A theoretical study of the stability of two-dimensional elliptical vortices in a time-dependent, periodically varying external straining flow was conducted. Show moreA theoretical study of the stability of two-dimensional elliptical vortices in a time-dependent, periodically varying external straining flow was conducted. The mean value of the oscillating straining flow was chosen so that the vortex would be stationary in the absence of fluctuations of the external field about the mean. If the frequency of straining is near to the natural frequency of the vortex for small-amplitude oscillations of the vortex core, so that the vortex is forced near its natural frequency, a resonance occurs such that the aspect ratio of the elliptical core boundary initially oscillates with an amplitude that increases linearly with time. After an initial period of growth, the aspect ratio will either follow a bounded limit cycle at large time or it will elongate exponentially with time. The nonlinear evolution of the vortex at large time is studied numerically, and distinct regions of behavior in the parameter space for the vortex are obtained.

Show moreIn this thesis we describe a local-neighborhood-pixel-based adaptive algorithm to track image features, both spatially and temporally, over a sequence of monocular images. The algorithm assumes no a priori knowledge about the image features to be tracked, or the relative motion between the camera and the 3-D objects. The features to be tracked are selected by the algorithm and they correspond to the peaks of '2-D intensity correlation surface' constructed from a local neighborhood in the first image of the sequence to be analyzed. Any kind of motion, i.e., 6 DOF (translation and rotation), can be tolerated keeping in mind the pixels-per-frame motion limitations. No subpixel computations are necessary. Taking into account constraints of temporal continuity, the algorithm uses simple and efficient predictive tracking over multiple frames. Trajectories of features on multiple objects can also be computed. The algorithm accepts a slow, continuous change of brightness D.C. level in the pixels of the feature. Another important aspect of the algorithm is the use of an adaptive feature matching threshold that accounts for change in relative brightness of neighboring pixels. As applications of the feature-tracking algorithm and to test the accuracy of the tracking, we show how the algorithm has been used to extract the Focus of Expansion (FOE) and compute the Time-to-contact using real image sequences of unstructured, unknown environments. In both these applications, information from multiple frames is used.

Show moreVision is a critical sense for many species, with the perception of motion being a fundamental aspect. This aspect often provides richer information than static images for understanding the environment. Motion recognition is a relatively simple computation compared to shape recognition. Many creatures can discriminate moving objects quite well while having virtually no capacity for recognizing stationary objects. Traditional methods for collision-free navigation require the reconstruction of a 3D model of the environment before planning an action. These methods face numerous limitations as they are computationally expensive and struggle to scale in unstructured and dynamic environments with a multitude of moving objects. This thesis proposes a more scalable and efficient alternative approach without 3D reconstruction. We focus on visual motion cues, specifically ’visual looming’, the relative expansion of objects on an image sensor. This concept allows for the perception of collision threats and facilitates collision-free navigation in any environment, structured or unstructured, regardless of the vehicle’s movement or the number of moving objects present.

Show moreThe representation of lead female characters as sexually threatening or naturally deceptive, hysterical, or evil, especially non-White or non-gender conforming characters, in popular science fiction and superhero film and television productions over the past few decades is concerning in that these films promote misogynistic and intersecting racist and hetero/sexist tropes in genres that typically appeal to younger audiences. Within their historical roots as cheap print entertainment, i.e., pulp magazines and comic books, directed at White working-class boys and young men, these genres have historically, and unabashedly, featured scantily clad, sometimes racially stereotyped, sexually titillating temptresses such as the Dragon Lady and Catwoman that threatened the hyper-masculine hero as well as humanity. Ignored by literary and cinematic critics throughout the twentieth century as juvenile male fantasy entertainment, the science fiction and superhero genres in film and television now dominate Hollywood productions. Unfortunately, these genres in the twenty-first century still often promote damaging female tropes that suggest women as naturally defective, deceptive, power-hungry, irrational, raging monsters reminiscent of historical patriarchal myths of women. Additionally, a recent popular Netflix television series includes a character assigned female at birth (AFAB) who presents as gender non-conforming and carries attributes such as irrational rage and murderous violence that follows the historic cinematic trope of the “gleeful gay killer” as seen in Psycho (1960) and Dressed to Kill (1980). Although these themes in film and television are fantasy, they also mirror and bring to life the political and cultural anxieties of a significant number of men in our country who support the ideology of the manosphere that includes anti-feminist, anti-LGBTQ+, White supremacist, and racist beliefs. This dissertation examines three popular Hollywood films and one Emmy Award winning Netflix television series from the science-fiction and superhero genres since 1996 that reveal damaging female tropes that still prevail in popular entertainment.

However, the analysis shows that it can also be interpreted as an ethnographic film. It examines which intersecting identities related to Seto women are depicted in the film and whether audiences and critics recognize the power dynamics of these intersections. It also analyses how the Estonian cultural economic environment, the filmic text, audience comments and critics reviews reinforce or challenge hegemonies connected with these intersections. Drawing on the principles of postcolonial feminism, intersectionality, and other critical theories, the thesis concludes that even though the filmic text challenges traditional gender roles, it still reinforces the Estonians’ one-sided portrayal of an exotic, commodified Seto ethnicity. Moreover, the cultural economic environment and reception of the film also bolster this view of Seto ethnicity.

The impact of IMU error relative to predicted turbulence spectra was quantified, as well as and the ability of the motion compensation approach to remove sensor motion from the ADV measurements. The presented data processing techniques are shown to allow the evaluated ADV to be effectively utilized for quantifying ambient current fluctuations from 0.02 to 1 Hz (50 to 1 seconds) for dissipation rates as low as 3x10-7. This measurement range is limited on the low frequency end by IMU error, primarily by the calculated transformation matrix, and on the high end by Doppler noise. Inshore testing has revealed a 0.37 Hz oscillation inherent in the towfish designed and manufactured as part of this project, which can nearly be removed using the IMU.

The study hypothesizes that vampire films have been underexamined as a site of contestation over the meanings of racial differences because they have been considered a "white" genre. Show moreThis Master's Thesis examines movies of political and social significance during Hollywood's Golden Age. Significance is here defined as belonging to those films that have been singled out by historians and critics for their social "conscience" as well as films whose significance I have found in the course of my research and after a lifetime of watching movies. The films of this era included strong social and political analysis, contrary to a tradition of film study which depicts the Golden Age as either apolitical entertainment or basically a conservative defense of the status quo. The thesis describes how the politics of the Golden Age films began with a critical, anti-establishment outlook in the 1930's but evolved as a cooperative partner of the establishment by the Second World War. This change occurred in part because of the special relationship that Hollywood (led by Warner Brothers Studios) developed with the Roosevelt Administration. I shall further examine the consequences of this evolution for the film industry in the post-war era and cold war eras.

Through an examination of genre, art cinema, the styles of the Steven Spielberg and Terrence Malick, and a close textual analysis of both films, this thesis argues that Saving Private Ryan, although updating generic conventions of violence through its opening segment, quickly turns traditional in its depiction of plot, character, masculinity, and nation. The Thin Red Line, however, combines conventions of the war film with elements of art cinema, producing a film that popular critics often labeled in an inadequate or incomplete manner, creating inappropriate generic expectations among viewers.

The results of the filtered magnetic residual are compared to similarly processed Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data to correlate whether a magnetic signature is caused by ocean phenomena.

The purpose of this paper is to propose a redefinition of the impression of reality in cinema to create inclusion and space for animation and new, emerging technologies. This reality, redefined, is divided into two categories: the carbon and the constructed. Analyzed through three key identifiers of film—photography, motion, and physical mechanisms—animation is a modern example of early filmmakers’ intent, demonstrated by my short film, Libby.

The results show correction for motion provides up to an order of magnitude reduction in turbulent kinetic energy at frequencies of motion while the IMU is found to generate 2% error at 1/30 Hz and 9% error at 1/60 Hz in turbulence intensity.

Whereas male masturbation has generally been normalized by being the butt of friendly jokes and a popular subject in romantic comedies, the predominant discourse surrounding female masturbation, both in society and the movies, is silence and stigmatization. Show moreWhereas male masturbation has generally been normalized by being the butt of friendly jokes and a popular subject in romantic comedies, the predominant discourse surrounding female masturbation, both in society and the movies, is silence and stigmatization. However, female masturbation is symbolically powerful because it signifies a female sexuality that is not dependent on male presence. This thesis seeks to explore depictions of female masturbation, specifically looking at how female characters who engage in autoeroticism are stigmatized, controlled or silenced. This thesis will also explore the minority of depictions that show the act as liberating in films like Pleasantville (1998) and Better than Chocolate (1999).

Show moreThis thesis examines the use of motion detection and analysis systems to detect falls and repetitive motion patterns of at-risk individuals. Three classes of motion are examined: Activities of daily living (ADL), falls, and repetitive motion. This research exposes a simple relationship between ADL and non-ADL movement, and shows how to use Principal Component Analysis and a kNN classifier to tell the 2 classes of motion apart with 100% sensitivity and specificity. It also identifies a more complex relationship between falls and repetitive motion, which both produce bodily accelerations exceeding 3G but differ with regard to their periodicity. This simplifies the classification problem of falls versus repetitive motion when taking into account that their data representations are similar except that repetitive motion displays a high degree of periodicity as compared to falls.

These experiments explore counterchange apparent motion with regard to a new apparent motion stimulus where the necessary counterchanging information required for apparent motion is provided by altering the luminance of the background. It was found that apparent motion produced by background-counterchange requires longer frame durations and lower levels of average stimulus contrast compared to foreground-counterchange. Furthermore, inter-object distance does not influence apparent motion produced by background-counterchange to the degree it influences apparent motion produced by foreground-counterchange.

Show moreThis study investigates the use of film and video as political tools for women to promote collectivity, raise consciousness, and incite both social and political change. Through textual analysis of seven experimental films and videos, from the years 1965-1975, it is apparent that women used techniques of reclamation of three major aspects of identity formation—namely, body, pleasure, and physical space—to individually take steps toward liberation, while adding to the social phenomenon of second-wave feminism. Through this analysis the following question is addressed: how, and why, did the female media makers of the women’s liberation movement and sexual revolution implement both film and video to challenge social constructions and ideas regarding femininity, domesticity, and sexuality? The textual analysis performed in relation to this research question is rooted in cultural materialism and takes historical, economic, and cultural factors into account.

Show moreThe goal of this thesis is to develop a test platform for measuring surface effect ship (SES) response to wave loads. The platform is designed and built incorporating a self-propelled vehicle with data acquisition and navigation capabilities. Theoretical analysis is performed, various hardware and electronic parts are designed and built and software applications developed. Wave tank experiments are conducted for test platform evaluation and determination of vehicle response to a range of wave conditions. Furthermore, a three-dimensional model of the AIRCAT scale model SES is created. The theoretical analysis shows that the scale effects in some cases are great, so resonance phenomena cannot be observed. The experimental results clearly show that the heave, pitch and aircushion excess pressure fluctuations increase as the air-blower input level increases. The bow skirt arrangement needs improvements and further experimentation is necessary in order to draw conclusions about the wave loads applied on the skirt.

Show moreThe politicized use of humor in accented cinema is a tool for negotiating particular formations of identity, such as sexuality, gender, ethnicity, and class. The body of work produced by contemporary women filmmakers working in Australia, specifically Tracey Moffatt, Monica Pellizzari, and Clara Law, illustrates how these directors have employed critical humor as a response to their multiple marginalization as women, Australian, and accented filmmakers. In their works, humor functions as a critical tool to deconstruct the contradictions in dominant discourses as they relate to (neo)colonial, racist, globalized, patriarchal, and displaced pasts and presents. Produced within Australian national cinema, but emerging from experiences of geographical displacements that defy territorial borders, their films illuminate how critical humor can inflect such accepted categories as the national constitution of a cinema, film genre, and questions of exile and diaspora. Critical humor thus consti tutes a cinematic signifying practice able, following Luigi Pirandello's description of umorismo, to decompose the filmic text, and as a tool for an ideological critique of cinema and its role in (re)producing discourses of the nation predicated on the dominant categories of whiteness and masculinity. The study offers a theoretical framework for decoding humor in a film text, focusing on the manipulation of cinematic language, and it provides a model for a criticism that wishes to heighten the counter-hegemonic potential of cinematic texts, by picking up on the humorous, contradictory openings of the text and widening them through a parallel dissociating process., Finally, critical humor in the accented cinema of women filmmakers like Moffatt, Pellizzari, and Law is shown to constitute a form of translation and negotiation performed between the national, monologic constraints of film production and cinematic language, the heteroglossia of the global imaginaries that have traveled since the beginning with film technology, and the local and diasporic accents informing a filmmaker's unique style and perspective.
