Show moreThis thesis emphasizes and evaluates the effect of different income specifications, absolute, relative and permanent, in the various stochastic equations comprising a macroeconomic model. Multiple least squares regression is employed to estimate the stochastic equations; and a dynamic multiplier simulation program evaluates the stability and calculates the impact and interim dynamic multipliers of each resultant model. The results point to an absolute income specification with the quickest response to fiscal and monetary policy. In addition, there are inherent specification problems as enlightened by review of the size of the total impact multipliers.

Techniques used in the theoretical study are Lorenz-Gini Index , the Lognormal Distribution and Pareto's Law, Chapter II covers the methodology; Chapter III, a survey of the literature; Chapter IV, theoretical analysis and empirical results; Chapter V, summary and conclusions with recommendations for further research. Income data was extracted from the Department of Commerce's P-60 series for each year during the period. It is the conclusion of this thesis that the size distribution of non-white incomes has not changed significantly during this period.

A SPECTRAL ANALYSIS OF MONEY, INCOME AND EXPENDITURE.

Creator

-
Abstract/Description
-
This thesis tests whether a simple income-expenditure model is a better predictor of induced expenditure and thus income than a simple quantity theory model. A spectral analysis was performed using alternative definitions of money, income and expenditure. From the results of cross spectral analysis, it was concluded that the money supply is the better predictor of short run (8 months - 3 years) fluctuations in consumption and thus in income.

Show moreThe federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program, authorized in 1986, has gained recognition over the last decade as America's largest place-based subsidized housing production program. The Qualified Census Tract (QCT) provision of the LIHTC program awards developers for projects built in high-poverty neighborhoods. This research examines whether the QCT provision is deconcentrating poverty or instead perpetuating it by comparing QCTs with LIHTC projects against QCTs with no LIHTC projects. In this study, a socioeconomic index is created to examine changes in socioeconomic variables (poverty, income, unemployment, and education) using 1990 Decennial Census data and 2005-2009 American Community Survey data for the twenty most populated MSAs in the United States to determine how LIHTC projects have changed the landscape of poverty in urban QCTs. Control and target groups were established to analyze the impact of LIHTC projects in QCTs. The control group consists of QCTs with no LIHTC projects and the target group contains QCTs with LIHTC projects. In order to determine how the socioeconomic variables have changed over the last fifteen years, the percent change from 1990 to 2005-2009 was calculated for each tract. Independent Sample T-tests were conducted at the national level, MSA level, and county level (when the sample size was large enough) using SPSS to determine if the difference in the target group's derived socioeconomic index and variables were significantly different from the control group. The findings indicate the target groups overwhelmingly outperformed the control groups for the socioeconomic index and every variable except unemployment. The results of this study may be valuable for policymakers to develop thresholds and guidelines for future LIHTC development in areas concentrated by poverty.

Show moreLack of resources, mental health issues, low self-esteem, financial hardships and other maladaptive coping patterns are stressors that significantly impact low-income mothers. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and perceived stress among low-income Brazilian mothers. Additionally, the study investigated the influence of age, educational level, and employment status on the relationship between participants’ emotional intelligence and perceived stress. Sixty-eight (n = 68) adult low-income Brazilian mothers receiving financial assistance from the Centers of Reference in Social Services (CRAS) in Brazil participated in this correlational study. Recruitment and interviews of the participants were conducted by Brazilian case managers. The Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14), and a demographic questionnaire were used to collect data. Results from a Pearson correlation coefficient (Pearson’s r) test indicated a negative correlation between emotional intelligence and stress in the sample. The findings from the multiple regression analysis revealed that the correlation between emotional intelligence and perceived stress in low-income Brazilian mothers does not differ based on age, educational level, or employment.

Two models were tested for each time period . The Becker-type model used a Black-White male median income ratio as a dependent variable with age, education, three occupational mix variables, and current population as the independent variables. The second model used the same variables with the exception that current population was replaced by population lagged ten years. All variables were in Black-White ratio form. The results are of interest to the student of the economics of discrimination, since the methodology can be applied to the examination and comparison between any two categories of people.

Show moreThis study examined how two high schools have successfully increased graduation rates while serving minority-majority and impoverished communities. Data collected for this qualitative, multi-site, case study employed publicly-available archival materials, interviews, focus groups, and observations in leadership meetings to help narrate a story that takes into account the complexities of human relations, specifically those in school settings in an urban school district. Thirty-four participants were selected by the principals at the participating schools and included members of their leadership teams, such as literacy coaches, assistant principals, magnet coordinators, students, parents, security specialists, and guidance counselors. The conceptual framework of the study was based on three research questions. The first question examined the synergistic relationships between the selected middle and the high schools with the purpose of addressing students’ at risk of dropping out factors in the areas of academic engagement, behavior, and attendance. The second question investigated the different types of initiatives enacted to provide support and efforts to engage or reengage students. The third question was used as a guide to observe the effects that the principals have on the work of stakeholders and how they serve their students. This study examined the various ways in which two high schools and their three feeder middle schools combine efforts to reengage students academically and socially. The selected high schools have demonstrated success in graduation rates while serving minority-majority students in areas of poverty, as determined by the high percentage of students qualifying for the Free and Reduced Lunch program. The findings indicate the existence of purposeful collaboration between personnel with an emphasis on programmatic continuum, communication, and other initiatives to strengthen articulation. Further, this study identified various forms of support programs for students to remain engaged or reengage, such as extracurricular activities, mentoring, and expansion of interest-based classes. Lastly, the findings demonstrate that the principals involved in this study clearly established a mission and vision and their leadership teams enact such with a balance between their own initiatives and adherence to the goals of their respective school leaders.

The data are quarterly observations on three measures of income and two of consumption. The study begins with a survey of univariate and multivariate model building techniques. With the life cycle - permanent income hypothesis as a foundation, theoretical models of income and consumption are discussed. These models are then fit to the data and examined. Tests for causality are also covered in order to determine the manner in which the two processes are related in a multivariate model.

Show moreI begin by identifying right-libertarians as individuals who believe, foremost, that legislators should reduce the size of the national government. A number of right-libertarians support a Congressional tax reform proposal, the Fair Tax. This support is surprising because the bill is revenue neutral : it therefore does not directly address concerns over increasing Congressional spending or growth of government. Are right-libertarians sacrificing their principles for expediency or is there some other explanation? I argue right-libertarians mainly support the bill because they (1) believe Congress would abolish the IRS as soon as it went into effect, increasing citizens' privacy in the process ; and (2) view it as a gradual reform that would lead to further legislation intended to reduce the size of government.

Show moreThe Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) known as Miami Fort Lauderdale Pompano Beach consistently gains migrants from both the United States and abroad. However, despite the constant increase in population, the domestic out-migration for Miami-Dade County has consistently been more than the domestic in-migration. Recently a similar trend is occurring in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The continual gain in population despite the domestic out-migration is mostly due to the large international in-migration for the region. Using data from the Internal Revenue Service, this paper discusses the migration of domestic populations and determines if possible new trends exist for this MSA. Furthermore, income data collected from the IRS was used to establish any possible relationship between migration and income.
