This study analyzes the behaviors of producers and consumers in the supermarket industry and finds that the neoclassical school lacks a realistic behavioral theory. We observe that institutional behavioral theory is closer to reality because it recognizes that consumers are affected by their social environment through habit and emulation, and producers are survival maximizers. These social obstacles prevent humans from acting like homoeconomicus. We focus only on the supermarket industry, but this conclusion can be applied to all industries.

Show moreHuman knowledge is acknowledged as critically important to economic growth and prosperity. Economists focus on the past few decades’ emergence of a knowledge-based economy greatly dependent on individual-level knowledge. Knowledge is a key resource of many organizations, and the need for an educated workforce is believed to facilitate the creation, share, and use of firm-level knowledge going forward. An economy where knowledge is the main asset is very different from traditional production systems that depend on tangible assets. These tangible assets often rely upon scarce resources such as minerals, thereby forcing price fluctuations and potential disruptions in inventory and sales. Logistics and supply chain issues can dwindle as we have experienced during the recent pandemic. However, when knowledge is the firm’s main asset, the firm’s intangible asset will not decrease as sales increase. Knowledge also does not spoil or dwindle over time. Instead, knowledge will grow and evolve, and as the philosopher Aristotle once stated, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. The fact that knowledge as the main asset does not decrease as a result of production makes the knowledge economy an interesting phenomenon to study and to understand.

Show moreOver the last thirty years, intermodal freight transportation has been a constantly expanding sector. The vast increase of freight volumes contributes to the increase of various issues in the freight corridors as well as the urban environment. The deterioration of congestion in the urban environment and the increase on freight movements on the highways have resulted in the increase of emissions. For this reason, new policies and regulations are put forth to address the environmental effects of freight transportation. This study deals with the intermodal freight network design problem from the shipping company's perspective, aiming to simultaneously minimize emission levels and cost of freight transportation. We propose a mathematical model for optimizing the design of an intermodal freight network and the location of intermodal hubs between the origins and the destinations, under delivery time constraints. The goal is to identify the mode choice patterns considering transport cost and emissions, and the effects of new emission regulations on network costs. We consider a network with marine terminals as the origins, inland intermodal terminals as the hubs, and fulfillment centers as the destinations. Numerical experiments highlight that the proposed model can provide useful insights to the shipper.

The relevant efforts include the subject-matter of identifying the issues posed by emerging technologies, related revenue considerations and environmental issues in modern telecommunications practice specific to service providers' perspectives. The topic-wise problems studied and analyzed are as follows: (1) A comprehensive portrayal of managerial concerns and considerations on the technoeconomical perspectives vis-a-vis modern telecommunications; (2) Relevant analytical studies pertinent to: (1) "Greenfield starts" in a fresh, telecommunications deployment in a virgin service zone; (2) Embedded architectures; (3) Technology enhancements; (4) Environmental issues. The greenfield effort is analyzed to portray the feasibility of achieving technoeconomically optimal alternative designs. The embedded architecture refers to the prevailing infrastructure and their optimal usage is indicated via an arbitrated traffic-sharing technique. Concerning technology enhancements, "all-optical" technology is indicated as the ultimate goal. However, in the interim period, the optimal use of transitory technology such xDSL, MPLS, and others, is suggested and studied. Lastly, the environmental implications that coexist with technoeconomical impacts on modern telecommunications deployment are analyzed.

Show moreThis research is concerned with the technoeconomic aspects of modern and next-generation telecommunications including the Internet service. The goal of this study thereof is tailored to address the following: (i) Reviewing the technoeconomic considerations prevailing in telecommunication (telco) systems and their implicating futures; (ii) studying relevant considerations by depicting the modern/next-generation telecommunications as a digital ecosystem viewed in terms of underlying complex system evolution (akin to biological systems); (iii) pursuant to the digital ecosystem concept, co-evolution modeling of competitive business structures in the technoeconomics of telco services using dichotomous (flip-flop) states as seen in prey-predator evolution; (iv) specific to Internet pricing economics, deducing the profile of consumer surplus versus pricing model under DiffServ QoS architecture pertinent to dynamic- , smart- and static-markets; (v) developing and exemplifying decision-making pursuits in telco business under non-competitive and competitive markets (via gametheoretic approach); (vi) and modeling forecasting issues in telco services addressed in terms of a simplified ARIMA-based time-series approach, (which includes seasonal and non-seasonal data plus goodness-fit estimations in time- and frequency-domains). Commensurate with the topics indicated above, necessary analytical derivations/models are proposed and computational exercises are performed (with MatLabTM R2006b and other software as needed). Extensive data gathered from open literature are used thereof and, ad hoc model verifications are performed. Lastly, results are discussed, inferences are made and open-questions for further research are identified.
