The most critiqued of these classifications is between sf produced in Britain, and America. Though Britain remains the birthplace of sf, American author have undoubtedly left a mark on the genre. Scholars mark this difference in the writing styles and themes of authors in these regions. To examine this difference, I analyze two authors that have worked on a common theme: religion and in particular, the concept of hell. Evaluating the arguments put forth by critics such as Peter Kuczka, Cy Chavin, Franz Rottensteiner, and others; I examine works by Scottish author Iain m. Banks, and American author Cordwainer Smith to determine the validity of this classification.

Abstract/Description
-
This poetic thesis is an exploration of the darker side of relationships. There are two parts of this thesis and they are to be read independently of each other. Part one is concerned with the chaotic relationship structure between lovers, husbands and wives, and the unexpected anguish that results from living an inauthentic life. Part two of my thesis is a rumination of a past close friendship and the tragic death of that friend.

The setting is a time when New York is suffering through major economic and social crises. The 1980's had been a time of decadence and over-indulgence, and the beginning of the next decade is forced to pay a large portion of the accrued debts. High crime rates and leaps in the cost of living have created tough living situations for young and old alike. During these years hope is a difficult thing to find. Saints & Heroes illustrates both that lack of hope and the destitution of the situation. But also the escapes people might find while enduring. The collection ultimately commemorates the everyday activities of individuals that simultaneously cripple and sustain the inhabitants of a city.

Add It Up tells the story of exactly that:"the times she didn't." Like an epic poem, Add It Up is a collection of lyric essays chronicling a journey. Starting even before her very beginning, it gives insight into exactly what it is that made her what she was, what she is, and what she intends to be. The pieces of this collection, Prologue, or The Letter I Wish I Wrote Myself Four Years Ago ; Kelpedia ; A Little Bit Peter ; Breakdowns ; Wyrd ; (un)fair ; Kindred ; and Kellypedia, can stand alone, but it's way better if they don't ; it's way better if you add them up.

In one story a girl that lives in other people's houses, longs to tell her story, while in another story a girl struggles with a secret her grandmother leaves behind as she tries to reconstruct her grandmother's story. Some stories use magical and fairy tale-like elements, which work as allusions in the stories and echo the events happening in characters' lives. Another theme present in the collection is that of family and how familial relationships affect identity and self-discovery. In one story, a wildfire allows the stories of different generations to be told, while a widow builds a family out of the aftermath of her husband's death in a different story.

Suddenly thrust into an existence that never quite feels like his own, he finds himself playing the role of husband and father, and assumes a high-paying position at a downtown capping company. Disoriented and with very little knowledge of himself or the people around him he embraces his newfound life, is promoted at work, and finds himself quickly falling in love with his wife and children. But when an unknown villain invades Sunset City seeking the destruction of the Idea Salesman and begins wreaking havoc across town, with the help of a few hard-nosed detectives and some close friends, he slowly comes to learn the true reason behind his new life. Curtis Dorgan has been revised, and he has been called upon by the elusive Idea Salesman to live out his destiny and save the town from its newest and most dangerous threat.

Sharp Edges and Other Lessons is a collection of stories that share a loose thematic link suggested by the title. The various "lessons" encountered by the characters here represent the ways people respond to the many currents and fluctuations roiling beneath the surface of everyday life.

There is skepticism that science fiction (sf) in particular can properly present climate issues in the anthropocentric era that we live in today, but scholars such as Shelley Streeby argue against such perceptions. Science fiction writers that use magical realism, such as Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Nalo Hopkinson, as ecological sf have already accomplished the task of creating speculative works that fit in perfectly under the umbrella of “serious fictions.” These writers work from a non-Anglophone perspective or from a minority group within a Western society, allowing for different modes of thinking to play a part in these bigger discourses. Writers, educators, and other scholars need to reestablish humanity’s kinship with nature.

The poetry lies within the lesbian feminist tradition associated with Audre Lorde, Judy Gahn and Adriene Rich. This is a free verse poetry that combines extensive use of the confessionalist school's "I" voices with the concrete school's sculpting of the poem on the page. By drawing on a variety of divergent sources, such as T. S. Eliot, Robert Browning and Marge Piercy, the poet provides a diverse range of dramatic voices and approaches. This is an attempt to further expand through the process of integration the stylistic options available in the general poetic canon. In addition, the poet hopes to deepen the representation of individuals who have been traditionally "muted" in Western literature, by providing them with a "voice" in her poetry.

Show moreA central theme in the novels of Robert Cormier is the confrontation between the individual and society. Because the protagonists are teenagers, this encounter represents a form of initiation or rite of passage into the adult world. Numerous symbolic images relate the initiation experiences of Cormier's characters to the initiation rituals and practices of primitive tribes. Because the images reveal perversions of modern initiation ordeals and corruption of the mentors who guide them, aberrant values are transmitted. The abundance of symbolic imagery elevates Cormier's work to a significant voice in contemporary mythology. Instead of mystical monsters, Cormier's novices must face the institutional evils found in religion, education, government, the military, international terrorism, and experimental medicine. Most of the youthful heroes fail to complete the passage satisfactorily; some are annihilated by it. Cormier warns that the implacable establishment can corrupt and destroy both individuals and itself.
