Show moreRural West Virginia has a very high percentage of older adults. The age-related disease of Alzheimer’s threatens the health of older Appalachians, yet research on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in this population is scarce. In order to improve screening rates for cognitive impairment, Appalachians need to understand their vulnerability. The first step would be to assess their knowledge about AD but a suitable AD knowledge test has not been developed. The purpose of this study was to test the reliability and validity of a new measure of knowledge about AD that is culturally congruent, and to examine factors that may predict AD knowledge in this rural population. A correlational descriptive study was conducted with 240 participants from four samples of older adults in south central rural Appalachian West Virginia using surveys and face-to-face interviews. Results from tests for stability, reliability including Rasch modeling, discrimination and point biserial indices, and concurrent, divergent, and construct validity were favorable. Findings were that although more diversity in test item difficulty is needed, the test discriminated well between persons with higher and lower levels of education [F(2, 226) = 170.51, p = .001]. Using multiple regression, the predictors of AD knowledge included caregiver status, miles from a healthcare provider, gender, and education; (R2=.05, F(4,187) = 2.65, p =. 04). Only years of education accounted for a significant proportion of unique variance in predicting the total BKAD score (t = 2.14, p =. 03). Implications include the need for further tool refinement, testing for health literacy, coordination with recent statewide efforts to educate the public regarding AD, and community based participatory research in designing culturally effective education programs that will ultimately increase screening and detection of Alzheimer’s disease in rural populations.

The modal parameters and mode shapes were determined for the first six diametral modes, the first concentric mode, and the first rigid body shaft mode. The disc consisted of a circular aluminum plate with eight equally and symmetrically spaced radial cutters on one face of the disc and eight equally spaced peripheral cutters located on the rim of the disc midway between the angular locations of the radial cutters. All cutters were of tool steel. The safe area of operation is determined to be between 3000 rpm and 3600 rpm. The experimental setup and procedure Is described in detail with particular emphasis on validation of assumptions required for the analytical approaches used in calculating the modal data.

I hypothesize that men's partner-directed insults are designed to retain their longterm mate and, therefore, that men's use of partner-directed insults will covary with other mate retention behaviors. Using the Mate Retention Inventory and the Partner-Directed Insults Scale, I conducted two studies to test this hypothesis. Study 1 included 245 men who reported their mate retention behaviors and partner-directed insults. Correlations and multiple regression analyses documented the predicted relationships between men's partner-directed insults and mate retention behaviors. Study 2 included 372 women who reported their partner's mate retention behaviors and insults that their partner directed at them. The results replicated the results of Study 1. Discussion highlights future directions for investigating the relationships between men's partner-directed insults and mate retention behaviors.

A governing equation for potential attenuation along a pipeline cathodically protected by identical, evenly-spaced, spherical anodes is developed. The numerical solution, obtained using a coordinate based mapping (CoMB) finite difference method (FDM), can be used to predict the potential profile of a pipeline. Show moreA governing equation for potential attenuation along a pipeline cathodically protected by identical, evenly-spaced, spherical anodes is developed. The numerical solution, obtained using a coordinate based mapping (CoMB) finite difference method (FDM), can be used to predict the potential profile of a pipeline. In addition, a modified version of Ohm's Law is developed to provide an improved approach to design of pipeline CP systems. Both approaches address anode-electrolyte, coating-polarization, and metallic path resistance, but the latter neglects to address the potential gradient associated with the one-dimensional nature of pipelines. These two approaches were compared to results from existing potential prediction methods and Boundary Element Methods (BEM). Furthermore, a procedure was developed to calculate the resistance of rectangular conductor arrays. This procedure was utilized to calculate the resistance of an anode sled. Combination of the first principles based equation and the rectangular array resistance procedure allows one to predict the potential profile for a pipeline protected by identical, evenly-spaced, anode sleds.

In order to investigate the environmental cracking tendency of prestressing steel tendons under cathodically polarized conditions, a series of slow strain rate tests were conducted using smooth and notched specimens in simulated concrete porewater environments. Applied potential was varied from -0.500 V to -1.500 V(SCE) at intervals of 0.200 V, and the pH range was 8.0 to 12.5. Show moreIn order to investigate the environmental cracking tendency of prestressing steel tendons under cathodically polarized conditions, a series of slow strain rate tests were conducted using smooth and notched specimens in simulated concrete porewater environments. Applied potential was varied from -0.500 V to -1.500 V(SCE) at intervals of 0.200 V, and the pH range was 8.0 to 12.5. Based on the test results presented in terms of time-to-failure, reduction in crosssectional area and load at failure, potential regimes for susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement in saturated Ca(OH)2 solution were identified. SEM analyses performed for both notched and smooth specimens tested at -0.700 V and -1.300 V in saturated Ca(OH)2 solution showed that different fracture mechanisms operate at these two potentials. The cracking processes have been explained based on the test results and SEM analyses. Based upon the data obtained, the steel showed higher resistance to environmental cracking at pH 9.8 and 8.0 than for 12.5. The applicability of the results to cathodic protection of prestressed steel in concrete is discussed.

Show moreProper application of matrix perturbation theory to the structural modification of vibrating systems yields accurate results without resolving the eigenvalue problem. For this reason it seems that the method may require less computer time and cost in performing iterative type design work. This thesis investigates the application of first-order perturbation techniques to a torsional shaft system subject to viscoelastic damping treatment modifications. The modifications are of general form in that the coating length and thickness are not restricted. Large modifications are built up by a series of small first-order perturbations. In addition to developing a better understanding of the usefulness of this application of perturbation theory, the goal of this paper is also to understand the nonproportional damping effects of partial viscoelastic coatings.

Data collection and analysis is accomplished for the shipping industry of Tampa Bay, Florida. Historical data and cargo projection are used to develop the expected shipping traffic density and distribution for the year 2000. An overview of a computer model that simulates the shipping traffic and accounts for delays due to channel width is presented. A sensitivity analysis performed on the model to determine the effect each input variable has on shipping delays. The results are presented in the form of shipping delay curves for seven types of vessels over a range of channel widths.
