On the other hand, colonial tie is argued to be a historical event that can increase legitimacy threats due to perceived superiority of the colonizer. Chapter 1 contains an overview of and rationale for the study. Chapters 2-4 cover the literature review, theoretical development, contributions, and avenues for future research. This research fills the gap in literature by introducing colonization as a historical perspective with which to understand equity participation decisions.

Recent advancements in artificial intelligence, especially machine learning, has lent researchers the powers to use data to model and predict business success. Show moreThe purpose of this study is to develop and empirically test theories on wealth effects surrounding divestiture of foreign and domestic subsidiaries by U.S. firms. Two primary research questions are addressed: (1) What are the wealth effects associated with divestiture of foreign and domestic subsidiaries? (2) How do firm-specific and macroeconomic conditions affect these wealth effects? Various methodologies are used to empirically test theories and hypotheses. Two samples of divestitures that occurred between 1979 and 1991 are used. One sample consists of 111 divestitures of foreign subsidiaries by U.S. firms, and the other sample consists of 148 divestitures of domestic subsidiaries by U.S. firms. The results of this study are relevant to corporate managers, investors, security analysts, and other researchers. Foreign and domestic divestitures elicit positive short-run valuation effects of about 1 and 2 percent respectively. In the long run, firms that divest foreign subsidiaries increase in value on average by about 15 percent over a 5 year post-divestiture period. Conversely, firms that divest domestic subsidiaries decrease in value on average by about 11 percent over the 5 years that follow divestiture. No significant change in firm risk is associated with foreign or domestic divestitures. Relations between short-run and long-run valuation effects in the sample of domestic divestitures are positive and significant for periods of up to 4 years after divestiture, but for foreign divestitures, such relations are not significant. This suggests that the market adjusts more slowly but seems to more accurately predict the long run impact of domestic divestitures. Large divestitures elicit large valuation effects. Financially strong firms divesting foreign subsidiaries experience less favorable valuation effects. Greater valuation effects result from divestiture of unrelated subsidiaries. Strategic divestitures elicit positive valuation effects in the short run but little unique effect in the long run. Domestic divestitures that occur because of liquidity problems elicit positive valuation effects. Larger valuation effects are associated with divestiture of foreign subsidiaries in industrial countries than in less developed countries. A strong U.S. dollar seems to have a positive influence on short-run valuation effects but no material influence on long-run valuation effects associated with foreign divestiture.

Exchange rate exposure is defined as the impact of unanticipated changes in exchange rates on stock prices. The motivation for the study lies in a fundamental discrepancy between academic research and practice: Academic research has shown that exchange-rate exposure is not priced in capital markets, but the use of financial hedging instruments designed to protect firms from unanticipated changes in exchange rates is widespread. This leads to the conclusion that exchange rate exposure is priced in equity markets and is a function of firm specific factors. This dissertation segregated firms based on various factors that might affect its exchange rate exposure. They are: A firms foreign sales characteristics, the export/import characteristics of the industry to which it belongs, the competitive structure of the firms industry, its business organization and its degree of concentration in sales. The results indicate that firms that operate in the service sector of the economy are more exposed to exchange rate risk than those that operate in the manufacturing sector. On the other hand, the degree of competition among firms in an industry does not have an impact on exchange rate exposure. The results indicate that a firms degree of concentration in foreign sales has an impact on its exchange rate exposure. These results imply that restructuring operations can reduce a firms exchange rate risk. When taken together, the results of the dissertation indicate that exchange rate is exposure is priced in capital markets and is a function of firm specific factors. These results have implications for corporate investors and managers. Corporate investors can choose portfolios that will limit their exchange rate exposure. Corporate managers can make hedging decisions for the firm based on the degree of exposure the firm faces which is a function of who it is and what it does.

One group of scholars recommends standardized global marketing strategies based on the premise that technological advances in telecommunication, transportation, and media are leading to similarities in customer preferences across the world. Other researchers recommend multi-domestic strategies on the premise that consumer heterogeneity continues to increase even within countries. Firms marketing products in global markets appear to adopt global marketing strategies, multi-domestic strategies, and various intermediate strategies that encompass different degrees of standardization. This research develops a theoretical framework to examine the factors that influence marketing strategies in global markets. Transaction cost analysis constructs are used to determine whether to standardize or customize marketing strategy. The basis for adopting different levels of standardization on marketing program and process variables is empirically investigated. A multinomial logit model is used to estimate the likelihood of adopting different degrees of standardization with data from American multinational corporations on 161 products marketed in different global markets. The results indicate that higher levels of asset specificity associated with patented technical knowledge favor physical attribute standardization in global markets. Volatile political environments, high degrees of ownership in affiliates, and global competitors' standardized marketing strategies encourage firms to tailor physical attributes. Brand names are standardized if the economic uncertainty is lower in foreign markets. Cultural dissimilarities between home and host countries hinder marketing control systems standardization. Operating experience in foreign countries and the need for technical service and customer interactions support standardization of marketing control systems. The need for specialized local market knowledge encourages the adoption of country-specific marketing research methods. Standardized pricing strategies are preferred over flexible country-specific strategies in volatile political environments.

These costs arise principally from the separation of ownership and control interests in the firm. While it is widely believed that multinational corporations (MNCs) with substantial foreign market exposure face higher agency costs than less-exposed MNCs or domestic firms, empirical evidence in support of this contention is largely absent from the literature. This dissertation uses capital market data to empirically examine the theory that multinational corporations with substantial exposure to foreign markets incur greater agency costs than less-exposed MNCs or domestic corporations. Using the agency cost perspective of common shareholders, this study tests for evidence of a differential agency cost effect for MNCs by examining the market reaction to a series of events that should tend to signal a change in the level of agency costs for all firms. If MNCs with significant foreign market exposure experience higher agency costs than less-exposed MNCs or domestic corporations, then events that tend to reduce (increase) agency costs in all firms should have greater positive (negative) wealth effects for highly exposed MNCs. An event-study methodology is used to measure the abnormal returns associated with the announcements of four separate events: (1) debt offerings; (2) equity offerings; (3) organizational restructurings; and (4) takeover defenses. The observed abnormal returns are then examined cross-sectionally to test whether various firm-specific factors (primarily degree of foreign market exposure) are influential in explaining the pattern of returns. When taken together, the results of the four event-studies and their associated cross-sectional analyses support the main hypothesis of this dissertation that multinational corporations with substantial foreign market exposure experience greater levels of agency costs than less-exposed MNCs or domestic corporations. The strength of these findings depends upon the extent to which the underlying events represent effective proxies for changes in agency costs across firms.

Consequently, shareholders, debtholders, and management closely monitor exposure. This dissertation investigates characteristics that explain the differential exposure of U.S.-based multinational corporations (MNCs) and examines conditions that influence exposure to shift over time. Operating characteristics that represent economic and accounting exposure are empirically studied to determine their impact on the overall exposure of MNCs. First, the results show that MNCs with imbalances in foreign currency inflows and outflows are more sensitive to exchange rate changes. A simple measure of European involvement is not adequate to assess the level of exposure. Second, it is found that the degree of export sales is a significant determinant of exposure. Third, there is strong support that accounting exposure is relevant. The translation effect on earnings is found to be significantly related to overall exposure. It is feasible that the dynamic nature of the international marketplace and MNC operations influence exposure to shift over time. First, the European Community Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) crisis is studied. The ERM crisis provides an opportunity to assess the effects on exposure when a tightly-controlled exchange rate regime becomes more relaxed. Using portfolio returns, U.S.-based MNCs operating in Europe experienced a positive shift in exposure, indicating returns are positively related to a strengthening dollar, following the onset of the ERM crisis. The strength of the dollar is another condition examined. Due to potential asymmetric responses, exposure may shift as the strength of the dollar changes. The asymmetric hedging hypothesis is not strongly supported while there is some support for the asymmetric competitive response hypothesis. The effects of repositioning on exposure are also studied. This analysis differs from the previous analyses of shifts in exposure since repositioning activities are predominantly under management's control. There is some evidence that exposure is a variable that continually changes as repositioning occurs. A subset of MNCs with returns that are negatively affected by a strong dollar displays time-varying exposure due to changes in their imbalance of foreign currency inflows and outflows.

According to familybusiness.com, 62% of the US workforce is employed by family businesses. Yet, we do not know much about how family firms respond to theft and fraud committed within their firms or the factors that influence their responses. The goal of this dissertation is to better understand a family firm owner’s decision to report theft and fraud committed by family and non-family employees, and whether kinship strength and race/ethnicity have any discernable effects on these reporting intentions. To achieve that goal, this study integrates insights from family firm, sociology, and psychology literatures. It presents a conceptual model and three sets of hypotheses that were tested in this empirical study. The results extend previous literature by providing support that kinship not only influences family employee theft intentions, but family owner reporting intentions as well. In addition, egalitarianism, or race avoidance, was shown to interact with kinship to influence owner reporting intentions.

Show moreThe purpose of the current manuscript was to examine acquirer and market behavior surrounding a sample of international mergers and acquisitions. The first essay examined the existence of a private company discount and its connections to liquidity. It found that unlisted targets sell for less than their public counterparts, confirming earlier findings. The examination of a connection between the discount and liquidity mostly contradicted earlier studies (Officer 2007), depending on which subsample was selected. The second essay examined the existence of a target price runup preceding acquisitions announcements, existence of a substitution effect between runup and premium, and whether investor protection influenced the two. It confirmed the earlier findings of a significant runup preceding acquisition announcements, with the runup being more pronounced in those targets from weaker investor protection countries. Contrary to Schwert (1996), the study found a significant substitution effect between runup and premium, with the effect stronger if the acquirers are from countries with weak investor protection. The third essay examined acquirer stock price reaction to the three different components of the offer price: target's stand-alone valuation, pre-announcement runup and the offer premium. Each component was found to have an overall insignificant effect on the acquirer stock price in the overall sample. When the targets were from the countries with the weakest investor protection, the study found that the reaction to both the runup and stand-alone target valuation depend on both target and acquirer country investor protection. The study also found that when the targets were from the countries with the weakest investor protection, and only from those countries, acquirer stock price reacted negatively to any individual component of the offer price being higher., Overall, the three studies confirm that behavior of both acquirer management and their stock markets i affected by the variance in investor protection among countries.

Show moreProfessional service entrepreneurs (PSEs) paradoxically practice their profession in highly institutionalized contexts which require significant socialization, while at the same time enacting their role as an entrepreneur. Some activities consistent with entrepreneurship may be unnecessary for—and possibly even contradictory with— activities consistent with professional roles. In this dissertation, I addressed the questions of how two highly central role identities (professional and entrepreneurial) related to entrepreneurial orientation (EO) in professional service practices, and how EO influences performance in the context of professional practices. Using a sample of 139 physicians, I examined the relationships between the role identity centrality of two primary roles (professional and entrepreneurial) that PSEs occupy, the EO of their firms, and firm performance. This study utilized a mixed methods design, consisting of both a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews administered to a sample of professionals who own professional practice firms in the southeastern region of Florida. Findings suggest a significant and positive relationship between entrepreneurial role identity centrality and entrepreneurial orientation and a marginally significant and negative moderation of entrepreneurial role identity centrality upon the relationship between professional role identity centrality and EO. A qualitative study served to elaborate on the findings of the quantitative study, and revealed the potential of very unique understandings of the intersection of entrepreneurship and professional practice across a selection of physicians.

Show moreAt the dawn of a new presidential election, we are reminded that what separates the United States from the rest of the world are the immigrants who came here in the pursuit of the American Dream. These immigrants do not just come to the United States as workers, but also as consumers and entrepreneurs who contribute to the American economy, and use the profits created by their successful entrepreneurship(s) in a way that they become catalysts of change. None of the studies have managed to track the qualities and perceptions of these entrepreneurial immigrants turned philanthropists since the 1940’s. By focusing on their life experiences using an instrumental case study approach, we start to form the profile of the modern day immigrant entrepreneur and philanthropist by analyzing them through five lenses: immigration, adult education, entrepreneurship, leadership, and philanthropy. Using these five lenses, we can better understand the optative aspects of entrepreneurial immigrantship as a part of social impact on Florida’s Gold Coast. Their core family values of tithing and lending a helping hand to those in need transfer into social activism in terms of donations of wealth and donations of time. Although they do not consider themselves leaders in the communities they live and work in, the research findings are quite the opposite. They are socially involved through memberships and leadership positions on local, national, and international non- profit boards, they spearhead major fundraising events and initiatives, and they establish private or corporate foundations and even support candidates seeking political office, whether here or abroad. In essence, they became philanthropists and community activists, who by virtue of immigrating and opening their businesses here add value to Florida’s Gold Coast.

Determinants of entrepreneurship have been studied at individual, regional and national levels. Even though research indicates that variation in the levels of entrepreneurship across regions within nations is greater than the national differences and that these differences persist over time (Bosma & Schutjen 2009, 2011; Fritsch & Mueller 2006; Sternberg 2004; Tamásy 2006), we still do not know the full range of regional level determinants of entrepreneurship. I drew from Wennekers’ (2006) framework and link two lines of research (international entrepreneurship and international management) to examine the effects of institutional, economic, technological and cultural contexts on entrepreneurship across within-country regions developed ten hypotheses regarding the relationship of institutional, economic, technological and cultural context to entrepreneurship. I tested these hypotheses within Europe using the regional classification scheme developed by the European Union. Data for the variables came from the European Values Survey, European Social Survey, Eurostat, World Bank, International Social Security Association, Eurobarometer and the Global Competitiveness Report. To test the hypothesized relationships, I use Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM 6.0.) The results indicate that there is a positive relationship between institutional trust, Long Term Orientation and entrepreneurship levels across regions. In conclusion, examination of region-level predictors of entrepreneurship must include different measures of entrepreneurship to provide more accurate understanding and to inform policy makers.

Show moreMy objective in this dissertation was to understand the processes leading to incompletion of the high profile cross-border deals. A conceptual framework was developed which suggests that announcement of a cross-border merger and acquisition (M&A) deal starts a string of institutional processes that leads to incompletion of the bid. I proposed that less powerful host country actors threatened by the MNC’s bid proposal politicize the transaction turning the deal into a transgression. These actors publicize this transgression, initiating a scandal, to gather support of multiple audiences in their attempts to thwart the threat that the MNC poses. Thanks to their efforts in appealing to audiences and publicization of the deal as a transgression, these actors mobilize audiences who reveal hostile reaction against the MNC and the proposed bid. Such mobilization and hostile reaction, in turn, lead to proposed bid’s incompletion. Qualitative analysis results based on a sample of seven high profile cross-border transactions provided support for the conceptualized processes, namely politicization, scandal, mobilization and hostile reaction, while indicating a different order of process progression compared to the linear one conceptualized. I found that in all cases the process of scandal subsumed the other processes that kept scandal alive. In turn, scandal fed these processes giving more leverage to the mobilization efforts and/or increasing the hostility of the actors opposing the deal. The findings revealed that these processes happened simultaneously and that in cases where mobilization did not emerge, hostile reaction substituted for the lack of mobilization. Additionally, analysis showed that not only less powerful actors but also powerful actors, elites, sought to initiate a scandal when the host country political, legal or bureaucratic processes did not work for them in thwarting the deal. This dissertation by examining social construction, power and politics within the host country institutional environment in the context of high profile cross-border deals, presented a framework that explained how and why the hostility leading to deal incompletion emerges in the host country. In so doing, this dissertation strengthens institutional theory, theory of scandal, social movements theory and elite theory as powerful perspectives in international strategic -management.

Show moreThe growth of global competition has established international segmentation as a key issue in developing, positioning and selling products throughout the world (Ter Hofstede, Steenkamp and Wedel 1999). Many international segmentation studies have used macro-level, secondary data to identify country clusters based on similarities in political, economic, geographic or cultural variables. As a result of extensive review, we identify three major gaps in the international country segmentation literature. First, no study so far has accounted for the influence of time. While researchers suggest that longitudinal analysis provides additional insight into whether situational characteristics of countries change over time (Cavusgil, Kiyak, and Yeniyurt 2004; Helsen, Jedidi, and DeSarbo 1993; Sethi 1971; Steenkamp and Hofstede 2002,), a major limitation of this body of work is that most studies address country-level segmentation at a single point in time. However, bases of segmentation are considered to be dynamic in nature (Hassan, Craft, and Kortam 2003) and global and country-specific changes in economic development are likely to result in variations in segment membership over time. We investigate the stability of factors and the stability of segments over time by performing cluster analysis at two points of time. Second, most studies use ad hoc variables without theoretical basis which may result in accidental generalizations. Instead of suggesting a proliferation of random variables, which are considered influential in the decision making process without any empirical or theoretical evidence, we propose a theoretical basis for country segmentation. We use institutional theory to distinguish between heterogeneous groups of countries. Finally, there is the issue of providing "one size fits all" solutions., In other words, existing models offer general results of country clusters meant to be useful for all firms regardless of the product they offer or the industry they belong to. Our model based on institutional theory is used to investigate whether the influence of the host-country environment changes depending on the product that is concerned.

Show moreThis dissertation analyzes how the reactions of repatriates and spouses/partners about their new lifestyle and compensation package upon repatriation relate to several repatriate turnover outcomes. U.S.-based multinational organizations often provide global assignees with an extensive benefit package, including such items as housing allowances, foreign-service premiums, tuition for international schools, and club memberships. Once the assignment is over, these additional benefits are necessarily terminated. Results of a qualitative analysis of 14 semi-structured interviews and a quantitative analysis of 37 U.S. repatriated executives and 34 spouses/partners of repatriated executives suggest that repatriate perceptions of distributive justice positively relate to all facets of pay satisfaction (i.e. pay level, pay raise, benefits, and pay structure and administration satisfaction), while procedural justice relates positively to pay structure and administration satisfaction. Overall pay satisfaction, in turn, positively relates to the intentions to increase one's investment in company-specific skills. Repatriate and spouse/partner attitudes about the changes in benefits they encounter upon repatriation are predicted by their children's satisfaction with their new lifestyle. Furthermore, some evidence suggests support for the proposition that overall pay satisfaction and benefit change satisfaction of repatriates and spouses/partners negatively relate to the actual turnover of repatriates. The implications drawn from this dissertation inform theories of social status, spillover, equity, and expatriate adjustment. Multinational organizations employing expatriates may additionally consider the practical implications useful when establishing compensation packages and repatriation programs for international assignees.

As we all know, web server logs contain potentially useful empirical data to improve web server performance. In this thesis, we discuss some topics related to the analysis of a website's server logs for enhancing server performance, which will benefit some applications in business. Markov chain models are used and allow us to dynamically model page sequences extracted from server logs. My experimental studies contain three major parts. First, I present a workload characterization study of the website used for my research. Second, Markov chain models are constructed for both page request and page-visiting sequence prediction. Finally, I carefully evaluate the constructed models using an independent test data set, which is from server logs on a different day. The research results demonstrate the effectiveness of Markov chain models for characterizing page-visiting sequences.

Show moreThis dissertation examined the roles of institutional distance and corporate social capital in the unique context of foreign acquisitions in the United States. A conceptual framework was developed which suggests that institutional distance has a dual impact on international acquisition performance. Institutional distance makes it more difficult for foreign acquirers to establish legitimacy in the United States, and therefore adversely affects acquisition success. Institutional distance also has a beneficial effect on acquisition performance to the extent to which it provides valuable opportunities for institutional arbitrage. Corporate social capital was discussed as a strategy to aid foreign MNCs in overcoming the detrimental, and leveraging the beneficial effects of institutional distance on these cross-border transactions. Analysis results based on a sample of 247 large-scale acquisitions in the US by publicly traded foreign acquirers that were made between 2000 and 2005 provided overall support for the hypothesized model. It was found that each of the three dimensions of institutional distance - regulatory, normative, and cultural distance- was negatively associated with the local media endorsement of foreign acquirers. Furthermore, regulatory distance was negatively associated with the investment ratings of foreign acquirers, and normative distance had a positive impact on the number of local lawsuits filed against these firms. Results from this study also showed that the existence of corporate social capital aided foreign acquirers in overcoming the negative effect of regulatory distance on both the firms' investment ratings and their local media endorsement. The findings further revealed that media endorsement of foreign acquirers in the United States was positively related to acquisition performance as indicated by cumulative abnormal returns. Moreover, legitimate foreign acquirers with high investment ratings were able to leverage cultural distance, given that the relationship between investment ratings and acquisition performance was positive for this group of acquirers. The results reported in this study therefore emphasize the importance of organizational legitimacy and corporate social capital for international acquisition performance, and shed light on the detrimental and beneficial roles of institutional distance in this context. In so doing, this dissertation strengthens institutional theory and social capital theory as powerful perspectives in international strategic management.

Show moreThe preoperational stage of a new venture is characterized by concept definition, idea enhancement, and strategy formulation. Entrepreneurs consult advisors in knowledge sharing activities. Trust is dominant in these entrepreneur-advisor relationships as entrepreneurs rely on an advisor's judgment to keep venture ideas away from competitors. However, the relationships between trust, knowledge sharing, and knowledge security during the preoperational stage of a new high-tech venture are not directly examined in many research studies. Concerning types of trust, McAllister (1995) defines two types of interpersonal trust: affective trust, which develops from emotional bonds between individuals, and calculative trust, which is based on an individual's level of competence and reliability. The present study applies McAllister's (1995) theory of types of trust to Kale, Singh, and Perlmutter (2000) findings to examine how trust relationships between entrepreneurs and advisors affect knowledge sharing and an entrepreneur's use of NDAs. This dissertation's research primary question is, "How does trust between an entrepreneur and advisors affect knowledge sharing and choices of knowledge security mechanisms during the preoperational stage of a new high-tech venture?" I used de Koning and Muzyka's (1999) classification of the entrepreneur's social context to define three advisor types: Close Friends, Business Associates, and Licensed Professionals. Linking these types with literature on trust and knowledge, I hypothesize seven relationships dealing with trust, knowledge sharing, and knowledge security. I used structured and non-structured interview formats to collect data on 143 entrepreneur/advisor relationships in South Florida., The results confirmed that relationship length significantly contributed to affective trust and entrepreneurs were more likely to share knowledge with Business Associates than with Close Friends or Licen found t o be the dominant form of trust driving knowledge sharing but affective trust was not significantly found to impact the use of NDAs. Entrepreneurs expected all advisor types to be competent, experienced, and skilled, reporting nonsignificant differences in calculative trust across advisor types. I did not find the use of NDAs to be associated with any particular advisor type. Rather, NDAs were seldom used during the preoperational stage for reasons such as the entrepreneurs' desires to maintain positive relationships with advisors, along with their reliance on a strong institutional background.

To determine the efficiency of these partnerships between municipal governments and private companies, this study examines the "most" privatized city in the United States, Sandy Springs, Georgia. I compared spending in Sandy Springs to five similar nearby cities and derived cost estimates of government services. I found that the "Sandy Springs Model" of local government lowered costs and increased efficiency when compared to traditional municipalities.
