Show moreThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceived effectiveness of a multimedia tutorial for first year undergraduate students (FTICs) using a university course registration system; to determine if a relationship existed between perceived effectiveness of the multimedia tutorial, gender, major, ICT usage, ICT education, ICT fluency, and ICT comfort; and to describe the transfer of learning, if any, that resulted from viewing the multimedia tutorial. The study was both quantitative and qualitative in design addressing 10 research questions. The instruments used in this study consisted of the Registration Tutorial which included: (1) an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Fluency Questionnaire (Hilberg, 2007), (2) a multimedia tutorial designed by the researcher demonstrating the university course registration system, and (3) the Registration Video Questionnaire (RVQ) also designed by the researcher measuring perceived multimedia tutorial effectiveness. A Registration Video Tutorial Transfer of Learning Questionnaire (TLQ) was also developed by the research to measure perceived proficiency with the registration system three months after initially viewing the multimedia tutorial. The sample included 1,196 freshmen students from a large public university in the southeastern United States. Results of the study showed that students perceived the multimedia tutorial to be effective (M = 4.19, SD = .756) and seven themes emerged through qualitative analysis as to why the tutorial was or was not effective. Results also showed there was no relationship between multimedia tutorial effectiveness and gender, major, or ICT education., There were however significant weak relationships between multimedia tutorial effectiveness and ICT usage (r = .095), multimedia tutorial effectiveness and ICT fluency (r = .286), and multimedia tutorial effectiveness and ICT comfort (r = -.133). Furthermore, transfer of learning occurred for students (n = 66) who completed the TLQ (M = 4.01, SD =.777) and as suggested by qualitative analysis of student responses. Implications of this study suggested that providing first year undergraduate students with a web-based multimedia tutorial is just the beginning and the need may be to focus upon the development of these students as adult learners so they can feel successful in the early stages of their academic career, thus building the self-confidence they need to effectively navigate the university environment.

Show moreThis qualitative study examined seven preservice teachers' perceptions of their science content knowledge, teaching practices, and reflective processes through the use of the metacognitive strategy of concept maps. Included in the paper is a review of literature in the areas of preservice teachers' perceptions of teaching, concept development, concept mapping, science content understanding, and reflective process as a part of metacognition. The key questions addressed include the use of concept maps to indicate organization and understanding of science content, mapping strategies to indicate perceptions of teaching practices, and the influence of concept maps on reflective process. There is also a comparison of preservice teachers' perceptions of concept map usage with the purposes and practices of maps as described by experienced teachers. Data were collected primarily through interviews, observations, a pre- and post-concept mapping activity, and an analysis of those concept maps using a rubric developed for this study. Findings showed that concept map usage clarified students' understanding of the organization and relationships within content area and that the process of creating the concept maps increased participants' understanding of the selected content., The participants felt that the visual element of concept mapping was an important factor in improving content understanding. These participants saw benefit in using concept maps as planning tools and as instructional tools. They did not recognize the use of concept maps as assessment tools. When the participants were able to find personal relevance in and through their concept maps they were better able to be reflective about the process. The experienced teachers discussed student understanding and skill development as the primary purpose of concept map usage, while they were able to use concept maps to accomplish multiple purposes in practice.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to determine the degree of alignment to national and state standards in public and private university educational leadership certification programs in the state of Florida. The standards used were the National Educational Technology Standards for Administrators (NETS-A) and the Florida Principal Leadership Standard for Technology (FPLST). A total of 16 university technology leadership course syllabi were examined. Nine syllabi were obtained from 11 public universities and seven were obtained from 11 private universities in Florida. Syllabi were examined using rubrics and assigned to one of three categories: definitely aligned, somewhat aligned and not aligned. A percentage was calculated for each type of school and degree of alignment to national and state standards to determine degree of alignment of syllabi. Inferential statistics were used to compare the degree of alignment between public and private universities. Alignment to national standards was more prevalent in syllabi from public universities than private universities while no significant relationship existed between the type of university and state standards. No inferential tests were conducted comparing traditional course syllabi with blended and online course syllabi, as the sample size of online courses was too small. The study found that technology leadership courses are being offered in a majority of Florida's educational leadership programs, indicating a growing commitment to the field. Although most universities offer a course in technology leadership, syllabi are not addressing some key national and state standards., Several recommendations were made including provide experiential learning opportunities for aspiring administrators based on national and state standards, assess current administrators in their knowledge of the NETS-A, provide ongoing district professional development to ensure current administrators are well prepared and promote the NETS-A as national guidelines in technology leadership. Syllabi should address new and emerging technology issues and be created as a best product model addressing all mandated state and national technology standards. National and state technology standards have a strong influence on leadership preparation and must be based on the best research with input from practitioners and higher education faculty.

Show moreThis study compares the achievement in three multimedia instructed World Geography classes between two groups of community college students: those students who were U.S. educated (from primary to secondary schools) and those students who were educated outside of the U.S. (from primary to secondary schools). The research was conducted using three World Geography (GEA 2000) classes at a community college in South Florida, between August 2007 and December 2007. The selected students were divided into two groups: one of U.S. educated students and one of non-U.S. educated students, all of whom volunteered their participation at the beginning of the course. The two groups were mixed males and females. The non-U.S. educated students were educated in 17 different countries. Data were obtained by means of test scores. Statistical analysis of the data was done using SPSS statistical software. The data generated were analyzed statistically by running four t-tests. The .05 level of significance was selected for analysis of data related to the hypotheses. Overall the statistical difference between the achievement of U.S. educated and non-U.S. educated students in their achievement in multimedia instructed geography classes was non-significant as indicated by the results shown in the statistical analysis in the study.

Is there a need in the local industry for graduates from each program with an associate degree from a junior college? 2. Is there a need in the local industry for graduates from each program with a bachelor's degree from F.I.U.? 3. Is there a need in the local industry for graduates with a master's degree from F.I.U. from a program to be developed? 4. Does the demand for graduates at the various levels described above depend on the size of the business measured by total employment? 5. Do the types of jobs available depend on the size of the business? 6. Do the starting salaries for these jobs depend also on the size of the business? 7. Do the opportunities for promotion likewise depend on the size of the business? 8. Is the job market the same within each type of industry regardless of the specific line of products made? 9. Do the employers expect a rapid expansion of their businesses in the next ten years? 10. What is the opinion of the employers on F.I.U., the faculty, and the graduates in general; and, in particular, on the proposed programs? To facilitate the answers to the above questions by the prospective employers, it was necessary to take the following prelininary steps: 1. To find out what programs were available at Miami-Dade and Broward community colleges. 2. To find out what programs had been developed by technical associations. 3. To define a proposal from each program based on existing courses offered at F.I.U. The population was categorized by type related to one of the proposed programs, and by size according to total employment. The investigation was carried out by personal interviews with industries selected at random. The results were as follows: 1. Local industry expects to hire candidates with an associate degree only in Manufacturing Technology. 2. Local industry expects to hire candidates with a bachelor's degree in any of the three proposed programs. 3. Local industry does not expect to consider for employment candidates with a master's degree. 4. The demand for graduates, the types of jobs available, the starting salaries, and the opportunities for promotion do not depend directly on the size of the business. 5. The job market does not depend on the specific line of products made. 6. The opinions on F.I.U. varied from one extreme to the other, and more public relations should be done to have a top image. Several other results were obtained from the investigation, beyond answers to the questions originally posed, which threw additional light on the problem, as follows: 1. There is another important job market for graduates in the proposed programs with firms doing consulting work for the local industry. 2. The proposed programs were unanimously accepted, and some suggestions were given as to topics to be stressed in some of the subjects. 3. Some students considered this type of research important because job opportunities were a prime factor in program selection.

Show moreStudying the relationship between the achievement of technology standards and the availability of on-site support will help educational leaders prepare and modify individual and district-wide technology plans in the years ahead. There are many factors influencing success rates in attaining these standards, including the availability of hardware and software, the adequacy of the equipment, and the amount of training provided to teachers. The relationships between the predictor variable, on-site support and the dependent variables, hardware, software, training, integration, and networking were investigated using correlation analysis in the 190 public schools of Broward County, Florida. The relationships between the additional predictor variables of socioeconomic status and school level and the dependent variables were also examined. An alpha level of.01 was used for all statistical tests. Correlations were found to be significant (p<.01) between on-site support (N=190) and the dependent variables, hardware (r=.338), software (r=.563), training (r=.451), integration (r=.432), and networking (r=.315). Correlations between socioeconomic status (n=174) and school level (N=190) and the dependent variables were found not to be significant (p<.01). The study confirmed that increased levels of technological support helped public schools in Broward County realize greater success in achieving specific technology standards. Educational leaders should consider these findings significant when staffing schools and centers. Further, the socioeconomic status of a school did not influence the achievement of technology standards in the sample. This indicated that schools in this study had access to hardware, software, training, and other resources at a level equal to each other. Broward County policymakers seemed to have succeeded with their efforts to ensure that all schools had access to the funds and other resources needed to meet the locally established standards of technology.

Nationally, teachers have ample devices, applications, productivity software, and digital audio and video tools. Despite all this, the literature suggests these tools are not employed to enhance student learning according to best practices. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to describe and understand perceptions of a technology integration professional development (TIPD) experience of elementary teachers at a suburban, independent school. The TIPD was an ongoing, 40-minute class led by a technology specialist, taking place in teachers’ classrooms, engaging teachers and their students in a 1:1 Chromebook environment. Data collected were through classroom observations, teacher written reflections, school documents, and face-to-face interviews. The results of multiple cycles of coding wrought findings in regard to teachers’ perceptions of effective technology integration, technology class as professional development (PD), and technology class as enabling effective technology integration. The findings showed teachers perceived technology integration to be effective if it benefited the skills or productivity of themselves or their students and if it directly related to their curriculum. Teachers required the support of their colleagues, technology specialist, IT department, as well as traditional and alternative forms of PD to overcome internal and external barriers to integration. Five of the seven teachers explicitly conveyed the technology class to be effective TIPD and all seven learned about a technology tool or resource, technical knowledge or skills, or ideas for integration during the technology classes. Findings also showed the technology class enabled reflection, which led to ideas for integration; the class enabled integration when the content was related to or the tools were useful for their subject area; the class provided the collaboration necessary for integration to occur.

Show moreAutism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) impacts one in every 44 children in the United States (CDC, 2022) and is characterized by marked deficits in social communication with the presence of restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. Students with ASD are increasingly being educated in the general education classroom and are expected to meet the curricular demands thereof (Roberts & Webster, 2020). Due to the core features of their disability, these students often experience significant challenges in written expression. Writing, across content areas, is a primary means in which student learning is measured and evaluated. The COVID-19 pandemic forced educators to explore the use of technology, through the application of synchronous and asynchronous instructional models, to meet the needs of all students while also providing access to Evidence Based Practices (EBPs) and rigorous content (Cox et al., 2021). This study examined the effects of an intervention package consisting of video modeling and virtual coaching on the use of a procedural facilitator (PF) as a planning tool on the overall written quality of the opinion writing with elementary school-aged children with ASD. Writing quality was measured by the presence of planned paragraph elements, Correct Word Sequences (CWS), and Total Words Written (TWW). The significance, acceptability, and effectiveness of the intervention package was also explored. Results indicate a functional relationship between the intervention package and the presence of planned paragraph elements. The intervention package did not directly impact CWS or TWW. Participant perceptions of the intervention package were generally positive. Caregiver perceptions of the intervention package were generally positive. Implications of the present study are discussed along with limitations and recommendations for future research.

Show moreThis study explored the effects of Problem-Based Leaning (PBL) with webanchored instruction in nanotechnology on the science conceptual understanding, the attitude towards science, and the perception of science in society of elementary students. A mixed-methods approach was used. Subjects (N=46) participated in the study for approximately two and a half weeks. A pretest was administered for science conceptual understanding and for attitude towards science. An intervention, web-based nanotechnology anchor, Catching the Rays, followed. Catching the Rays navigated subjects through a nano quest on sunscreen. After the intervention, a posttest was administered for each science conceptual understanding and attitude towards science. Following, a purposeful selection of interviewees (N=6) participated in a Nano Post- Interview. Pretest/posttest data were analyzed using a paired t test. Results of the paired t test for science conceptual understanding (post- being larger than pre-, p <. 01) and attitude towards science (post- being larger than pre-, p < .01) were significant at the p < .05 alpha level. Nano Post-Interview data were coded and analyzed independently by two raters for emerging themes. Two themes of "Risks and Benefits" and "Solves Problems" emerged from subjects' (N=6) responses to perception of science in society questions. The theme of "Risks and Benefits" strongly suggests that subjects have a positive perception that nanotechnology comes with risks and benefits to society. The theme of "Solves Problems" strongly suggests subjects have a positive perception that nanotechnology is governed by society's needs and is used to help solve society's problems. Findings from this study suggest that PBL with web-anchored instruction in nanotechnology had a positive effect on subjects' science conceptual understanding, attitude towards science, and perception of science in society.

Show moreEmployment coaching is essential for performing job duties and for developing and enhancing skills. Coaching in the school setting typically follows the traditional format of pre-conference, observe, and post-conference, where feedback on teaching performance is shared but often delayed. Professional development provides teachers with skills to enhance their teaching practice with little to no follow-up or support. The most effective way to produce change in the school setting is to show the connection between professional development and student performance, and iCoaching can help to bridge the gap. Research shows that effective feedback is immediate, systematic, positive, constructive, and detailed (Scheeler & Lee, 2002). Bug-in-ear (BIE) coaching is a way to provide immediate feedback so correction can be made live, and errors are reduced. iCoaching uses iPods as a BIE device with a coach serving as a remote observer providing coaching prompts or immediate feedback to the teacher to allow the teacher to implement ideas or make corrections immediately. Increasing opportunities to respond (“Increasing Opportunities to Respond,” 2015) is a way to increase academic achievement and on task behavior (Sutherland, Alder, & Gunter, 2003). This study utilized a multiple probe across participants design to investigate the effect of iCoaching on teacher-delivered OTR. Four teacher participants and their students participated in the study, where the teachers completed a teacher preparation session and live iCoaching sessions to increase their OTR. Data were collected on OTR (including the type of OTR), coaching comments, student responses, and student curricular performance. The results indicate that iCoaching was effective in increasing teacher-delivered OTR and increasing student responses and academic performance. Implications for future research are discussed.

Show moreIn this study, DiMaggio and Powell's (1983) institutional model of isomorphic change is hypothesized to explain the changes witnessed in educational organizations with regard to the acceptance, implementation and institutionalization of distance learning. In order to show the power of institutional theory in explaining organizational change over time, a comparative qualitative case study methodology is utilized. Document analysis and interviews are used to explore the utility of this isomorphic change model. Each research question seeks to explore different influences of institutional isomorphism, coercive, normative, and mimetic. DiMaggio and Powell (1983) suggest organizations converge on similar practices and behaviors and appear similar to like organizations over time. The appearance of change toward homogeneity is explored through the isomorphic change theory which indentifies three forces, coercive, normative and mimetic, influential in determining how adopted behaviors and pr actices become isomorphically accepted by the organizational field. Coercive isomorphism stems from political influence and organizational legitimacy, often conveyed through laws, regulations, and accreditation processes (or outside agency requirements); normative isomorphism is associated with professional values; and mimetic isomorphism is copying or mimicking behaviors that is a result of organizational response to uncertainty. By examining the organizational field for the presence of these forces and measuring the extent of these forces at various points in time one is able to explain convergence on regularized practices and institutionalized behaviors, or how an organizational field becomes institutionalized, around a particular idea or practice., The coercive, mimetic, and normative forces present in the field dictate institutionalization and theoretically produce an environment that induces organizational conformity, or homogeneity, through pressure to appear legitimate, competition, mandates associated with funding, and influential professional group and network values.

Show moreThis descriptive study on faculty development centers, diversity, and technology was conducted by distributing e-mail surveys to 484 four-year colleges and graduate institutions accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Responses to the 25-item instrument were submitted electronically into a database and merged with institutional data on state, enrollment, tuition, affiliation, highest degree awarded, and selectivity ranking. Although pedagogical training has always been an integral component of teacher education, disciplinary expertise has generally been the sole prerequisite for college teaching. Most universities offer travel support for faculty to attend professional conferences and provide sabbatical leave. Some academic units organize their own training activities. Consulting specialists may conduct specialized training. An individual or committee may voluntarily coordinate faculty development efforts. Since 1960, an increasing number of campuses have established faculty development centers with their own identities and reporting relationships, staff, budgets, and designated space, often with assistance from federal, state, or foundation funding. Centers focus on classroom instruction (instructional development), on faculty and their needs (faculty development), the overall needs of the institution (organizational development), and/or research. Of 185 respondents, 65 have faculty development centers, 5 have centers devoted to instructional technology, and 27 have active programs without formal centers; most belong to organizations or networks. Most centers have staff, budgets, and dedicated space. Centers are more likely found at large public institutions, report to the chief academic officer, and offer voluntary training to faculty, adjuncts, new faculty, and teaching assistants. Services focused more on andragogy and technology than on diversity. Most have Web sites, limited forms of evaluation, and expansion plans. Eight are women's colleges, 24 are Historically Black Colleges or Universities, and 9 are Hispanic Serving Institutions. Significant differences were found for enrollment, tuition, affiliation, and highest degree awarded and the scope of centers and programs. The study confirmed the value of faculty development centers and programs, the need to increase diversity and technology training, and the importance of evaluation and documentation of the contributions made by faculty development programs to the mission of the institution.

Studies by Wenglinsky (1998) for the Educational Testing Service reported the effective use of technology by classroom teachers has a positive impact on student performance. More recent studies frequently indicate teachers are not being trained to use technology effectively; and consequently, limited integration of technology in the classroom is taking place (Catchings, 2000; Howery, 2001; Johnson, 2002). Ham's assertion in 1999 that very few studies make the process of professional development the object of research remains true today. A literature review of current research revealed commonly recommended professional and governmental guidelines, standards, and principles. Published recommended practices of professional development in technology indicated similar practices in the areas of planning, implementation, and follow up/support. The Staff Development in Technology Survey was sent via the Internet to 200 participants including 56 providers of professional development and 144 receivers. Actual practices as described by providers and receivers were compared with recommended practices from the literature review. An analysis of variances (ANOVA) indicated a significant difference between the responses of the providers and receivers in the areas of planning (p < .02), implementation (p < .01), and follow up/support (p < .01). The providers' mean ratings of perception of the effectiveness of planning (p < .01) and effectiveness of follow up/support (p < .05), was significantly different from the receivers' perceptions. There was no significance between responses regarding the effectiveness of implementation. A Model of Effective Professional Development in Technology, developed from the analysis of the literature reviewed and responses from providers and receivers, provides a foundation for school administrators, faculty, and staff in planning, implementing, and providing follow up/support for professional development in technology. Professional development should take place in a collaborative environment with extensive support and resources available. Administrators, faculty, and staff working together using the model ought to be able to implement effective professional development in technology.

The purpose of this study was threefold: to understand how high school students perceive online math homework, to determine what aspects of online math homework aid and/or hinder student learning, and to improve the student learning experience with online math homework. Through quantitative analysis, the researcher noted that although not all students learned best with online math homework, nearly every student used the online tools provided when assigned online math homework. Through qualitative analysis, the researcher noted that the most commonly mentioned aid for both online math homework and paper math homework was showing your work. The two most commonly mentioned hindrances to learning were guessing or cheating with online math homework and losing your homework with paper math homework. Participants stated that they actually have more opportunities to cheat with online math homework than with paper math homework; these results diverge from the literature, which states that online math homework helps to eliminate cheating. The data suggests that while online resources, such as examples, were a commonly mentioned aid to online math homework, many students indicated that the online resources also prevented them from truly having to think, as they could just follow the online examples step by step. This research study determined that the majority of students did not have a strong inherent like or dislike toward either online or paper math homework. Instead, students often stated that they preferred whichever medium allowed them to earn higher grades or receive more support. Therefore, if students continue to receive the necessary support, they can continue to learn mathematical concepts through the use of both online and paper math homework.

Show moreThe purpose of this quasi-experimental longitudinal study was to investigate the relationship of full-time laptop computer access to student achievement and student attitudes in middle school from the academic years of 1998--1999 through 2000--2001. Two sets of variables were identified in the study. The independent variable was the instructional method having full-time access to laptops or not. The dependent variables were student achievement, and student attitudes. ANOVAs were employed to test the difference between the experimental group and the comparison group. Measures of reading comprehension and math application were determined through scores on the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) for sixth-grade students and the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) for eighth-grade students. A teacher-made pretest/posttest writing assessment score for sixth grade was assessed with the criteria determined in the Florida Writes Program rubric. In addition, students and parents in the experimental group at the end of sixth-grade responded to a survey. As a result of the analysis, the following major findings were identified: (1) Although students in the sixth-grade were provided with full-time laptop computer access during the school year, it did not create a significant impact on student achievement in subject areas of reading comprehension, math application, and writing. (2) Data from the survey suggested that students with full-time laptop computer access during the school year had several advantages regarding student attitudes, motivation, applications of technology for school work, and improved organizational skills. Two conclusions were revealed from this study. First, laptop access did not prove to be the better learning technique over not having laptop access in improving student achievement. There was no significant difference as explained in analysis which found the power was low. Second, the study concludes that laptop access may improve student attitudes. When surveying students regarding the use of laptops, overall, students indicated that when compared to not having laptop access they felt more successful in school, more motivated to learn, their organizational skills were better, and their perceptions toward their test scores had improved. The study recommended that future research be conducted to: (1) Examine principals' participation in professional development activities related to educational technology. (2) Provide teachers with instructional design, delivery, staff development, on-going technical support, and opportunities in the classroom to integrate technology resources daily into the curriculum. (3) Study the effect of instructional uses of laptops and student achievement.

Similarly, studies have shown that the usage of of-the-shelf technology boosts motivation in children diagnosed with ASD while increasing their attention span and ability to interact socially. Embracing perspectives from different fields of study can lead to the development of an effective tool to complement traditional treatment of those with ASD. This thesis documents the re-engineering, extension, and evolu- tion of Ying, an existing web application designed to aid in the learning of autistic children. The original methodology of Ying combines expertise from other research areas including developmental psychology, semantic learning, and computer science. In this work, Ying is modifed to incorporate aspects of traditional treatment, such as Applied Behavior Analysis. Using cutting-edge software technology in areas like voice recognition and mobile device applications, this project aspires to use software engineering approaches and audio-visual interaction with the learner to enhance social behavior and reinforce verbal communication skills in children with ASD, while detecting and storing learning patterns for later study.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to examine students' preferred methods of academic advising services and whether they related to their individual learning styles. The first objective of the study was to determine each participant's learning style. The second objective of the study was to determine which method of academic advising each participant preferred. The third objective of the study was to determine whether a relationship existed between the participants' learning styles and preferred methods of academic advising. Additionally, the moderating effect of gender, ethnicity, college major, high school grade point average (GPA), location, and employment on the relationship was considered. Students' learning styles were measured by the Barsch Learning Style Inventory (BLSI). Academic advising preference and demographic information were gathered through a researcher-designed questionnaire. All students (N=1,184) who completed the Online Advising & Registration System (OARS) were cont acted via e-mail and received a web link to the BLSI and student questionnaire. Data from the students (n=172) who completed the BLSI and student questionnaire were analyzed. Correlation and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the quantitative data. A qualitative analysis of four open-ended survey questions was completed. The results found no relationship between participants' learning styles and their preferred methods of academic advising services. Additionally, gender, ethnicity, college major, high school GPA, location, and employment did not moderate the relationship between participants' learning styles and their preferred methods of academic advising services. The findings suggest that a student's learning style is not associated with his or her preference for type of advising., Furthermore, this lack of relationship did not change as a function of gender, ethnicity, college major, high school GPA, location, and employment.Recommedatations are provided for researchers and practitioners to further contribute to the literature and practice concerning academic advising preference and learning style.

Show moreThis research study investigated factors affecting completion of distance-learning courses at a south Florida community college by analyzing pre-existing and newly collected data on distance-learning students for a seven-year period (1997-2004). Distance-learning instructors were also included in the study. The investigation focused on three distance-learning methodologies---telecourse, live interactive television, and Internet. The study attempted to determine relationship between completion and the variables of gender, age, ethnicity, and degree-seeking status for students; differences in completion rates for students using the different methodologies; level of students' self-directed learning readiness; level of instructor involvement; and level of student and instructor satisfaction. Subjects of the samples of study included 5,004 distance-learning students and 88 distance-learning instructors of a community college located in south Florida. Analysis of pre-existing data resulted in findings concerning gender, ethnicity, age, and degree-seeking status. Findings revealed no significant relationship between gender and completion, by modality or for the overall group, but findings did indicate some significant relationships (though weak because of very small effect sizes) in analyses of other demographic variables. White students tended to be equally completers and non-completers whereas non-whites tended to be non-completers. Findings also showed significant positive correlations between age and completion: As age increased, completion rates increased. Results further revealed a significant relationship between degree-seeking status and completion. More than half of the degree-seeking students tended to complete their courses; fewer than half of the non-degree seeking students tended complete. Also, Learning Preference Assessment statistical results showed no significant relationship between completer status and self-directed learning readiness. Another factor of the study, the level of student satisfaction with distance learning modalities, was inconclusive. The study also included instructor involvement and instructor satisfaction with distance-learning modalities. Findings revealed that, overall, most instructors did not schedule additional time (time not institutionally mandated) to meet or chat with their students but did require students to use specified support services, such as the library and the Center for Personalized Instruction (CPI). A final segment of the survey indicated little difference in instructor satisfaction with an individual distance-learning modality and little difference in satisfaction in comparison to other modalities.
