Show moreA pre-determined percentage of the assets of mutual funds is extracted from each portfolio's value on a daily basis to cover operating expenses. The nature of the relationship between these fund operating expenses and fund size is the focus of this dissertation. A negative relationship is shown to exist between mutual fund operating expense percentages and mutual fund size. Next, a double-log estimating equation is utilized to generate a measure of the elasticity of mutual fund operating expenses with respect to mutual fund size. This expense-size elasticity (ESE) is estimated to be.961 for the entire cross-sectional sample, indicating that a one percent increase in fund size is associated with a.961% increase in fund operating expenses. Next, the elasticity of mutual fund operating expenses with respect to mutual fund size is calculated for each of five fund size categories. The ESE of the largest fund size category is shown to not differ in a statistically significant manner from those of the smaller categories of mutual fund size. ESEs are then calculated for various investment objective categories and are shown to differ in a statistically significant manner. ESEs also differ between load and no-load funds as well as between open-end and closed-end funds. The lack of statistically significant differences between the ESEs of various size categories is also evident in an analysis performed on a cross-sectional sample of mutual fund families. Further, evidence of the lack of significance of fund size in explaining variation in fund-specific ESES is found in an analysis of time series data for mutual funds in existence from 1976 through 1994.

Show moreAn information system is defined as "a system that uses information technology to capture, transmit, store, retrieve, manipulate, or display information used in one or more business processes" (Alter, 1996, p. 61). The use of information systems (IS) in local governments has dramatically increased and diversified over the past ten years. Because IS expenditures are expected to increase, IS management will be a key issue in city governments. In order to explore IS management and outsourcing in American city governments, three theoretical perspectives and three models are employed. The three theoretical perspectives influencing IS outsourcing are (1) economic factors, (2) diffusion of innovation, and (3) organizational factors. The three models focus on three factors: (1) the percentage of total city budget allocated to total IS expenditure, (2) the percentage of total IS budget allocated to IS outsourcing expenditures, and (3) the percentage of total IS budget allocated to each IS function. In Model 1, the findings show that the population size of city government is inversely related to the total percentage of city budget allocated to total IS expenditures: as the population size of city government increases, the percentage of the total budget of the city government allocated to IS expenditures decreases. In Model 2, three theories to explain decisions regarding IS outsourcing are used. Economic factors influencing IS outsourcing decisions are when: (1) pressure to reduce cost is important, (2) access to cutting-edge technology is important, (3) IS requires a long time for the in-house staff to learn, and, (4) IS facilities are not available. However, city administrators did not express a concern about the loss of control of strategic applications, about being locked into a contract, or even about added costs for business or technology changes when their IS is outsourced. Theories of innovation diffusion includes several factors. The findings show that city IS administrators do learn about IS outsourcing from neighboring governments. Organizational factors that can potentially influence the IS outsourcing decision include the type and population size of city government, available resources, and internal transaction costs. IS outsourcing expenditure as a percentage of total IS expenditure does not vary with the type and size of city government, a finding which requires further investigation. The analysis of different types and sizes of city governments appears in Model 3. When more resources are available to the IS department, the city government is likely to hire IS experts, provide facilities, and engage in a higher rate of insourcing. Internal transaction costs measured by time delays are inversely related to the expenditures on IS outsourcing. In Model 3, IS outsourcing expenditure by function as a percentage of total IS expenditure, three theoretical perspectives are employed to explain this analysis. In the category of economic factors influencing IS outsourcing, asset-non specific IS functions such as data processing/operations and network/telecommunications are outsourced in order to reduce cost while asset-specific IS functions, such as application development/maintenance, are outsourced in order to gain access to cutting-edge technology. With respect to whether theories of innovation diffusion explain the IS outsourcing decision, the findings show that city governments investigate other neighboring governments to determine whether there have been IS outsourcing decisions in the areas of data processing/operations, network/telecommunication, and application development/maintenance. According to the findings, first, small city governments tend to allocate a higher IS outsourcing expenditure as a percentage of total IS expenditure to than do large city governments. Second, large city governments tend to allocate a lower percentage of IS outsourcing expenditure to systems planning/management because large city governments tend to set up this IS function within the organization and, thus, spend money on maintaining this function. Third, the council-manager type of city governments tend to allocate a higher rate of IS outsourcing expenditure to network/telecommunication and application development/maintenance than do the mayor-council type of city governments.

It deals with the factors that influence direct and indirect compensation and what special benefits and perquisites are made available to wage and management employees. A multiplicity of influences plays upon any determination of wages for the individual and the organization. These forces vary so in their impact that any static approach to wage criteria is misleading. The executive employee's compensation must contain both financial and non-financial elements designed to supply the urge, stimulus, and encouragement to improve profit performance and enhance the growth, expansion, and progress of the company. Since each form of compensation has both advantages and disadvantages they must be carefully weighed if they are to meet the short-term and long-term objectives of both the company and the employee.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to select from Office of Contract Compliance Program Affirmative Action those guidelines that were time and effort efficient toward achieving personnel integration. The research procedures included rank ordering the guidelines and identifying basic guidelines suitable for any organization's affirmative action plan, and determining consensus of behavior among respondents from diverse organizations regarding their guideline choices. Business respondents selected to participate were identified by members from the United States Commission on Civil Rights, The National Council of La Raza, and the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs. University respondents were arbitrarily limited to administrators and affirmative action officers from state, four-year and upper level, higher education institutions in Colorado and Florida. The response to the survey yielded a rank order of priority listing of affirmative action guidelines, ten basic affirmative action guidelines considered worthwhile for all organizations to include in their affirmative action plans, and a comparison of the behaviors of business and university administrators instituting personnel integration in their organizations.

Show moreWith the escalating challenges posed by global warming, sea-level rise, and natural disasters like hurricanes and tropical storms, coastal erosion has become a critical issue along the US coasts. The economic significance of U.S. coastlines, multitude of services offered by these coastal areas, underscores the critical importance of addressing the threats posed by both natural and human-induced factors that lead to erosion and coastal loss. To enhance future planning and to promote resilience of these invaluable coastal resources, it is essential to gain a comprehensive understanding of the strategies employed to mitigate coastal erosion in response to the diverse array of driving forces. A widely embraced solution to this erosion, caused by both natural forces and human activities, is beach nourishment. Historical assessments of beach nourishment at the regional level have been conducted, however, there remains a gap in national-level analysis examining the overarching trends and the diverse factors that impact these trends. This study aims to provide a comprehensive perspective on beach nourishment practices encompassing 16 coastal states, including the top ten highly nourished states, and an additional six states selected from various coastal regions. It delves into the multifaceted factors that shape these practices, offering a holistic understanding of the beach nourishment landscape at a national level. An extensive analysis of beach nourishment trends and the influence of factors such as sea level rise, storms, hurricanes, hurricane categories, and coastal management approval years on beach nourishment activities was conducted.

Show moreThere is a growing interest and attention for organizations to move from a shareholder capitalist to stakeholder capitalist business model, in which delivering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance is becoming more pronounced. Because of this transition, there is growing pressure for managers at all levels to act in sustainable, socially responsible, and ethical (SRE) ways; yet the current management models are based on maximizing economic value and scientific management. Therefore, the attempts to try and manage 21st century organizations with 20th century management practices and the aspirations of responsible management education have not demonstrated the desired effect (Laasch & Gherardi, 2019), as seen by continued business failures. It is not yet understood whether it is possible for the everyday manager to effectively navigate the tensions and contradictions of trying to deliver economic value to shareholders, social and ecological value to other stakeholders, while simultaneously attending to regulatory policies and, in the process, avoiding burnout for overtasked managers. Conducted in a debt remediation call center in the Dominican Republic, this study used an eclectic design integrating abductive analysis with a cultural-historical activity theory methodology to explore responsible management practices at the lowest levels of management. The findings describe responsible managers as pressure moderators enacting four primary elements: 1) embracing a pluralistic logic of responsibility, 2) accepting tensions with resilience, 3) engaging practices dynamically to moderate pressures, and 4) learning primarily on the job amid real work. In this organization, moderating the pressures of emotional labor was the primary object of their attention.

Show moreThis research explores the impact of interactive communication on business-to business (B2B) relationships. In the past decade the internet and especially social media as a mode of communication has grown rapidly in both consumer and business markets. Drawing on marketing channels and communications literature this paper identifies the dimensions of interactive communication and develops a theoretical framework to examine their impact on satisfaction, commitment, and advocacy. Media synchronicity theory and the concept of the internet as an alternative to the real world are used to distinguish between digital and non-digital modes of communication. Relationship marketing is used to identify the dimensions of interactivity: rationality, social interaction, contact density, and reciprocal feedback. The framework developed is usedto explore the influence of face-to-face (F2F), digital, and traditional, impersonalcommunications on the dimensions of interactivity.Hypotheses linking the mode of communication: personal, digital, and impersonal with the dimensions of interactivity and relational outcomes are empirically examined with data from the commercial printing and graphic design industry. Confirmatory Factor Analysis is used to analyze the measurement and structural model. Personal, F2F communication has the greatest impact on social interaction, reciprocal feedback, and number of contacts. Digital communication has a weaker effect on these dimensions and impersonal communication has the weakest effect. Personal and Digital have equal impacts on rationality and rationality is the only dimension of interactivity positively associated with relationship satisfaction. Contact density has a negative impact on relationship satisfaction and this negative impact is greater with personal communication that it is with digital. The study shows that affective commitment leads to advocacy in a B2B channel, but trust and calculative commitment have no impact on advocacy. The findings of the study have implications for both managers and researchers regarding the mode and content of communications in B2B relationships.

A good crisis communication plan cannot solve a crisis, but it can reduce the damage including helping to maintain a positive corporate identity and keeping the normal operation of a company. Four themes (caring, responsibility, honesty, and quick response) relative to crisis communication were examined in the 1987 and 1982 coverage of the Honda Water-Logged Car Crisis and the Tylenol Capsule Poisonings respectively. An investigation of these themes suggests how the media, represented by news magazines in the two countries, reported differences in corporate implementation of the principles of effective crisis communication based in part on cultural factors.

A non-experimental quantitative study design was employed. The study consisted of 400 graduates of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program. The use of strategic thinking skills was measured by the Strategic Thinking Questionnaire (STQv6) (Pisapia & Reyes-Guerra, 2007). The use of information and communication technology tools was measured by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Fluency Questionnaire (Hilberg, 2007). The EFOs' strategic thinking capabilities of systems thinking (3.58 +/- .447) and reflecting (3.82 +/- .445) compared to previously reported samples from the literature, both empirically and theoretically. Depending upon the sample, some means were significantly higher and others were significantly lower. The strategic thinking questionnaire and the ICT fluency questionnaire were not directly correlated to one another ; however, there were some strong correlations within their subscales. ICT fluency and ICT comfort were highly correlated (r = .516), as well as systems thinking and reflecting (r = .688) at the 0.05 level. There was a significant correlation between age and ICT comfort (r = -.235), as well as between years of experience and ICT comfort (r = -.203) at the 0.05 level. Age moderated the relationship between systems thinking*reflection, and ICT comfort. Race moderated the relationship between systems thinking*reflection, and ICT education/training. This research was significant because it was the first time that Executive Fire Officers have been studied regarding their strategic thinking capabilities and their information and communications technology fluency.

Apart from general business risks, boards are increasingly interested in Information Technology (IT) risks as it affects all aspects of the organization (PricewaterhouseCoopers [PwC], 2013). Since the effectiveness of IT risk management depends on senior managers’ actions, this dissertation attempts to answer the question of whether the maturity of IT risk management practices (the extent to which management performs particular activities to identify, assess, monitor and respond to IT-related risks) in organizations depends on the Chief Information Office (CIO) reporting structure and the board’s leadership structure.

The results indicate that initiating firms have stronger shareholder rights, in contrast with much of the prior research on continuous divident payout. Firms with lower entrenchment index are more likely to initiate dividends... Essay II: Earnings management surrounding dividend initiation. Prior research tests earnings management surrounding changes in dividend payout and researchers conclude that the earnings management is a means of amplifying the dividend signal to the market. However, dividend initiation is a unique event. If initiation represents signaling, similar to a dividend increase, then management will manage earnings upward. If, on the other hand, divident initiation is better explained by the free cash flow hypothesis, then initiation may be entered into with caution or reluctance by management.

For the purpose of this research special need populations will include, but are not limited to, people with physical disabilities, senior citizens, non-English speaking populations, residents and employees without vehicles, and tourists. The main objective of this research is to evaluate different evacuation procedures for special need populations from large urban areas utilizing current public transit systems. A microscopic simulation model was constructed to analyze real life scenarios for evacuation methodologies. A linear programming optimization model was developed to find the optimum locations for evacuation bus stops for the case study area. The results from this research were very interesting and can aid evacuation planners in the future.

Show moreModel stores exist in distributive education laboratories. They are intended to be realistic simulations of a typical retail store in which all functions of marketing and distribution are practical, and in which the majority of the graduates of the program will gain employment and develop careers. The use of the model store as a training laboratory is not fulfilled because a significant element necessary for business operation has not been provided to accompany the physical equipment. A system of management for the model store laboratory is the missing element that must be provided before the model store can be a realistic approximation of that which it was intended to represent. There exists a subordinate need to provide an opportunity to develop interests for careers and provide experiences in the area of business services such as advertising, public relations and marketing research. These experiences are not now practicable within the scope of the model store. They are not generally provided for in the use the model store as learning experiences. Further, a need exists to provide a management plan for providing full-scale participation in all DECA activities. The breadth of activities and extent of competitive opportunities in DECA have become so great that a plan of involvement is necessary before the secondary school chapter can fully realize the benefits provided as learning activities. The purpose of this study is to provide a sys tem of management through which the model store in the distributive education laboratory becomes an authentic representation of a marketing business enterprise. The results of this study will take the form of a student-oriented handbook in which will be constructed and described a Marketing/ Management Model for Distributive Education. A secondary purpose of this study is to expand the learning activities of the model store in order to prepare more students for careers in the area of business services for the marketing process - -specifically: advertising, public relations and marketing research. A third purpose is to aid full - scale participation in the DECA program of youth activities by providing a "management treatment" of the chapter- of-the-year competitive effort.
