In every case, one has stemmed from the other. I want to translate the visual arts into writing, which includes the visual art of imagination because images are my natural language. These verses are an attempt at intermixing the categories (language and image), transferring one category into the other and vise versa to make the language act as a painting would; a painting with occasional narration.

Although 2 Vietnams serves as a documentary-style account of the many Vietnams that exist and confront our American memory of Vietnam, each chapter contains social narratives that connect to each other forming larger, subtler narratives. "East-West Documentation" follows a fictional writer's experience living in Vietnam, conducting interviews and reading articles. "Vietnam in the Twilight-Hour" strings narrative poetry together with titles ranging from "Neocolonialism," "Love in Notations," to "SocialPolygrams." In addition to these poetic narratives are photographs that tell snapshot stories. "Correspondence" contains fictions such as "Think and It Will Happen," "StoryOptics," and "Flame of Life." Lastly, "Confessional Archives" contains images and non-fictional stories from veterans, both Vietnamese and American.

Sixty-seven Brazilian parents participated in an online/print questionnaire study. The results show that parents strongly support bilingual education and the development of bilingualism. An overwhelming majority of parents strongly encourage the use of Portuguese in the Brazilian homes. However, a discrepancy was found between parents' expectations and actual practices for their children's biliterate development. The majority of parents encourage the development of their children's speaking skills in Portuguese, but only few parents have strategies to develop their children's literacy in Portuguese. The lack of print-media in the heritage language in the home shows that parents look to formal education to fulfill their expectations in their children's biliteracy.

Show moreStyle development in painting is an important aspect in the maturation of the artist. In the propulsive theory, inspiration and critical control dictate the development of the work of art. In the finalistic theory, the final image is cognated in pre-production and dictates the work. Emphasis on style development is necessary in the college art studio. It is the single most important aspect in personal growth and success. Influences on style development include: a consistency in the work, the physical act of painting, media, psychological integration with personal expression, societal or technological stimuli, personality, and originality. A program to foster style development stresses a professional association between student and instructor where roles are defined, and freedom in the studio exists. Students write contracts to determine objectives and projects. Galleries and alternative spaces provide additional areas for expression. The program is complemented by indivualized readings, peer discussions, critiques, and written evaluations.

Increased awareness of color and its uses also have implications which affect those outside the realm of art education. This issue was first explored by a search into the foundations of color meaning, i.e., factors which influence views on color. How color is used in painting was categorized into five main modes which include the naturaluse of color, heraldic, harmonic, pure, and spiritual. Instances of color usage were f ound in the works of selected modern painters known as colorists. A dimension of increased awareness of color was demonstrated through the use of a color survey. This survey required individuals to express their feelings towards specific colors. The implications these findings have for teaching the art process were discussed. An effective program would include a dynamic interaction between knowledge, personal exploration, and communication between instructor and student.

Traditionally, an individual or small group of individuals underwrote the shortfall. Today, however, no individual or small group can afford to underwrite these massive deficits, and organizations must go to the appropriate "capital" markets for funding. These "capital" markets--individuals, foundations, corporations, and governments--now provide well over half of the funding for not-for-profit opera, symphony, ballet, and theatre companies, and the percentage rises each year. For the performing arts to survive, arts administrators must increase the amount of support from present contributors and find new sources of funding at a time when revisions in the IRS Tax Code conspire to discourage giving.

The question guiding the study was: What is the experience of creating visual art for a nurse? The aim of this descriptive study was to discover what is the nature of the experience of creating visual art as an aspect of nursing care from a nurse's perspective. Using van Manen's phenomenological approach, a description of the experience of creating visual art with patients occurred. Five essential themes emerged and express this experience. The unity of meaning for the experience is portrayed as A Healing Portrait of the Soul's Journey in Compassionate, Cocreative Relationships of Openness, Human Connectedness and Transformation. Implications for nursing inquiry, practice, and education are discussed.

Show moreThis thesis is in three parts. In the first, the cultural economics literature which concerns the labor market for musicians is reviewed and its major theoretical and empirical points are examined. The second part begins by briefly surveying the history and main topics in game theory, providing sufficient background for an understanding of the simplified Rubinstein-Stahl bargaining model, which is then described. The third part applies this model to the process by which concert fees are settled upon, and leads to a number of conclusions. Among these are that subjective discount rates reflect bargaining power in the situation described, and that these discount rates are affected by the notorieties of the parties involved.

The Cotzumalguapa Nuclear Zone is located on the Pacific slope of Guatemala. A portion of the carved stone monuments associated with this zone exhibits a unique combination of botanical symbols as a concomitant to central portrait figuration. This botanical style, found elsewhere in Mesoamerica, includes leaf, flower, fruit, and complex tabbed speech scroll/vine motifs intertwined with other non-botanical symbols. The resulting style can be interpreted as an "envisioned form" of symbolic...

The issues that surround media coverage of court cases and the increasing use of videotaped material, as evidence is the focus of this thesis. The electronic media's interest in legal matters has opened a debate over the principles a free press and a fair trial. This work researches the history of cameras in the courtroom and discusses how trials have become a viable and profitable form of entertainment. It will cite cases and studies that provide evidence as to the negative and positive effects that cameras have on trial participants and discuss how those who work in the law field view this information. Using the historical background of cameras in the courtroom, and examining some recent cases that have been heavily publicized, this thesis will demonstrate how the relationship between the electronic media and the courtroom has become an on-going occurrence which has made them virtually inseparable.

Although the work of women artists has been widely discussed within feminist scholarship from a Euro-American perspective, there is currently little published discourse on the visual art produced by Third-World women within the context of postcolonial and Black feminist theories. This study explores the hypothesis that using the lens of postcolonial and Black feminist theories to examine the work of women artists situated in a Third World environment may identify signifiers of women's agency...
