The terms which his contemporaries used to describe him differ strikingly from those historians may choose today. Since the 1930s, American historiography has reflected the new emphasis on sociology and psychology with a radical shift in subject matter away from the traditional political focus. Surely, certain truths are known to the modern historian which were not known to those who lived earlier. However, to discard the insights of one generation of historians is, perhaps, to ignore some of history's most important resources.

First the three major speeches given by Gorbachev immediately following the putsch are analyzed using the components of crisis rhetoric. Next the resignation speech is examined using the concepts found in apologia rhetoric. Finally, based on these four speeches, interrelationships between the two rhetorical forms are attempted using clues found within the actual rhetoric.

Show moreI have chosen to begin with an analysis of Megillat/Book of Esther because of its chronological placement as well as its status in Jewish tradition as the prototype of diasporic auto/biography. Briefly, it relates the story of a covertly Jewish queen who makes the decision to risk her life in order to save her people from genocide. (Professor Patricia K. Tull takes credit for the expression, the “Esther moment” to describe Esther’s choice to commit to her life-changing Jewish self-identification, with all its inherent risks.) Determination and recognition of the danger she faces are reflected in Esther’s comment, “If I perish, I perish.” Postcolonial theory is a prism through which to view the ancient story and ultimately relate its elements, particularly “the Esther moment,” to the diasporic auto/biographical narratives included in the dissertation. Robin Cohen’s explanation of the concept of victim diaspora will be contrasted with the Kabbalistic interpretation of diaspora as the divinely orchestrated means to mend the world. The teachings of the Ari, 16th century Kabbalist Rabbi Isaac Luria, as well as 20th and 21st century essays illuminate the discussion of the mystical myths and legends which offer a positive interpretation to several millennia of Jewish exile. A general overview of the genre of autobiography/life narrative includes 20th and 21st century theorists, i.e., Philippe Lejeune, Sidonie Smith, Julia Watson and others, who address specific issues related to modern technology’s role in creating life narratives. The journey extends from parchment scrolls through printing press book production to filmic representations. Though thousands of years separate Book of/Megillat Esther from the interviews, they are unified by significant commonalities. The dissertation will focus on some facsimile of an “Esther moment,” where a Jewish calling spoke to participants and altered the course of their lives. Accessible for viewing online, each narrative is informed by a review of the family’s earlier diasporic journey. Diasporic synergies for each narrative will demonstrate a confirmation of the hypothesis. Connecting to one’s Jewish roots can be viewed as reparation of a rupture, a cultural diasporic journey to reach, if not the physical point of origin, a spiritual homecoming.

The value of worthless lives: Italian immigrant autobiographies by "ordinary people".

Show more"Immigrants left tears and sweat, but no memories." This dissertation tries to prove this assertion by the Italian critic Giuseppe Prezzolini wrong. Italian immigrants have sweated and cried, but many of them also left a trace of their "heroic" voyage between two continents, and two worlds, that took place in waves during the entire XX Century. With an oxymoron, I will speak about the value of worthless lives. These authors are no conquerors, saints or celebrities, but they believe that their life stories are worth being written and remembered. There are many direct ties between the experience of migration and the need to write an autobiography. Autobiography is a response to the trauma of immigration and provides a kind of sutura for a wounded subject. Besides, immigration creates the "individual." Immigration is a kind of Copernican revolution which destabilizes the sense of human self; the immigrant feels the ground shifting under his feet and loses the center of his life, his home. Autobiography thus becomes the tool to build his/her own centrality, his/her own identity as a particle of this chaotic universe. Furthermore, by migrating, the Italian contadino (the majority of them came from the countryside) leaves a land that kept his family tied down for centuries, but most of all leaves the soil of the amorphous "mass" of suffering farmers, and creates a new individual. But the individuality of Italian immigrant autobiographies is somehow different from the individuality of American autobiographies. Our "unorthodox" authors demand a new critical terminology inviting concepts such as "Quiet Individualism" and "Ethos of the Survivor." The dissertation presents a gallery of immigrant self-portraits: nine immigrant workers; five the immigrant workers with a political conscience; ten immigrant workers with a poet's soul (including a farmer and a stonecutter who wrote two remarkable chivalric poems); five immigrants with religious interests; seven immigrant artists; nine immigrant women; eight graduated immigrants; and finally five successful immigrants, perfectly integrated into American society. In all, fifty-eight portraits that tell life stories and provide us with a lived slice of immigration history.

Show moreThis doctoral dissertation explores the life of an African-American female elementary school principal using a unifying qualitative method incorporating biography, portraiture and anthropology called A renaissance method for studying leadership: A caring perspective. A portrait of the principal was derived using this method where verbatim statements were taken from friends, family, teachers, colleagues and supervisors as well as the principal herself at the school site and the town where she was raised to identify emerging themes. The findings indicate that her humanistic approach to leading in high poverty and minority schools was grounded on her ethic of caring, one that she experienced as a child and that became embedded within her character as a human being. The dual significance of this study is that (a) the method provides researchers a new approach to studying the life of a leader from a humanistic approach and (b) the story provides the reader an opportunity to step inside the life of a good leader through an authentic story being told using the words and observations of those who knew her well.

Abstract/Description
-
This thesis discusses Edward Riley Bradley from his birth in 1859 until his death in 1946. Bradley lived a very full and diverse life. He was, in turn, a mill worker, gold miner, gambler, businessman, and philanthropist. Bradley was most noted for owning Idle Hour Farm, the home of four Kentucky Derby winners. Furthermore, he was the owner of the Beach Club of Palm Beach, possibly the most exclusive gambling casino in American history.

Her expression is clear and personal, giving us insight into the world in which she lived. A discussion of her life reveals a lonely girl who turned to music as her permanent voice in history. A discussion of her works reveals a highly intelligent and determined woman who composed brilliant music in spite of debilitating illness and prejudice. A discussion of the woman reveals Lili Boulanger to be an extraordinary person who cared for her family, friends, and fellowman. The first woman to win the Grand Prix de Rome competition in music, Boulanger is a role model for women composers who followed her.
