Show moreThe N-acyltransferase enzyme (NAT) is responsible for synthesizing N-acyl-phospatidylethanolamines which is the first step in the synthesis of N-acylethanolamines, an important class of lipids that are used by the endocannabinoid system as signaling molecules. A calcium dependent NAT enzyme has been characterized biochemically but has not been cloned. The purpose of this study was to identify NAT enzyme in Caenorhabditis elegans. The strain MGL107 overproduces NAEs and as a result exhibits delayed growth. We have found that 10 of 35 genes with N-acyltransferase activity are able to restore growth of MGL107. Interestingly, acl-10, acl-12, and acl-13 also showed increased mRNA levels in a strain with reduced NAEs, possibly indicating a compensatory mechanism. These data suggests that these three genes could potentially code for the calcium dependent NAT and should be further analyzed biochemically.

It is an ever-growing issue with more slaves now than at any other point in history, totaling to roughly 27 million victims of the Human Trafficking Slave Trade. More specifically, Miami, Florida is the third largest site for human trafficking in the United States. By studying human behavior and targeting portals for slave trade, the redesigned objects will be placed in airports and suspected establishments in our environment. The irony created by the graphics, specifically on site, will capture attention and stir a public concern about human trafficking. Furthermore, it will also provide the audience with the means to take action. Our objective of this research is to find creative solutions through the redesigning of common items, such as traffic signs, and placing them in the environment to raise public awareness.

Show moreThe exotic apple snail Pomacea maculata appears to be gradually extending its range and increasing its density through much of south Florida. As a consequence, there is increasing interest in understanding its life history. One difficulty encountered in studying P. maculata is that it lays large, multilayered clutches of very small eggs that are impossible to count without disaggregating the egg mass; which results in the loss of viability. Using a previously described dis-aggregation technique, we weighed, dis-aggregated, photographed, and counted 70 egg masses of P. maculata collected from various locations in Lake Okeechobee. Using the resulting mass and egg numbers we developed an algorithm that reliably relates clutch mass to the number of eggs in a clutch, allowing the estimation of the number of eggs in a clutch without impacting the eggs’ viability and paving the way for investigations into studies on fecundity, hatching rate, etc.

Utilizing immunocytochemical techniques, TRH containing cells were identified with anti-TRH antibodies. For a positive control, we compared the established approach of examining corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF)-containing neurons with our approach of examining TRH neurons. We found that the images of TRH-containing cells were relatively unclear, implicating a quality problem of anti-TRH antibodies used in this study. Further investigation using in situ mRNA hybridization will likely clarify the involvement of TRH in MDMA toxicity.

In the field of engineering, it is paramount that undergraduates know more than just theory; students are being pressed more and more to have experience in fabrication and design application in the real world. Teaching our future leaders skills applicable to the real world and how to apply these skills in the workplace is an equally important objective of this project. We wish to answer the question of whether or not electric cars are a viable means of transportation from various perspectives such as the consumer, environmental, and business standpoints by analyzing the characteristics of electric cars and their future capabilities. Students will not only participate in research conducted by undergraduate participating students, but also conduct their own research, fabricate their own theories, and benefit the future of STEM.

Show moreWord retrieval often presents a problem for aging populations. The Boston Naming Test (BNT) is a prevalent neuropsychological exam that uses word retrieval to reveal relevant information leading to a diagnosis of cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. This study investigated the effects of age and gender on a confrontation naming test. Confrontation naming was assessed using the Boston Naming Test. The sample included 538 participants (185 males, 383 females) individuals residing in South Florida. Participants were divided into two groups, a high cognitive functioning and a low cognitive functioning group, based on the participant’s scores on the mini mental state examination (MMSE). Results did support the hypothesis that age has a significant effect on confrontational naming test ability in both cognitive groups. Conversely, the anticipation that gender would play a role on performance on the BNT for either group was not supported by the results.

Along with the new visual language we will be implementing, we will be decommissioning the current receptacles to instill one single receptacle for all outdoor uses and a smaller size of that same container for indoor environments. Show morePomacea maculata is invading Florida’s freshwater ecosystems. P. maculata is potentially competing with native Pomacea paludosa. However very little work has looked at the consumption behavior to Vallisneria americana. V. Americana, a restoration plant used by resource managers provides important habitat to nursery species. This study examines P. maculata and P. paludosa’s rate of physical, herbivory, and total damage on V. americana. Our results show P. maculata and P. paludosa demonstrate an average rate of physical damage of 2.5 cm/hr and 1.2 cm/hr, herbivory rates of 1.8 cm/hr and 0.2 cm/hr and total physical damage rates of 4.2 cm/hr and 1.4 cm/hr respectively; and with t-values of 0.180, 0.006, and 0.024 respectively. This study illustrates P. maculata herbivory is significantly greater compared to P. paludosa herbivory, and total damage rates but not physical damage. Resource managers need to consider these higher rates when planning to use V. Americana.

The mail collection at these mailboxes is projected to drop even more in the coming years. This project's objective is to repurpose the decommissioned mailboxes into The Official Shredding System (TOSS). TOSS will be a publicly accessible shredding service located at official USPS locations to ensure security. TOSS will allow people to destroy sensitive documents and mail with personal information in a secure setting. The shredded documents will ultimately be recycled through the current USPS recycling system. The goal and research of the project is to demonstrate how interdisciplinary studies of graphic design and engineering can work together to address and solve social problems. The result of this project will be communicated in a concept manual.

Show moreWater Pollution is a serious issue in South Florida’s coastal waters with runoff being a major concern. Fertilizers are washed off lawns and golf courses and into storm drains and dumped into the intracoastal waters. This runoff causes change in water chemistry due to the high level of nutrients. This research examines the relationship between feeder canals and nutrient levels in South Florida’s intracoastal waterways. Water samples will be collected from two sites, one with many feeder canals and one with no feeder canals. Nutrient levels from these sites will be measured at three different tide levels, high tide, low tide and slack tide. A comparison of the results between sites and type of tide will be done to determine if the presence of feeder canals influences the levels of nutrients in the surrounding intracoastal waters.
