Show moreIn light of the growing traffic demand and the futility of the conventional solutions, many states have been considering alternative intersection designs. Researchers have demonstrated the benefits of several unconventional intersection designs and their implementation at different sites throughout the United States and abroad have delivered significant improvement in traffic compared to the conventional intersections. A signalized and un-signalized roundabout, a Continuous Flow Intersection, and a Parallel Flow Intersection have been evaluated and compared in this research as viable alternatives to the traditional single intersection. Using micro-simulation platforms, AIMSUN 6.0 and VISSIM 5.10, models of each intersection are evaluated for low, medium, and high entrance volumes. The analysis revealed that the Roundabout performs better at low entering volumes while the Continuous flow yields better results at high volumes.

Show moreThis Thesis explores building low cost and reliable portable laboratory infrastructure platform for Logic Design, methods for allowing access to modern test equipment via the internet, and issues related to academic integrity. A comprehensive engineering education, per ABET, requires an equal emphasis on both lecture and laboratory components. The laboratory experience builds and establishes a foundation of skills and experiences that the student cannot obtain through any other means. The laboratory must use modern, pertinent methods and techniques including the use of appropriate tools. This is especially true when it comes to test equipment. Engineering students require and deserve training on and access to modern test equipment in order to obtain better career opportunities. However, providing access to modern and relevant labs requires a significant budget commitment. One way to extend current budgets is to adopt the growing concept of “remote labs.” This approach allows higher utilization of existing (and costly) equipment, it improves an institution’s Return on Investment (ROI), and also can be used to meet the needs of students’ complicated schedules, especially in the case of a “commuter campus,” where a majority of students live off campus. By developing remote labs, both the institution and the students benefit: Institutions increase equipment utilization, and utilize space, budgets and support personnel more efficiently. Students can access a lab whenever and wherever they have internet access. Finally, academic integrity must be protected to ensure the potential of remote laboratories in education. This Thesis presents a design and implementation plan for a low cost Logic Design laboratory infrastructure built and tested over 3 years by over 1,500 Logic Design students; a design and implementation of the infrastructure to include the ability to measure using remote test equipment; and the design of a case (3d printed or laser cut) to encapsulate a USB enabled micro-controller; and a scheme to ensure the academic integrity is maintained for in-person, hybrid and fully online classes.

This study presents a forensic investigation and dynamic characterization of reinforced asphalt cores obtained from SR15/US98 for evaluating the uniformity of test sections, qualitative comparisons, and developing empirical models for predicting permanent deformation and material damage with stress cycles simulating traffic loading.

One key to overcoming these challenges is exploiting Component Based Engineering practices. However it is a challenge to select an optimum component from a component library that will satisfy all system functional and non-functional requirements, due to varying performance parameters and quality of service requirements. In this thesis we propose an integrated framework for component selection. The framework is a two phase approach that includes a system modeling and analysis phase and a component selection phase. Three component selection algorithms have been implemented for selecting components for a Network on Chip architecture. Two algorithms are based on a standard greedy method, with one being enhanced to produce more intelligent behavior. The third algorithm is based on simulated annealing. Further, a prototype was developed to evaluate the proposed framework and compare the performance of all the algorithms.

Computer aided process planning (CAPP) system serves as the key linkage that interfaces CAD and CAM. In this research, a CAPP system, namely, RD-CAPP was developed using the variant process planning approach. This system is used to generate process plans automatically. The RD-CAPP system developed during this research uses group technology (GT) concepts and a relational data model. The application of the relational database management system and GT provides various advantages such as ease of information management, ease of modification and updating of information stored, ease of interlinking of various databases, etc. The effectiveness of the system described has been verified through the use of industrial data. The results of the study along with the development of various modules and the computer programs are discussed in this thesis.

Conversion of sequential code to parallel and concurrent code is neither easy, nor feasible with current methodologies. We have developed a mapping process that synergistically uses top-down and bottom-up methodologies. This process is amenable to automation. We use bottom-up analysis to determine decomposability and estimate computation and communication metrics. The outcome is a set of proposals for software decomposition. We then build abstract concurrent models that map these decomposed (abstract) software modules onto candidate multicore architectures; this resolves concurrency issues. We then perform a system level simulation to estimate concurrency gain and/or cost, and QOS (Qualify-of-Service) metrics. Different architectural combinations yield different QOS metrics; the requisite system architecture may then be chosen. We applied this 'middle-out' methodology to optimally map a digital camera application onto a processor with four cores.

The moisture contents of neat vinylester and unidirectional carbon/vinylester composite panels immersed in seawater were monitored until saturation. A model for moisture up-take was developed based on superposition of Fickian diffusion, and Darcy’s law for capillary transport of water. Both the predicted and measured saturation times increased with increasing panel size, however the diffusion model predicts much longer times while the capillary model predicts shorter time than observed experimentally. It was also found that the saturation moisture content decreased with increasing panel size. Testing of macroscopic and miniature composite transverse tensile specimens, and SEM failure inspection revealed more fiber/matrix debonding in the seawater saturated composite than the dry composite, consistent with a slightly reduced transverse tensile strength.

This thesis addresses the issue of design of a housing of LCD watch. An approach is developed to determine an optimal LCD watch design. An analysis and development of a design of experiment is performed to identify the major controllable variables to performed a statistical significance analysis on different shapes for LCD glass. A housing of LCD watch is modeled using Pro/Engineer (a parametric-based solid modeling system), and different shapes of LCD glass are tested using P3/Patran. A non-destructive static experiment is performed on the LCD. This experiment consisted of measuring the maximum displacement and equivalent stress. Taguchi method was used to analyze this experiment.

Show moreIn the last decades, population growth has been outpacing transportation infrastructure growth, and today's transportation professionals are challenged to meet the mobility needs of an increasing population. The effectiveness of the transportation system is an essential constituent of people's daily lives as they commute between different points of interest. Studies show that at many highway junctions, congestion continues to worsen, and drivers are experiencing greater delays and higher risk exposures. Engineers have very little resources to handle this increase in population. One solution to resolve and alleviate congestion due to increasing traffic volumes and travel demands relies in implementing alternative designs. This approach will help traffic engineers determine which design will be the most appropriate for a particular location. This study compares and evaluates the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), which is an unconventional design, to Partial Cloverleaf (ParClo) types A4 and B4 interchange designs by evaluating different Measure of Effectiveness (MOEs). Using microsimulation platform AIMSUN, each interchange type was evaluated for low, medium and high traffic flows. The analysis revealed that the DDI with four through lanes performed better than the ParClo A4 for unbalanced conditions, the DDI with six though lanes had similar results as the ParClo B4 for very high volumes. In terms of queue, the DDI design had a much better performance. The results from the analysis help in providing guidelines to the decision makers for selecting the best alternative in terms of performance.

Before reconstruction, falling weight deflectometer, rut and ride tests were conducted to evaluate the existing pavement and determine the statistical variability of critical site characteristics. Twenty-four 500ft. test sections were constructed on the roadway including sixteen reinforced asphalt and eight control sections at two test locations that possessed significantly different subsoil characteristics. NDE tests were repeated after reconstruction to characterize the improvements of the test sections. Test results were employed to quantify the stiffness properties of the pavement based on load-deflection data to evaluate the relative performance of the reinforced sections. Statistical analysis of the data showed the stiffness of the reinforced sections was consistently higher than the control sections.

These roads often exhibit large amount of cracking and distortion in a short period of time. Traditional repairs are often not practical due to high costs and extended construction time. In an effort to develop rehabilitation strategies that could be strictly applied to the surface layer, a pilot test site was selected along the alignment of SR 15/US 98 in northwest Palm Beach County, where severe pavement distresses were observed due to the presence of thick organic layers. PaveTrac MT-1, GlasGrid 8501, PetroGrid 4582, and ARMI were used as promising asphalt reinforcing products in 24 experimental pavement sections, including 8 control sections without any reinforcement. A comprehensive field testing and monitoring program involving FWD, rut and ride quality measurements was conducted at the preconstruction, 6-month post-construction, and 18-month post-construction stages. Due to large variability in the sub-surface conditions, a statistics-based data analysis protocol was developed for performance evaluation and relative comparisons of the test sections and, in turn, reinforcing products. Post construction data from both 6 months and 18 months demonstrated that stiffness of reinforced sections were significantly higher than the control sections. Procedures were developed to identify and statistically quantify the benefits derived from the reinforcements only, so that the relative performance of various products could be monitored over time. Based on the field testing data available to date, a framework was developed in this study for the prediction of pavement life, which is essential for conducting a detailed Life Cycle Analysis

Show moreThe impingement of supersonic jets on surfaces is of interest because of its important application to jet blast deflectors (JBD), and short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft (STOVL) during hover. Typically, on an aircraft carrier deck, the impingement of the jet blast on the deflector generates impingement tones, and structural vibrations, not only on the JBD but also on the ship deck. Therefore, apart from direct transmission of jet noise to the gallery level, there is a component of noise transmitted due to the impingement of the jet on the JBD. The objectives of this work are to study the pressure spectra (i) on a flat plate, and separately on a cone due to axisymmetric impingement of a supersonic underexpanded cold jet issuing from a convergent-divergent nozzle and (ii) on a plane jet impinging on a finite plate and an adjoining ground plane due to the impingement of a planar jet on the plate. The characteristics of the surface pressure fluctuations are numerically investiga ted using WIND-US 2.0. The time-dependent, compressible Euler equations for perfect gas are employed for the present computations. The impingement distance between the jet nozzle and the deflector plate, and the plate inclination with respect to the incident jet are varied. The impingement zone stagnation bubble and a high-speed radial jet with several embedded structures (shocklets) were identified on the perpendicular plate. Flows involving cones reveal the presence of detached cone shocks, enclosing a recirculation zone. The location and magnitude of the peak pressure on the cone surface are a strong function of the cone apex angle. For the two-dimensional jet impingement on angled plate the peak value of pressure occurs at normal jet impingement. The pressure at the intersection point of the plate and the ground plane is sometimes higher than the peak pressure on the plate. Beyond this point there is a sharp decrease in pressure. As the flow accelerates, an oblique shock is, Beyond this point there is a sharp decrease in pressure. As the flow accelerates, an oblique shock is sometimes formed in this grazing flow region. A recirculation region at the lower lip of the nozzle was observed for all the separation distances and plate inclinations.

The motivation behind this project is to study and implement the concept of System of Systems in the generation of a RF-based communication and control complex system. The goal of this project is to develop a multi-level integrated and complete system in which the vehicles that belong to a same network can become aware of their location, communicate with nearby vehicles (sometimes with no visible line of sight), be notified of the presence of different objects located in their immediate vicinity (obstacles, such as abundant vehicles), and generate a two dimensional representation of the vehicles’ location for a remote user. In addition, this system will be able to transmit back messages from the remote user to a specific or to all local vehicles. The end result is a demonstration of a complex, functional, and robust system built and tested for other projects to use and learn from.

For instance, the swimming mechanics of weakly electric black ghost knife sh (Apteronotus albifrons) is of great interest to study because of their high swimming e ciency at low speeds and extraordinary agility such as rapid reversal swimming, hovering in presence of water disturbance, rolling and vertical swimming. In this thesis work, to facilitate our understanding on the exible undulatory ribbon n propulsion, we have four research motivations. The rst objective is to study how the use of exible rays and di erent n morphology can in uence the propulsive performance of ribbon- n propulsion. It is possible that natural swimmers using this locomotion method could take advantage of passive n motion based on the coupling of uid-structure interaction and the elasto-mechanical responses of the undulating n. Therefore, the second objective is to understand how an under-actuated undulating n can take advantage of natural dynamics of the uid-structure interaction for the propulsive force generation. In addition to the impressive propulsive performance of the undulatory n propulsion, the exceptional maneuverability of knife sh is also a key motivation that drives this thesis work. Thus, we dedicate to investigate how traveling wave shapes and actuation parameters (frequency, wavelength) can manipulate the maneuvering behaviors of a swimmer propelled by an undulating ribbon n. Lastly, we aim to uncover the e ect of varying traveling wave amplitudes and pectoral ns on its maneuvering performances. Two robotic devices were developed to study the propulsive performance of both fullyactuated and under-actuated ribbon n propulsion and investigate the maneuver control of a free-swimming underwater robot propelled by an undulatory n. For the rst research aim, we study the e ect of exible rays and di erent n morphology on the propulsive performance of ribbon- n propulsion. A physical model composed of fteen rays interconnected with an elastic membrane was used to test four di erent ray exural sti ness and four aspect ratios. Our results show that exible rays can improve the propulsive e ciency compared to a rigid counterpart. In addition, the morphology of the ribbon n a ects its propulsive performance as well, and there could exist an optimal n morphology. To understand how an underactuated undulating n can modify its active and passive n motion to e ectively control the hydrodynamic force and propulsive e ciency. We did a series of experiments using the same robotic n model but with some structural modi cations and we measured n kinematics, net surge force and power consumption. We nd that the under-actuated n can keep the equivalent propulsive e ciency as the fully-actuated counterpart within our experimental parameter range. Moreover, our results demonstrate that the thrust force and power consumption of an under-actuated n follow the same scaling laws as the fully-actuated n. To conduct the free-swimming maneuver study, we developed a self-contained, free-swimming robot propelled by an undulatory n, which is able to perform the following maneuvers: forward, reversed swimming and hovering motion. We also performed V3V PIV experiments to capture the ow structures generated by the robotic device. Our results show that the robot can reach higher swimming e ciency at low frequencies. As the number of traveling waves increases, the robot swims more stably in roll, pitch and yaw motions. For cases with varying wave amplitudes, traveling wave with incremental wave amplitude can achieve free-swimming velocity higher than that of decremental wave amplitude. However, the latter case can generate higher pitch angles. For the robot with slightly negative-pitched pectoral ns, it can perform slow diving maneuvers. These ndings demonstrate that we can take advantage of the undulating ribbon n propulsion to achieve high maneuverability for the future underwater vehicles in complex environment.
