This thesis presents a methodology of Comparative Analysis of different Design for Assembly (DFA) Methods. Three DFA methods, Boothroyd's Design for Assembly, Design for Assembly Guidelines and Value Analysis are compared. A "Select DFA Software," is developed using Turbo C++, which would enable a product designer to make a comparative analysis of different DFA methods from which the designer can chose from. In using the Software the designer is not required to know in detail the different DFA methods. Responses to, easy to understand factors that affect the selection of a DFA method enables the designer to use the Software meaningfully. Two case studies are conducted for application of the DFA Software and the three different DFA methods.

In this research author focuses on the computerization opportunities that are unique in maintaining smooth storage and retrieval operations and recouping a controlled inventory status of a warehouse system. The main objective in this research is to define how layout decisions can both depend on warehouse's operations and effect inventory control decisions of a warehouse system. Author had defined, designed and implemented a simulated warehousing system using SIMAN. In particular, author uses simulation modeling as an approach to analyze layout design and operations of a warehouse system. Also, author had developed a database management systems software application using dBase IV. This relational database is used to dynamically forecast inventory level. A case study is used as a test bed to verify and validate the work done.

Show moreMany quality control problems are multivariate in nature since multiple process or product variables are measured and monitored in modern industry. Occasionally a multiple population, multi-variable scenario is encountered in parallel line manufacturing system. This work deals with the analysis of such system using multivariate techniques such as Canonical Analysis, MANOVA and Mahalanobis Distance. Using such techniques, the significant differences between the populations and the magnitude and directions of the variations within and between the populations were determined. Also, elimination/reduction of such variations using multivariate techniques led to a drastic improvement of the production system. A methodology for application of such multivariate techniques for the purpose of quality assurance and improvement was developed here. The application of this methodology was performed on a pager production line and the results obtained show the benefits and the feasibility of the use of multivariate techniques for on-line monitoring and quality control.

This device is a miniature integrated compact form of both audio and silent alerts which uses less than 8 mA current; desirable to be used in equipments with very small power sources. A new ergonomic study was conducted in comprehending the minimum acceptable shake and frequency on human wrist. The complete Piezo-bender structure, its driving format, and its vibration has been modeled accurately to obtain an optimum geometry design for the best possible shake, satisfying all constraints.

Relational database and SQL are the ultimate choice for managing data like inventory and scheduling. In this thesis a computer aided production and inventory control application is developed using dBase IV version 2.0 from Borland International Inc. Salam Sons, a plastic molding firm in Pakistan is used as a test bed for the application. But with little modification it can be used in any production environment. SQL is used in most of the programming which makes it highly portable among different DBMS's and hardware systems. Development of the application, its corresponding computer programs, and literature survey are discussed in this thesis.

Show moreThe main objective of this research is the development of a model that combines reliability engineering analysis with cost accounting techniques, for the automation of maintenance data analysis. A maintenance engineer will be able to estimate the time to schedule the next preventive maintenance, for any repairable system under consideration before failure occurs. The model performs replacement analysis between the system and similar equipment in order to select an alternative based on the reliability and maintenance history. This work develops the handling of the mathematical procedures and the analysis of statistical tests. A case study to apply the developed model uses the automotive environment. Because of the integration of the reliability and cost analysis under the same computer based model, a maintenance plan is derived considering the failure history of the equipment.

Show moreDistribution centers and warehouses are becoming more and more dependent on advanced computer technologies to establish and maintain competitiveness in a global economy. Neural network represent a new technology with a wide scope of potential warehouses applications, ranging from planning and forecasting to overall performance. In this dissertation, numerous results are showing increases in warehouse performance, when using neural network technology. The neural network system is used as a forecasting tool. It is then compared to time series forecasting analysis. The comparison process is designed to increase the warehouse performance understudy. At the end of this process, the results are forecasting variables needed to eventually increase warehouse performance and efficiency. Initially, neural networks along with time series are used to make the forecast on inventory control. Then the following step is to let different neural network modules perform the forecasting analysis on other management operations like inventory adjustments, accuracy and turnover, customer complaints and labor productivity for any distribution center or warehouse. The concept of benchmarking is also used, in order to provide tools which will help warehouse management determining performance levels for each subcomponent of the warehouse operations, and consequently the overall performance of the warehouse or distributor center taken into consideration after feeding in the appropriate data to the system.

Reliability and risk assessment play an important role in product design, development and production. In mass production items, data is abundant and testing in product development and certification is usually thorough. Show moreReliability and risk assessment play an important role in product design, development and production. In mass production items, data is abundant and testing in product development and certification is usually thorough. In contrast, for nonparametric applications, product cost is high, there is limited production and the product is often used only once and discarded. In this type of manufacturing, data is usually limited because of the cost of testing. This makes reliability and risk assessments a difficult task. To circumvent this shortfall in data and its analysis, it is the intent of this paper to provide an alternative approach to models for reliability and risk analysis. This was accomplished by first surveying existing literature and models; then, approaching the problem with a set of block diagrams for each of the required analyses. Additionally, a full set of current models and failure analysis tools were also incorporated. With these tools the proposed methodology was demonstrated in case studies. These studies provided the validation for the methodology presented.

Show moreImproving the quality of a product and manufacturing processes at a low cost is an economic and technological challenge which quality engineers and researches must contend with. In general, the quality of products and their cost are the main concerns for manufactures. This is because improving quality is very crucial for staying competitive and improving the organization's market position. However, some difficulty of finding where the standard of good quality is still remains. Customers' satisfaction is a key for setting up the quality target. One possible solution is to develop control limits, which are the limits for indicating the area of nonconforming product on the basis of minimizing the total cost or loss to the customer as well as to the manufacturer. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation is to develop an effective tool to improve a high quality of product while maintaining a minimum cost.

It would permit a process designer or manufacturing engineer with no simulation expertise to define the process variables, then run the simulation program. A secondary objective is to combine in one system the key functions required by a manufacturing engineer or manager, such as the operational (real time), statistical, and financial aspects. And also makes those function modules easy to understand and user-friendly. The integrated simulator can use animation to visualize an actual production line. A case study has been developed to verify and validate the work done.
