The study was designed to investigate the relationship of gender, cognitive level, and attitude with mastery of weather vocabulary and concepts, development of weather prediction skills and concepts, frequency of variables manipulated per trial using an expert system, and difference in attitude (pre and post treatment). These variables represent factors which may have importance in science instruction. Procedures. The sample included 83 7th grade students enrolled in general science courses in a private school in an urban area. Assessment instruments included Test of Logical Thinking, Student Appraisal Inventory, Textbook Test, Prediction Test, and frequency of variables manipulated per trial while using the expert system, Weather Prediction. A record of grouping preferences while using the expert system and an opinion survey were employed. Findings and conclusions. (1) None of the independent variables (gender, cognitive level, or attitude) had a statistically significant correlation with the variables under study. (2) The analysis of variance produced no statistically significant relationship for mastery of weather vocabulary and concepts or mastery of weather prediction skills and concepts with the independent variables. Nor was there a significant relationship between difference in attitude and gender or cognitive level. (3) For this small sample, the interaction of gender, cognitive level and attitude did seem to have an effect on frequency of variables manipulated. High cognitive level females with low attitudes were the most methodical and low cognitive level males with high attitudes were the most random in their approach. This was a weak conclusion based on some unequal and small cell sizes. (4) An expert system computer program was found to be a useful tool in studying student manipulation of variables. Recommendations. (1) Recommendations for further study include: investigation into: (a) the effect of student practice on multivariate problems, (b) the effect of personality factors on student manipulation of variables, (c) the order and direction of change of frequency of variables manipulated by students, (d) the frequency of variables manipulated per trial by a larger number of subjects or different aged subjects. (2) Recommendations for curriculum planning, classroom management using computer programs, and for computer program development are also included.

Show moreIt was the purpose of this study to describe the common factors at select high-performing high schools leading to student success in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search Competition. A review of the literature indicated that some high schools have a high success rate in producing Westinghouse winners. The identified factors were translated into administrative practices which may foster success in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search Competition. The instrument used to determine commonalities was a twenty-two item questionnaire that probed the nature and function of the school's science research program. In addition, six schools were identified for an in-depth case study. Among the findings of the study are the following factors present in each of the successful programs: (1) a highly motivated and talented teacher who promoted enthusiasm; (2) teachers with advanced degrees in science; (3) teachers who kept themselves abreast of recent advances by reading journals and periodicals; (4) teachers who were free from homeroom or bus assignments in exchange for running the program; (5) successful programs without exorbitant facilities or equipment; (6) interested and talented students; and (7) a variety of competitions in which students participated. The major conclusion reached is that the most important ingredient in administering a successful science research program is having an interested and talented teacher who is able to promote enthusiasm for and originality in science. The major recommendations for School Boards and Superintendents who wish to provide a successful science research program are as follows: (1) Identify gifted and talented science students who are afforded equal opportunity to science research programs; (2) Organize science research programs that are based at the district level; (3) Seek state funding that is targeted to those districts without the resources to provide library and laboratory experiences; (4) Encourage school administrators who observe the following guidelines: (1) Establish a policy which supports science research programs at the high school level; (2) Recognize the fact that not any teacher can fulfill this position. Therefore, identify and recruit teachers with the necessary enthusiasm and commitment to coordinate this type of program; (3) Delegate the responsibility for the program to the person selected; (4) Provide released time for the coordinator of the program; (5) Seek community support; (6) Evaluate the program and the coordinator periodically.

It also examined external influences that affected the teachers’ ability to engage in collaborative inquiry. Observational, written, and interview data were collected from observations of teachers’ face-to-face meetings and reflections, individual interviews, a focus group interview, and online reflections. The results of this study revealed that collaborative inquiry is a form of professional development that includes answering curricular questions through observation, communication, action, and reflection. This approach was developed and implemented by middle school science teachers. The premise of an inquiry is based on a need with students. Middle school science teachers came to consensus about actions to affect students’ conceptual understanding, took action as stated, and shared their reflections of the actions taken with consideration to current and upcoming school activities. Activities involved teachers brainstorming and sharing with one another, talking about how the variables were merged into their curriculum, and how they impacted students’ conceptual understanding. Teachers valued talking with one another about science content and pedagogy, but did find the inquiry portion of the approach to require more development. The greatest challenge to conducting collaborative inquiry and reflection was embedding teacher inquiry within a prescribed inquiry that was already being conducted by the Sundown School District. Collaborative inquiry should be structured so that it meets the needs of teachers in order to attend to the needs of students. A conducive atmosphere for collaborative inquiry and reflection is one in which administrators make the process mandatory and facilitate the process by removing an existing inquiry.

Show moreThe purpose of this phenomenological multi-case study and three-person interview, was to discover what select prominent African-American scientists perceived were obstacles to overcome to be successful leaders in their professional lives, and the opportunities that aided in their professional growth. Through the addition of the threeperson interview, the researcher discovered commonalities between the perceived obstacles and opportunities of current science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) professionals and the perceptions of selected historically prominent scientists. This study examined documents of the period and relics of prominent African- Americans who were in STEM fields and lived from 1860 to 1968. A description of the setting that influenced how the scientists perceived the phenomenon was written with the approach being anchored in the social constructivist tradition. Commonalities emerged through coding experiences of the individuals, which yielded patterns to help explain the phenomenon. By investigating their perceptions, insight was gained into understanding the attributes, tools and skills, and tailored experiences that encouraged Thomas Burton, Kelly Miller, George Carver, Daniel Williams, Matthew Henson, Ernest Just, Charles Drew, Percy Julian, William Cobb, and Benjamin Peery to achieve success in STEM fields between 1860 and 1968. The significance of the study is multifaceted: understanding the obstacles that African-American scientists had to overcome in their professional lives can result in the development of science educators who are better informed regarding the appropriate types of assistance that can be provided to aid their students in overcoming obstacles. This can hopefully increase their opportunities to succeed within the science field. This study can result in the development of science educators who are more sensitive in addressing the needs of the developing minority student, and can encourage, educate, and enlist more individuals to enter into the dialogue regarding the disparity of minority representation in STEM fields.

Show moreGiven both the unprecedented attention to the importance of providing children with the best possible science textbooks and the overwhelming evidence that students in the United States are severely lacking the most basic science knowledge, the decline in the number of students pursuing science degrees is alarming. In spite of all the efforts being made, a disparity still exists between (1) the wealth of science information available, (2) the apparent ease of access to scientific information, and (3) the lack of scientific academic progress being made in classrooms across the United States. A literature review was conducted which included the areas of textbook analysis and textbook readability levels, the fields of textbook analysis and readability, and findings from recently published books about textbook readability. The majority of the literature reflected an urgent need for science textbooks to be revised. Based on the information gathered during the literature review, the study examined the readability levels of elementary level science textbooks that were published by six textbook publishers. Results from the study revealed that when used properly, readability formulas provide an objective look at textbooks. After applying these formulas to the selected elementary level science textbooks, it became clear that very few changes were implemented between the most recent previous editions and the current editions. The textbooks remain too difficult for the students using them. The findings from this study will help science textbook publishers and textbook writers see that some changes need to be made in the way their textbooks are written. In order to maintain a competitive edge in the global marketplace, more students need to pursue science. In order for more students to do that, they need to pursue science degrees, but in order for them to pursue science degrees, they need to have a certain degree of confidence and level of interest in the subject matter. For that to happen, science textbooks need to be more inviting, more user-friendly, and more interesting to the readers. This study concludes with recommendations for further research.

Show moreThis study investigated the effect of teaching reading through the content area of science on the reading achievement test scores of middle school below level readers when the science teachers received extensive staff development. Therefore, the staff development model developed and implemented by the researcher was an important part of this study. Participants were 811 seventh and eighth grade students who scored between the 21st and 50th percentile on a standardized measure administered each spring. Four hundred and five students served as the experimental group and 406 students served as the control group. The control group received reading instruction in separate reading classes taught by certified reading teachers. There were 16 teachers from 10 middle schools who volunteered to be a part of this study. The 10 science teachers received 60 hours of staff development that included modeling, coaching, and feedback. There were four full days of training prior to school opening, after school seminars, on site assistance with lesson planning, modeling of lessons, coaching, and feedback. A 2X2 ANCOVA was used to determine statistical relationships between the method of instruction (reading taught through science and reading taught in separate classes) and the grade level of the students (seventh and eighth grades). Informal qualitative data was gathered on the teachers' knowledge base for teaching reading and teacher attitudes regarding their responsibility for teaching reading. A pre- and posttest of teacher knowledge and a pre- and post survey of teacher attitudes were administered to each teacher involved in this study. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in the reading achievement test scores of seventh and eighth grade below-level readers who received reading instruction in science and those who received reading in separate classes of reading taught by certified reading teachers. The informal data showed that the science teachers who were involved in the study did significantly increase their knowledge base about teaching reading through their content area. This was reflected in the difference between their pretest and posttest scores on the test of teacher knowledge. There was also a change in their attitudes about the responsibility for teaching reading. On the pre survey they indicated that the science content should be their main instructional responsibility. On the post survey they indicated that teaching reading should be a major focus of their instruction.

Furthermore, there has been a dramatic increase in the enrollment of students of Hispanic and other ethnic backgrounds in U.S. post-secondary institutions between 1976 and 2013 (from 4% to 16%) (National Center for Education Statistics NCES, 2016). Until now, no systematic research has focused on the differential effects of selfefficacy on academic achievement in monolingual and bilingual undergraduate college students. The present study aimed to investigate this relationship, as well as contribute additional insight on whether the academic self-efficacy of monolingual and bilingual undergraduate college students plays a role in their academic success specifically in science and math courses. Additionally, the findings of this research study were expected to provide data to inform the development of educational programs that might specifically target monolinguals or bilinguals in enhancing students’ self-efficacy. Seven instructors of foundational undergraduate science courses and math courses at a southeastern university agreed to contribute to the study by asking their students for their voluntary participation in the data collection. A total of 361 students participated in the study. Overall, 256 (70.9%) participants reported being monolingual and 105 (29.1%) reported being bilingual; 335 (92.8%) students were enrolled in science courses and 26 (7.2%) were registered in math courses; 237 (65.7%) were female students and 124 (34.3%) were male. Demographics, self-efficacy, and sociolinguistic data were collected using the Self-Efficacy Research Study Online Questionnaire. Final science and math grades were also collected from the instructors at the end of the semester for all students who volunteered to participate in the study. The findings of this research study revealed that the self-efficacy levels of undergraduate college students in science and math predict their academic achievement in these subjects. They also showed that the self-efficacy levels of bilingual participants are higher than those of their monolingual counterparts. Findings also indicated that when the relationship between final grade and self-efficacy was examined separately in each linguistic group the correlation was significant and positive for monolinguals.

Show moreThis study sought to investigate the benefits of using children's literature in fifth grade classrooms in order to promote greater student interest, engagement, and understanding of key grade level history standards. Instruments were created by the researcher to examine the criteria expected for both standards and literary quality in history-related historical fiction, biography, and informational tradebooks. Children's literature was selected based on expert's recommendations and award winning and honor books from 1970 to present. Four sets of content-analyzed Historical Literary Triads, one historical fiction, one biography, and one informational tradebook, for three United States Historical Eras most frequently addressed by 48 states and the District of Columbia's fifth grade standards were analyzed. Using a content analysis approach, data concerning the representation of fifth grade United States history state standards in select children's books were compiled. The literature was analyzed for the frequency with which the United States history standards were met and for its ability to support and/or reinforce the standards. Data concerning the presence of criteria designated for quality in children's literature were compiled. The degree of the presence of both quality and standards criteria was calculated both within an Era and among the three Historical Eras. The researcher then compared the comments and examples of individual genres with degrees of standards presented in the completed Historical Literary Triads used within a Historical Era. A discussion of content comparisons, reinforcements, and extensions presented or not presented by the Historical Literary Triads was discussed. These analyses assisted the researcher in determining the degree of quality and supportive content that was contained in the recommended and/or award winning books and the degree to which the Historical Literacy Triads created complemented United States history state standards. The content analysis concluded that while each children's literature book had some merit in terms of literary quality and/or addressing United States history standards, the Historical Literary Triads was overwhelmingly more inclusive, assuring breadth and depth of the materials needed for fostering historical learning and historical inquiry.

Show moreThere are many demands on the elementary classroom teacher today, such that teachers often do not have the time and resources to instruct in a meaningful manner that would produce effective, real instruction. Subjects are often disjointed and not significant. When teachers instruct using an integrated approach, students learn more efficiently as they see connections in the subjects. Science and language arts, when combined to produce an integrated approach, show positive associations that can enable students to learn real-life connections. In addition, with the onset of technology and the increased usage of technological programs in the schools, teachers can use technology to support an integrated curriculum. When teachers use a combined instructional focus of science, language arts, and technology to produce lessons, students are able to gain knowledge of concepts and skills necessary for appropriate academic growth and development. Given that there are many software programs available to teachers for classroom use, it is imperative that quality software is used for instruction. Using criteria based upon an intensive literature review of integrated instruction in the areas of science and language arts, this study examines science and language arts software programs to determine whether there are science and language arts integrated themes in the software analyzed. Also, this study examines whether more science and language arts integrated themes are present in science or language arts software programs. Overall, this study finds a significant difference between language arts software and science software when looking at integrated themes. This study shows that science software shows integrated themes with language arts more often than does language arts software with science. The findings in this study can serve as a reference point for educators when selecting software that is meaningful and effective in the elementary classroom. Based on this study, it is apparent that there is a need to evaluate software for appropriate use in the classroom in order to promote effective education.

Show moreThis study examined a model to predict success on the Advanced Placement Computer Science (APCS) examination. The sample included all students (N = 423) who participated in the APCS program in the Palm Beach County Public School System from 1985 to 1994. Predictor variables consisted of the number of courses taken in specific content areas at the secondary level, semester grades in the APCS course, grade point average, and gender. Multiple regression analysis indicated the significance of these variables in predicting the score on the APCS examination (F (12,280) = 5.848, p $<$.001). Further discriminant analysis identified the most accurate subset of predictors. All students were divided into two groups based on their scores on the APCS examination (pass/fail). The variables that occurred most frequently in the best subsets included the number of semesters taken in advanced mathematics; overall high school grade point average; gender; the grades achieved in both first and second semester in Advanced Placement Computer Science; and the semesters in computers. A model based on these six predictors had the highest (p $<$.01) predictive accuracy of all models studied (67.6% hit rate). Additional study of other independent variables that contribute to success on the APCS examination is needed.
