This study examined the effect of acute aerobic exercise on plasma calprotectin response in obese and normal-weight subjects and its relationship with inflammatory cytokine (IL-6). All subjects (11 obese and 10 normal-weight) performed 30 minutes of treadmill exercise at 75% maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). Blood samples were collected prior to, immediately following exercise, and one hour after exercise. Our results showed higher baseline levels of calprotectin in obese subjects than normal-weight subjects. While acute aerobic exercise increased an elevation in calprotectin and IL-6, no difference was found between two groups. Furthermore, a positive relationship was observed between calprotectin area-under-the curve “with respect to increase” (AUCi) and IL-6 AUCi, even after controlling for cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max). Our results support previous finding that IL-6 may potentially regulate calprotectin expression in skeletal muscle during exercise.

The survey contained 20 questions with a cover letter explaining the purpose of the study and an Internet address to access the survey on line. Chi square analysis revealed that dietitians without an exercise/fitness certification were still likely to recommend exercise to their clients. In fact, although 3% of the sample was certified, 81% of the sample were likely to recommend exercise to their clients. The addition of exercise prescription to the dietetics education would benefit both the client and the dietitian.

This has been attributed to increased neuromotoric efficiency, rather than peripheral muscular hypertrophy. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a short-term isokinetic training regimen on limb velocity. Sixty subjects volunteered to participate and were randomly assigned to one of three groups; control (10 males, 10 females), slow (10 males, 10 females) and fast (10 males, 10 females). Each group was pre-tested by performing five repetitions of concentric/concentric knee extension/flexion movements at 60 and 240 d/s on a Kin-Com isokinetic dynamometer. The slow (60 d/s) and fast (240 d/s) groups then completed two days of training (separated by 48--72 hours) consisting of three sets of eight repetitions while the control group did not train. All groups were post-tested at 7--9 days after the pre-test. Data were collected from the middle three repetitions at 1000 Hz and separated into three velocity ROM phases of acceleration (ACCROM), load range (LR) and deceleration (DCCROM) along with peak force. Four univariate (ACCROM, LR, DCCROM & Force) four-way (2 velocities x 2 genders x 2 times x 3 groups) mixed factorial ANOVA's were performed to analyze the data. Results demonstrated significant decreases in ACCROM and increases in LR between pre and post-tests for the slow group at the slow velocity (ACCROM-1.25 +/- .04 deg vs 1.08 +/- .03 deg; LR-74.80 +/- .11 deg vs 75.35 +/- .09 deg) and for the fast group at the fast velocity (ACCROM-14.24 +/- .33 deg vs 13.59 +/- .29 deg; LR-39.73 +/- .32 deg vs 40.59 +/- .25 deg). Force and DCCROM exhibited no significant differences between testing days for any group. These results collectively point to short-term isokinetic training resulting in velocity specific increased limb velocity. These acute improvements may be explained as the result of neural adaptations, such as increased motor unit recruitment or firing rate, rather than hypertrophic responses due to the relatively short duration of the training stimulus. Furthermore, these accelerative increases produce a more rapid rate of force development which may be important in activities necessitating explosive movement, including sporting events requiring power.

BMI was determined through measurement of height and weight. Results. Pearson correlations revealed no relationship between commuting time and/or distance and BMI, and dietary and exercise behaviors. However, total meals eaten out the week prior and number of meals obtained from any away-from-home food vendors was related to total, saturated, and percent fat in the diet, as well as cholesterol. Conclusion. Commuting distance nor time were related to BMI, dietary or exercise behaviors. Regardless of commuting behaviors, better dietary behaviors should be recommended among college students.

To test this hypothesis, two variations (i.e. foot articulation vs. non-articulation) of a simulated aerobic dance movement (i.e. marching in place) were performed by college students enrolled in fitness classes at FAU. Following a separate day to determine VO2 max, all subjects participated in two randomized test sessions (24-48 hrs apart). One session required the subjects to march (non-articulation) to music, taught via videotape, while their heart rate and oxygen consumption were measured. In another session, a foot articulation method was taught to all subjects, using the same marching task originally performed under the non-articulation condition. Articulation HR (114 $\pm$.7 bpm) and VO2 (11.11 $\pm$.142 ml/kg/min) were significantly (p $<$.05) higher than the non-articulation HR (108 $\pm$.7 bpm) and VO2 (9.98 $\pm$.132 ml/kg/min). The results show that articulated marching produced a greater exercise intensity than non-articulated marching.

Ten subjects (4 males and 6 females, age 29.3 ± 5.4 yrs, ht 1.71 ± 0.10 m, wt 71.9 ± 12.9 kg) volunteered to participate in the seated vs. prone investigation and nine different subjects (4 males and 5 females, age 29.5 ± 6.9 yrs, ht 1.72 ± 0.09 m, wt 69.0 ± 13.8 kg) volunteered to participate in the seated vs. supine study. Each subject completed 3 maximal reciprocal concentric/concentric repetitions of dominant knee extension/flexion on a Biodex System 2 isokinetic dynamometer at 60, 120, 180, 240 and 360 deg·sec-1 in the supine or prone and seated positions. Repeated measures ANOVA revealed that only seated flexion at 360 deg·sec-1 (57.6 ± 1.7 degrees) elicited significantly (p < 0.05) greater LR than prone (49.2 ± 2.8 degrees). No significant differences in LR extension or flexion existed at any velocity between the supine vs. seated positions. ANOVA also demonstrated differences between seated vs. prone torque, work and power at most velocities while there was no difference between seated vs. supine. LR is the only phase of an isokinetic repetition where quantifiable resistance is maintained and this data appears to support that it may not be position-dependent but position may alter traditional performance variables.

Each lasted 30 seconds at 200% of her peak power output with HR, RPE, and BLa measured at the end of each trial. Results: No significant difference was observed between conditions for any metabolic or perceptual measure across workloads while perceived muscle soreness at 24 hours trended towards significance (p=.067). Conclusion: Compression socks did not significantly alter metabolic or perceptual responses to cycling.

Twenty-four 3xTg-AD mice were randomly assigned to either an aerobic (AT, n=8), resistance (RT, n=8), or control (CNT, n=8) group. Intervention groups underwent 9 weeks of exercise training. Motor behavior and grip strength were measured pre- and post- intervention. Our results showed a significant increase in hippocampal BDNF expression in AT mice after a 9-week intervention. Further, AT mice were found to have higher concentrations of IGF-I, and improved motor behavior when compared to RT and CNT. No significant differences were observed in IGF-I concentration between RT and other groups. RT improved grip strength after nine weeks of training. These findings support the use of AT and RT as a tool to improve comorbidities found in Alzheimer’s disease.

Serum BDNF and lactate were determined prior, during, and following both protocols. RESULTS: BDNF levels (pg/mL) increased from baseline during HIE and MCE (p<.05). The BDNF response to HIE correlated with lactate for area under the curve (AUC) (r=0.901; P<0.05). CONCLUSION: HIE is an effective alternative to MCE at increasing BDNF. Additionally, lactate may act as a measure of intensity or a mediator of the BDNF response to exercise.

Further, significant correlations were found between BMI and waist circumference (r= .91, P< 0.001), WHR (r= .51, P= 0.002) and Pre-to-RlH ratio (r=0.58, P=0.008). Young obese subject's BDNF response to maximal exercise was consistent with previous studies. Post-exercise BDNF expressed in PBMCs were significantly higher than rest suggesting immunological-neuroprotective interactions in the CNS.
