Show moreBinuclear oxo- and sulfide-bridged Mo(V)-cysteine and Mo(V)-EDTA complexes are chosen as model compounds for nitrogenase enzyme. Both groups of complexes undergo electrochemical reduction in a single four- electron step to Mo(III) dimers. The reduced binuclear Mo (III) units dissociate into catalytically active species capable of reducing the nitrogenase substrate, acetylene. Ease of dissociation increases as oxygen is replaced by sulfur in the bridging unit. Electrocatalytic reduction products of acetylene consist primarily of C2H4 and C2H6 at low partial pressures, but C4H6, C4H8, and higher hydrocarbons predominate at higher pressures. The reduction of substrate is believed to occur by a Mo(III) catalyst adsorbed on the electrode surface. A mechanism is proposed for the e lectrocatalysis, and its relationship to the enzymic catalysis is discussed.

Abstract/Description
-
This thesis deals with the efficient markets hypothesis as it applies to the securities market. The first chapter provides the various forms of the EMH and its theoretical basis. Chapter two analyzes the weak form of the EMH and the major empirical contributions concerning it. Chapter three presents the strong forms of the EMH. It is concluded on the basis of a substantial and consistent body of analysis that efficient is an accurate description of the securities market.

Show morePhosphorus (P) is required for all living organisms. Fully oxidized pentavalent (+V) is the principal form in organisms, however studies on Desulfotignum phosphitoxidans show the enzymatic metabolism of reduced P oxyanions. Thus a natural source of reduced P is expected. Geothermal waters are naturally occurring reducing environments and ion chromatography has been used for the detection of submicromolar concentrations of P, yet the detection of reduced oxyanions is complicated by fluoride and hydrogen carbonate with similar elution times as hypophosphite(+I) and phosphite(+III) respectively. Studies had shown that simplifying the matrix through pretreatment with silver and sulfonic acid cartridges improves IC limits of detection (LODs). The effects of pretreatment are dependant upon the total concentration of ions in solution. The purpose of this study is to determine IC phosphorous oxyanion LODs and to maximize signals by analyzing the relationship between filtering techniques, effective concentration of P oxyanions, and total ions in the matrix.

Show moreThe position of the cactus family, Cactaceae, within the order Caryophyllales was examined by outgroup analysis of chloroplast rbcL gene sequence data. Comparative data came from 28 outgroup species in 15 families and six ingroup species. Phylogenetic Analysis with PAUP 3.1 produced twelve equally parsimonious trees; these were used to generate a strict consensus tree. MacClade 3.06 was used to refine the polytomies in the consensus tree. Analysis indicates that the Cactaceae is a monophyletic clade; moreover, these results support the work of other analyses that the sister family to Cactaceae is the Portulacaceae. Other relationships within the order are not completely consistent with previous studies. For example Molluginaceae and Caryophyllaceae occupy a central position in the cladogram; Achatocarpaceae aligns with the Amaranthaceae and Chenopodiaceae; and Basellaceae is presented as the basal family within the order. Lastly, the Jamaican cactus Opuntia spinosissima was derived from a common ancestor with the Florida Keys endemic, Opuntia corallicola.

Ursell [1] has shown that there is a family of edge wave solutions of the shallow water equations, and Ball [2] provided a normal mode solution for the exponential beach. This study investigated, experimentally, the excitation of edge waves on a concave exponential beach by waves normally incident on the beach. The experimental investigation included the study of edge wave frequency, amplitude and particle motions. The results indicated that resonance occurs under suitable conditions for edge wave excitation. Viscosity, nonlinearity and defraction at the beach sidewalls reduced agreement between experiments and theory. The effects of these parameters on edge waves should be explored in more detail in further research.

Show moreThe elect;rochemical reduction of Fe2(salen)2O at a platinum electrode in dimethylsulfoxide is investigated using the techniques of cyclic voltammetry, controlled potential coulometry and chronoamperometry. The effects of concentration and addition of a proton source on the reduction mechanisrn are investigated. The reduction proceeds by two related mechanisms. At short-times, Fe2(salen)2O is reduced by two sequential one-electron steps producing an Fe(III)Fe(II) dimer and an unstable Fe(II) dimer. At long-times the mixed-valence dimer reacts leading to transfer of 1.5 electrons per Fe2 unit. Mechanisms consistent with the experimental data are proposed involving the formation of a tetrameric structure.

Show moreThis thesis uses a fundamentalist approach to portfolio selection similar to that proposed by Benjamin Graham. The purpose is to examine the existence of undervalued securities and to test a methodology designed to identify those that could be considered superior investments. The model designed to select, combine and evaluate performance on risk adjusted basis takes into consideration fundamental principles of modern portfolio theory. Specifically, this analysis evaluates the informational contribution of price earnings ratios, earnings growth and dividend payments. The hypothesis tested is that undervalued securities selected under the conditions here proposed can produce performance results consistently superior than those of a strategy based on passively holding a market portfolio.

Show moreThrough a small contained environment, this study evaluates an information-based complexity metric theory and its relationship to the effort expended in constructing a program. The metric, which calculates the amount of information present in a program specification, determines the specification's complexity measure. The observed measures of programmer effort were the numbers of keystrokes, insertions, deletions, and runs needed to complete the program specification. It was theorized that a program with a higher complexity value than that of another program will require more programmer resources to complete. A significant relationship between the metric and the number of keystrokes was found.

Show moreRaman spectroscopy was used to investigate how phase structure and phase stability of zirconia mixtures depend on temperature, type and concentration of added rare earth oxides, and fabrication process. All 8wt% yttria samples exhibited the tetragonal structure between 300 and 10 K. The TZP sample, prepared under pressure and fully hardened, exhibited the most completely stabilized tetragonal structure. The plasma coating process did not improve the stability of the tetragonal structure. Adding ceria to zirconia did not completely stabilize the tetragonal structure, while adding alumina actually destabilized it. Mode Gruneisen parameters, obtained from changes in frequency for yttria samples with different concentration, agreed with published results under pressure, except for one Eg mode. The negative value obtained for this mode was ascribed to changes in cation-anion interactions. The temperature dependence of the linewidth for this mode was quantitatively explained by cubic anharmonic interactions.

The best known unidimensional deterministic scaling method is Guttman scaling. The scope of inquiry is limited to scaling with four dichotomous scale items. As a consequence of this examination, the paper offers two contributions to the study of scaling. First, it identifies two paradoxes of existing unidimensional deterministic scaling methods. Second, it suggests a general framework, called segment analysis, from which to approach unidimensional deterministic scaling with dichotomous scale items.

Abstract/Description
-
This thesis focuses on factor analysis as a technique. It thus includes a survey of the various factor mode ls, their theory and mathematical development, a survey of its previous use for empirical studies in economics, and empirical tests of sensitivity of alternative factor techniques. From the results of the sensitivity test it was concluded that different factor techniques yield very similar results and that factor techniques are of value for empirical studies in economics.
