Show moreRecent proposals for a European Monetary Union raise the prospect of a European-wide monetary authority. Successful implementation of monetary policy by a European central bank would require the existence of a stable relationship between the quantity of money demanded and other macro-variables. This thesis examines the issues and controversies arising from the movement towards European Monetary Union as envisaged by the Maastricht treaty. The theoretical basis of the estimation of dynamic money demand relationships is presented, and a dynamic error-correction model of a nine-country aggregate money demand function is estimated.

- PRODUCTIVITY AND INDUSTRIAL POLICY IN THE UNITED STATES.
- Creator
- HENN, PETER J., Florida Atlantic University, Stronge, William B., College of Business, Department of Economics
- Abstract/Description
-
This thesis examines the relationship between productivity growth and industrial policy using J.S. data from 1948 to 1981. A growth accounting model is used to study productivity growth and the recent productivity slowdown. Beth sides of the industrial policy debate are offered. The analysis of the productivity slowdown is then applied to the industrial policy debate to see if the establishment of the latter could have avoided the former. The thesis purports a negative response to the question.

Show moreThis study was conducted to analyze the impact of the budget deficit on key macroeconomic variables in the seven major industrial countries (G-7): Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Four models were developed to test the impact of the budget deficit on the variables of importance within the economies of the countries in question. The first model tested the relationship between the budget deficit and the short-term interest rate. The second explored the impact of the budget deficit on the long-term interest rate. The third model examined the impact of the budget deficit on the trade balance. The fourth and final model was specified to explain the relationship between the budget deficit and economic growth. The data utilized in this study covered the period from 1964 to 1993 and were gathered mainly from the international statistics of the International Monetary Fund. The data were standardized in the form of the percentage of the gross domestic product and the percentage change over the previous year in order to compile similar data across the seven countries. Multiple regression analysis as well as meta analysis were used to analyze the data. The multiple regression results indicated that the budget deficit leads to higher short-term interest rates in Japan and the United States. With respect to the long term-interest rate, the budget deficit led to an increase of this rate in France, Germany, and the United States. The budget deficit, however, appeared to worsen the trade balance in Canada. In Italy and the U.S., the trade balance improved with the budget deficit. With respect to the economic growth, the budget deficit is a significant variable of growth in France, Germany, and Italy. When the data for the seven countries were combined in meta analysis, the results showed that the budget deficit led to higher short-term interest rates in the seven countries. The budget deficit, however, did not manifest any impact on the long-term interest rates. The trade balance was worsened by the budget deficit and the economic growth improved in all the seven major industrial countries.

- Exogenous development vs. endogenous development in Haiti.
- Creator

From before its independence to the present day, Haiti has had exogenous development schemes imposed upon it. These schemes stem from the development theories of Western political-economic thinkers that Western powers and Haitian elites have implemented. Yet Haiti is today the most impoverished nation of the Western hemisphere. What has gone wrong? In reply, I examine a key power-based explanation for the failure. Show moreFrom before its independence to the present day, Haiti has had exogenous development schemes imposed upon it. These schemes stem from the development theories of Western political-economic thinkers that Western powers and Haitian elites have implemented. Yet Haiti is today the most impoverished nation of the Western hemisphere. What has gone wrong? In reply, I examine a key power-based explanation for the failure. I then examine the culturally-based practices, identity formations, and development aspirations of Haiti's popular class, and contrast these with exogenous development theory, praxis and outcomes. I show the profound "misfit" between the two and highlight conflicts that have arisen because of them. In Haiti, exogenous development forms will inevitably go awry because their starting points are and remain fundamentally flawed. An endogenous development form based upon the Haitian majority's culturally-based preferences and identities stands the best chance of bringing social justice and long-term stability to the nation.

This thesis is a study of China's economic transition from the traditional Soviet type socialist command economy which existed before 1978 to a market economy which China wants to achieve. Show moreThe International Monetary Fund/World Bank's campaign to restructure and revitalize Third World economies has been underway since 1977 but with little positive reviews. In the meantime, the living standards of the poor in these countries continue to deteriorate as more adjustment measures are employed. The purpose of this study is to challenge the "long-term benefits" argument by demonstrating that implementation of adjustment policies correlates with social decline. The study takes the form of a case study of Jamaica and traces the historical developments to explain the current debt crisis. A number of social indicators which include cost of living, health, education, housing and crime are used to assess and determine the relationship between structural adjustment and living standards. The study concludes that because the aim of these financial institutions is debt recovery, there is little regard for human resource development, an area that is key to breaking the current cycle of dependency. The result is an inverse relationship between structural adjustment and social well-being.
