Show moreNiche partitioning mechanisms may be used by closely related, sympatric species to reduce competition. We examine two dimensions of niche partitioning (diet and temporal) amongst the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) and the Atlantic longarm octopus (Macrotritopus defilippi), which spatially overlap in a South Florida intracoastal habitat. SCUBA is used to collect octopus prey remains and gather supplemental feeding images to determine diets of each species. A 24h octopus monitoring camera records foraging activity times for each species. The common octopus consumes bivalves (49%), gastropods (32%) and crustaceans (19%), and forages at dawn, dusk, and nocturnal hours. The Atlantic longarm octopus consumes crustaceans (89%) and bivalves (11%), and forages during diurnal hours. Results suggest there is diet overlap between species and octopuses use temporal partitioning. This study provides additional findings to cephalopod niche partitioning literature, novel information on the ecology of the Atlantic longarm octopus, and conservation requirements for sand-dwelling species.

Show moreThe current study is presented as an exploratory network analysis of personality psychology using a network composed of 54 source papers and their references. The articles used were papers from the Annual Review of Psychology journal, which dealt with the subject of personality, from 1950 to 2012. References from the source papers were pulled and then mapped onto a network that graphically illustrated the links between different citations. From the network it was possible to deduce, both visually and statistically, distinctively clustered communities, the relative influence of certain psychologists, and the researchers that bridged disciplinary gaps within the field of personality research. By using digital humanities methods such as network analysis it is possible to better understand and articulate the history and growth of personality psychology.

By presenting subjects with various combinations of emotional displays by both male and female candidates, we will be able to see if any gender stereotypes are primed or activated by these displays, and more importantly, the differences in perception of these displays based on the candidate’s gender. For example, if we present the subject with a male candidate who appears aggressive and confrontational, will he be viewed the same way as a female candidate with the same characteristics? Will gender stereotypes cause the female candidate to be perceived more negatively than the male? Previous research has supported the idea that gender stereotypes will effect perception of candidates based on their gender, and this study will help to see if specific stereotypes are primed for application by the subject based on emotional displays.

Podophyllotoxin has been under extensive biochemical investigation since the discovery of its biological activity as a strong microtubule destabilizing mitotic agent. Although these antineoplastic compounds have shown significant activity as cancerous cell growth inhibitors, they lack selectivity and are thus extremely toxic to healthy cells. This has led to a recent interest in the synthesis of Podophyllotoxin analogues in hopes of optimizing the biological selectivity and potency of these semi-synthetic derivatives. The objective of my research in the Roche group is to generate a library of these derivatives for subsequent biological assays to determine their potential as chemotherapeutic agents. In total I have synthesized 22 Podophyllotoxin analogues. Of these 22 derivatives, 14 have been biologically evaluated and 4 were observed to possess promising anti-cancer activity and are currently undergoing further evaluation.

While these instruments are an essential tool for chemists, students often have limited access to quality instruments due to their high cost. The components used to construct visible spectrometers are moderately inexpensive due to recent technological advances, yet instruments remain expensive. The long term goal of this study is to develop a visible spectrometer accessible to students using readily available and inexpensive components. To accomplish this goal, a prototype instrument was calibrated. Resolution was determined by recording data for samples that absorb visible light at specific wavelengths. To assess the utility of the spectrometer for quantitative analysis, signal intensities were obtained as a function of sample concentration.

Show moreThe gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) is considered a threatened species throughout much of its range. Their decline is mainly attributed to habitat fragmentation and destruction. These habitat disturbances commonly favor invasive species such as the red fire ant (Solenopsis invicta). The red fire ant has been detected on aprons of gopher tortoise burrows at the FAU preserve and we would like to evaluate whether the distribution of red fire ants overlaps with that of the tortoises burrows. Ant distribution was accessed at the FAU preserve by running 10 random 100m transect lines and placing sardine baits at every 20m interval. Preliminary data suggests that red fire ants were abundant in 70% of the transects; however, we were unable to establish a direct correlation between the distribution of gopher tortoise burrows and that of red fire ants. The ants were tentatively identified to subfamilies and further identification will be performed.

This oxidation is reversible where methionine sulfoxide reductase (Msr) A and B reduce the S and R enantiomers, respectively. In this study, MsrA and MsrB single deletion lines were exposed to one hour of anoxia and the Drosophila Activity Monitor (DAM) recorded their recovery times. RNA interference (RNAi) lines were used to mimic the effect of these deletion lines by ubiquitously knocking down their expression. My current data indicates that MsrA loss-of-function strains recover significantly faster than the MsrB loss-of-function lines with increasing age. Insight into the roles of Msr genes under anoxic stress could lead to a better understanding of how these genes contribute to aging.

Participants included both males and females from 18-40 years old. For all the bilingual participants L1 was Spanish but they had been schooled mostly in English (L2). The examined language domains included: grammatical and semantic judgment, vocabulary, reading, writing, and fluency of both L1 and L2. It was observed that L2 significantly overwrote L1, becoming the dominant language. Grammatical judgment as well as reading and writing became more accurate, vocabulary was larger, and fluency was greater in English than in Spanish. Interference from English to Spanish in reading, writing and vocabulary was significant, whereas interference in the opposite direction was minimal. Two questions are discussed: the switch of the dominant language from L1 to L2 and the language profile in each one of the two languages.

This computer technology is an expanding field and has a plethora of applications ranging from teaching to the design of new drugs. Molecular modeling allows studying through calculation and visualization of molecular systems varying in size from minute chemical systems to hefty biological ones. The system analyzed in this study is that of gp120, the envelope glycoprotein on HIV-1 essential for viral entry into cells. HIV-1’s invasive success can be attributed to its ability to conformationally mask itself from the immune system. It achieves this because of the highly glycosylated surface of gp120. Using HyperChem Release 7, Visual Molecular Dynamics (VMD) 1.9.1, and NAMD 2.9, the glycosylated surface of gp120 and its molecular dynamics were examined to confirm its effectiveness.

I evaluated college students using a scanning bed and calipers to determine digit ratio. I then measured calf-circumference, MM using bioimpedence technology and MS using a dynamometer for grip strength.

Show moreThe purpose of this research project is to investigate the impact adult day care centers have on cognitively impaired older adults and their caregivers. I extracted data from records of the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center participants who have given consent and attended the center for a minimum of six months. I have discovered that participants benefit from this day center because they experience an improved quality of life, maintain a higher level of functioning, have more opportunities for socialization, and establish friendships and connections. Caregivers of participants enrolled in the day center also benefit because they receive access to caregiver support groups, are temporarily freed from the responsibility to care, and are pleased that participants attend the center and enjoy attending the center. These findings contribute to the current body of research literature that supports the contributions of adult day care centers.

My research documents and categorizes apologies in civil and international conflict over the last few decades to evaluate an apology’s effectiveness at preventing further conflict. I expect the findings to show that cases in which an apology was offered and accepted by both parties will have a lower level of conflict reemergence than cases in which an apology was only offered or only demanded.

Show moreExperience plays a critical role in maturation of cortical circuits. In visual cortex, experience-dependent development has been linked to the maturation of inhibitory interneurons. Parvalbumin-containing (PV+) interneurons, a subtype of GABAergic interneurons, play an important role in cortical circuit function; however, it remains unknown how visual experience shapes their organization. We used immunohistochemistry to observe the organization of PV+ expression in visual cortex through visual maturity. Before visual experience, PV+ cell bodies and processes are most pronounced in layer 5, less in layer 2/3, and generally lacking in layer 4. Within 3 days of the onset of visual experience, PV+ organization undergoes a major shift, with PV+ expression found throughout layers 2-6. We performed dark rearing which determined these morphological changes are due to visual experience. This rapid change in parvalbumin organization may play a role in functional changes associated with the onset of visual experience.

In his acclaimed 2000 novel, The Feast of the Goat, Nobel laureate, Mario Vargas Llosa, a Peruvian who has written about Latin American dictators, creates Urania Cabral, a 49-year-old émigrée who at 14 left her nation after becoming Trujillo’s sexual victim. The novel, told from many perspectives, focuses on her return, the dictator’s last day, and the story of the four conspirators waiting to ambush the presidential bullet-proof car on that fateful night of May 30th 1961. My study analyzes the complex narrative structures (Bakhtin’s heteroglossia) of the novel as masterful “rupturing” techniques. Through these, the reader pieces together the broken body politic of a traumatized nation as Urania reconstructs in painful detail how the impotent dictator digitally rapes her to ensure her body bears the mark of his brutal anger and frustration.
