPSE) programs, including employment training. Competitive employment can contribute a rich independent life, thus more employment training opportunities can be beneficial. Low employment rates for adults with ID have motivated these efforts to develop proper employment training. In the past, on-the-job (OTJ) training with a job coach was one of the only supports for adults with ID in the workplace. Now, there are a variety of evidence-based strategies that can be used in the workplace or in other community settings, such as Covert Audio Coaching (CAC), to teach adults with ID the skills they need to maintain a job. This study used a multiple probe design to examine the effects of CAC on teaching workplace communication skills to college students with ID in a real-world setting. In this study, students interned in an office setting and spoke to a co-worker at their work setting while the interventionist used a two-way radio system to provide coaching statements to the student during their conversations. All students in this study increased their on-topic communication exchanges, and these results demonstrate that CAC is an effective intervention for this population.

There are over 3,000 universities and colleges throughout the United State, yet only 272 of them offer programs for students with an ID (Think College, 2017). Within the identified programs, there is variation in location, length, goals, and methods (Grigal, Hart, & Weir, 2012). This study used an iterative classification process to first identify the programs serving students with ID located on college campuses, then analyze program websites to determine how they increase selfdetermination (SD). Phase 1 of the study used categorical sorting to identify programs that (a) served students with identified intellectual disabilities who had exited the school system; (b) were located on a college campus; (c) were run by a college; and (d) followed a college semester/quarter calendar. Phase 2 involved reviewing the websites for the programs meeting those criteria to identify self-determination activities and classes. In Phase 3 of the study, an online survey was sent to program administrators to verify and expand the description of self-determination activities. Results of this study show college programs for students with ID promote SD through instruction; however, the teaching methods vary from program to program. SD instruction is delivered by staff, peer mentors, and faculty. Programs measure SD outcomes; however, the tools used vary from program to program, and they are not applied systematically. The examination of college program practices and outcomes is central to further program development. Future research is needed to determine long-term independent living and employment outcomes of students with ID who attend college programs.

- Attitudinal study of older adult African Americans' interaction with computers.

- Abstract/Description
-
It was estimated that 35 million people age 65 or older lived in the United States in 2000. Of that number 2.8 million were Black/African American. The U.S. Census Bureau's (2000) population projections show that there will be 70 million older adults age 65 or older by 2030 and African Americans are expected to comprise over 12% of that population. In 1993 older adults had made less elective use of computers than younger adults, accounting for 24.2% of those age 55 to 64 and 4.9% of adults...

The U.S. Census Bureau's (2000) population projections show that there will be 70 million older adults age 65 or older by 2030 and African Americans are expected to comprise over 12% of that population. In 1993 older adults had made less elective use of computers than younger adults, accounting for 24.2% of those age 55 to 64 and 4.9% of adults over age 65. By 2003 adults over age 65 recorded a 20.1% increase in computer usage becoming the fastest growing segment of computer users who are engaging in learning computer skills as a way of coping with the technological changes. Studies have found that greater experience with computers is associated with more positive attitudes; however, it has never been determined whether this is true of the older African American population since there is a paucity of research documenting their computer attitudes. This study utilized a mixed methods research design that included an experimental design and an inductive approach with interviews. The following findings emerged: (a) attitudes differed for older African Americans who received computer training and those who did not; (b) there was no distinction in computer attitudes between older adult male and older adult females in the African American population; (c) there was no interaction effect on computer attitudes as moderated by training and gender; (d) older African Americans exhibited a positive disposition towards computers which elicited positive attitudes towards the technology; (e) older African Americans had a nascent need for computer self-efficacy; and (f) older African Americans constructed new meaning regarding computers as a result of their reflection on their computer interaction experience., The findings have established that older African Americans' attitudes can be influenced by direct computer experience and the study extends prior research by identifying the process by which attitude change takes place.

Show moreThe role of the Intellectual in Latin America has been marked by his/her political activism. Whether engaging in nation-building like Sarmiento or Marti; or fighting against corruption and tyranny, like Vargas Llosa or the group of Chilean intellectuals who helped bring democracy back to Chile, intellectuals in Latin America leave the relative isolation of the academic world to enter the political arena. This doctoral work, divided in two parts (an academic essay and a novel), explores the struggle of intellectuals, in particular writers, who are required to function as high level politicians due to structural weaknesses in the political systems of their countries. I argue that Latin American intellectuals feel compelled to serve as politicians to fill in the void left by traditional political parties. Among the reasons I cite to support my claim are inefficient political institutions; government corruption; a weak state unable to support the necessary requirements for democracy; and popular demand, all of which call for public intellectuals to step up to the plate and amend the "perceived" prevailing political chaos. The first part of the dissertation, Public Intellectuals in Latin America: Writers and Politics, compares the achievements of intellectuals in Europe, China and the United States with that of their Latin American counterparts. The second contains an in-depth analysis of Latin American intellectuals focusing on three case studies: Sarmiento, Vargas Llosa and the group of Chilean intellectuals who were key in the transition to democracy in Chile. To round up the discussion, I include an interview with two modern day intellectuals: Dr. Eduardo Gamarra, a political analyst and Dr. Victor Bulmer-Thomas, director of the Royal Institute of Foreign Affairs. The second part, Quetzalcoatl's Feathers, is a satirical work of fiction conceived as a mordant attack on stereotypes. Set in a fictional community of English-speaking Ixil Indians (inhabiting a remote area of the Guatemalan Highlands) the novel addresses issues of ethnicity, cultural imperialism and bilingualism, as it illustrates the misadventures of two misguided, if well intentioned, fictional intellectuals bent on bringing prosperity (with careless disregard for the human cost) to their marginalized community.

Show moreMarcus Tullius Cicero exerted a major influence on rhetoric: intellectual writings, oratory, and education in the Early Italian Renaissance. Cicero's humanism expressed a fellowship with society and included justice, reasoning, moral and social duties to the community. It eventually replaced traditional learning and established a pattern of classical studies that was to continue for centuries. The Early Italian Renaissance was basically a cultural, literary and scholarly movement that represented an important and new phase in the study and interpretation of the history of classical antiquity and played a unique role in Western cultural history. This paper explores the extent to which contemporary authors have identified the similarities and differences between Cicero's humanism and the humanism of the Early Italian Renaissance. The author suggests areas requiring further research.

Show moreThe ceuvre of Jeanne Marie Le Prince de Beaumont, the public intellectual whose pedagogical journals and epistolary novels were routinely shelved in private eighteenthcentury libraries alongside the works of the period's most famous philosophes, today remains virtually unknown. Beyond the scant available studies limited to her pedagogy and fairy tales, it is time to explore the theoretical aspects of those and other of her texts as significant alternatives to traditional Enlightenment discourse as epitomized in the contemporary philosophes. Through her personal roles of governess to British and French aristocracy, editor of a French-language periodical featuring such contributors as Voltaire and Graffigny, and author of internationally recognized pedagogical manuals, the most famous of which included her timeless version of "Beauty and the Beast," Beaumont challenged a nascent female audience to actively participate in the intellectual discourse of their society, and used her real-world experience to develop a pedagogical methodology founded on the ideals of thought, debate, and action ("penser, parler, agir"). A Cartesian insistence on the separation of mind and body informed much of her argument in favor of women's intellectual capacity, and carried through to her discussion of such socio-political topics as women's equality, agrarian reform, religious tolerance, and social stratification. Not just a gatekeeper of information or a synthesizer of male-produced theories on education and other issues of social concern, she was rather an innovative thinker advancing active, personal commitment to public issues at all levels regardless of gender or social status. Also, promoting theories rooted in the mentoring of women by women as a means of personal realization, Beaumont further advanced French Enlightenment universalism through debate, reason, and action.

Show moreThis project considers the dual nature of early English thinker Francis Bacon as both a man of science and a devout Christian, through the texts Advancement of Learning, A Confession of Faith, and Of Gardens. Regardless of Bacon's preaching that the progression of scientific knowledge brings one closer to God, in fact human dominance over the natural world undermines religious faith. In particular, Bacon's own interest in early English gardening is used to illustrate the degradation of religious mysticism due to the rise of scientific discovery. Historically, Bacon has been credited as the catalyst of the scientific revolution due to his proposition of a new system of scientific inquiry based on empirical and inductive principles and the development of new arts and inventions. However, Bacon's embrace of the physical sciences and support for human advancement contradicts his alignment with religion. This tension is at the heart of the paper.
