Friend dissimilarity and undesirable individual attributes have been hypothesized to predict friendship dissolution. The present study tests each as predictors of adolescent friendship dissolution. A sample of 410 U.S. adolescents participated in a total of 573 reciprocated friendships originating in the 7th grade. These friendships were followed annually from 8th-12th grade to determine when each friendship dissolved. In the 7th grade, participants completed a peernomination inventory, and teachers completed a survey of each participant’s school competence. Discrete-time survival analyses used 7th grade friend dissimilarity and individual characteristics of sex, age, ethnicity, number of friends, peer acceptance, peer rejection, leadership, physical aggression, relational aggression, peer victimization, and school competence as predictors of the occurrence and timing of friendship dissolution. Friendships originating in the 7th grade were at greatest risk for dissolution during the first year. Only 1 percent of friendships that started in the 7th grade lasted 5 years. Friend dissimilarity on sex, peer acceptance, physical aggression, and school competence predicted friendship dissolution. At each grade, the odds of friendship dissolution were higher for friends dissimilar on these characteristics. Individual characteristics failed to predict friendship dissolution. The findings suggest compatibility is a function of similarity between friends rather than the presence or absence of a specific individual trait. Adolescents seeking friendships with individuals dissimilar from them on school-related characteristics risk suffering the downside of dissimilarity, namely rapid friendship dissolution.

Show moreTheorists and researchers have emphasized the importance of interactive peer play for children’s social-emotional and cognitive development. Children from low socioeconomic backgrounds are at increased risk for social-emotional and cognitive difficulties. Therefore, it is important to determine the causes of interactive peer play, particularly in a high-risk sample of Head Start preschoolers. Overactive behavior at the beginning of the preschool year has been shown to negatively predict changes in interactive play between the beginning and end of the preschool year. However, possible mechanisms of this association have been underexplored. The main purpose of this study will be to determine whether peer rejection mediates the association between overactive behavior and changes in interactive play and whether mediation is conditional on children’s school readiness. If it is found that moderated mediation exists for overactive children with low school readiness, children who present both of these characteristics at the beginning of the preschool year should be provided with preventative support.

Show moreThe current study examined the homophilic processes of selection and socialization in same-sex adolescent friendships across a 3-year period. The framework of the actor-partner interdependence model for distinguishable dyads was the main analytic technique, an improvement over previous analysis methods which often did not allow for simultaneous exploration of selection and socialization. Within the friendships, adolescents were distinguished based on their general peer acceptance levels, and similarity was assessed for three behaviors: deviant behavior, depression, and achievement motivation. Results showed evidence of both selection and socialization for deviant behavior and achievement motivation, but not for depression. Furthermore, partner influence paths suggested that more accepted friends typically exerted more influence on less accepted friends. Gender also moderated results, with girls tending to have stronger effects than boys.

Show moreAdolescent orientation toward achievement is hypothesized to be composed of motivation, school achievement, and family values. Previous studies suggest that ability and effort, internal and external orientations, and the intellectual and cultural environment of the family were found to affect adolescent orientation toward achievement. A study was conducted to further explore these proposed components of achievement and reveal the origins, influences, and outcomes of achievement orientation. African-American, Anglo-American, and Hispanic-American sixth grade students were administered multiple questionnaires that addressed different aspects of achievement orientation. After focus groups identified any biased and confusing items, factor analyses were conducted on the instruments. Both the original and revised subscales were correlated with academic achievement outcome variables (i.e., cumulative grade point average, SAT math scores, SAT reading scores, socioeconomic status). Using GPA as the primary outcome variable, Hotelling T-tests between the original and revised subscales revealed that overall the revised subscales were more strongly related to GPA across subsamples than the originals. Furthermore, linear regression analysis demonstrated that intrinsically-oriented subscales and subscales related to boredom significantly contributed to the prediction of GPA for Anglo-Americans and African-Americans, but only a subscale related to unknown control over achievement contributed to the prediction of GPA for Hispanic-Americans. However, post-hoc analyses revealed intrinsically-oriented items as having the strongest relationship with GPA across subsamples. The results both supported and expanded upon the literature relating to achievement orientation.

It was hypothesized that, with age, adolescent's relations with parents would become less close and more mutual, while adolescent relations with peers and romantic partners would become closer with age. It was also hypothesized that subjects who have closer relationships with romantic partners would also have more mutual relationships with romantic partners. Results indicated that adolescents relations with parents became closer, but not more mutual, with age. An I-States as Objects Analysis (ISOA: Bergman, 1998) identified seven distinct conflict patterns in parent-adolescent relationships: amiable, squabbling, discordant, hostile, labile, tranquil, and avoidant. These groups exhibited structural and interindividual stability, with groups characterized by constructive conflict processes demonstrating more stability than adolescents in groups characterized by non-constructive conflict processes. ISOA procedures failed to identify coherent adolescent adjustment groups. Person-oriented analyses indicated adolescents in the amiable, labile, and tranquil groups tended to have the best adjustment outcomes, followed by adolescents in the discordant and avoidant groups, with the worst adjustment outcomes reserved for adolescents in the squabbling and hostile groups. Variable-oriented analyses indicated that conflict rate and relationship negativity predicted concurrent and subsequent adolescent adjustment; behavior problems predicted concurrent and subsequent characteristics of parent-adolescent conflict. Person-oriented failed to reveal statistically significant associations involving change in parent-adolescent conflict and adolescent adjustment aver time. Variable-oriented analyses indicated adolescent adjustment predicted changes in parent-adolescent conflict variables more consistently than parent-adolescent conflict predicted changes in adolescent adjustment variables.

(2) Do perceptions of mother-child relationship quality differ for adolescents with and without clinical problems? (3) Do family characteristics moderate differences between clinical and nonclinical youth in motherchild of conflict? (4) Do family characteristics moderate differences between clinical and nonclinical youth in mother-child relationship quality? The results demonstrated that the clinical group reported more conflicts, greater affect, and less post-conflict interaction than those of the nonclinical group. The clinical group reported higher negativity than the nonclinical group. In addition, levels of positivity were higher for the nonclinical group than for the clinical group.

For those high in positivity during the 6th grade, positivity remained stable from 6th to 8th grade, while for those low in positivity during the 6th grade, positivity decreased substantially during this period. In addition, an examination of the links between the relationship features and adjustment measures, such as internalizing and externalizing problems, found that models with initial rates of the relationships predicting changes in adjustment were ideal in comparison to models with both initial rates of and changes in relationships linked to changes in adjustment.

Friend reports ofboth positive (social support) and negative features of friendship, self-reports of two adjustment variables (internalizing problems and externalizing problems), and self-reports of three dimensions of self-esteem (global selfworth, behavioral conduct esteem, and close friendship esteem) were examined at two time periods approximately one year apart. Principal findings were that grade 6 friendship negativity was inversely associated with grade 7 self-esteem, and positively associated with grade 7 internalizing problems and externalizing problems, in the boys' model but not girls' model. Chi-square difference testing confirmed a significant difference between these paths in the girls' model and these paths in the boys' model.

The degree of influence, however varies as a function of individual characteristics such as peer acceptance (Laursen, Hafen, Kerr, and Stattin, 2012) and age (Popp et al., 2008). The present study examines whether differences in influence extend to perceptions of friendship quality. Using a sample of 764 Swedish adolescents involved in stable samesex reciprocal best friend relationships that lasted at least one year, analyses used distinguishable dyad actor-partner interdependence model (APIM) analyses (Kenny, Kashy, & Cook, 2006) to track influence over two years of the friendship. More satisfied friends were more influential than less satisfied friends on intoxication frequency and truancy. The findings of this study indicate that influence accompanies perceptions of quality. Those with higher perceptions of quality exhibit more influence on friends who perceive relatively lower quality.

Variable-oriented research has linked adolescent popularity with both positive and negative adjustment outcomes. Popularity may be better understood with reference to types or subgroups of similar individuals, identified through person-oriented approaches. Resource Control Theory (RCT: Hawley, 1999) posits three distinct types of popular adolescents: coercive, prosocial, and bistrategic. The existence and adjustment correlates of the prosocial and coercive groups have been well-established, but little evidence supports the existence of a bistrategic popular group of adolescents, and even less is known about their adjustment correlates. The present study aims to confirm the existence of the popularity groups hypothesized by RCT and to identify group differences in social adjustment and problem behaviors. A sample of 568 adolescents (n = 288 girls, 280 boys; M age = 12.50) completed peer nomination procedures and self-report questionnaires in the Fall and Spring of the 7th and 8th grades. Longitudinal latent profile analyses classified adolescents into profile groups on the basis of initial physical aggression, relational aggression, and prosocial behavior, and four time points of popularity spanning the 7th and 8th grades. Repeated measures ANOVAs examined profile group differences in social adjustment (peer acceptance, peer rejection, physical victimization, relational victimization, and preference for solitude) and problem behaviors (disruptiveness and delinquency) across the 7th and 8th grades. Results indicate that adolescents fall into one of four distinct groups: aggressive popular, prosocial popular, bistrategic popular, and average. Bistrategic popular adolescents evinced positive social adjustment, exhibiting the highest levels of popularity and peer acceptance and the lowest levels of peer rejection, victimization, and preference for solitude. Despite their social skill advantages, bistrategic popular adolescents were also at risk for problem behaviors. Bistrategic popular adolescents scored above average on problem behaviors, including physical and relational aggression, disruptiveness, and delinquency. Bistrategic popular adolescents successfully navigate the social world in a manner that both offers hope for positive long-term adjustment and concern for the same.

This study tests pathways posited by the failure model, examining direct and indirect longitudinal effects. Direct effects models examined associations between reactive aggression and internalizing problems, reactive aggression and peer rejection, and peer rejection and internalizing symptoms. A mediation model examined the indirect effect of reactive aggression to internalizing symptoms, via peer rejection. Because distinct components of the failure model are presumed to share genetic influences, removing potential genetic contributions is important when examining the environmental influences over developmental pathways posited by the model. To this end, longitudinal tests were conducted with traditional (non-genetically controlled) and MZ twin difference (genetically controlled) designs. The latter disentangled nonshared environment effects from those for genetic factors from environmental factors.

Adolescent loneliness is particularly problematic, due to the rapid changes that take place in the peer social world (Laursen & Hartl, 2013). Prior evidence ties loneliness to low group status and victimization (Asher & Paquette, 2003), but we do not fully understand the transmission mechanisms. A full longitudinal mediation design (Fritz & MacKinnon, 2012) was used to test the hypotheses that social withdrawal mediates the association from loneliness to changes in peer status and peer difficulties victimization among adolescents. Results indicated that the longitudinal associations between loneliness and peer outcomes were mediated by social withdrawal. Successful engagement with peers is vital to navigating the complex social world of adolescence, thus the results provide an impetus for aiding lonely adolescents in improving their social connections.

Show moreThis study was designed to investigate friend influence on academic achievement and task avoidance during middle childhood in a sample of 794 participants in 397 stable same-sex friendship dyads (205 girl dyads and 192 boy dyads) from four municipalities in Finland: two in Central Finland, one in Western Finland, and one in Eastern Finland. Longitudinal data were collected during the spring of 3rd grade and 4th grade and reports were available from both members of each friendship dyad. The Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM; Kenny, Kashy & Cook, 2006) was used with a single sample of participants to estimate friend influence on academic achievement and task avoidance between two types of friendship dyads: (1) dyads that were distinguishable as a function of relative math achievement and relative peer acceptance and (2) dyads that were indistinguishable as a function of relative math achievement and relative peer acceptance. The results demonstrate that when friends are distinguished by math achievement the high achiever influences the low achiever’s math achievement, but not the reverse. When friends are distinguishable by peer acceptance the high accepted partner influences the low accepted partner’s math achievement, but not the reverse. When friends are indistinguishable on the basis of math achievement and peer acceptance there is mutual influence on math achievement. There was no evidence of friend influence on task avoidance. There was no evidence of friend influence from an individual’s own task avoidance predicting changes in friend math achievement, except among dyads that could not be distinguished on the basis of math achievement. Math achievement predicted within-individual changes in task avoidance for all friendship dyads, except those that could not be distinguished by relative math achievement. The findings suggest that friends influence math achievement during middle childhood. Furthermore, when friends are distinguished, relative math achievement and peer acceptance determines who is influencing whom within a friendship dyad. The use of the APIM for distinguishable and indistinguishable dyads on a single sample of participants illustrates that it is not sufficient to ignore differentiating features between friends, or to discard friendships that are more similar. Implications for teaching strategies and classroom interventions are discussed.

A sample of 410 adolescents (n=201 males, 209 females; M age=13.20 years) participated in 573 reciprocated friendships originating in the 7th grade which were followed from 8th-12th grade. Discrete-time survival analyses evaluated grade 7 dyadic and individual characteristics (sex, age, ethnicity, number of friends, peer acceptance, peer rejection, leadership, and school competence) as predictors of the occurrence and timing of friendship dissolution. Dissimilarity in sex, peer acceptance, and school competence and similarity in leadership predicted higher rates of friendship dissolution; individual characteristics were not significant predictors. Adolescents seeking friendships with more skilled individuals risk suffering the downside of dissimilarity, namely dissolution.
