The aim of this research was to study the coordinative dynamics of multijoint arm movements as a function of forearm spatial orientation. Six subjects rhythmically coordinated flexion and extension of the right elbow and wrist under the following conditions: (1) forearm supine: wrist flexion/elbow flexion and vice versa; and (2) forearm prone: wrist flexion/elbow extension and vice versa. Show moreThe aim of this research was to study the coordinative dynamics of multijoint arm movements as a function of forearm spatial orientation. Six subjects rhythmically coordinated flexion and extension of the right elbow and wrist under the following conditions: (1) forearm supine: wrist flexion/elbow flexion and vice versa; and (2) forearm prone: wrist flexion/elbow extension and vice versa. Starting in either pattern, subjects rotated the forearm in eight 20 steps, producing 15 cycles of motion at a frequency of 1.25 Hz. Switching from pattern (1) to pattern (2) and vice versa was observed at a critical spatial orientation. The critical point depended on the direction of forearm rotation, thus revealing the hysteretic nature of the switching. En route to the transition, regardless of direction of change, critical fluctuations and critical slowing down were observed in the relative phasing between the joints. Such results provide definitive evidence that relative phase is a viable order parameter, spatial orientation a relevant control parameter and loss of stability the chief mechanism leading to observed changes in coordination.

Show moreA delayed response paradigm was used to investigate the cerebral electroencephalographic (EEG) signal preceding bimanual finger flexions of continuously increasing and decreasing movement rates. The Bereitschaftspotential displayed larger amplitudes at faster required response rates as did two spectral frequency modes, which also showed magnitude reversals depending on the initiating finger. Furthermore, at these specific frequency modes, the averaged relative phase between electrode locations C3 and C4, as well as the variance in this measure was found to correspond closely to the variance in inter-response times derived from the subjects' movements. The results suggest the existence of possible signatures on the neurophysiological level which may yield information regarding the efficacy and parametric properties of the impending movement.

Show moreQuantum computers are envisioned to be able to solve mathematical problems which are currently unsolvable for conventional computers, because of their exceptional computational power from quantum mechanics. Therefore, if quantum computers are ever built in large scale, they will certainly be able to solve many classical exponential complexity problems such as the hard problems which the current public key cryptography is constructed upon. To counteract this problem, the design of post-quantum cryptography protocols is necessary to preserve the security in the presence of quantum adversaries. Regardless of whether we can estimate the exact time for the advent of the quantum computing era, security protocols are required to be resistant against potentially-malicious power of quantum computing. In this thesis, the main focus is on the sperformance improvement of one of the potential PQC candidates, isogeny-based cryptography. Several optimized implementations of cryptography applications based on this primitive are presented. From a general viewpoint, the proposed methods, implementation techniques and libraries have a practical impact on the performance evaluation of post-quantum cryptography schemes in a wide range of applications. In particular, the provided benchmarks and optimizations on ARM-powered processors provide a reference for comparison and evaluation of isogeny-based cryptography with other post-quantum candidates during the first round of NIST's PQC standardization process.

Show moreCryptographic algorithms are being developed and incorporated into network security protocols to provide secure communication over vulnerable mediums like the Internet. These protocols utilize secret and public key mechanisms to carry out data integrity, confidentiality, authentication, and non-repudiation. The urge to deploy cryptosystems on low-end devices, based on the constantly growing Internet of Things (IoT) world, requires optimal design and implementation of cryptographic algorithms and protocols to achieve small communicational and computational cost, while preserving the privacy of the transmitted data. Scenarios of low bandwidth, constrained memory, and limited processing power are common when targeting embedded devices; however, security requirements are still present due to the sensitive information that may be communicated. In this thesis, we address the need for optimal cryptographic primitives implementation design in terms of computing capabilities, energy and power consumption, and memory usage to accommodate the deployment of cryptographical systems on resource-constrained devices.

Within these months was lost perhaps the last opportunity to eliminate the nuclear threat to the world, and gone a chance to avert an international arms race. The subject of responsibility for failure to reach agreement on the American proposal, presented by Bernard M. Baruch at the first meeting in 1946, is here addressed. When negotiations were still possible, Baruch remained inflexible because of reliance upon a winning weapon. The Russian delegate, Andrei A. Gromyko, was unshaken in clinging to national security, and optimistic about the Soviet development of its own bomb. In no way was agreement possible. Both sides took positions which ensured failure.

The Key West Agreement of 1948 (KWA) was crucial in the Navy's fight to save naval aviation from Air Force encroachment. Prior to the KWA, the Air Force attempted to control the roles and missions surrounding naval aviation. Prior to the KWA, the Air Force attempted to control the roles and missions surrounding naval aviation. The Air Force in fact, wished to emasculate naval aviation, which in turn would have made it downplayed its importance during the early Cold War years. But the KWA assigned all roles and missions surrounding naval aviation to the Navy and not to the Air Force. In so doing, the KWA gave the Navy the right to control all land- and carrier-based aviation as well as develop new technology and weapon systems such as the supercarrier. Without the KWA, the Navy could have lost control of naval aviation. The thesis highlights the importance of the KWA, and explains reasons why historians have failed to focus adequate attention to the subject.

Show moreJapan is currently the country with the greatest ability to influence nuclear proliferation patterns via its own pursuit of nuclear weapons, making it vital to address the foundations and potential influence of Japan's nuclear decision. This analysis applies the history, as well as modern theories, of nuclear arms to conduct a case study of Japan's current status for the purpose of determining how likely Japan is to build nuclear weapons, what may cause it to do so, and what would happen if it did. The study examines numerous factors including Japan's technological and militaristic evolution, its psychological and political barriers to nuclear weapon development, international proliferation pressures, regional and U.S. relations, Chinese and North Korean security threats, the international implications of Japan's nuclear decision, the possibility of a clandestine weapons program, and how to prevent Japan from pursuing nuclear weapons.
