Show moreSocial media’s role in daily life is on the rise, but as social media use increases, so do questions about its potential benefits or harms. This set of studies examined the relationship between social media use, wellbeing, and perceived network responsiveness, a measure of an individual’s perception about the degree to which their online social networks are caring, validating, and understanding. Two pre-registered correlational studies which employed surveys of undergraduate students (Study 1a: N = 218, Study 1b: N = 179) found that perceived network responsiveness was positively correlated with life satisfaction and negatively correlated with loneliness. A pre-registered experimental study was also conducted in which young adults recruited from a crowdsourcing platform (N = 236) were randomly assigned to either reduce social media use to ten minutes per platform per day or to continue their normal use for one week. Participants completed nine surveys (an initial survey, seven daily surveys, and one follow-up survey) about their wellbeing, perceived network responsiveness, and social media use. The results of the initial survey also showed that perceived network responsiveness was positively correlated with life satisfaction and negatively correlated with loneliness. Contrary to predictions, the relationship between experimentally manipulated social media use and change in wellbeing outcomes (i.e., life satisfaction and loneliness) was not significantly moderated by perceived network responsiveness. Additionally, there were no significant differences between conditions with regard to wellbeing outcomes. Overall, these studies demonstrated an association between perceived network responsiveness and wellbeing while underscoring the need for focus on the more social aspects of social media use.

Show moreMax Weber, Karl Mannheim, and Karl Marx suggested that there is a relationship between economic and political institutions and that behaviors and attitudes are influenced by this. Viewing this postulate as a conception which posits the economic mode of production as the locus of causality for culture, this examination of capitalism as culture, investigates how education and its pedagogical techniques, as a means of "enculturation," reflects the capitalist economic mode of production. Building on the theoretical notions in the Sociology of knowledge and Structuralism, this hermeneutical analysis discusses how pedagogical techniques and curriculum arrangements of public schools in capitalist societies correlate with the organization of labor (for it is that role of the self which is dominant in capitalist societies). Data for this research was gathered through the content analysis of pedagogical techniques and curriculum arrangements adopted by The School Board of Broward County, Florida. Results show that the current shift in the organization of labor (from industrial to post-industrial) parallels, and therefore correlates with, the shift in curriculum and pedagogical arrangements' of The School Board of Broward County, Florida; as such it is a legitimate claim to suggest that the socialization of the self is determined by its relation to the mode of production.

This study explored the relationship between memory and social judgment. Subjects evaluated someone who was described in both desirable and undesirable terms in a taped conversation. They used a computer mouse to express their judgments on a moment-to-moment basis for 90 sec. under one of three instructional sets: memory-based (mouse judgment upon completion of the conversation, based on their recall of information), on-line (mouse judgment while listening to the conversation), and off-line (mouse judgment upon completion of the conversation, based on their judgments formed while listening to the conversation). Half the subjects believed their judgments were relevant to the person's fate (high importance), half believed their judgments were not relevant to his fate (low importance). Subjects in the off-line/important condition demonstrated sustained oscillation in their mouse judgments throughout the judgment period in accord with dynamic integration. In all other conditions, subjects converged on a stable judgment relatively quickly, in accord with static integration.

Show moreSocial influence is sought to distribute information processing for decision-making when data is limited. Undergraduate students selected information with normative or informational wording to supplement a fabricated academic integrity appeal from their university and decided whether to affirm the charge. A novel measure, the Adaptive Scale of Preference for Normative Versus Informational Social Influence (ASPNVISI), was piloted in comparison with a Polish scale of influence preference, individual difference measures in motivation (e.g., Need for Closure), and behavioral measures of influence-seeking. Results did not support the hypotheses that psychological needs would predict behavioral social influence preferences, though Need for Cognition and Need to Belong predicted self-reported preferences. The ASPNVISI was correlated with the existing scale of influence preference, providing support for its continued development. Contrary to the hypothesis, confidence in the decision on a charge of academic dishonesty was not related to selected influence; race and conservatism were related to confidence, and gender to the selections. Next steps include further pilot testing of the ASPNVISI and expansion of the behavioral task.
