Abstract/Description

Carotenoid composition, tissue distribution, deposition in the exoskeleton, and assimilation were studied in the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus. Carotenoids identified were: alpha-carotene; beta-carotene; lutein; 'carcinoxanthin'; isocryptoxanthin; echinenenone; canthaxanthin; astaxanthin; and, astaxanthin esters. Tentative identification was made for a-carotene, 8-carotene-monoepoxide, and phoenicoxanthin. The occurrence of 'carcinoxanthin', in high concentration, in antennae and eyestalks,...

The occurrence of 'carcinoxanthin', in high concentration, in antennae and eyestalks, is noted and discussed. Hepatopancreas yields mainly Bcarotene, with more oxidized 'intermediates' and astaxanthin being localized in the hypodermis. Exoskeletal carotenoids, both free and conjugated to protein, were shown to be bound to chitin. Exoskeletal carotenoprotein was shown to contain free astaxanthin as the only carotenoid present. External coloration was analyzed and the underlying pigments identified. Starved crabs with carotenoid-depleted hepatopancreas were shown to assimilate beta-carotene, but not astaxanthin, from test diets. Possible metabolic pathways and functions of carotenoids in Crustacea are discussed.

DECAPOD CRUSTACEANS ASSOCIATED WITH WORM ROCK (PHRAGMATOPOMA LAPIDOSA KINBERG) IN SOUTHEASTERN FLORIDA.

Abstract/Description
-
Decapod communities associated with intertidal and subtidal worm reefs (Phragmatopoma lapidosa) were investigated in March and September, 1973, at four locations along the Florida east coast. Quantitative samples from intertidal reefs yielded few species (23), dominated by the grapsid, Pachygrapsus transversus. Subtidal samples contained 71 species, generally dominated by Synalpheus fritzmuelleri. Qualitative collections yielded additional rare species resulting in a total of 94 species found...

Quantitative samples from intertidal reefs yielded few species (23), dominated by the grapsid, Pachygrapsus transversus. Subtidal samples contained 71 species, generally dominated by Synalpheus fritzmuelleri. Qualitative collections yielded additional rare species resulting in a total of 94 species found inhabit ing the worm reefs. The family Alpheidae contained the greatest number of species (20) followed by the family Majidae (16) and the fa~ily Xanthidae (12). The remaining 16 families were represented by seven or fewer species. Eleven of the 94 species (or 11 .7%) were new continental records, while occurrence of three other species constituted range extensions from the Florida Keys or Florida west coast. A systematic account of each species is given and taxonomic problems are elucidated. The significance of P. lapidosa reefs as a habitat for decapods is discussed.

Responses of hermit crabs to hemolymph from conspecifics and heterospecific crustaceans.

Abstract/Description

Previous studies indicate that hermit crabs may use the blood or hemolymph from dying crabs to locate the soon-to-be-vacated shells. In this study, I determined and characterized the responses of hermit crabs to hemolymph from various crustaceans. Hermit crabs tested included members of the Diogenidae: Dardanus venosus, Clibanarius tricolor, C. antillensis, C. vittatus, and Calcinus tibicen; and Paguridae: Pagurus longicarpus and P. annulipes. In this study, I determined and characterized the responses of hermit crabs to hemolymph from various crustaceans. Hermit crabs tested included members of the Diogenidae: Dardanus venosus, Clibanarius tricolor, C. antillensis, C. vittatus, and Calcinus tibicen; and Paguridae: Pagurus longicarpus and P. annulipes. Test odor sources included the previously mentioned hermit crabs plus seven additional odors, including three non-anomuran crustaceans. Most significant responses to hemolymph were to species within the same family. In several cases, the strongest responses were to conspecifics or congenerics. These results show clearly that hermit crabs in general use chemicals from other hermit crabs as cues for finding new shells. These results also show that the shell a crab occupies influences its response to odors, illustrating the role of context in these interactions.
