Show moreComputers are an integral part of our society. The educational system is under considerable pressure to integrate computers into the curriculum both as a subject and as a teaching methodology. While research shows that there are positive trends in computer availability, most teachers have not yet fully integrated technology into the curriculum or their pedagogical methodologies. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of the principal's use of the microcomputer and other principal characteristics. This included the location of the computer used, ethnicity, years of experience in education, age, gender and education, to the degree to which computer technology is integrated in the classroom. The sample was comprised of 40 elementary schools selected at random from Broward County and Dade County, Florida. A random sample of at least 20 teachers from each school was administered the Levels of Computer Use (LCU) survey to determine the degree to which technology was integrated into the classroom. The Technology Use Survey (TUS) was administered to the principal of the school to determine the level of computer use by the principal and other demographic factors related to the principal. Results indicated no significant relationship between the degree to which technology was integrated in the classroom, as determined by the LCU, and the principal's use of the microcomputer (r =.0779, p >.05). Moreover the location of the computer (r =.1068, p >.05), years of experience of the principal (r =.2505, p >.05), age (r =.0301, p >.05), gender (r =.1223, p >.05) and education (r =.0013, p >.05) were not found to have significant relationships with the degree to which technology was integrated in the classroom. A significant relationship was found between the ethnicity of the principal (r =.4582, p <.01) and the degree to which technology was integrated within the classroom. Suggestions for future research include studying the principal's role in the school in terms of their management or leadership role in the integration of technology in the curriculum. Future research should study other possible leaders in the school's organizational culture that might serve as a role model, and investigate the degree to which the principal's ethnic background may actually represent the socio-economic background of the school and other issues of equity.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to describe the influences that impact upon an individual faculty member as he or she makes the decision whether or not to participate in technology-based distance education. A two-site, qualitative case study design was used and the primary sources of data were interviews, document analysis, and researcher non-participant observations. The sample of 20 included ten higher education faculty members who currently are teaching courses using distance learning technology and ten who are not, five from each category at each of the two sites. Findings were grouped and addressed by seven areas of influence: trappings of the job, instructional quality, pioneering spirit, leadership, student needs and capabilities, supporting students, and competition and image. Within the seven areas, 21 specific influences were identified and described. Strong enhancers were an interest in emerging technology, desire to improve the current situation, changing student demographics, need for increased flexible access to educational opportunities, technology training and assistance for students, student to student support systems, distance-friendly student services, competition with other institutions, and collaboration. Detractors included extra workload, tenure and job security fear, love of the traditional classroom paradigm, lack of a reliable technology infrastructure, lack of administrative direction and support, and a negative image of distance education. Acting both as enhancers and detractors were student readiness, match of technology with learning sought, ability to create an interactive learning community, and ability of students as independent learners. The conclusion is drawn that faculty members at these two institutions are more likely to decide to use technology-based distance education if they hold four primary beliefs: (1) that it can produce a quality learning experience, (2) that it will better meet student needs, (3) that they personally are capable of developing and/or delivering it effectively, and (4) that it is to their advantage to develop and/or deliver it. These four beliefs are in their order of importance as voiced by the participants in this study. Recommendations are offered to administrators, in the form of specific actions to take to encourage participation by faculty members at their institution.

Show moreUbiquitous incorporation of computer-based, electronic technologies into American society has created intense pressure upon the composition instructors at Florida's community colleges to develop computer skills themselves and to develop curricula which routinely incorporate these technologies into their teaching responsibilities. This fact makes clear the need to assess instructors' readiness: What computer skills have they acquired and what computer-aided teaching methodologies have they learned which make them capable of and willing to teach composition with the aid of computers? What support services on community college campuses seem to encourage instructors to take on the responsibility to teach computer-aided composition. After its pilot testing, a thirteen question survey was sent to the 473 known instructors of credit-level composition at Florida's twenty-eight community colleges. This study examined the characteristics of the 222 respondents, of whom 61 reported that they do teach computer-aided composition and 161 reported that they do not. One way analyses of variance applied to the survey responses of these groups compared them regarding their institutions' technology support services; regarding their familiarity with, training for, and uses of computer technologies in their personal and professional responsibilities; and regarding their participation in departmental, divisional, and institutional planning activities for technology enhancements. Findings revealed that, compared to those instructors who do not teach computer-aided composition, instructors who do are (1) more likely to be familiar with and use a greater variety of computer technologies for both personal and professional use, (2) more likely to serve on departmental committees which consider technology uses, (3) more likely to have in-office access to desktop computers, to have nearby full-service faculty/student computer labs, and to have greater access to computer hardware overall, and (4) more likely to have attended workshops and taken courses on computer technologies and on instructor methods for use of technologies. In responses to a Likert-like question, composition instructors who do teach with the aid of computer technology also expressed greater than expected professional satisfaction with computer-aided composition as compared to traditional methodology.

Show moreThe purpose of this research study was to measure perceptions of the teaming process in distance learning courses. A survey instrument was adapted and developed based on the benchmarks found in a research study by the Institute of Higher Education Policy. Data was gathered from 100 students enrolled in an Internet-based (web-assisted, web-enhanced, or online) course in the College of Education at Florida Atlantic University. Results showed that the majority of respondents (n = 75 or 75%) were female, in the age range of 18--30 (n = 48 or 48%), were Caucasian American (n = 74 or 74%), were graduate students (n = 68 or 68%), had been using computers for 5+ years (n = 84 or 84%), had taken 1--2 Internet-based courses (n = 38 or 38%), and were taking the current course as an elective, as a requirement, and/or because it was convenient (n = 49 or 49%). A thematic analysis yielded three subscales, collaborative process, instructional design, and learning team process, for data analysis. The results of the study indicated that there are significant relationships between and among the subscales. Highly correlated variables in each of the subscales included the perception that communication with the professor should be facilitated through a variety of ways (M = 5.02), the perception that course materials should promote collaboration among class members (M = 4.56), and the perception that group work should include problem-solving activities to facilitate topic understanding (M = 4.66). Results from the survey questionnaire indicated that communication is crucial between professors and students. Course materials should be structured to promote collaboration among class participants, which in turn indicates how critical good instructional design is in the delivery of distance education courses. Activities that promote collaboration among students, such as problem-solving activities, should be considered in the course design and delivery so that teaming and collaboration occur. Research, interviews, and data analysis of the pilot study (field test) and final research study provided information for the development of the Virtual Learning Team Survey. This survey is designed to help develop effective and efficient distance education courses.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the program planning process used for planning technology programs for the South Consortium of Schools and of two member schools. This study sought to understand power and interests of the planning community and how they influenced the program process. A qualitative multi-case study design was used and the primary sources of data were interviews, document analysis, and researcher participant and nonparticipant observations. The sample of thirteen included a cross section of school personnel, parents, and community business partners. Findings were grouped into three categories, program planning community, program planning process, and negotiations of power and interests. Program planning communities were influenced by a national challenge to improve technology in the schools and by partnerships developed with parents, communities, and businesses. Factors critical to the planning process emphasized the importance of (a) having adequate time and information, (b) developing viable planning models addressing considerations of power and interests relationships, and (c) having effective managers and leaders. Program planning objectives focused on the acquisition of equipment versus integration of technology in the curriculum. Negotiations were the main practice of planning conducted by those in power who focused on meeting specific planning objectives. As a result of these findings, it was concluded that forming partnerships enhanced the program planning process, program planning models addressing negotiation of power and interests were not fully developed before planning began, and program planning attention was focused primarily on acquisition of equipment rather than integration of technology into curriculum.

Show moreThe purpose of this research project was to develop a predictive model for faculty integration of technology in higher education, specifically among faculty who are members of the Commission of Professors of Adult Education. The variables included both those that the educational institution could affect, such as technical support, release time, tenure and promotion opportunities, and personal variables of faculty, such as computer self-efficacy, attitudes towards computers and perceived institutional support. Three hundred and eighty-nine (389) surveys were mailed to the sample participants. One hundred and twenty-four (124) were returned completed, thirty-six were returned undeliverable and seven were deemed unusable, for a return rate of 33.14%. The survey used in this study, the "Instructional Technology Integration Assessment" was adapted from the Computer Self Efficacy Scale (CSE), developed by Murphey and others (1988) and the Middle Tennessee State University Survey developed by Lea, Brace and Roberts (1998). Multiple regression was performed, using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to determine which of the variables showed a stronger influence on the dependent variable. Integration of technology significantly correlated with five of the variables: Job Satisfaction (.403, p < .001); Quality of My Instruction (.422, p < .001); Tenure and Promotion Opportunities (.240, p < .05); and the Impact of Technology on the Depth and Breadth of Content and Student Participation (.347, p < .001). Years Teaching in Higher Education was negatively correlated with Integration (-.185, p < .05). With a multiple regression correlation coefficient (R) of .550, the squared multiple correlation coefficient (R2) resulted in .303. Thirty percent (30%) of the variance in integration could be accounted for by the predictor variables. Analysis of responses to open-ended questions revealed three main themes in regards to barriers and incentives for technology integration: psycho/social barriers, student readiness barriers and institutional barriers. Suggestions for future research included adding variables such as learning style, teaching style and fear of change to the overall survey.

Out-of-school time networks have developed in many cities to promote access to youth programs and activities that foster development, bolster academic outcomes, and open career pathways (Allen et al., 2017). Networks have long been shown to play a role in the adoption of innovations (Ryan & Gross, 1943). Community educational networks or STEM ecosystems specialize in promoting content relating to topics of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). There has been increasing demand for STEM programs which exists alongside a scarcity of resources and expertise (Afterschool Alliance, 2014; Liou & Daly, 2021; Henderson et al., 2011). To overcome these hurdles, networks make strategic efforts to mobilize resources with the “goal of creating institutional and broad infrastructure support for activities and programs that contribute to child and youth development in the out-of-school time hours” (Hall & Harvey, 2002, p. 3). The maintenance of innovations, including educational services, can be a challenge especially in times of social crisis (Pemberton, 1937). There is little known about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the factors that influence the sustainability of STEM programs in OST. While there is a growing demand for access (Afterschool Alliance, 2014), there is also a lack of research on the sustainability of STEM educational activities in OST settings. Evaluating disparate organizations each with unique goals and strategies relating to a single citywide initiative presents a challenge for researchers (Baum, 2001). The present research utilizes an implementation science framework to fill a gap in the literature on the factors relating to the sustainability of STEM in OST. This empirical research explores STEM networks in two US cities in 2020. This research describes facilitators and barriers to sustaining STEM education in various contexts (e.g., school-related programs, community-based programs).

Recognizing the growing importance of technology-mediated learning interventions, the researcher sought to gain a deeper understanding of how mindset influenced the use of technology particularly amongst college of education faculty in Florida public 4-year universities. Data analyses revealed the following findings: (a) Although participants shared a range of integration patterns, faculty predominantly integrated technology for knowledge transmission, backstage activity, and communication purposes; (b) Participants predominantly occupied the integration phase of technology implementation, suggesting that they used technology committedly, but in ways that were familiar and common; (c) The way participants perceived and approached technological realities influenced their patterns of technology integration; and (d) Faculty shared similar concerns about the challenges and benefits associated with technology integration in their classrooms. The key implications that emerged from this study were that student-centered technology implementation practices were underrepresented, and that faculty seemed ill-equipped or underprepared to implement strategies surrounding accessibility.

Show moreThis mixed methods study examined secondary teachers’ technology selfefficacy, their professional development activities regarding mobile handheld devices, and how those activities affect their use of mobile devices as instructional tools. Additionally, this study also explored teachers’ perceptions of other factors that act as barriers or enablers to their use of such devices. The study included 104 middle and high school teachers who taught in a large, urban public school district in the Southeastern United States. Data were collected through the administration of an electronic survey and semi-structured interviews. The researcher utilized multiple regression and moderator analyses, as well as qualitative analysis of the interview data. The results of the multiple regression analysis revealed teachers’ technologyrelated self-efficacy to be a significant predictor of their instructional use of mobile handheld devices. However, secondary teachers’ level of professional development was found not to contribute significantly to the model. The moderator analysis too revealed professional development to be a nonsignificant factor. The findings of the qualitative phase of the study revealed secondary teachers’ awareness of their varied and fluid technology-related self-efficacy, as well as those factors that modify it. Qualitative data also revealed four categories of essential elements that teachers must have in order to most effectively implement mobile handheld devices within their pedagogy: intellectual capital, emotional capital, social-cultural capital, and technological capital. When lacking, these elements can represent barriers to teachers’ implementation of mobile handheld devices. Targeted professional development and increased funding to minimize the digital divide are recommended to reduce these barriers. The findings of the study inform designers of professional development programs, school and district and secondary teachers, as they are all stakeholders in the process of increasing the effective implementation of mobile handheld devices as instructional tools.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of using learner self-assessment and multifaceted instructional strategies on student achievement and retention in online mathematics classes. The study used a quasi-experimental design. The study sample consisted of 35 students who were enrolled during the fall term 2010 in online Precalculus or Trigonometry classes at Palm Beach State College. Both treatment and comparison groups were taught by the researcher. Since the subjects in the study were not randomly assigned, the design was one of nonequivalent groups where the treatment group was compared to a similar group from the previous year. To limit researcher bias, the course exams were the same for both treatment and comparison groups. Five hypotheses were developed to examine the relationships between preferred learning strategies, the use of online tools, and achievement and retention. The five hypotheses were investigated with the following procedures respectively: ANOVA, linear regression, Pearson correlations, t-test and chi-square, and linear regression analysis with dichotomously coded variables. The findings indicated that the ATLAS groups did not show a preference for online tools, except for ebook. In addition, the use of most tools predicts achievement. The ebook is the only tool that is not significantly related to all the other tools. Achievement was not significantly different among treatment and comparison groups, but retention was. Retention for the treatment group surpassed retention for the comparison group by 15%. Results also pointed out that the ATLAS groups moderate the relationship between some of the online tools predicting achievement.

Show moreThe purpose of this research was to assess how prepared Florida's State University System (SUS) institutions have been during the past five years (2008-2013) in responding to the challenges of globalization. The research also established institutional trends for the past five years (2008-2013) and projections for the next five years to seize the opportunities offered by globalization and to produce graduates with global competency skills. Ten of the 12 SUS institutions studied in this research were Florida A&M University (FAMU), Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), Florida International University (FIU), Florida State University (FSU), University of Central Florida (UCF), University of Florida (UF), University of North Florida (UNF), University of South Florida (USF), and University of West Florida (UWF). The research was conducted as a case study using multi-method approach. The quantitative analysis was based on the information collected from the institutions and from the integrated postsecondary education data system (IPEDS). The qualitative analysis was based on the institutional mission statements, vision statements, and strategic plans. The quantitative analysis used six data parameters to compute a globalization composite index (GCI) for institutional comparisons and for establishing trends and future projections. Integrating quantitative and qualitative analyses led to the research findings of this study. Based on this study, the institutional preparedness for globalization has been low for six SUS institutions (FAMU, FAU, FGCU, UCF, UNF, and UWF) and has been medium for the remaining four (FIU, FSU, UF, and USF). The trend analysis showed that institutional preparedness could be improved significantly if robust and focused efforts are made over the next five years. In that case, the institutional preparedness for FAMU, FGCU, UNF, and UWF could ascend to medium; for FAU and UCF, it could improve to medium+; and for FIU, FSU, UF, and USF, it could reach high. The research concluded with some recommendations to help the leadership of Florida and the SUS institutions in responding effectively to the challenges of globalization. Medical and educational research have demonstrated that ASD children's social skills and adaptation can be much improved, provided that interventions are early and intensive enough. The advancement of computer technologies and their ubiquitous penetration in people's life make them widely available to support intensive sociocognitive rehabilitation. Additionally, computer interactions are a natural choice for people with autism who value lawful and "systematizing" tools. A number of computer-aided approaches have been developed, showing effectiveness and generalization, but little quantitative research was conducted to identify the critical factors of engaging and improving the child's interest and performance. This thesis designs an adaptive computer interaction system, called Ying, which detects learning patterns in children with ASD and explores the computer interactive possibilities. The system tailors its content based on periodic performance assessments that offer a more effective learning path for children with ASD.

Show moreThe purpose of this research study was to determine K-12 school leaders' concepts of ability and technology readiness. The Theories of Intelligence Scale (TIS) was used to analyze concepts of ability and the Technology Readiness Index (TRI) 2.0 was used to analyze the technology readiness of K-12 school leaders. Data from the two instruments were used to determine if there was any relationship between K-12 school leaders' concept of ability and technology readiness. This analysis filled a blank spot in the research contributing to the literature on leadership, Mindset Theory (Dweck, 2006; Dweck, Chiu, & Hong, 1995), and Technology Readiness (Lin & Hsieh, 2012; Parasuraman, 2000). Furthermore it helped to determine the state of K-12 school leaders' status as 21st century leaders. The sample consisted of the school leaders of School District of Palm Beach County (SDPBC). This included 158 principals from 104 elementary, 31 middle, and 23 high schools. The researcher was a school district employee and therefore had access to the participants. Each of the four null hypotheses were rejected as SDPBC school leaders scored significantly higher on the TIS (p < .05) and TRI 2.0 (p < .01), there was a significant (p < .0125) positive relationship between TIS and the TRI 2.0, and that relationship was affected (p < .05) by gender, race, and experience.

Show moreThis phenomenological, mixed-method study compared and contrasted virtual K- 12 school leadership with traditional face-to-face leadership. All 106 participants served for a minimum of two years in each setting. The study was conducted in two phases in order to reveal consensus and dissensus points of view. Conceptually, a postmodern framework was used to deliberately create spaces for new leadership ideas to emerge through surveys and interviews. The data included teachers and leaders from charter, district, and state virtual K-12 schools. Phase one of the study used a modified Delphi methodology, consisting of an Internet-based survey and semantic differential survey. The second phase was a round of interviews, seeking similarities and differences between leadership in the two domains. Using the lens of postmodernism, the nuances of difference arising from contextual factors were examined, along with the often-unheard voices of dissensus within the ranks of virtual K-12 leaders and teachers. Among the major findings, the study revealed no significant differences in leadership between traditional and virtual K-12 leaders. A new paradigm of “leadership by design” was uncovered as one possible means of innovating through virtual K-12 leadership.

First, the study assessed whether Davis’ (1989) Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was useful in predicting instructional usage of the interactive whiteboard (IWB), as reported by K-8 teachers. Second, the study set out to understand what motivated those teachers to use the IWB for classroom instruction, and to further describe the ways in which they used them. Through surveying 155 teachers and 40 administrators of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) schools, the researcher used multiple regression and moderator analyses to examine whether the TAM model helped explain teachers’ reported teacher-centered and student-centered instructional IWB usage. The researcher followed this by oneon- one interviews with 5 of the teachers surveyed. With the data gathered from the interviews and open-ended items from the original surveys, an analysis using qualitative methods was performed. The results from the qualitative analysis were then used to help refine and explain the quantitative findings. The results of the study’s quantitative phase indicated two variables adapted from the TAM, teachers’ perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of the IWB, contributed to the prediction of teacher-centered instructional usage of the device. Further it was found that the perceived usefulness variable contributed to the prediction of student-centered instructional usage. Moderator analysis indicated the variable for teachers’ IWB technological pedagogical content knowledge, adapted from Mishra and Koehler’s (2006) technological pedagogical content knowledge framework, moderated the relationships between the variable perceived ease of use of the IWB and teacher and student-centered instructional usage respectively, as well as between the variable perceived usefulness of the IWB and teacher-centered instructional usage. The qualitative phase results revealed those teachers surveyed used their IWBs in a variety of ways for both teacher-centered and student-centered instruction. Teachers frequently reported they were motivated to use the device by its overall user-friendliness and its utility as an instructional tool. Central to the teachers’ discussion of its utility were ways in which the tool positively impacted the students during instruction. Specifically how it engaged students by attracting their attention, keeping them focused, and offering them a better way to learn.

With the advancement of technology and the tremendous growth of online learning, the learning management system (LMS) has become the tool for delivering distance education. E-learning platforms have witnessed exponential uptake by the education and corporate sectors over the past three to five years (Wadhwani & Gankar, 2020). From this author's experience in the field of instructional design and online instruction, all LMSs are just a "database with a different user interface (Price, 2016)". But are there opposing perceptions from the online learner regarding two different systems of learning? With the migration of one LMS to another LMS at a large public state university, can an assumption be measured to determine significant differences between the two LMSs? This quantitative research aims to answer if there are significant differences in online student perception between two different learning management systems. Using responses to Instructor Evaluation Forms during four academic years (12 semesters), this study determined if a significant difference existed between the perceived quality of two learning management systems. Moreover, this study added to a minimal body of research regarding improving the quality of learning management systems based on the perception of online students.

Show moreThis mixed-methodology study examined the effect of using Electronic textbook highlight and animation tools on the knowledge and comprehension achieved by10th grade students. Eighty-two students enrolled in a regular World History course were purposefully selected and assigned to 1 of 4 groups: (a) Highlight, (b) Animation, (c) Highlight-and-Animation, or (d) Comparison. A One-Way ANCOVA with a Bonferroni Adjusted Alpha was used in analyzing the results of the knowledge and comprehension World History pretest and posttest that were administered. A Factorial ANCOVA with a Bonferroni Adjusted Alpha was used in analyzing the influence of the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) moderator. Using the eEdition World History textbook tools of highlight and animation did not significantly impact the World History knowledge and comprehension scores achieved by participants and the participant's SRI level did not significantly moderate the relative effectiveness of the conditions. Interview data from 3 Student Focus groups and 1 Teacher Focus group were analyzed with an open exploratory coding strategy. The resulting classification code of "ease of use" was characterized by: (a) time required to learn to use the tools, and (b) time to complete the tasks. A second code, "choice" was characterized by: (a) choice of instruction tools, and (b) choice in monitoring and assessing student activity. The focus groups indicated that they would use the tools in the future due to benefits such as the ability to modify the information to match their learning and instructional preferences. They also stressed that more instruction on the use of eEdition tools was needed.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to compare the achievement and completion rates of students in traditional face-to face classrooms to that of students in the same courses, taught by the same instructors, via the Internet using WebCT as the learning management system. The possibility of a mediating effect of subject matter area, student age, race, gender and previous college experience was also examined. Subjects for the study were 796 students enrolled in general education courses that were offered in the traditional classroom setting and in the distance learning format. The three general education courses chosen were American History, English Composition and Mathematics for Liberal Arts. Approximately half of the students participated in each format; 50.5% were in distance learning courses and 49.5% were in the traditional face-to-face courses. Student achievement was determined by final course grade and tested using an independent two-sample t-test. Completion rates were calculated for both groups and the difference between groups was tested using a two-sample z-test. To study the impact of subject matter, age, race, gender and previous college experience on student achievement and completion rates in both methods of instruction, a series of two-way ANOVAs were conducted for each group and each variable. A post-hoc analysis using the Tukey HSD procedure was conducted on any variables that tested to have a statistically significant effect on the academic achievement or completion rate in either delivery method. The findings of this study indicate that there was no difference in student achievement as measured by final course grade between distance learning and traditional classroom delivery methods. The main effect for age, race, gender and previous college experience was statistically significant on student achievement. The interaction effect was statistically significant for subject matter and previous college experience on student achievement. There was a statistically significant difference between completion rates of students enrolled in traditional face-to-face courses compared to those in distance learning courses. The traditional courses have a higher completion rate than the distance learning courses. The variable with the greatest mediating effect on academic achievement and completion rates between delivery methods was subject matter area.

With the inclusive practices of No Child Left Behind, the Common Core State Standards, and end-of-course exam requirement for high school diplomas, classes include a large range of achievement levels and abilities. Teachers assume, often incorrectly, that students come to class prepared to listen and take notes. In a standard diploma, high school biology class in a separate school for students with emotional and behavioral disorders, five students participated in a single-subject, alternating treatment design study that compared the use of regular pens and digital pens to take notes during 21 lecture sessions. Behavior measures were threefold between the two interventions: (a) quantity of notes taken per minute during lectures, (b) quantity of notes or notations taken during review pauses, and (c) percent of correct responses on the daily comprehension quizzes. ... However, the differences were minor, and recommendations are made for specific training in note-taking, the pause strategy, and digital pen fluency which may produce different results for both note-taking and quiz scores.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceived effectiveness of a multimedia tutorial for first year undergraduate students (FTICs) using a university course registration system; to determine if a relationship existed between perceived effectiveness of the multimedia tutorial, gender, major, ICT usage, ICT education, ICT fluency, and ICT comfort; and to describe the transfer of learning, if any, that resulted from viewing the multimedia tutorial. The study was both quantitative and qualitative in design addressing 10 research questions. The instruments used in this study consisted of the Registration Tutorial which included: (1) an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Fluency Questionnaire (Hilberg, 2007), (2) a multimedia tutorial designed by the researcher demonstrating the university course registration system, and (3) the Registration Video Questionnaire (RVQ) also designed by the researcher measuring perceived multimedia tutorial effectiveness. A Registration Video Tutorial Transfer of Learning Questionnaire (TLQ) was also developed by the research to measure perceived proficiency with the registration system three months after initially viewing the multimedia tutorial. The sample included 1,196 freshmen students from a large public university in the southeastern United States. Results of the study showed that students perceived the multimedia tutorial to be effective (M = 4.19, SD = .756) and seven themes emerged through qualitative analysis as to why the tutorial was or was not effective. Results also showed there was no relationship between multimedia tutorial effectiveness and gender, major, or ICT education., There were however significant weak relationships between multimedia tutorial effectiveness and ICT usage (r = .095), multimedia tutorial effectiveness and ICT fluency (r = .286), and multimedia tutorial effectiveness and ICT comfort (r = -.133). Furthermore, transfer of learning occurred for students (n = 66) who completed the TLQ (M = 4.01, SD =.777) and as suggested by qualitative analysis of student responses. Implications of this study suggested that providing first year undergraduate students with a web-based multimedia tutorial is just the beginning and the need may be to focus upon the development of these students as adult learners so they can feel successful in the early stages of their academic career, thus building the self-confidence they need to effectively navigate the university environment.
