Show moreWhat have been envisaged and focused in the research as deliberated in this dissertation, refer to certain state-of-the-art perspectives of modern wireless telecommunications. Specifically, the objectives and scope of the research efforts carried out include systematic analyses of two major wireless technologies, namely, the Bluetooth(TM) and the CDPD system. The relevant tasks undertaken refer to analytical modeling, experimental studies and simulations pertinent to the performance considerations of the test systems subjected to EMI/RFI influences. The following can be enumerated as the specific research endeavors pursued and completed: (1) Identification of performance implications in the Bluetooth(TM) and CDPD wireless transmissions subjected to EMI/RFI ambients. (2) A comprehensive presentation on the system description, performance requirements, protocol issues and operational environments of the two wireless technologies under study. (3) Development of analytically tractable models, which describe the extent of EMI/RFI on the Bluetooth(TM) operations and provide expressions to compute the transmission impairments involved in terms of the associated packet losses. (4) Modeling of CDPD performance and deducing the statistics of data packets seizing the free AMPS channels. The associated results offer compatible simulations to deduce the data packet blocking probability. The enhancement of such blocking caused by any impulse-like noise invading the system is also modeled. (5) Proposals for methods towards EMI solutions through adopting novel shielding in the wireless systems. The aforesaid efforts are comprehensively addressed supplemented with appropriate background details and literature survey. In conclusion, the scope of the present study is discussed and possible open-questions for future study are identified.

This identification is done by using dynamic Base Station information about the users present in the cell at any moment. I-RAMA effectively reduces the amount of time spent in the resource auctions without introducing contention or excessive complexity at the Base Station. The effects of introducing data users in the system are investigated using a simulation, and it is shown that I-RAMA guarantees Quality of Service for isochronous users while maintaining a bounded delay for data users at much higher loads than RAMA.

Show moreIn the present computer age, cellular technology and portable computers are becoming an integral part of the life. Each computer user wants to access the computing resources, irrespective of the location. Because of this need the computing paradigm "Mobile Computing" has assumed a primary role in modern computer communication technology. While dimensioning the network resources, it is very important to know how the users move around the geographical area covered by the cellular network. This knowledge allows us to plan the system resources in order to achieve the QoS required. The major factors that affect the performance, along with the mobility pattern of the mobile user, are the speed at which the user is moving and the load on the network. In this research, we study different types of mobility patterns the user can follow and it's impact on the network services. We have proposed and evaluated a reservation scheme to improve the QoS in the cellular network. The reservation scheme reserves some part of the bandwidth for handoff connections. We have developed simulation programs and have studied three mobility patterns namely leading movement type, random motion, and square-street mobility pattern for measuring the QoS for cellular network. It has been observed from the results that at an average speed of 50 miles per hour with the average loading of the network, a significant improvement in QoS has been achieved for all the mobility patterns by using the reservation scheme.

A straightforward broadcasting by flooding is usually very costly and results in substantial redundancy and more energy consumption. Power consumption is an important issue since most mobile hosts operate on battery. Broadcasting based on a connected dominating set (CDS) is a promising approach, where only nodes inside CDS need to relay the broadcast packet. Wu and Li proposed a simple distributed algorithm for calculating CDS in MANET. In general, nodes inside CDS consume more energy to handle various bypass traffics than nodes outside the set. To prolong the life span of each node and, hence, the network by balancing the energy consumption in the system, nodes should be alternated in being chosen to form a CDS. Activity scheduling deals with the way to rotate the role of each node among a set of given operation modes. In thesis I propose to apply power-aware CDS notions to broadcasting and activity scheduling. I also introduce distance rule and extended rules to further reduce broadcasting energy consumption. The effectiveness of the proposed method are confirmed through my simulation experiment.

Show moreIP address autoconfiguration poses a challenge for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) because it has to be done to ensure correct routing. An IP autoconfiguration protocol that is based on quorum voting is proposed. Nodes are distributed configured when a write quorum can be collected. Making the compromise between message overhead and data consistency, quorum voting enforces data consistency by ensuring fresh read on every access so that each node is configured with a unique IP address. The protocol is scalable since the configuration information is maintained locally and no central server is involved. Extensive experiments are carried out comparing the configuration latency, message overhead and address reclamation cost between our protocol and existing stateful protocols. The simulation results show that nodes are configured in lower latency and the message overhead for maintaining the network is fairly low. Moreover, the proposed protocol greatly enhances the address availability by keeping proper redundancy.

Show moreWireless ad hoc networks are infrastructure-less multi-hop networks consisting of mobile (such as in mobile ad hoc networks) or stationary (such as in wireless sensor networks) wireless devices. These networks involve several challenges, including limited bandwidth and energy resources, frequent topology changes, and a lack of central control. Local acting, self-organizing, and self-healing algorithms (also called localized algorithms) are essential to the design of wireless ad hoc networks. A connected dominating set (CDS) is frequently used in wireless ad hoc networks as a virtual backbone to support efficient routing, service discovery, and area monitoring. In addition, efficient broadcasting (i.e., finding a small set of forward nodes to ensure full delivery) can be viewed as forming a CDS on-the-fly. The periodically maintained virtual backbone is called a static CDS, and the temporarily formed forward node set is called a dynamic CDS. For efficiency and robustness, the ideal CDS construction algorithm is lightweight, has fast convergence, and minimizes the CDS size. This dissertation focuses on providing a generic framework to unify localized CDS construction schemes, including both static and dynamic CDS constructions, for wireless ad hoc networks. The goal is to provide insights on how to form a small CDS (forward node set) in dynamic networks with affordable overhead and high robustness. A classification of CDS construction algorithms for wireless ad hoc networks has been provided at the beginning. An efficient scheme, called Rule K, has been proposed for static CDS construction. Rule K achieves a probabilistic constant upper bound on the expected CDS size, which is currently the best known performance guarantee for localized CDS algorithms. Rule K has been extended to a unified framework, called the coverage condition, which contains most existing localized virtual backbone construction and efficient broadcast algorithms as its special cases. The coverage condition has been further extended to construct a k-connected k-dominating set for higher robustness, and integrated in an iterative process that further reduces the CDS size while maintaining the same level of robustness.

Voice over IP service is likely to play a key role in the convergence of IP based Internet and mobile cellular networks. The mobility management performance for Mobile IP and Session Initiation Protocol is the focus of this thesis. After illustrating the operation of the protocols, the discrete event simulator, Network Simulator 2 (ns2), is used to compare the performance of the two protocols. The comparison of the protocols is done by comparing average end-to-end delay and the ratio of the number of packets received to the number of packets originally sent (Packet Delivery Fraction). The impact of mobility is analyzed by studying the performance of the protocols, for various mobility scenarios. The effect of an increase in the number of nodes and increase in velocity of the mobile node on the performance of the Mobile IP and SIP is compared. The performance of the Mobile IP and SIP is compared by measuring the performance metrics of the two protocols for similar simulations. The results obtained as a result of the simulations leads us to some interesting conclusions.

To understand and create an e cient method to process faces in images by computers, one must understand how the human visual system processes them. Face processing by computers has been an active research area for about 50 years now. Face detection has become a commodity and is now incorporated into simple devices such as digital cameras and smartphones. An iOS app was implemented in Objective-C using Microsoft Cognitive Ser- vices APIs, as a tool for human vision and face processing research. Experimental work on image compression, upside-down orientation, the Thatcher e ect, negative inversion, high frequency, facial artifacts, caricatures and image degradation were completed on the Radboud and 10k US Adult Faces Databases along with other images.

Augmented reality, one of the newest state-of-the-art technologies, offers users the opportunity to add virtual information to their real world surroundings in real time. It also has the potential to not only augment the sense of sight, but also other senses such as hearing. Augmented reality could be used to offer the opportunity to complement users' missing sense. In this thesis, we study augmented reality technologies, systems and applications, and suggest the future of AR applications. We explain how to integrate augmented reality into iOS applications and propose an augmented reality application for hearing augmentation using an iPad2. We believe mobile devices are the best platform for augmented reality as they are widespread and their computational power is rapidly growing to be able to handle true AR applications.

Show moreWeb services have become increasingly important over the past decades. Versatility and platform independence are just some of their advantages. On the other hand, grid computing enables the efficient distribution of computing resources. Together, they provide a great source of computing power that can be particularly leveraged by mobile devices. Mobile computing enables information creation, processing, storage and communication without location constraints [63], not only improving business' operational efficiency [63] but actually changing a way of life. However, the convenience of anytime and anywhere communication is counterbalanced by small screens, limited computing power and battery life. Despite these limitations, mobile devices can extend grid functionality by bringing to the mix not only mobile access but sensing capabilities as well, gathering information from their surroundings through built in mechanisms, such as microphone, camera, GPS and even accelerometers. Prior work has already demonstrated the possibility of enabling Web Services Resource Framework (WSRF) access to grid resources from mobile device clients in the WSRF-ME project [39], where a representative Nokia S60 Smartphone application was created on a framework, which extends the JSR-172 functionality to achieve WSRF compliance. In light of today's mobile phone market diversity, this thesis extends the solution proposed by WSRF-ME to non-Java ME phones and to Android devices in particular. Android-based device numbers have grown considerably over the past couple of years despite its recent creation and reduced availability of mature software tools., Therefore, Android's web service capabilities are studied and the original framework is analyzed in order to propose a modified framework version that achieves and documents WSRF compliant communication form Android for the first time. As a case study, an illustrative mobile File Explorer application is developed to match the mod framework' functionality to the original WSRF-ME's use case. An additional case study, the LIGO Monitor application, shows the viability of mobile web services for monitoring purposes in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Observatory (LIGO) grid environment for the first time. The context that an actual application implementation such as LIGO provides, allows some of the challenges of real mobile grid clients to surface. As a result, the observations made during this development give way to the drafting of a preliminary set of guidelines for Globus service implementation suitable for Android consumption that still remain open for proof in future works.

Show moreVehicular Ad hoc NETworks (VANETs) are a subclass of Mobile Ad hoc NETworks and represent a relatively new and very active field of research. VANETs will enable in the near future applications that will dramatically improve roadway safety and traffic efficiency. There is a need to increase traffic efficiency as the gap between the traveled and the physical lane miles keeps increasing. The Dynamic Traffic Assignment problem tries to dynamically distribute vehicles efficiently on the road network and in accordance with their origins and destinations. We present a novel dynamic decentralized and infrastructure-less algorithm to alleviate traffic congestions on road networks and to fill the void left by current algorithms which are either static, centralized, or require infrastructure. The algorithm follows an online approach that seeks stochastic user equilibrium and assigns traffic as it evolves in real time, without prior knowledge of the traffic demand or the schedule of the cars that will enter the road network in the future. The Reverse Online Algorithm for the Dynamic Traffic Assignment inspired by Ant Colony Optimization for VANETs follows a metaheuristic approach that uses reports from other vehicles to update the vehicle’s perceived view of the road network and change route if necessary. To alleviate the broadcast storm spontaneous clusters are created around traffic incidents and a threshold system based on the level of congestion is used to limit the number of incidents to be reported. Simulation results for the algorithm show a great improvement on travel time over routing based on shortest distance. As the VANET transceivers have a limited range, that would limit messages to reach at most 1,000 meters, we present a modified version of this algorithm that uses a rebroadcasting scheme. This rebroadcasting scheme has been successfully tested on roadways with segments of up to 4,000 meters. This is accomplished for the case of traffic flowing in a single direction on the roads. It is anticipated that future simulations will show further improvement when traffic in the other direction is introduced and vehicles travelling in that direction are allowed to use a store carry and forward mechanism.

Show moreA Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) is a wireless ad-hoc network that provides communications among vehicles with on-board units and between vehicles and nearby roadside units. The success of a VANET relies on the ability of a routing protocol to ful ll the throughput and delivery requirements of any applications operating on the network. Currently, most of the proposed VANET routing protocols focus on urban or highway environments. This dissertation addresses the need for an adaptive routing protocol in VANETs which is able to tolerate low and high-density network tra c with little throughput and delay variation. This dissertation proposes three Geographic Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (GEOADV) protocols. These three GEOADV routing protocols are designed to address the lack of exibility and adaptability in current VANET routing protocols. The rst protocol, GEOADV, is a hybrid geographic routing protocol. The second protocol, GEOADV-P, enhances GEOADV by introducing predictive features. The third protocol, GEOADV-PF improves optimal route selection by utilizing fuzzy logic in addition to GEOADV-P's predictive capabilities. To prove that GEOADV and GEOADV-P are adaptive their performance is demonstrated by both urban and highway simulations. When compared to existing routing protocols, GEOADV and GEOADV-P lead to less average delay and a higher average delivery ratio in various scenarios. These advantages allow GEOADV- P to outperform other routing protocols in low-density networks and prove itself to be an adaptive routing protocol in a VANET environment. GEOADV-PF is introduced to improve GEOADV and GEOADV-P performance in sparser networks. The introduction of fuzzy systems can help with the intrinsic demands for exibility and adaptability necessary for VANETs. An investigation into the impact adaptive beaconing has on the GEOADV protocol is conducted. GEOADV enhanced with an adaptive beacon method is compared against GEOADV with three xed beacon rates. Our simulation results show that the adaptive beaconing scheme is able to reduce routing overhead, increase the average delivery ratio, and decrease the average delay.

Show moreIEEE 802.11 networks successfully satisfy high data demands and are cheaper compared to cellular networks. Modern mobile computers and phones are equipped with 802.11 and are VoIP capable. Current network designs do not dynamically accommodate changes in the usage. We propose a dynamic power control algorithm that provides greater capacity within a limited geographic region. Most other power algorithms necessitate changes in 802.11 requiring hardware changes. Proposed algorithm only requires firmware updates to enable dynamic control of APs transmit power. We use earlier studies to determine the limit of the number of users to optimize power. By lowering transmit power of APs with large number of users, we can effectively decrease the cell size. The resulting gap is then covered by dynamically activating additional APs. This also provides greater flexibility and reduces the network planning costs.

Show moreIn recent years there has been great interest in implementing object recognition frame work on mobile phones. This has stemmed from the fact the advances in object recognition algorithm and mobile phone capabilities have built a congenial ecosystem. Application developers on mobile platforms are trying to utilize the object recognition technology to build better human computer interfaces. This approach is in the nascent phase and proper application framework is required. In this thesis, we propose a framework to overcome design challenges and provide an evaluation methodology to assess the system performance. We use the emerging Android mobile platform to implement and test the framework. We performed a case study using the proposal and reported the test result. This assessment will help developers make wise decisions about their application design. Furthermore, the Android API developers could use this information to provide better interfaces to the third party developers. The design and evaluation methodology could be extended to other mobile platforms for a wider consumer base.

Pertinent wireless network performance measures such as call completion/dropping probabilities and the average number of handovers usually require the probability distributions of the cell dwell time and call holding time; and are therefore not easy to evaluate. The proposed performance evaluation technique requires the moments of the cell dwell time and is given in terms of the Laplace transform function of the call holding time. Multimedia services that have Weibull and generalized gamma distributed call holding times are investigated. The proposed approximation method uses the compound geometric random sum distribution and requires that the geometric parameter be very small. For applications in which this parameter is not sufficiently small, a result is derived that improves the accuracy (to order of the geometric parameter) of the performance measures evaluated.

It has become increasingly important for a cellular network provider to provide the customers with the clearest possible end-to-end speech during a call. However, this perceptually motivated QoS is hard to measure. While the main goal of this research has been on the modeling of the perceptual audio quality, this thesis focuses on the discovery of procedures for collecting audio and diagnostic data, the evaluation of the captured audio, and the mapping and visualization of the diagnostic and audio related data. The correct application of these modified procedures should increase the productivity of the drive test team as well as provides a platform for the accurate assessment of the data collected.

Show moreThis thesis describes a resource discovery technique in mobile ad hoc networks. Resource discovery is technique to search data in among the mobile nodes in the network. The highly dynamic nature of the infrastructure-less ad hoc networks poses new challenges in resource discovery, thus there is a need to for an optimized resource discovery technique. Efficient resource discovery algorithm discovers the resources in a mobile ad-hoc network in an optimized way. As there is no pre-established infrastructure in the network, every node takes its decision in forwarding resources and every node dynamically ranks these resources before disseminating them in the network. Ranking of the resources spreads the data which is of high priority at that instance of time. Ranking avoids the spreads the unwanted or low priority data which will utilize the bandwidth unnecessarily. The efficient resource discovery algorithm also keeps a check that redundant information is not spread in the network with the available bandwidth and the bandwidth is utilized in an optimized manner. We then introduce brokers in the algorithm for a better performance. We present a technique to maintain a constant number of brokers in the network. Our simulations show that, in a network with high density, the efficient resource discovery algorithm gives a better performance than the flooding and rank based broadcast algorithms.

Information Technology (IT) personnel typically perform this task manually by visually inspecting assets to identify misplaced assets. If this process is automated and provided to IT personnel it would prove very useful in keeping track of assets in a server rack. A mobile based solution is proposed to automate this process. The asset management application on the tablet captures images of assets and searches an annotated database to identify the asset. We evaluate the matching performance and speed of asset matching using three different image feature descriptors. Methods to reduce feature extraction and matching complexity were developed. Performance and accuracy tradeoffs were studied, domain specific problems were identified, and optimizations for mobile platforms were made. The results show that the proposed methods reduce complexity of asset matching by 67% when compared to the matching process using unmodified image feature descriptors.

Show moreCollege campuses can be large, confusing, and intimidating for new students and visitors. Finding the campus may be easy using a GPS unit or Google Maps directions, but this is not the case when you are actually on the campus. There is no service that provides directional assistance for the campus itself. This thesis proposes a driver assistant application running on an Android platform that can direct drivers to different buildings and parking lots in the campus. The application's user interface lets the user select a user type, a campus, and a destination through use of drop down menus and buttons. Once the user submits the needed information, then the next portion of the application runs in the background. The app retrieves the Campus Map XML created by the mapping tool that was constructed for this project. The XML data containing all the map elements is then parsed and stored in a hierarchal data structure. The resulting objects are then used to construct a campus graph, on which an altered version of Dijkstra's Shortest Path algorithm is executed. When the path to the destination has been discovered, the campus map with the computed path overlaid is displayed on the user's device, showing the route to the desired destination.
