Show moreFederal government budget deficits and federal government debt have been the cause of controversy and debate in recent years. Economists have argued over the effects of government debt and government deficits in the economy. Of particular interest is the view that associates large government deficits and government debt to higher rates of interest and to reduced private investment in the economy. An alternative view contends that federal budget deficits and federal debt have no effect on interest rates and private investment in the economy. Statistical techniques were used to test both views regarding the effects of budget deficits.

Show moreThis thesis studies an important phase of American temperance reform in the early nineteenth century. For twenty two years preceding Civil War, temperance reforms attempted to gain political and legal sanction for their crusade. Such efforts resulted in varying degrees of success in different states. In researching this thesis many books, sermons, and journals from the period were used. These have led the author to conclude that temperance reformers successfully applied pressure tactics on politicians. They also perceived the necessity of gaining lasting public opinion formation to pass and sustain restrictive liquor laws. Their inability to maintain such favorable public opinion led to rapid decline in coercive temperance by 1860, bringing to an end the first stage in American legal temperance.

This thesis examines whether the short run imports elasticities for travel and passenger transportation services of USA with respect to the exchange rate are smaller than the long run. Three distinct types of demand for imports of USA for travel and passenger transportation services were specified and estimated for this purpose: 1) aggregate, 2) from European and Mediterranean area, and 3) from selected European countries. Show moreThis thesis examines whether the short run imports elasticities for travel and passenger transportation services of USA with respect to the exchange rate are smaller than the long run. Three distinct types of demand for imports of USA for travel and passenger transportation services were specified and estimated for this purpose: 1) aggregate, 2) from European and Mediterranean area, and 3) from selected European countries. The empirical findings indicate that in the three cases, the short run imports elasticities are smaller than the long run. These findings support the position that the "J curve effects" in USA balance of payments are introduced to some extent by the travel account. The thesis also contains a brief review of the theory of utility trees and its implications for econometric estimation of systems of demand equations.

- ECONOMIC DETERMINANTS OF URBAN CRIME RATES.
- Creator
- FRASER, RUSSELL EDWARD., Florida Atlantic University, McPheters, Lee R., College of Business, Department of Economics
- Abstract/Description
-
This study explains variation in urban crime incidence as a function of a number of socio-economic variables, including income, education, and urban blight. Ordinary least squares regression analysis is applied to cross-section data from the 60 largest Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas, for 19 70. Various extensions of the basic model are presented, using log variables, a lagged endogenous variable, and indices derived from factor analysis of a large matrix of socio-economic variables.

Show moreCongress, through enactment of the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974, has injected management tools and techniques into it's division of the labor of the budgetary process. This has changed the relationship between the legislative and executive branches of government in regard to the budgetary process. Previous to the 1974 budget reform, Congress had altered the budgetary process significantly in 1921, giving extensive responsibility in budget preparation to the President and his staff. While during the succeeding years the Executive branch had utilized new management tools and techniques in budget preparation, the same could not be said for t.he legislative branch in budget evaluation. Two attempts at reform, in 1946 and also in 1950, failed and criticism continued. After a confrontation with President Nixon in the early 1970's Congress moved to create the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974.

- PRODUCTIVITY AND INDUSTRIAL POLICY IN THE UNITED STATES.
- Creator
- HENN, PETER J., Florida Atlantic University, Stronge, William B., College of Business, Department of Economics
- Abstract/Description
-
This thesis examines the relationship between productivity growth and industrial policy using J.S. data from 1948 to 1981. A growth accounting model is used to study productivity growth and the recent productivity slowdown. Beth sides of the industrial policy debate are offered. The analysis of the productivity slowdown is then applied to the industrial policy debate to see if the establishment of the latter could have avoided the former. The thesis purports a negative response to the question.
