Show moreSoftware reuse has been looked upon in recent years as a promising mechanism for achieving increased levels of software quality and productivity within an organization. A form of software reuse which has been gaining in popularity is the use of design patterns. Design patterns are a higher level of abstraction than source code and are proving to be a valuable resource for both software developers and new hires within a company. This thesis develops the idea of applying design patterns to the Computer Aided Design (CAD) software development environment. The benefits and costs associated with implementing a software reuse strategy are explained and the reasoning for developing design patterns is given. Design patterns are then described in detail and a potential method for applying design patterns within the CAD environment is demonstrated through the development of a CAD design pattern catalog.

As the demand for higher data rates increases over the wireless channels, this thesis studies the effect of the random errors over the different types of RLP frame formats and also the performance of the NAK based ARQ mechanism used in these conditions. The simulation provides with the overall characteristics of the throughput and the mean extra delay in terms of realistic environment parameters like Eb/No and probability of packet error (Pe), based on the channel conditions.

In such a scenario, it is imperative that designer are aware of the performance characteristics of several Bluetooth(TM) networks operating within the same area. There are several issues that need consideration like security, self-interference and adjacent network interference. The objective of this research is to evaluate the performance of a Bluetooth(TM) network in the presence of self-interference which included adjacent and co-channel interference from neighboring Bluetooth(TM) networks. Specific to the above topics of interest, the following research tasks are performed: (1) The magnitude of self-interference problem in Bluetooth(TM) networks. (2) The system throughput is evaluated by varying duty cycles of the various networks. (3) The pathloss difference is measured between the desired and the interfering device.

Show moreAccurately predicting the quality of software is a major problem in any software development project. Software engineers develop models that provide early estimates of quality metrics which allow them to take action against emerging quality problems. Most often the predictive models are based upon multiple regression analysis which become unstable when certain data assumptions are not met. Since neural networks require no data assumptions, they are more appropriate for predicting software quality. This study proposes an improved neural network architecture that significantly outperforms multiple regression and other neural network attempts at modeling software quality. This is demonstrated by applying this approach to several large commercial software systems. After developing neural network models, we develop regression models on the same data. We find that the neural network models surpass the regression models in terms of predictive quality on the data sets considered.

Show moreThere is a mushrooming demand for battery operated applications that require intensive computation in portable environments. This has motivated the research and development of techniques that reduce power in CMOS digital circuits while maintaining their computational throughput. The two essentials to achieve a low power design are miniaturization and long battery life. Lowering the supply voltage is one of the most effective ways to achieve low-power performance as power dissipation in digital CMOS circuits is approximately proportional to the square of supply voltage. The basic idea behind this thesis is that it proposes new designs of transfer gate based logical circuits, which use lower supply voltage and less number of transistors than the conventional designs. This work evaluates the obtained results from the proposed designs of the low-power ALU with that from the standard CMOS, other low power designs namely, Wang's XOR, XNOR and Inverter based gates. It was observed that the proposed designs perform better in terms of power consumption than the standard CMOS designs, and the other low power designs mentioned above.

In this thesis a unique translational and rotational invariant feature set has been developed. These extracted feature data, unlike traditional systems which include the extracted data into payload, is used for device connection by generating the 128 bit PIN. The system performance is analyzed using the pairing PIN for inter-sample and intra-sample recognition. To validate the stability of the system the performance is analyzed with external samples which are not a part of the internal database.

Show moreThe last decade has seen a surge in demand for cellular and WLAN networks. With the introduction of Voice Over IP, cellular companies are looking at WLAN-Cellular integrated networks that shall provide users with economical voice and data services. These networks shall be complimentary to the existing cellular networks. A lot of money is spent in registering and authenticating new users, since they are separately authenticated and registered on the WLAN and Cellular domains. This leads to extra costs for the company. Thus for the integrated networks to have an impact on the market some issues such as simpler authentication and registration must be resolved. Therefore we propose a new inter-working model that shall addresses the authentication and registration problem for an integrated network for voice and data. The Single authentication system of the new inter-working model, shall authenticate the user in an integrated network using the SIM credentials, this authentication shall be valid for both voice and data. Also registration costs will be saved by preventing separate registration of users in the WLAN and Cellular domain.

It has become increasingly important for a cellular network provider to provide the customers with the clearest possible end-to-end speech during a call. However, this perceptually motivated QoS is hard to measure. While the main goal of this research has been on the modeling of the perceptual audio quality, this thesis focuses on the discovery of procedures for collecting audio and diagnostic data, the evaluation of the captured audio, and the mapping and visualization of the diagnostic and audio related data. The correct application of these modified procedures should increase the productivity of the drive test team as well as provides a platform for the accurate assessment of the data collected.

The proposed model considers limited buffer capacity which can adversely impact the switching performance of ATM switching networks. The proposed ANN based approach takes advantage of the favorable control characteristics of neural networks such as high adaptability and high speed collective computing power for effective buffer utilization. The proposed model uses complete sharing buffer allocation strategy and enhances its performance for high traffic loads by regulating the buffer allocation process dynamically via a neural network based controller. In this study, we considered the buffer allocation problem in the context of routing optimization in ATM networks. The modular structure of the proposed model separates the buffer allocation from the actual routing of ATM cells through the switching fabric and allows adaptation of the neural control for routing to different switching structures. The influence of limited buffer capacity, routing conflicts, statistical correlation between arriving ATM cells and cell burst length on ATM switching performance are analyzed and illustrated through computer simulation.

This thesis introduces a new algorithm that applies some of the best characteristics of GMDH to neural network design and develops a Pruning based Regenerated Network by discarding the neurons in a layer which don't contribute for the creation of neurons in next layer. Unlike other conventional algorithms, which generate a network which is a black box, the new algorithm provides visualization of the network displaying all the neurons in the network. The algorithm is general enough that it will accept any number of inputs and any sized training set. To show the flexibility of the Pruning based Regenerated Network, this algorithm is used to analyze different combinations of drugs and determine which pathways in these networks interact and determine the combination of drugs that take advantage of these interactions to maximize a desired effect on genes.

The object of this thesis is to propose the use of the classic XOR problem for the performance evaluation of the backpropagation algorithm, with some variations on the input data sets. This thesis covers background work in this area and discusses the results obtained by other researchers. A series of test cases are then developed and run to perform the performance analysis of the backpropagation algorithm. As the performance of the networks depends strongly on the inputs, the effect of variation of the design parameters for the networks are evaluated and discussed.

The behavior of the neural network algorithm for different switching network configurations and varying traffic patterns were investigated. The effect of initial state of the neural network and heuristic improvements to the algorithm is provided. A comparative analysis of the neural network path selection algorithm against a sequential search method is also given.

Show moreArtificial Neural Networks have been widely used for obtaining solutions for combinational optimization problems. Traveling Salesman problem is a well known nonlinear combinational optimization problem. In Traveling Salesman problem, a fixed number of cities is given. An optimal tour of all these cities is required such that each city is visited only once and the total tour distance to be covered has to be minimized. Hopfield Networks have been applied for generating an optimal solution. However there are certain factors which result in instability and local optimization of Hopfield Networks. In such cases the solutions obtained may not be optimal and feasible. In this thesis, the application of the K-Means algorithm is combined with the Hopfield Networks to generate more stable and optimum solutions to traveling salesperson problem.

The back-propagation algorithm is used to train the network to recognize the pattern of deterioration of bridges and use this knowledge in predicting the future condition rating of a bridge. The various factors which influence the deterioration rate are considered as input to the system. The model then predicts the condition rating of the three major sub-components of a bridge viz. the deck, sub-structure and the super-structure. Fuzzy logic is used to evaluate the overall condition rating of the bridge using the condition rating of the components. To demonstrate the superiority of the neural network model over the traditional models, the history of the deterioration rates for the components were also considered in the prediction of their future condition. The proposed system is versatile and can be easily extended to include other parameters and updated from time to time without much effort.

The noisy environment tests the TMNN forecaster for its robustness. The primary goal of this research is to develop a simulation software based on TMNN Algorithm for forecasting stock market index values. The main inputs are previous day's closing values and the output is predicted closing index.
