- COLONIZATION, INSTITUTIONS, AND CROSS-BORDER ACQUISITION DECISIONS OF EMERGING MARKET MULTINATIONAL ENTERPRISES.

This research focuses on cross-border acquisitions of emerging market multinationals (EM MNEs). Opposing theoretical perspectives of colonial ties (i.e., country ties between the acquiring and target firm countries, with the former being a colonized country and the latter being a colonizer country) are argued as predictors of EM MNE equity participation. Colonial tie is discussed as a source of legitimacy that can lower legitimacy threats (i.e., the likelihood of being deemed as illegitimate)...

Opposing theoretical perspectives of colonial ties (i.e., country ties between the acquiring and target firm countries, with the former being a colonized country and the latter being a colonizer country) are argued as predictors of EM MNE equity participation. Colonial tie is discussed as a source of legitimacy that can lower legitimacy threats (i.e., the likelihood of being deemed as illegitimate) via promoting similarities in informal institutions of the home and host countries. On the other hand, colonial tie is argued to be a historical event that can increase legitimacy threats due to perceived superiority of the colonizer. Chapter 1 contains an overview of and rationale for the study. Chapters 2-4 cover the literature review, theoretical development, contributions, and avenues for future research. This research fills the gap in literature by introducing colonization as a historical perspective with which to understand equity participation decisions.

Recently Dr. Narayanan's laboratory, utilizing bioinformatics approaches, identified a novel gene which may play a role in colon cancer. This gene in view of its expression specificity was termed Colon Carcinoma Related Gene (CCRG). The CCRG belongs to a novel class of secreted molecules with a unique cysteine rich motif. Show moreRecently Dr. The function of CCRG however, remains unknown. The basis of this project revolved around establishing the putative function (functional genomics) of CCRG. The rationale for the project was to test a hypothesis that CCRG may offer a growth advantage to cancer cells. The availability of diverse tumor-derived cell lines, which were CCRG negative offered a possibility to study the consequence of enforced expression of CCRG. A breast carcinoma cell line was transfected with an exogenous CCRG expression vector and the stable clones were characterized. The stable transfectants of CCRG showed enhanced growth and a partial abrogation of serum growth factor(s) requirement. These results provide a framework for future experiments to further elucidate the function of CCRG.

This study focused on whether wetland vegetation could become re-established on a newly restored floodplain of the Kissimmee River if seasonal floodplain inundation were re-established. The wetland was re-created by back-filling a section of the Kissimmee Canal and diverting water flow into remnant river meanders. Seasonal flooding did occur during the study period. Show moreThis study focused on whether wetland vegetation could become re-established on a newly restored floodplain of the Kissimmee River if seasonal floodplain inundation were re-established. The wetland was re-created by back-filling a section of the Kissimmee Canal and diverting water flow into remnant river meanders. Seasonal flooding did occur during the study period. There were no other interventions to promote wetland plant growth. Ten vegetation quadrats were stratified between the back-filled canal and adjacent floodplain. These quadrats were monitored for 11 months. Of the 68 plant species recorded, 72% were obligate, facultative wetland or aquatic species. Diversity, richness, and percent cover of wetland plants increased with time. Coverage of broadleaf marsh habitat increased with increasing water depths. Vegetation at the end of the study period was similar to pre-channelized estimates. Restoration of hydrologic fluctuations appears sufficient to re-establish wetland habitat in this area of the Kissimmee River basin.
