Show moreMy thesis is that the extraordinarily heavy occupation and fortification of the British Channel Islands by German forces, during the Second World War, proved to be a strategic error. The number of troops necessary to defend the Islands and the amount of fortification was more than was required, when their size and importance is considered. Enormous quantities of weapons, building supplies, equipment, and manpower went into the construction of the Island defenses. After the Battle of Britain had decided that the invasion of Great Britain was not to be, the importance of the Channel Islands was greatly diminished. In the end, Hitler's obsession with occupying British soil was to cost the German army dearly in the later stages of the war.

Show moreThe purpose of this historical study was to discover (a) if the absence of a common, understandable definition of community education was a primary reason for the field's apparent lack of recognition in the public education arena and (b) if the definition problem was also associated with the concerns of community educators about the future viability of the field. The study was open to the discovery of another or other feasible reasons for the problems confronting the field. Its purpose was achieved through an examination of the media of the community education field and other pertinent media. The researcher surveyed the educational origins of the community education movement in the United States in order to explore the historical context of the movement that has its roots in Flint, Michigan, and to discern its possible relationship to earlier educational movements. Additionally, the researcher (a) examined the development of community education in Flint, from its beginning as a recreational program to its growth into a community school program and its maturation into a community education process, and (b) surveyed several definitions published during the maturation period. The evolution of the movement on a national level was also explored, as were several continuing issues that dealt with the implementation of the community education process on a field-wide basis. Discovered in the strategies offered to resolve the issues was the consensus that the field needed to become committed to its process components, especially community involvement. The community involvement component was considered to be the factor that made community education different from public education. The study revealed that the absence of a common, understandable definition of community education was not a primary reason for the problems confronting the field of community education. The researcher discovered a more tenable reason for the problems: Community educators had not fully implemented the process components of community education on a field-wide basis, especially the community involvement component. Throughout the development of community education, the field's leaders had maintained that community education would not succeed without this implementation. Other conclusions and recommendations for further study were offered.

After attending Georgetown University, he married Maryellen Howley of Lake Worth and joined his father’s real estate development firm. In 1958 he established Philip D. Lewis Real Estate, a commercial and industrial real estate company based in Riviera Beach. He and his wife became the parents of nine children, all educated, as were their parents, in local parochial schools. He was elected to the Florida Senate in 1970 and served as that body’s president 1979-1980. Since leaving elected office he has served the county and the state in a myriad of ways, often drafted for service by Florida governors for posts ranging from chairmanship of aging and water management studies to post-hurricane reviews and service on blue ribbon education panels. Throughout his adult life Lewis has been involved in civic and charitable activities, and he remains an active Catholic layman and advisor to leaders of The Diocese of Palm Beach and The Archdiocese of Miami.

Consequently, Mr. Northcutt enlisted in the B5 flying program of the U.S. Navy the following year. He served as a Naval fighter pilot during the last two years of World War II and during his service earned four Gold Stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and a Citation for Meritous Achievement. Following the war, Mr. Northcutt joined his mother, who had moved to Atlanta, and finished his AA degree. Afterwards, he went to law school at the University of Georgia with the aid of the GI Bill. Although he graduated from law school, Mr. Northcutt has never practiced law. He instead became a real estate developer, and in the early 1970s came to Florida for a real estate deal in Bal Harbour. He has lived here ever since. Although now 82 years old, Mr. Northcutt is still an active developer, and along with his wife of twenty years, Kaye Lynne, a sponsor of the arts in Florida.
