It would permit a process designer or manufacturing engineer with no simulation expertise to define the process variables, then run the simulation program. A secondary objective is to combine in one system the key functions required by a manufacturing engineer or manager, such as the operational (real time), statistical, and financial aspects. And also makes those function modules easy to understand and user-friendly. The integrated simulator can use animation to visualize an actual production line. A case study has been developed to verify and validate the work done.

Show moreIn recent years, there has been an exponential increase in container volume shipment within intermodal transportation systems. Container terminals as part of the global port system represent important hubs within this intermodal transportation system. Thus, the need to improve the operational efficiency is the most important issue for container terminals from an economic standpoint. Moreover, intermodal transportation systems, ports and inland transport facilities should all be integrated into one coordinated plan. More specifically, a method to schedule different types of handling equipment in an integrated way within a container terminal is a popular topic for researchers. However, not many researchers have addresses this topic in relationship to the simulation aspect which will test feasible solutions under real container terminal environment parameters. In order to increase the efficiency of operations, the development of mathematical models and algorithms is critical in finding the best feasible solution. The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasible solution to find the proper number of Yard Trailers (YTs) with the minimal cost for the container terminals. This study uses the Dynamic YTs operation's method as a background for modeling. A mathematical model with various constraints related to the integrated operations among the different types of handling equipment is formulated. This model takes into consideration both serving time of quay cranes and yard cranes, and cost reduction strategies by decreasing use of YTs with the specific objective of minimum total cost including utilization of YTs and vessel berthing. In addition, a heuristic algorithm combined with Monte Carlo Method and Brute-Force Search are employed. The early Stage Technique of Monte Carlo method is proposed to generate vast random numbers to replicate simulation for real cases., The Brute-Force Search is used for identifying all potential cases specific to the conditions of this study. Some preliminary numerical test results suggest that this method is good for use in conjunction with simulation of container terminal operation. The expected outcome of this research is a solution to obtain the proper number of YTs for transporting containers with a minimum cost; thus, improving the operational efficiency in a container terminal.

Show moreThis thesis describes a resource discovery technique in mobile ad hoc networks. Resource discovery is technique to search data in among the mobile nodes in the network. The highly dynamic nature of the infrastructure-less ad hoc networks poses new challenges in resource discovery, thus there is a need to for an optimized resource discovery technique. Efficient resource discovery algorithm discovers the resources in a mobile ad-hoc network in an optimized way. As there is no pre-established infrastructure in the network, every node takes its decision in forwarding resources and every node dynamically ranks these resources before disseminating them in the network. Ranking of the resources spreads the data which is of high priority at that instance of time. Ranking avoids the spreads the unwanted or low priority data which will utilize the bandwidth unnecessarily. The efficient resource discovery algorithm also keeps a check that redundant information is not spread in the network with the available bandwidth and the bandwidth is utilized in an optimized manner. We then introduce brokers in the algorithm for a better performance. We present a technique to maintain a constant number of brokers in the network. Our simulations show that, in a network with high density, the efficient resource discovery algorithm gives a better performance than the flooding and rank based broadcast algorithms.

The games rendered on the servers are encoded as video and streamed to mobile devices. Mobile devices gather user input and stream the commands back to the servers to advance game play. With this solution, mobile devices with video playback and network connectivity can become game consoles. In this thesis, we present the design and development of such a system and evaluate the performance and design considerations to maximize the end user gaming experience. A gaming user experience model capable of predicting the user experience for a given gaming session is developed and verified.

Each arithmetic operation is implemented by an active process which is the "task" construct in the Ada language. The computational part of the algorithm is implemented as a wavefront array of computing tasks. These computational arrays are driven by a driver task which coordinates the flow of data into and out of the computing surfaces. If the inter process communications time between tasks is small, then this model shows a potential for speed-up. If this be the case, one may conclude that this model is an appropriate implementation for a linear predictive coding.

The main contribution of this thesis is the design of data management and retrieval schemes useful to the whole AUV community that both simplify the access and treatment of the data collected. This is achieved by the use of a self-describing standard data format (Hierarchical Data Format) and the use of Internet browsers' file download ability. Recent developments in Sun's Java applet technology have been used to provide a user-friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI) so that the user can select data files according to a large number of parameters (what variables have been collected, when and where).

The computer programs are not user-interactive, and the user has to write a separate program to incorporate the various subroutines. The pro6rams are written for use on the HP9835A desktop computer. The component element types discussed are limited to resistors, capacitors, and voltage controlled current sources. Nodal analysis is performed by LU factorization techniques, and sensitivity analysis by the adjoint network approach. Circuit frequency response optimization is presented usiag the Fletcher Powell minimization procedure and quadratic polynomial fitting. A Monte Carlo tolerance analysis routine is developed.

Formulas for calculation of roundoff noise of proposed structures are provided. Two programs which can be used to calculate the roundoff noise of proposed structure are listed in the Appendix. To run the programs, we need only to input the constant coefficients of expanded transfer function. At last, an optimal block realization of separable-in-denominator 2-D filter is discussed and the criterion for the absence of limit cycles for a second-order 2-D block is given.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to examine the effect of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) on the reading skills of emergent readers in kindergarten classes at select Reading First schools in the School District of Palm Beach County, Florida. The reading software analyzed was Destination Reading (Riverdeep, 2001), used during the 2004-2005 school year. Comparisons were made between users of the program and nonusers. Comparisons were also made between English language learners who used or did not use the program, as well as Exceptional Education students who used or did not use it. Another factor analyzed was how teacher attitude toward the computer affected student reading achievement. This was established by survey responses. The measures used to compare treatment and non-treatment schools were the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), which tested letter naming ability, initial sound identification, phoneme segmentation ability, and nonsense word decoding. The Word Recognition and Reading Running Record assessments from the School District of Palm Beach County Reading and Writing Assessment System Grades K-1 protocol booklet tested identification of 25 sight words and ability to read continuous text. Students using Destination Reading (Riverdeep, 2001) did not benefit significantly from use of the program compared to nonusers. Only on the letter-naming measure was there a significant advantage for all students in the sample and the English language learner group. The CAI group scored significantly lower on the initial sound fluency measure. Word Recognition and Reading Running Record assessments showed no significant results. ESE students showed no significant advantage in having had supplemental computer-assisted instruction on any measures. Factorial ANOVAs were used to compare DIBELS scores for effectiveness of the treatment, pre- and posttest comparisons, and interaction of treatment with test scores for the CAI compared with the nonuser group. T distributions were used to analyze data from the Reading Running Record and Word Recognition assessments. There were no significant differences between the CAI and comparison schools on these two measures. Teacher attitude toward computers did not affect students' acquisition of reading skills, as survey responses were in the positive range for all participants.

For these reasons, analysis techniques which provide methods to create clear, flexible systems must be sought. Object oriented analysis is such a technique. This thesis presents the development of an object oriented model for a Manufacturing Resource Planning system (MRPII). It will be shown that the use of objects and object oriented techniques to model complex systems such as MRPII results in system models which are more easily understood and more flexible to change than other more conventional representations. Future research may include the formal design and implementation of the model. The flexibility of the implemented system could then be compared to the level of flexibility of a non-object based system.

Using a single language across all these levels would ensure that the models are consistent and error-free. SystemC is one such language that has the infrastructure for specifying the design at System level, Behavioral level and RT levels of abstraction. This thesis showcases the same using two design examples---Simplex Data Protocol and General Purpose Timer (GPT) peripheral. Coding style and level of detailing at different levels are shows. Process of refining from one level to another is illustrated. GPT peripheral module designed in this thesis work can be further reused as a timer library component in system architectures.

Various cache optimization schemes have been proposed to address the performance, power consumption, and predictability issues. However, currently available solutions are not adequate for real-time embedded systems as they do not address the performance, power consumption, and execution time predictability issues at the same time. Moreover, existing solutions are not suitable for dealing with multi-core architecture issues. In this dissertation, we develop a methodology through cache optimization for real-time embedded systems that can be used to analyze and improve execution time predictability and performance/power ratio at the same time. This methodology is effective for both single-core and multi-core systems. First, we develop a cache modeling and optimization technique for single-core systems to improve performance. Then, we develop a cache modeling and optimization technique for multi-core systems to improve performance/power ratio. We develop a cache locking scheme to improve execution time predictability for real-time systems. We introduce Miss Table (MT) based cache locking scheme with victim cache (VC) to improve predictability and performance/power ratio. MT holds information about memory blocks, which may cause more misses if not locked, to improve cache locking performance., VC temporarily stores the victim blocks from level-1 cache to improve cache hits. In addition, MT is used to improve cache replacement performance and VC is used to improve cache hits by supporting stream buffering. We also develop strategies to generate realistic workload by characterizing applications to simulate cache optimization and cache locking schemes. Popular MPEG4, H.264/AVC, FFT, MI, and DFT applications are used to run the simulation programs. Simulation results show that newly introduced Miss Table based cache locking scheme with victim cache significantly improves the predictability and performance/power ratio. In this work, a reduction of 33% in mean delay per task and a reduction of 41% in total power consumption are achieved by using MT and VCs while locking 25% of level-2 cache size in an 4-core system. It is also observed that execution time predictability can be improved by avoiding more than 50% cache misses while locking one-fourth of the cache size.

We present the IMS and other competing frameworks, we analyze the security issues, we present the topic of Security Patterns, we introduce several new patterns, including the basis for a Generic Network pattern, and we apply these concepts to designing a security architecture for a fictitious 3G operator using IMS for the control core.

Two studies focused on technology intended to assist a total of seven young adults with developmental disabilities to increase independence, decrease the need for paid supports, and improve task performance. Participants completed food preparation tasks in an employee break room, adhering to an industry specific protocol, while using a task application on an iPad that provided audio and video prompts. A multiple baseline across participants was used to show effects of the intervention on task performance and reliance on prompts. Results indicated that using an application on an iPad to video model tasks was effective in improving and maintaining accurate skill performance, while reducing the need for prompts. Participants in both study one and study two demonstrated mastery of task performance using the iPad application. In study one, three of the four participants faded the use of prompts, whereas only one of the three participants demonstrated independence in study two. Implications for future research are discussed.

Additionally, schools are also delivering state-wide assessments like the Florida Comprehension Assessment Test through computer-based testing instead of paper-pencil testing. There is little research to indicate whether computer-based assessments are an effective way to measure student progress. This study investigated the effects of an interactive computer-based reading strategy on student comprehension for both expository and narrative passages. The intervention evaluated students' percentage of learned strategy use and comprehension accuracy for expository computer-based passages. Additionally, the intervention measured whether students generalized the learned strategy when given a paper-pencil narrative passage and whether generalization of strategy use improved comprehension vi accuracy. This study used an A-B-A-B design across participants, with a follow-up phase. The results from the data showed that all students made significant increases in strategy use from baseline to follow-up. Additionally, all the students had an increase in comprehension accuracy from baseline to follow-up for both computer and paper-based passages. All students were able to generalize successfully the strategy use to narrative passages, and improved their comprehension accuracy of narrative passages. The effects of the study suggest the value of teaching students the interactive computer-based reading strategy for students who struggle with passage comprehension.

This thesis introduces three novel web applications with an aim to offer traffic operators, managers, and analysts’ possibility to monitor the congestion, and analyze incidents and signal performance measures. They offer more detailed analysis providing users with insights from different levels and perspectives. The benefit of providing these visualization tools is more efficient estimation of the performance of local networks, thus facilitating the decision making process in case of emergency events.
