Show moreThis thesis explores the production process of developing a virtual reality experience with an emphasis on digital humanities and the methods of adapting real-world events, narratives, and media coverage into an interactive, location based VR experience. The thesis contextualizes the production of an accompanying media project, which is informed by the history of U.S migration and the media’s impact on the opinion of Americans. Through the observation of production methods, this paper summarizes the process of creating a VR experience that expands the established production pipeline to more fluidly produce immersive interactive content. Using Homebound: The Interactive Immigrant Experience, a collaborative VR project as a prototype for these methods, we were able to integrate and develop a media production pipeline that uses off the shelf hardware in unison with Unreal Engine 4 to produce a prototype VR experience that follows the narrative on a Latin American Immigrant.

Show moreThe problem of immigration has been around since the dawn of man because humans cannot just stay in one place, especially if that place is not suitable for their lives and their families. It is a reasonable expectation of the human condition to want to feel free and safe because we do not live in a utopian society. There are social injustices, wars, and atrocities that threaten the most basic of human needs and freedoms in many countries across the globe. Homebound, the virtual reality experience, which was developed in Unreal, aims to make sense of this crisis and shed light on the lives affected by this social ill. By using rich environments, virtual production and motion capture, to construct a place that captures the realism of the illegal immigration narrative, this manuscript will show how behavioral and gameplay psychology, when paired with environmental storytelling, can be utilized to craft impactful and empathetic, immersive stories and edutainment experiences for the player.

Show morePerceptual video coding has been a promising area during the last years. Increases in compression ratios have been reported by applying foveated video coding techniques where the region of interest (ROI) is selected by using a computational attention model. However, most of the approaches for perceptual video coding only use visual features ignoring the auditory component. In recent physiological studies, it has been demonstrated that auditory stimuli affects our visual perception. In this work, we validate some of those physiological tests using complex video sequence. We designed and developed a web-based tool for video quality measurement. After conducting different experiments, we observed that in the general reaction time to detect video artifacts was higher when video was presented with the audio information. We observed that emotional information in audio guide human attention to particular ROI. We also observed that sound frequency change spatial frequency perception in still images.

In recent years, great advances have been made in face recognition and many studies mention results of 80% and 90% of recognition efficiency, however, most of these studies reported results using face images under controlled conditions. Current surveillance systems are equipped with low resolution cameras and are located in places with changing illumination, as opposed to a controlled environment. To be used in face recognition, images extracted from videos need to be normalized, enlarged and preprocessed. There is a multitude of processing algorithms for image enhancement, and each algorithm faces its advantages and disadvantages. This thesis presents a novel method for image enlargement of human faces applied to low quality video recordings. Results and comparison to traditional methods are also presented.

The most significant problem with this approach is the problem of finding objects in a color bitmap. A solution to the problem is proposed and evaluated using an analysis tool, developed for this thesis, called Workbench. Current image detection methods are evaluated and compared to the solution proposed using Workbench. The proposed solution is then evaluated for the YIQ and HSI color mappings. Show moreThis thesis describes the modeling of Martial Arts as a markup language. Up until now Martial Arts has already been documented in books, videos, tradition and other methods. Though to represent Martial Arts knowledge consistently and uniformly in a digital era, we introduce the Martial Arts Markup Language (MAML), which is based on XML. Because XML provides a standardized, serializable and portable format, MAML also enables sharing among students, teachers and their peers across different platforms, media and networks. MAML provides the ability, with appropriate XML tools, to document a Martial Arts style in a structured way. To achieve this, we first analyze the aspects that comprise Martial Arts; and how its states and processes relate to one another. We model in MAML describing the stances, transitions, punches, blocks, techniques, combinations, reactions and patterns used in Martial Arts. We discuss the implementation of MAML by observing and extracting the definable aspects in existing Martial Art Instructive Documents. The MAML Schema assures that the details of a Martial Arts Style’s elements are consistent. Current simulation efforts will be explained as well as areas for future development. We have described Martial Arts by observing what has already been done and creating a structured standard to document them. We hope to enable practitioners’ abilities to learn from and develop their arts by providing a resource in which they can interact with.

To understand and create an e cient method to process faces in images by computers, one must understand how the human visual system processes them. Face processing by computers has been an active research area for about 50 years now. Face detection has become a commodity and is now incorporated into simple devices such as digital cameras and smartphones. An iOS app was implemented in Objective-C using Microsoft Cognitive Ser- vices APIs, as a tool for human vision and face processing research. Experimental work on image compression, upside-down orientation, the Thatcher e ect, negative inversion, high frequency, facial artifacts, caricatures and image degradation were completed on the Radboud and 10k US Adult Faces Databases along with other images.
