Getting your point across effectively can be the difference between earning your desired outcomes or failing to receive desired results from individuals or the corporate setting. Business Communication for Success is a product of an Open Education Resource initiative at Florida Atlantic University. Adaptation author, Dr. George Grunfeld, received support from the Florida Atlantic University Library and Center for eLearning to create this Open Education Resource. This Business Communication for Success eText is an adaptation of a previously adapted Business Communication for Success eText that was published through the University of Minnesota. The adapted Florida Atlantic University 2019 edition explains the key aspects of both verbal and nonverbal communication, how to listen to and understand others, and how to make the best possible first impression on the people you encounter in and around business opportunities. Business Communication for Success has been enhanced with dynamic instructional videos allowing readers to learn and review at their own pace.

This is both a challenge to the previous communist ideology which promoted an asexual type of femininity, and the product of a hegemonically masculine culture revived by the reality of the newly born capitalist Romanian society. By means of a feminist semiotic analysis, the study concentrates on visual and textual discourses of femininity in two popular Romanian women's magazines. It concludes that Romanian women's publications during transition advance a concept of femininity constructed through a passivity/power complementariness. On the one hand, constructed images of femininity, according to Western norms, replicate a patriarchal system of values; on the other hand, agency becomes available to women by their own control over their embodied subjectivity, prompted by anxieties accumulated and repressed during the years of communism.

It will show a world view dominated by fear of failure and by strong intragroup competition. To the extent this ideology becomes accepted as common sense, graduates come into the workforce alienated from their fellow workers, identifying with an elite of which they are not a part. Using Fredric Jameson's methodology, we can analyze the narrative framework and content of one aspect of this training, the business communication course. Although part of an educational system that prides itself on intellectual independence, it is actually an adjunct of contemporary capitalism and its ideological structure.

Show moreThis thesis provides an overview of immersive journalism (IJ), focusing on its theoretical and conceptual framework, objectives, ethical concerns, and evolving landscape. IJ is defined as the production of news in a form in which people can gain first-person experiences of the events or situation described in news stories through the use of immersive technologies, including virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality. While the initial objective of IJ was to enhance empathy and transport users to distant places, recent scholars note the limitations and challenges of this approach. Therefore, media outlets are shifting from empathy-based journalism to other objectives. The thesis also discusses the ethical concerns that come with such a degree of immersion and reviews principles of traditional journalistic forms such as objectivity and accuracy in the context of IJ. The last section explores the process of creating a 360-degree project and the required skill set and production process. Overall, the thesis provides insights into the evolving landscape of IJ and its potential to reshape journalism.

The 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) committee is currently working on a standard for mobile broadcast and multicast services (MBMS). MBMS is expected to enable easier deployment of video and multimedia services on 3G networks. We present an overview of the standard including the proposed architecture and requirements focusing on radio aspects. We discuss the issue of video error resilience in such services that is critical to maintain consistent quality for terminals. The error resilience techniques currently used in video streamingservices are not suitable for MBMS services. We analyze the error resilience techniques that are applicable within the context of MBMS standard and present our early research in this area.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to show support that certain cultural characteristics of an individual could be identified based on the region where that individual was born and raised. These cultural characteristics were identified and defined, and strategies on understanding these cultural characteristics were reviewed. This study revealed that by focusing on this understanding, trust can be established quickly and it is this trust that is the basis of building any type of relationship. Several different macrocultural systems were examined in this study. These included the United States, Asia, Central and South America, India, the Middle East, and the European Union cultures. These are the largest and the fastest growing regions of the world as well as the locations where most of the newly established business relationships are being formed., The study examined each macrocultural system individually by giving some background information on the culture and reasons for their recent explosive economic growth. Upon review of this study, any individual should be able to approach others with the realization that, with some degree of confidence, cultural characteristics of the individual being pursued can be predetermined based on a number of factors. The ability to recognize these factors facilitates a cultural competency that includes the skills and qualities that enable successful outcomes to happen in business contexts where different cultures are interacting. This predetermination will provide a type of blueprint to an individual's thoughts, tendencies, and even buying patterns., These strategies will reveal ways of sidestepping everyone's natural tendency to say "no." By providing this insight into predisposed behavior patterns, most individuals will tend to lower their natural defense barriers and a smooth and effective conversation will follow. Personality types are recognized during or after a conversation, but cultural characteristics can be determined prior to the start of any conversation. Oftentimes, it is too late to try and figure out a personality type to adjust your sales approach or strategy in the middle of a conversation. There are ways to recognize cultural characteristics and incorporate certain strategies simply by knowing where a prospect was born and raised, as well as knowing their ethnicity.

Show moreA test system was designed to determine the performance a QPSK satellite burst modem when using the Ka band link of the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite. Interface circuitry, largely based on the 22V10 programmable logic device, was designed to allow the modem to be controlled by a personal computer. Communication between the interface and the computer was accomplished through the computer's parallel port. TDMA frame timing was automatically controlled by the interface. A C language program provided operator control of the interface itself. Tests using this system showed that a severe night-time fading problem is experienced at the FAU receiver site. Very low error rates were recorded by this system in a loop-back transmission at the NASA satellite control terminal.

Show moreIn this dissertation, new semi-analytical expressions for the diversity bit error rate performance of asynchronous direct sequence-code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems in multipath fading channels are derived. Also, the PN acquisition time of a DS system with offset frequency periods greater than the code period in a AWGN channel is measured via laboratory experiments. In Part I we consider DS-CDMA systems operating in a cellular environment with multipath reception. Multipath propagation is exploited through the use of RAKE receivers. Coherent, differentially coherent and noncoherent binary demodulation schemes are considered. The multiple access interference is modeled as AWGN, conditioned on the fading statistics of the received signal. The mobile radio channel introduces selective fading, and is modeled as a tapped delay line. The amplitude of each resolvable path is statistically described by the Nakagami distribution, which is a general solution to the random vector problem that causes rapid fading. However, we assume independent but nonidentical fading along the RAKE branches. Therefore our analysis supports unequal mean powers and different amount of fading in the multipath components combined by the receiver. Also, the results can be easily extended to account for diversity from multiple antennas or coding in the generalized Nakagami multipath fading environment. In Part II we consider a land mobile satellite channel. First, a laboratory experiment is setup to evaluate the PN acquisition performance of a digital IF receiver in a AWGN channel with large Doppler offset. The digital conversion receiver uses the inherent aliasing property of sampling to realize the baseband conversion using a single analog-to-digital converter. Thereafter, digital signal processing on the I and Q samples enable for design trade-offs in the acquisition of the PN code with Doppler periods greater than the code period. Two code phase selection criterions, namely the maximum criterion and the threshold crossing criterion, are investigated and their acquisition time is measured for different frequency offsets and input IF signal to noise ratios. We also derive semi-analytical expressions for the BER performance of coherent and differentially coherent systems operating in a mobile satellite channel. In this case the channel is modeled as a multipath nonselective channel, but diversity gain can still be obtained through path diversity. This is the scenario when a signal is transmitted to all satellites in view and the received replicas are independently demodulated and combined at the receiver. Our analysis extends previous results to the case of unequal mean powers and Rice factors in the combined signals; a valid assumption if we consider that the satellites are in view at different elevation angles. Furthermore, the effect of imperfect power control in such mobile satellite DS-CDMA systems is also considered.

The performance analyses is done in terms of throughput and mean extra delay, which are calculated analytically and are compared with the results generated from the simulations. As the demand for higher data rates increases over the wireless channels, this thesis studies the effect of the random errors over the different types of RLP frame formats and also the performance of the NAK based ARQ mechanism used in these conditions. The simulation provides with the overall characteristics of the throughput and the mean extra delay in terms of realistic environment parameters like Eb/No and probability of packet error (Pe), based on the channel conditions.

Show moreNine journal articles were analyzed in order to understand gendered composition and what makes writing an article feminine and what makes it masculine. The journals reviewed were Communication Monographs, Communication Theory, Critical Studies in Mass Communication, Human Communication Research, Quarterly Journal of Speech, and Women Studies in Communication. Categories were compiled to include the characteristics of a feminine style in feminist research, and a masculine style in traditional research. This analysis takes a rhetorical approach in order to address a more gender diverse perspective in research. As a result of many published articles reflecting a theme of a "dominant masculinist paradigm" in the publication process, this study examines some of the reasons why feminist scholarship in communication struggles for acceptance.

Show moreIndexed Resource Auction Multiple Access (I-RAMA), a new medium access protocol for wireless cellular networks based on Resource Auction Multiple Access (RAMA) is presented. I-RAMA relies in variable length resource auctions, whose length depends on the time it takes the Base Station to uniquely identify the Mobile Station. This identification is done by using dynamic Base Station information about the users present in the cell at any moment. I-RAMA effectively reduces the amount of time spent in the resource auctions without introducing contention or excessive complexity at the Base Station. The effects of introducing data users in the system are investigated using a simulation, and it is shown that I-RAMA guarantees Quality of Service for isochronous users while maintaining a bounded delay for data users at much higher loads than RAMA.
