Show moreThe project starts from a literature review of the topics from these aspects: the studies of emission models, the eco-driving applications for heavy-duty vehicles (Trucks), Eco-driving and signal control, the benefits from CAVs and Simulation using MOVES and VISSIM. The research on Multiclass/heterogeneous traffic modeling is also reviewed. To define the problem, the research starts with the analysis of the influence the truck percentage has on the individual signalized intersection and on a coordinated signal corridor. The simulation results show the high percentage of heavy-duty vehicles in traffic may significantly degrade the signal control based on the concept of delay optimization mainly considering passenger cars. To solve the problem, an eco-driving strategy for freight mobility control at signalized intersections is introduced. It is by optimizing the travel time while maintaining optimal fuel consumptions and emissions. A two-level dynamic optimization is formulated. An emission weighted optimization is used to simulate vehicles passing the intersection with balanced travel time and emissions savings and compared to a baseline simulation without eco-driving consideration. A jerk penalty is added to ensure safety and comfort. Heavy-Duty Vehicles (HDVs) are the focus of this modeling effort. The emission term in the optimization used an instantaneous speed-acceleration based microscopic fuel consumption models and the results were validated by EPA's MOtor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) model. The results from this study showed that the weighting factor of the emission term in the objective function reaches an optimal at 0.5. Generally, the proposed method provided dynamic trajectories with slightly longer travel time than the baseline but reduce the emission at about 4% for Nitrogen oxide (NOx) and 7% for carbon dioxide (CO2) for different initial conditions (different distance approaching intersection). Based on the results, an optimal weighting factor of emission term and the range of distances to apply the eco-driving strategy are recommended. A case study is performed to simulate the recommended model, with varying HDV percentages. The test results showed an overall emission reduction of 6% for NOx and 6% for CO2 according to MOVES. To show the relationship between truck percentage and discharge rate, a multiply linear regression is conducted, and the results are shown in the appendix. The data in MOVES and the emission models used are also presented in the appendix.

As transportation demand increases various transportation networks are facing increasing congestion. To mitigate the high-density impact of congestion on transit operations, TSP is a significant solution and has been widely applied to improve transit service quality and increase bus ridership. TSP can be planed and implemented considering many variables to achieve several valuable benefits such as: reducing transit travel times, better schedule adherence, and better transit efficiency. The objective of this research is to develop warrants and performance standards for transit agencies to implement signal priority based on identified decision factors. The research assesses existing guidelines and provides new guidelines for TSP implementation. Furthermore, this research evaluates the effectiveness of TSP in improving the performance of public transportation bus lines. The improvements are assessed by comparing the total travel time and total delay on the same single corridor with and without TSP applied utilizing microscopic analysis. The results show significant improvements in reducing the travel times and delays for the buses as a result of applying the TSP.

The World Shipping Council (2014) indicates that “it would require hundreds of freight aircraft, many miles of rail cars, and fleets of trucks to carry the goods that can fit on one large liner ship”. According to the data provided by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD, 2015), the overall international seaborne trade reached 9.8 billion tons in 2014 with a significant increase of containerized (5.6% in tonnage), dry (2.4% in tonnage), and major bulk cargo (6.5% in tonnage) from 2013. Similar growth is expected to continue. Most of the high-value cargo and general consumer goods are shipped in a containerized form. Liner shipping companies, looking for transport efficiency and economies of scale, have increased vessel size on most of the trade routes. The Journal of Commerce (JOC), 2015 highlights that CMA CGM placed an order for six vessels with 14,000 TEU capacity in the first half of 2015 after an earlier order for three 20,000 TEU vessels. Maersk has recently ordered eleven 19,500 TEU vessels, while MOL and OOCL placed orders for vessels with 20,000 TEU capacity. Note that the number of megaships is projected to increase by at least 13% by 2020 (Journal of Commerce (JOC), 2015).

A reliable and accessible freight network enables the business to be competitive in the US. However, many urban roadways are facing challenges with traffic volumes being over capacity during peak periods. As a result, time and money are lost due to traffic congestion. Operational and design constraints such as interchange, steep grade, signalized intersection, work zone, merging, lane drop, and others, could contribute additional delays for commercial vehicles. This study leveraged our previous effort to measure and identify truck bottlenecks in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area (TCMA) by using the National Freight Performance Management Research Data Set (NPMRDS). The research team worked with stakeholders to prioritize a list of key truck corridors in the TCMA. Such functions are typically not sensitive to the level of commercial truck presence in the traffic stream are therefore of limited value in analyzing freeway network level operational policies that need to explicitly consider commercial truck traffic (e.g., truck lane restrictions or truck-only lanes). Furthermore, travel time reliability (TTR) is taking on increased emphasis in traffic operations analyses. Microsimulation is a tool that can potentially be used for network-level analyses, but when combined with TTR analysis, the computational burden can be problematic. The Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) freeway facility TTR analysis methodology is less computationally intensive than microsimulation and is more sensitive to traffic stream vehicle composition than typical network analysis link performance functions. However, this methodology is currently only applicable at the facility, not network, level. This project extends the HCM freeway TTR analysis methodology to the network level by integrating user equilibrium (UE) traffic assignment. The proposed freeway network TTR analysis methodology generates scenarios that represent the impacts of origin-destination (OD) demand variation, weather events, incident events, and work zone events on the freeway network. For each scenario, UE traffic assignment is performed for the freeway network, and the method of successive average (MSA) is applied to solve the UE traffic assignment. Travel times (and/or other performance measures) obtained from all the scenarios are aggregated into various distributions of interest, such as the network-, facility-, and OD-level distributions, and TTR performance measures are calculated at the three different levels. In addition, a software tool was developed based on the revision and integration of two existing software programs. The software tool provides a convenient and efficient approach for transportation planners and researchers to conduct the freeway network TTR analysis methodology.

Accurate and reliable freight data on freight activity is essential for freight planning, forecasting and decision making on infrastructure investment. A report entitled “Twin Cities Metropolitan Region Freight Study” published by MnDOT and the Metropolitan Council in 2013, suggested a need to understand where and when trucks are most affected by congestion. A framework for truck data collection and analysis was recommended to better understand the relationships between truck traffic and congestion in rush hours. Building upon our previous study to measure freight mobility and reliability along 38 key freight corridors in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area (TCMA), this study leveraged our previous effort to implement the performance measures using the National Performance Measurement Research Dataset (NPMRDS) from the USDOT. The researcher team first worked with stakeholders to prioritize a list of key freight corridors with recurring congestion in peak periods in the TCMA. We used 24 months of NPMRDS data to measure travel time reliability and estimate truck delay at the corridor level and to identify system impediments during the peak hours. The objective is to use performance measures for assessing impact of truck congestions and identifying operational bottlenecks or physical constraints. Trucking activity nearby a congested area is examined to analyze traffic pattern and investigate possible causes of recurring congestions.

Freight delivery is a potential application that is getting lots of attention from large companies. This research presented novel data, relationship, and models for deliveries utilizing small UAVs. Small UAVs were defined as aircrafts with a tare of up to 15 kilograms (kg) and a potential payload of up to 15 kg. Since the weight of the UAVs is capped, only drones with engines that are electric were included; noise and pollution problems are likely to hinder urban deployments of internal combustion engines. Internal combustion engines are mostly used in larger UAVs. The scope of the search was limited to multicopter drones that can potentially deliver in both urban and rural areas. Fixed-wing drones were excluded from the search because currently only copters have the capability of hovering and delivering products in tight spaces (required in urban areas); fixed-wing UAVs typically cannot land or take off vertically. Single copters can hover similarly to helicopters, but were not included in the search because these aircrafts tend to be larger, and the size of the propeller and blade made them unsafe for areas without a large. Multicopters or multi-rotor drones can hover but also have higher stability and maneuverability, which makes them more suitable for navigating tight spaces or flying near humans and/or valuable property.

These innovations include truck platooning, smart parking systems, collaborative and shared logistics techniques, and connected autonomous vehicles. These new technologies are influencing consumer behavior and reshaping freight supply chain management at the urban, regional, and international level. In order to understand how these innovations are changing the field of freight transportation, it is essential to understand how organizations choose to adopt innovations. Adoption methods available from consumer behavior research are mostly based on individuals, and there is limited material on the behavior of organizations in regards to innovation adoption. The general adoption methods cannot be directly used in modeling adoption of innovations by organizations without further study and modifications. Approaches to innovation adoption can be broken into two sections: theoretical and methodological approaches. The theoretical approaches attempt to identify the forces that cause an organization to accept or reject an innovation. Once the forces have been identified, the theoretical approaches explain how the forces interact and influence the adoption process. Methodological approaches are composed of modeling techniques which can be applied to innovations in order to generate predictions of adoption patterns. By identifying the benefits and drawbacks of each approach, it is possible to select the most appropriate theoretical and methodological approach for organizational adoption.
