Show moreThis thesis aims at real-time measurements of human trust, satisfaction, and frustration in human-robot teaming. Recent studies suggest that humans are inclined to have a negative attitude towards using autonomous systems. These ndings elevate the necessity of conducting research to better understand the key factors that a ect the levels of trust, satisfaction and frustration in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). We utilized a new sequential and collaborative approach for HRI data collection that employed trust, satisfaction and frustration as primarily evaluative metrics. We also used haptic feedback through a soft actuator armband to help our human subjects control a robotic hand for grabbing or not grabbing an object during our interaction scenarios. Three experimental studies were conducted during our research of which the rst was related to the evaluation of aforementioned metrics through a collabora- tive approach between the Baxter robot and human subjects. The second experiment embodied the evaluation of a newly fabricated 3D- nger for the I-Limb robotic hand through a nuclear-waste glove. The third experiment was based on the two previous studies that focused on real-time measurements of trust, satisfaction and frustration in human-robot teaming with the addition of pressure feedback to the system through soft actuators. In the last case, human subjects had more controls over our robotic systems compared to earlier experiments leading to a more collaborative interaction and teaming. The results of these experiments illustrated that human subjects can rebuild their trust and also increase their satisfaction levels while lowering their frus- tration levels after failures or any faulty behavior. Furthermore, our analyses showed that our methods are highly e ective for collecting honest and genuine data from hu- man subjects and lays the foundation for more-involved future research in the domain of human-robot teaming.

Show moreNarcissism is a multidimensional construct consisting of many components and a variety of conceptualizations. One such example is the NARC conceptualization of grandiose narcissism and its two subcomponents admiration and rivalry. This research aims to answer three questions about the NARC conceptualization: (1) what is the relationship between narcissism and Big Six Personality dimensions?; (2) what is the relationship between narcissism and observable behavior?; and (3) how does narcissism relate to situational experiences in daily life? Results showed that, consistent with previous research, narcissism was related to Big Six personality. Additionally, narcissism was related to observable behavior. Finally, the results also showed a relationship between narcissism and every day experience (i.e., situation experiences and state expressions of personality). Most critically, the pattern of results suggests that although admiration and rivalry are related subcomponents of narcissism, they are quite distinct in terms of their personality and behavioral correlates.

I analyzed the human remains while Dr. Brown studied the artifacts. This thesis presents the results of the analyses and compare the findings to other mortuary complexes in Mesoamerica. Despite the paucity of material culture, information regarding context, and the small sample size, I propose Cusirisna as a place of exceptional ritual importance. This project adds to our understanding of cave bioarchaeology, mortuary practices in Mesoamerica, and the prehistory of Nicaragua.

The thesis contextualizes the production of an accompanying media project, which is informed by the history of U.S migration and the media’s impact on the opinion of Americans. Through the observation of production methods, this paper summarizes the process of creating a VR experience that expands the established production pipeline to more fluidly produce immersive interactive content. Using Homebound: The Interactive Immigrant Experience, a collaborative VR project as a prototype for these methods, we were able to integrate and develop a media production pipeline that uses off the shelf hardware in unison with Unreal Engine 4 to produce a prototype VR experience that follows the narrative on a Latin American Immigrant.

It is a reasonable expectation of the human condition to want to feel free and safe because we do not live in a utopian society. There are social injustices, wars, and atrocities that threaten the most basic of human needs and freedoms in many countries across the globe. Homebound, the virtual reality experience, which was developed in Unreal, aims to make sense of this crisis and shed light on the lives affected by this social ill. By using rich environments, virtual production and motion capture, to construct a place that captures the realism of the illegal immigration narrative, this manuscript will show how behavioral and gameplay psychology, when paired with environmental storytelling, can be utilized to craft impactful and empathetic, immersive stories and edutainment experiences for the player.

Show moreA delayed response paradigm was used to investigate the cerebral electroencephalographic (EEG) signal preceding bimanual finger flexions of continuously increasing and decreasing movement rates. The Bereitschaftspotential displayed larger amplitudes at faster required response rates as did two spectral frequency modes, which also showed magnitude reversals depending on the initiating finger. Furthermore, at these specific frequency modes, the averaged relative phase between electrode locations C3 and C4, as well as the variance in this measure was found to correspond closely to the variance in inter-response times derived from the subjects' movements. The results suggest the existence of possible signatures on the neurophysiological level which may yield information regarding the efficacy and parametric properties of the impending movement.

Show moreA paired-comparisons procedure was used to obtain relative duration judgements of identical pairs of normal (e.g. A vs. A) or rotated (e.g.V vs.V) letters. Each pair of letters was presented simultaneously for a duration of 50msec, with one letter in the LVF (left visual field, right hemisphere), and one in the RVF (right visual field, left hemisphere). It was hypothesized that LVF presentations of rotated letters would have a greater apparent duration . This was based on Hock, Kronseder, and Corcoran's (1975) demonstration that rotated letters presented in the LVF produce longer reaction times than RVF presentations on a visual comparisons task. The results were that subjects' "left" vs. "right" responses did not differ significantly for any of the conditions. Methodological considerations were cited as a possible reason for the failure to confirm the present hypo thesis.

Show moreThis thesis is concerned with the development of a new face recognition method that has a high recognition performance and is computationally efficient, so that it can be applied to real time processes. A background research is presented, summarizing the most dominant face recognition methods, with an emphasis to the most popular statistical method, the 'Eigenfaces'. Initially, a new algorithm is developed based only on the computational efficiency criterion. It is simulated, and criterions for achieving higher recognition rates are experimentally and theoretically determined. A new space transform is introduced, which enhances the algorithm's recognition capabilities. Its optimum classification measure is mathematically proven to be one that is inherently provided by the new face recognition algorithm. Finally, the developed method is evaluated, and experimentally compared against the 'Eigenfaces' method, using face data.

Show moreThe author prepared a college sophomore level genetics laboratory manual. The laboratory exercises are unique in that the student studies human organisms instead of the usual non-human plants and animal specimens. The one exception is "Polytene Chromosomes," in which the student studies Drosouhila. Most of the exercises are original; "Polymorphonuclear Leucocytes" and "Polytene Chromosomes," however, are revisions of portions of existing laboratory experiments. The manual should appeal to biology, physical anthropology, physical education, and psychology majors, and should be especially helpful to students planning careers in the medical professions. A knowledge of first year biology, elementary chemistry and mathematics including basic probability and statistics should be prerequisites. The twelve laboratory exercises assume that the student has had little exposure to genetics in the first year general biology course. The first three exercises, "The Physical Basis of Heredity," "Phenotypic Observations, Genotypic Deductions, Inheritance Predictions," and "Pedigree Chart in Genetic Analysis" are interesting, uncomplicated sessions which should give the students an anticipation of the semester's work. The fourth and fifth experiments are methods of determining femaleness in epithelial mucosal cells and in polymorphonuclear leucocytes. Exercise six, "A General Approach to Genetic Counseling," is not usually included in Human Genetics texts. It gives the student opportunity for personal growth and for professional consideration. The seventh exercise, "Lymphocyte Cultures," is divided into two sessions. Although the two parts are long, they are worth doing for the experience in exact timing and measurements, sterile techniques, proper dehydration, staining, and mounting that produce very fine permanent slides of the students' own chromosomes. For more detail of chromosomes, "Polytene Chromosomes" is included. Although prosophila is substituted for Homo sapiens in this laboratory session, the exercise is worthy of inclusion to provide additional experience in microtechnique and histological procedures as added knowledge for the second year student. The following exercise, "Human Chromosomes," properly is for two sessions. The student may go through the procedures of preparing his own karyotype, or he may prepare a karyotype of an unknown individual. The student learns the human chromosomes as defined by arm length and centromere position. "Dermatoglyphics" is interesting in that it shows sexual dimorphisms. Students so inclined may go on with the genetic similarities of races and of geographical areas as evidencep by dermatoglyphics. By the time the last two exercises are to be performed, the students are prepared for the complexity of "Hemoglobin Polymorphism in Selected Human Populations" and "Specific Genomes and the Degree of Relatedness." With the continuation of genetic research, the possibilities for additional exercises are almost limitless.

Show moreThis thesis analyzes cranial modification from various sites and locations within coastal Ecuador. This research aims to identify the various types of tabular cranial modification and understand the methods used to classify each subtype of tabular modification. From this, I discussed the different types of modification and then used that information to contrast between North American and South American bioarchaeological methods of classifying cranial modification. Additionally, I reconstructed the biological profiles of some of the crania. The importance of this research is to introduce a method of identifying cranial modification that has been previously used in South American bioarchaeology to North American bioarchaeology. Furthermore, information on cranial modification regarding the coastal populations of Ecuador is lacking. The data in this thesis contributes a significant amount of knowledge about this practice, allowing this project to provide new information to the field of anthropology and the country of Ecuador.
