Show moreThis mixed methods study explored and measured the multi-dimensional construct of global-mindedness as it applies to the study abroad professional and defines the term study abroad professional. Hett’s (1993) Global-Mindedness Scale and the five dimensions of responsibility, cultural pluralism, efficacy, globalcentrism, and interconnectedness was utilized to determine the global-mindedness of study abroad professionals. Additionally, open and closed-ended questions were used to identify similarities across the study abroad professionals and to help define and give meaning to the term study abroad professional. Research findings lead to the identification of four themes. Theme one focused on characteristics that lend themselves to defining the term study abroad professionals. Theme two focused on the individual characteristics and their association with Hett’s five dimensions of global-mindedness. Qualitative data were used to support the various research questions whose answers became part of the working definition for a study abroad professional. Theme three focused on study abroad. And, theme four focused on evolving job announcements. International education, specifically study abroad, has become a specialized and recognized profession. What has emerged are specific academic requirements, professional training, and various professional and personal experiences being a requirement for entry into the field. Individuals entering the study abroad profession need to have an advanced degree, most likely in education or international/global studies (although other majors are acceptable), they will have studied, interned, volunteered, worked, or lived abroad, they will have good communication skills, be open-minded, organized, flexible, patient, empathetic, culturally sensitive, interculturally competent, and will have previous experience in the field. These findings have led to the definition of a study abroad professional. a study abroad professional is a globally-minded administrator or advisor with international and professional experiences, educational credentials, and personal traits that help them to relate to, communicate with, and support students, faculty, and staff, while fostering a safe study abroad environment that meets the needs of the institution and diverse student populations.

Show moreModern societies are increasingly becoming more culturally diverse. In theories of multiculturalism and governance two approaches to government involvement in managing the dynamics of multicultural interactions prevail, majoritarian and consociational models of democracy. The discursive model of democracy is offered in this study as an alternative model that allows for citizen engagement in public deliberations of conflicting issues. I argue that government has an active role in facilitating multicultural discourses in communities. In facilitation of multicultural discourses I consider public recognition of cultural differences as one important element for citizen inclusion in public deliberations. The practices of three county governments in South Florida in facilitation of multicultural discourse are investigated and comparatively examined. The individual cases are investigated and compared on nine dimensions of multicultural discourse, into three broader categories: forms of discourses, components of discourses, and implications of discourses. The comparative examination shows that government facilitation of multicultural discourse assists in resolution of multicultural conflicts in communities and in building awareness and tolerance of cultural specificities of others. It also provides for larger inclusion of socially marginalized cultural groups in policy processes. The extent of the involvement of county governments in South Florida in facilitation of multicultural discourses is often influenced by and contingent on the commitment and receptivity of legislators.

Born in Sri Lanka during the emergence of one the world's longest lasting civil wars, I never recognized my love and concern for the Island and its ancient history and culture until I traveled to America to pursue a higher education. Ever since, I have constantly found myself in situations where I am regarded as the 'other' or the 'outsider' ; I seem to not fit in completely in this country as well as in my own. In the US I am considered 'eastern' or 'exotic', whereas in my own country, I am considered 'westernized', no longer looked at as a typical Sri Lankan woman. This thesis examines and explores marginalization, orientalism, deconstruction theories, semiotic studies, dialect as well as attire, in the specific context of Graphic Design.

A progressive discourse on race is impeded by several factors: debates on the reality or unreality of the term race itself; discussions of ethnicity that tend to marginalize a discussion of race; the view by majority members of society that race is a topic for discussion principally by minorities; and the lack of models for non-confrontational public conversations on the subject. Show moreA progressive discourse on race is impeded by several factors: debates on the reality or unreality of the term race itself; discussions of ethnicity that tend to marginalize a discussion of race; the view by majority members of society that race is a topic for discussion principally by minorities; and the lack of models for non-confrontational public conversations on the subject. In the process, a discussion of racial change rarely enters the discourse beyond brief responses in opinion polls. This study proposed the Race and Change Dialogue Model to facilitate the exploration of how race operates in society on an interpersonal level in everyday lives of people across cultures and how changes in racial attitudes occur over time. Theories of race and ethnicity, language, effective communication strategies, and social change provided a starting point, but a "re-languaging" approach was used to advance the innovative nature of this work. In audiorecorded oral histories for public dissemination and interviews in a documentary series on public television, cross-cultural narrators were provided with a safe rhetorical space to tell their stories and to be heard, and a framework of "racenicity" allowed for the discussion of the intersectionality of race, ethnicity, class, and culture as fused aspects of the same issue. An environment was created that enhanced effective communication of a difficult subject. Despite the challenges that arose in the patterns of talk about racial change, the door has been opened to bring change into the dialogue in a more prominent way that moves the discourse on differences in more productive directions. An alternate model for public discussions on race as "racenicity" was created that has the potential to build coalition in the U.S. and has implications for other societies as well.

However, as the government conducted raids looking for illegal immigrants, my mother became more aware of her place as a Mexican woman living in the Midwest. She wondered whether people...

However, as the government conducted raids looking for illegal immigrants, my mother became more aware of her place as a Mexican woman living in the Midwest. She wondered whether people would assume she was illegal because of her accent and appearance. Our discussions prompted me to think about of my place in the story, and about my lack of connection with the Hispanic culture. I set out to interview migrants living in South Florida, and to document my and my mother's experience with immigration and assimilation.

Show moreMulticultural education has been mandated in the state of Florida as part of State Mandate 1003.42. In order for this mandate to be implemented, it is necessary for teachers to know what effective multicultural education is and how it is to be implemented. This study was designed to find out what English teachers know about the state mandate and multicultural education and how they use multicultural education in their classrooms. High school English teachers in one South Florida school district participated in an online survey, and 11 of those respondents also participated in a follow-up personal interview. According to multiple scholars, there are three categories for multicultural education: Recognition, Transformation, and Action, with Recognition serving to recognize and respect other cultures without any change to the mainstream curriculum and instruction, Transformation serving to transform the curriculum and instruction to reflect students and their various cultures while introducing them to others and meeting the various instructional needs of the students, and Action motivating students to take action to bring about social justice. Overall, high school English teachers’ understanding of effective multicultural education is on the Transformation level. The survey found that high school English teachers use multicultural education on the Action level; however, the follow-up interviews did not support that finding. Also based on the interviews, teachers are willing and eager to learn more and would like the district to implement their suggestions to help with their learning.
