Show moreAssigning stereotypical behaviors and traits associated with young people—selfabsorbed, narcissistic, lost, technologically dependent, disrespectful, financially unstable, etc.—to Millennials have become common practice in popular media and colloquial discourse and are not without consequence. Although the contemporary discourses circulating through society appear to be characteristically Millennial, similar discourses have historically appeared in conversations surrounding preceding generations. This thesis uses five popular culture case studies that capture the zeitgeist of both young Boomers and Millennials to compare discourses and critically examines the overlapping references between age groups and generational categories. This research also aims to bring visibility to the relevance of age getting lost amidst discourses about generations. Using textual analysis via discursive formations, this project reveals the reproduction of dominant power structures among generational discourses and poses implications to those power structures.

Show moreIn the last few decades, the world has witnessed an unparalleled increase in human longevity, accompanied by more years of employment and declining birth rates. These unusual events have dramatically raised the portion of older employees who are still active in the global labor force. Scholars have recognized that, along with the overall aging of the workforce, older individuals will increasingly occupy leadership positions. Since the current knowledge economy promotes a globalized, competitive, and rapidly evolving educational and business environment, organizational leaders are increasingly facing challenges to keep their leadership knowledge base current. Organizational leaders must attract and retain the best human capital, competent individuals who can act strategically to move their organizations forward. Consequently, it is prudent to believe that, in order to face the new challenges of an aging work force, organizations will require exceptional leaders to maintain a cohesive organizational system in which diverse generational cohorts may interact and work together efficiently and effectively. Using leadership identity theory, dynamic capabilities, and the leadership trait approach as the conceptual framework, this study assessed intergenerational perceptions of the importance of seven leadership traits: intelligence, decisiveness, compassion, innovation, organization, ambition, and honesty using a national sample of almost two thousand adults in the United States representing four generational cohorts: Millennials, Generation X, Baby Boomers, and the Silent generation. This quasi-experimental quantitative study sought to identify the differences in perception of the importance of leadership traits that each of these generational cohorts may have and the interaction that gender and educational level may have on generational cohort perceptions of the importance of leadership traits. Descriptive statistical analysis and comparative analyses including one-way and two-way ANOVA were conducted to determine any statistically significant differences in means among the differences in means of the perception of the importance of leadership traits among generational cohorts moderated by gender and educational level. Statistically significant findings for some, but not all, of the seven leadership traits included in this study were found by generational cohort and these differences were moderated by gender and educational level. Implications and recommendations for policy, practice, and future research are offered.

It is hoped that by examining geographic location, improvements can be made to the present Florida Standard Urban Transportation Modeling Structure (FSUTMS). To analyze the impact of geographic location, GIS technology will be used. GIS will aid the study in several ways. It will be used to identify urban centers and major highways within the study area and once this is accomplished, GIS will be used to create zones around the selected urban centers and the major highways. Finally GIS will be used to prepare the survey data for statistical analysis. In addition to looking at geographic location, the study will also examine whether certain lifestyle variables can influence residential trip rates within the study area. Throughout this study it is hoped that the predictive power of the Florida Standard Urban Transportation Modeling Structure can be improved.

Show moreHelping through acts of philanthropy is a cultural norm in the United States. People of all generations give to a variety of causes, including their alma maters. Research shows that millennials had positive experiences at their institutions and want to stay engaged. However, they are more likely to donate to their favorite cause than their alma mater. This study investigates what motivates the millennial generation to give to their undergraduate alma mater. Building on existing work targeted at giving, it asks: To what extent does personal experience affect millennials giving to their alma mater before graduation, during the process of graduation, and after graduation? Based on the review of literature on generational giving, and the theory of planned behavior, a survey was distributed targeting millennials who met the following two criteria: 1) born between 1980–2000, and 2) graduated with an undergraduate degree between 2005 and 2015. A secondary analysis of data was employed to correlate the findings from the close-ended survey and examine the giving trends among millennials and how those trends vary among the other three giving generations: mature/silents, baby boomers, and Generation X.

However little work has been carried out in one of the fundamental aspects that allows for these systems to operate in seawater. Therefore a series of tests were carried out to determine how the electrochemical reactions occurring at the electrodes affect the seawater system. These tests were used to determine the effects magnetic fields have on seawater conductivity, the pH changes around the electrodes, and consider the double layer capacitance model as a means to decrease the amount of gas bubbles created at the electrodes. As a result significant increases in resistivity in seawater were observed when the magnetic field was introduced, pH changes were seen on both the cathode and anode, and pulsing of the applied potential may stimulate further work to be considered.

Using Sonja Foss’s guidelines for analysis of visual rhetoric, I analyze 24 selected examples of Facebook content posted by two pro-life organizations (Human Coalition and Feminists for Life) and two pro-choice organizations (Planned Parenthood Action and NARAL Pro-Choice America) in 2017. My analysis found that the visual rhetoric posted by both organizations on social media can and does function as a form of visual metonymy. Because of this, these visual strategies can stand in for more complex arguments in dramatic ways.

Certain features, like overlap and difference in number of ! and " steps determine the recursion formula. In the case of ballot paths, that is paths the stay weakly above the line y = x, the solutions to the recursions are typically polynomial sequences. The objects of Finite Operator Calculus are polynomial sequences, thus the theory can be used to solve the recursions. The theory of Finite Operator Calculus is strengthened and extended to the multivariate setting in order to obtain solutions, and to prepare for future applications.

Show moreOne of the de ning characteristics of the modern Internet is its massive connectedness, with information and human connection simply a few clicks away. Social media and online retailers have revolutionized how we communicate and purchase goods or services. User generated content on the web, through social media, plays a large role in modern society; Twitter has been in the forefront of political discourse, with politicians choosing it as their platform for disseminating information, while websites like Amazon and Yelp allow users to share their opinions on products via online reviews. The information available through these platforms can provide insight into a host of relevant topics through the process of machine learning. Speci - cally, this process involves text mining for sentiment analysis, which is an application domain of machine learning involving the extraction of emotion from text. Unfortunately, there are still those with malicious intent and with the changes to how we communicate and conduct business, comes changes to their malicious practices. Social bots and fake reviews plague the web, providing incorrect information and swaying the opinion of unaware readers. The detection of these false users or posts from reading the text is di cult, if not impossible, for humans. Fortunately, text mining provides us with methods for the detection of harmful user generated content. This dissertation expands the current research in sentiment analysis, fake online review detection and election prediction. We examine cross-domain sentiment analysis using tweets and reviews. Novel techniques combining ensemble and feature selection methods are proposed for the domain of online spam review detection. We investigate the ability for the Twitter platform to predict the United States 2016 presidential election. In addition, we determine how social bots in uence this prediction.

These aging baby boomers will amass significant wealth either through inheritances or their successful businesses. It is therefore critical that professional fundraisers identify how to effectively communicate with the affluent members of this generation to develop them into major donors. Using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews, this research examines characteristics and traits of baby boomers, identifying seven common themes that can be used to develop communication strategies. It concludes that affluent baby boomers demand accountability from charitable organizations and value meaningful experiences. They are focused on personal accomplishments and are deeply family oriented. Messages must be concise and delivered by those respected by the donor. High-tech media are preferred.

Show moreWhen a boundary-layer flow, either laminar or turbulent, encounters a hemispherical body extending from a surface, a horseshoe-shaped vortex forms at the juncture. In this thesis, we study the evolution of this vortex using a numerical inviscid model and laboratory experiments. The numerical model is based on determining the evolution of the filament using the cut-off method. The assumption is that although the generation of the vortex depends on viscous effects, the dynamic evolution is well described by inviscid equations of motion. It is found that the vortex filament is fairly steady on the upstream side but on the downstream side, travelling waves appear on it which cannot be suppressed through evolution. For a range of Reynolds number, steady horseshoe-shaped vortex was obtained in the experiments, revealing the shape past the hemisphere. This is compared with the numerical results.

Show moreThis study demonstrates the relationship between intergenerational trauma and domestic space, specifically focusing on how Holocaust survivors’ homes became extensions of their traumatized psyches that their children “inhabited.” Based on my analysis of literature and oral histories of the second generation, my project employs the theory of postmemory to demonstrate how the spatial and temporal conditions of survivor-family homes, along with the domestic practices and objects contained therein, rendered these domestic milieus spaces of traumatic contagion. Postmemorial structures often functioned as spaces that afforded few illusions of familial permanency, thereby familiarizing survivors’ children with an intimate and pervading fear of external threat at a young age, which challenged or precluded feelings of parental protection and refuge within the domestic. I discuss the ways by which the second generation’s inherited perceptions of space—along with their inherited perception of matter and time— structured and structure their perceptions of their domestic lives. This study explores how, in turn, postmemorial structures shaped and shape the second generation’s inherited perceptions of space, matter, and time. As survivors’ traumas were registered in the very space of their homes, their homes functioned as material archives of their Holocaust pasts, creating domestic environments that commonly also wounded their children. In addition to survivors’ unspoken traumas, their spoken narratives of the Holocaust were also imbued in the space of postmemorial structures to such an extent that these homes became the very “framework” or “architecture” of their psychosocial lives. I argue that insofar as survivor-family homes were imaginatively transformed by survivors’ children into the sites of their parents’ traumas—whether they were concentration camps, ghettoes, places of hiding, etc.—their domestic spaces became central technologies that catalyzed and perpetuated the intergenerational transmission of Holocaust trauma and embodied experience. I further argue that the ways by which they describe their home lives constitute indirect expressions of their belated relationships to the Holocaust.

Completing this survey inspired further study into a method of generative modeling known as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). A survey on GANs was conducted to understood recent developments and the problems related to training them. Following this survey, four experiments were proposed to test the application of GANs for data augmentation and to contribute to the quality improvement in GAN-generated data. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of GAN-generated data as a pre-training metric. The other experiments discuss important characteristics of GAN models such as the refining of prior information, transferring generative models from large datasets to small data, and automating the design of Deep Neural Networks within the context of the GAN framework. This Thesis will provide readers with a complete introduction to Data Augmentation and Generative Adversarial Networks, as well as insights into the future of these techniques.

Show moreThis study is performed as a partial aid to a larger study that aims to determine if electromagnetic fields produced by underwater power cables have any effect on marine species. In this study, a new numerical method for calculating magnetic fields around subsea power cables is presented and tested. The numerical method is derived from electromagnetic theory, and the program, Matlab, is implemented in order to run the simulations. The Matlab code is validated by performing a series of tests in which the theoretical code is compared with other previously validated magnetic field solvers. Three main tests are carried out; two of these tests are physical and involve the use of a magnetometer, and the third is numerical and compares the code with another numerical model known as Ansys. The data produced by the Matlab code remains consistent with the measured values from both the magnetometer and the Ansys program; thus, the code is considered valid. The validated Matlab code can then be implemented into other parts of the study in order to plot the magnetic field around a specific power cable.

Show moreForty-one women filled out surveys about their heterosexual sexual behavior over the course of 30 days. These surveys tracked their menstrual cycles, sexual behavior, sexual desires, and orgasm frequency. Although the sample size was small, a number of borderline statistically significant (p < .10) trends emerged from the analysis: women experienced more copulatory orgasms on average when fertile and women who were not in relationships tended to have more frequent non-copulatory orgasms. Naturally cycling women also experienced significantly more non-copulatory orgasms when fertile. Although no strong conclusions can be drawn from the current sample, the results suggest many avenues for future research.

Show moreThe American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2016) contends meeting the challenge to transform care will require the successful leadership development, preparation, and role support of the next generation of nurse leaders. Despite the urgency to transform care, meeting the challenge to lead this charge cannot be accomplished without the successful recruitment and retention of Millennial nurses to leadership positions. Identifying the leadership role expectations and support variables that are important to these young managers and creating the milieus that support these views serve to address many pressing succession planning needs. This study explored the experience of being a Millennial nurse manager, seeking to understand how these young nurse managers make meaning of their lived experience. This was a qualitative interpretative phenomenological research study. Three theoretical perspectives contributed ideologies that framed this inquiry: Ray’s (1989) theory of bureaucratic caring, generational cohort theory (Strauss & Howe, 1991), and authentic leadership theory (Avolio & Gardner, 2005). A purposeful targeted national sample of 25 Millennial nurse managers with a minimum of one year of nurse manager experience in the role participated in audio-recorded telephone interviews. Content analysis identified seven themes: Coming into the Role, Learning as I Go, Having the Support of My Director, Making an Impact, Helping Staff Succeed, Managing Change, and Trying to Stay Balanced. Findings from this study suggest Millennial nurse managers gauge role success and satisfaction in relation to their perceived levels of support and development and their ability to master role expectations. Additional findings suggest adequate succession planning for the nurse manager role remains challenged by the lack of formal mandated requisites for the role. The nurse manager role as it stands varies significantly among organizational settings regarding responsibilities, mechanisms of support, number of direct reports, and span of control. Recommendations included the need to address the nurse manager role, academic requisites, and developmental variances in practice. Additionally, re-evaluating the organizational responsibility to the leadership development of these young nurse leaders is recommended to ensure their retention and success in the role.
