Show moreWomen's movements and feminisms in Brazil have taken various forms throughout the years, contributing significantly to socio-political actions that favor gender justice. However, Brazilian feminisms remain on the margins of American academic discourse. In the United States, conceptualizations of feminism are often complicated by epistemological practices that treat certain political actions as feminist while dismissing others. The invisibility of Brazilian feminisms within feminist scholarship in the United States, therefore, justifies the need for further research on the topic. My research focuses on feminist articles published by Revista Estudos Feministas, one of the oldest and most well known feminist journals in Brazil. Using postcolonial, postmodern, and critical race feminist theories as a framework of analysis, my thesis investigates the theories and works utilized by feminists in Brazil. I argue that Brazilian feminisms both challenge and emulate the social, economic, and geopolitical orders that divide the world into Global North and South.

Show moreNot much is known about factors of firm performance in emerging economies (EEs). This study investigates two variables that individually and in combination are posited to affect firms in these turbulent environments: receptivity to the influence of trade associations and dynamic knowledge capabilities. It examines the impact of these determinants on three self-reported measures of performance: innovation adoption, a particularly important indicator in EE environments; and two other dependent variables traditionally used in strategy research: profitability (measured as return on sales), and comparative performance (a self-rating of the firm's performance in comparison to its main industry's competitors). The study also attempts to shed light on the effects of perceived environmental uncertainty as a potential moderator. Five hypotheses drawn from the literature are tested with moderated hierarchical regression. Results indicate support for the two main hypotheses in the case of the innovation adoption measure. Moderation effects are also found in the association between receptivity to the influence of trade associations and innovation adoption. Finally, the study contributes with proposed scales for the two independent variables, which are tested and validated, and with a re-examination of the existing scale for perceived environmental uncertainty.

This thesis reviews the causes of and policies used to end hyperinflation using the Brazilian experience between 1980 and 1995. The work of Thomas Sargent in (Hall, 1982) and Phillip Cagan (1956) found a number of common features regarding the causes and the ending of hyperinflation in a number of European countries in the early 1920s and 1940s. They noted that vigorous monetary and fiscal measures were needed to finally end the rapid rise in prices. Second, there was a final jump in the money supply in the months after the rise of prices had ended. Third, the price level did not decline after inflation terminated. And fourth, in each case, the tax burden was increased (through an increase in taxes and a cut in government expenditures). The thesis found that the Brazilian hyperinflation displayed the characteristics previously found by Cagan and Sargent. Furthermore, the policies used to end the inflation and resulting impacts were very much in line with the experiences of the countries studied by Cagan and Sargent.

Road ecology seeks to analyze the spatial and biological patterns of collisions to understand the effect of roadways and best inform transportation planning in mitigating these threats. 215 km of roadway BR-262, that bisects critical habitat of the Brazilian Cerrado and Pantanal in southwest Brazil, was analyzed between April 2011 and June 2012 to assess how biological, physical and landscape characteristics affect clustering of collisions. 518 collisions, representing 40 species, were found to be seasonally clustered between the unimodal rain and flood pulse in a February-March-April window and were spatially clustered over the study area in relation to cash crop and cattle ranching land-use and the rural low-lying Pantanal floodplain. Mitigation seeks to work with local communities and transportation agencies to facilitate fauna safe crossing through the roadway that do not conflict with drivers.

Show moreThis case study focused on describing the perspectives of educators and community members involved in a school-community partnership in an elementary public school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Their perspectives included what they saw as the partnership's history, influence of the Friends of the School Project, benefits, conflicts, processes, and future expectations. This research was significant because community involvement in Brazilian public schools has been growing recently. The researcher was a participant observer in the school, observing activities, interviewing adults, and collecting documents related to the partnership. The result was a holistic narrative of the case study from the triangulation of the methods of data collection and the views of participants. The research revealed a divided community, a previous abusive use of the school by the community, and a school open to constructive partnerships. The Friends of the School had a complementary role in the development of partnerships. The school had positive pedagogy, culture, and participation of parents and volunteers. The partnerships brought resources to the school and enriched the lives of people, particularly the children and the volunteers. There was an unequal distribution of partner activities per grade level and the roles of the citizens, educational professionals, and the state were questioned. Matching interests and respecting school's routines were important in the process of developing partnerships. Participants expected more participation from partners, more efficiency from the state, and better public schools. Their vision was of the children growing to be happy, critical, and able to compete in the world. The conclusions were that the public school was important in the fight against inequalities; the relationship between the school and the community could improve; the Friends of the School helped to make the partnerships official and brought more citizens in to participate in the school; the partnerships enriched the lives of children, parents, educators, and partners; Brazilians needed to demand their rights as stated in the Guidelines and Basis Law of the National Education (1996); and the volunteer action needed to be more organized.

Between August 2005 and December 2006, 139 boat surveys were conducted in Sepetiba Bay, Brazil to sample behavioral patterns and environmental parameters during the occurrence of marine tucuxi groups and aggregations. Aggregations were defined as several groups gathered in an area totaling more than 100 animals, usually engaged in a specific behavior. A total of 65 aggregations (x=177) and 192 groups (x=18) were recorded. Marine tucuxi groups and aggregations differed regarding behavioral...

Aggregations were defined as several groups gathered in an area totaling more than 100 animals, usually engaged in a specific behavior. A total of 65 aggregations (x=177) and 192 groups (x=18) were recorded. Marine tucuxi groups and aggregations differed regarding behavioral activity, geographical location and age composition. Aggregations were temporal associations of several marine tucuxi groups performing foraging/feeding activities probably in response to prey species, abundance, and distribution. Aggregations were primarily located at the interior of the Bay where local topography may aid dolphins in pursuing and herding schools of prey. Presence of neonates and calves was highly correlated with aggregations, reflecting the potential importance aggregations have in the protection, developmental and learning processes of younger animals.

The researcher of this work outlined Bolsonaro’s rhetorical rise, tested his rhetorical personae, “mito” and “Tropical Trump” based on the work of Ware in Linkugel (1982). No other foreign candidate mirrored Trump as much as he did. Bolsonaro also used US imagery in videos, borrowing images and terminologies found in the US culture. By analyzing his rhetorical strategies, the researcher identified Bolsonaro’s representative anecdote in his appeals that led to his rhetorical motivation as outlined by Burke’s dramatism.

Show moreLack of resources, mental health issues, low self-esteem, financial hardships and other maladaptive coping patterns are stressors that significantly impact low-income mothers. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and perceived stress among low-income Brazilian mothers. Additionally, the study investigated the influence of age, educational level, and employment status on the relationship between participants’ emotional intelligence and perceived stress. Sixty-eight (n = 68) adult low-income Brazilian mothers receiving financial assistance from the Centers of Reference in Social Services (CRAS) in Brazil participated in this correlational study. Recruitment and interviews of the participants were conducted by Brazilian case managers. The Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14), and a demographic questionnaire were used to collect data. Results from a Pearson correlation coefficient (Pearson’s r) test indicated a negative correlation between emotional intelligence and stress in the sample. The findings from the multiple regression analysis revealed that the correlation between emotional intelligence and perceived stress in low-income Brazilian mothers does not differ based on age, educational level, or employment.

The concept of “visa regime” forwarded by Banerjee (2022), illustrates the mechanism of state power that controls immigrants and their families through limited legality (Banerjee 2022). Through the qualitative methods of in-depth interviews and ethnographic work, this study compares the experiences of 20 Brazilian international students in a geographical area known for its ethnic communities. South Florida is home to one of the two largest Brazilian communities in the United States, offering an array of opportunities and community support for Brazilian migrants. As demonstrated in this study the experiences of participants demonstrate how the status of international student becomes a waiting room for those hopelessly waiting for an opportunity to acquire permanent residency. With limited pathways to acquire a green card, the waiting room may seem endless for some with limited resources. Leaving both migrants and the educational institutions enabling this waiting room in a vulnerable position.
