Show moreThe focus of this research is concerned with performing forecasting in technoeconomic contexts using a set of certain novel artificial neural networks (ANNs). Relevant efforts in general, entail the task of quantitatively estimating the details about the likelihood of future events (or unknown outcomes/effects) based on past and current information on the observed events (or known causes). Commensurate with the scope and objectives of the research, the specific topics addressed are as follows: A review on various methods adopted in technoeconomic forecasting and identified are econometric projections that can be used for forecasting via artificial neural network (ANN)-based simulations Developing and testing a compatible version of ANN designed to support a dynamic sigmoidal (squashing) function that morphs to the stochastical trends of the ANN input. As such, the network architecture gets pruned for reduced complexity across the span of iterative training schedule leading to the realization of a constructive artificial neural-network (CANN). Formulating a training schedule on an ANN with sparsely-sampled data via sparsity removal with cardinality enhancement procedure (through Nyquist sampling) and invoking statistical bootstrapping technique of resampling applied on the cardinality-improved subset so as to obtain an enhanced number of pseudoreplicates required as an adequate ensemble for robust training of the test ANN: The training and prediction exercises on the test ANN corresponds to optimally elucidating output predictions in the context of the technoeconomics framework of the power generation considered Prescribing a cone-of-error to alleviate over- or under-predictions toward prudently interpreting the results obtained; and, squeezing the cone-of-error to get a final cone-of-forecast rendering the forecast estimation/inference to be more precise Designing an ANN-based fuzzy inference engine (FIE) to ascertain the ex ante forecast details based on sparse sets of ex post data gathered in technoeconomic contexts - Involved thereof a novel method of .fusing fuzzy considerations and data sparsity.Lastly, summarizing the results with essential conclusions and identifying possible research items for future efforts identified as open-questions.

Show moreThis study is a focused effort on elucidating the performance aspects of modern, handheld wireless devices and associated mobile network services. Specifically addressed thereof are: (i) Assessing the performance details on certain hardware sections of smart handheld devices and (ii) determining the performance profile of market penetration considerations vis-à-vis provisioning mobile networks. To meet the scope of this research, the projected efforts are exercised in compiling relevant literature and deciding the said hardware and technoeconomic performance issues. Hence, written in two parts, Part A is devoted to hardware performance details of smart, handheld devices relevant to (a) delay issues in PCB layouts; (b) crosstalk problems at the baseband level (audio/multimedia) using EMI concepts and (c) ascertaining non-catastrophic EMP/EMI effects at the RF-sections so as to implement protection strategies via compensating networks. Part B is concerned with the technoeconomics of wireless networks in supporting mobile (handheld devices). Correspondingly, two market related considerations versus service performance details are considered. The first one refers to deducing a relative performance index that includes technology (mobile speed) details plus economics profiles of the users in the service area. The second task refers to elucidating a performance index of such services in terms of hedonic pricing heuristics. The theoretical aspects of the test studies as above are supplemented with experimental and/or simulation details as appropriate. Hence, the efficacy of performance details are discussed in real-world applications. Lastly, possible research items for future studies are identified as open-questions.

The performance outcome o f the design is verified with ADS™ RF simulation tool. Essentially the thesis offers an outline on the Bluetooth™ technology and its RF front-end component requirements. The relevant specifications of the designed front-end blocks are identified and are in concurrence with CMOS technology based topologies. For each block identified, both circuit parameters and device characteristics are chosen as per available design formulations and empirical results in open literature. Specifically, the topology sections designed include antenna input matching, transmit/receive switch, necessary filters, low noise amplifier, mixer and phase lock loop units. The numerical TM, (designed) circuit parameters are duly addressed in appropriate ADS simulation tools and performance evaluations are conducted. Observed results including any deviations are identified and reported. The thesis concludes with a summary and indicates direction for future work.

Show moreThis thesis is concerned with the measurement of magnetic field components induced above the earth's surface by three classes of high-voltage power transmission lines supplemented by algorithmic formulations: The first system refers to three-phase lines housed in a plastic (PVC) conduit, buried directly in the soil or encased in a concrete duct. The second category refers to a similar buried system, but encased in an iron/steel pipe. The third transmission line is an overhead three-phase system. Using boundary-value approach, approximate (closed-form) expressions are obtained for the magnetic field above the earth's surface caused by each of the systems indicated. Calculated results are compared with experimental data compiled from field experiments.

As a result, the so-called Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) strategies implemented on electric utilities are also undergoing modifications. Such modifications evolve from the imminent considerations to minimize the revenue requirements and maximize electrical system reliability vis-a-vis capacity-additions (viewed as potential investments). IRP modifications also provide service-design bases to meet the customer needs towards profitability. The purpose of this research as deliberated in this dissertation is to propose procedures for optimal IRP intended to expand generation facilities of a power system over a stretched period of time. Relevant topics addressed in this research towards IRP optimization are as follows: (1) Historical prospective and evolutionary aspects of power system production-costing models and optimization techniques; (2) A survey of major U.S. electric utilities adopting IRP under changing socioeconomic environment; (3) A new technique designated as the Segmentation Method for production-costing via IRP optimization; (4) Construction of a fuzzy relational database of a typical electric power utility system for IRP purposes; (5) A genetic algorithm based approach for IRP optimization using the fuzzy relational database.

Show moreThis thesis addresses a passive, economical strategy towards enhancing the security feature of conventional plastic cards by embedding a set of electromagnetic (EM) material that emulates an invisible "watermarking". It is an overlay strategy to prevailing security measures. Proposed method consists of incorporating (embedding) a set of metallic (foil-like) sheet of high-mu material or high-conductivity metal, or a conducting-fiber interwoven fabric. The test card when exposed to a suitable excitation of high frequency EM excitation (with or without superimposing a static magnetic field), the plastic part yields a distinct path-reluctance to the EM energy when compared to the embedded EM material section. Sensing the resulting EM reaction with an appropriate circuit, delivers an output signal depicting the presence of the embedded "watermarking" and any encoded signature in it. The underlying concept is theoretically analyzed, relevant card-reading methods are suggested and prototype (experimental) results are presented.

The maximization of entropy refers to maximizing Shannon information pertinent to the difference in the output and the teacher value of an ANN. Apart from the Shannon format of the negative entropy formulation a set of Csiszar family functions are also considered. The error-measures obtained, via these maximum entropy formulations are adopted as cost-functions in the training and prediction schedules of a test perceptron. A comparative study is done on the performance of these cost-functions in facilitating the test network towards optimization so as to predict a standard teacher function sin (.). The study is also extended to predict a parameter (such as cell delay variation) in a practical ATM telecommunication system. Concluding remarks and scope for an extended study are also indicated.

Show moreThe research proposed and elaborated in this dissertation is concerned with the development of new decision algorithms for hard handoff strategies in mobile communication systems. Specifically, the research tasks envisaged include the following: (1) Use of information-theoretics based statistical distance measures as a metric for hard handoff decisions; (2) A study to evaluate the log-likelihood criterion towards decision considerations to perform the hard handoff; (3) Development of a statistical model to evaluate optimum instants of measurements of the metric used for hard handoff decision. The aforesaid objectives refer to a practical scenario in which a mobile station (MS) traveling away from a serving base station (BS-I) may suffer communications impairment due to interference and shadowing affects, especially in an urban environment. As a result, it will seek to switch over to another base station (BS-II) that facilitates a stronger signal level. This is called handoff procedure. (The hard handoff refers to the specific case in which only one base station serves the mobile at the instant of handover). Classically, the handoff decision is done on the basis of the difference between received signal strengths (RSS) from BS-I and BS-II. The algorithms developed here, in contrast, stipulate the decision criterion set by the statistical divergence and/or log-likelihood ratio that exists between the received signals. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the relative efficacy of the conventional and proposed algorithms in reference to: (i) Minimization of unnecessary handoffs ("ping-pongs"); (ii) Minimization of delay in handing over; (iii) Ease of implementation and (iv) Minimization of possible call dropouts due to ineffective handover envisaged. Simulated results with data commensurate with practical considerations are furnished and discussed. Background literature is presented in the introductory chapter and scope for future work is identified via open questions in the concluding chapter.

Algorithms on the CDV statistics are derived and the lower and upper bounds of the statistics are obtained via simulations in respect of CBR and VBR traffics. These bounds bounds are useful in the cell-admission control (CAC) strategies adapted in ATM transmissions. Inferential remarks indicating the effects of traffic parameters (such as bandwidth, burstiness etc.) on the values of the statistical bounds are presented, and scope for further work is indicated.

Show moreThe research addressed refers to a study on the electromagnetic performance aspects of body-worn radio units operating in the presence of scatterers in close proximity, using analytical, numerical, and experimental methods. The application potentials of such methods include evaluating the integrity of radio units such as cell phones. Consistent with the scope of the study above, considered in this research are specific details on analytical and numerical modeling of the effects of a nearby conducting cylindrical object on the electromagnetic field near a human-model phantom. Calculations are performed using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method. Considered are various separations of the body wearing the test radio unit from the proximal object and polarization of the incident wave. An anechoic chamber and the test setup used for the measurement of EM field amplitudes near a saline-water phantom are described. Within the anechoic chamber, a small shielded loop is used as a field measurement probe and is positioned near the test phantom. The field probe orientation was in the vertical plane for characterizing the prevailing electromagnetic field intensity. This study indicates that variations in the field amplitude near the phantom occur, which are responsive to phantom rotation and measurement distance from the phantom. The electromagnetic field amplitude decreases rapidly with increasing distance between the probe and the surface of the phantom. The analysis is also extended to examine the electromagnetic field distribution in the gap between a human body phantom model and a nearby conducting cylinder. An appropriate three-dimensional FDTD method is presented and applied to a near-field problem of analyzing the influence of proximal conductive objects on fields near a phantom wearing an RF unit.

Show moreThis research refers to studies on information-theoretic (IT) aspects of data-sequence patterns and developing thereof discriminant algorithms that enable distinguishing the features of underlying sequence patterns having characteristic, inherent stochastical attributes. The application potentials of such algorithms include bioinformatic data mining efforts. Consistent with the scope of the study as above, considered in this research are specific details on information-theoretics and entropy considerations vis-a-vis sequence patterns (having stochastical attributes) such as DNA sequences of molecular biology. Applying information-theoretic concepts (essentially in Shannon's sense), the following distinct sets of metrics are developed and applied in the algorithms developed for data-sequence pattern-discrimination applications: (i) Divergence or cross-entropy algorithms of Kullback-Leibler type and of general Czizar class; (ii) statistical distance measures; (iii) ratio-metrics; (iv) Fisher type linear-discriminant measure and (v) complexity metric based on information redundancy. These measures are judiciously adopted in ascertaining codon-noncodon delineations in DNA sequences that consist of crisp and/or fuzzy nucleotide domains across their chains. The Fisher measure is also used in codon-noncodon delineation and in motif detection. Relevant algorithms are used to test DNA sequences of human and some bacterial organisms. The relative efficacy of the metrics and the algorithms is determined and discussed. The potentials of such algorithms in supplementing the prevailing methods are indicated. Scope for future studies is identified in terms of persisting open questions.

(ii) Analysis of the logistic growth of output versus input values in the neural complex (real and artificial) under the consideration that the boundaries of the sets constituting the input and output entities are crisp and/or fuzzy. (iii) Construction of a set of cross-entropy error-metrics (known as Csiszar's measures) deduced in terms of the parameters pertinent to a perceptron topology and elucidation of their relative effectiveness in training the network optimally towards convergence. (iv) Presenting the methods of symmetrizing and balancing the aforesaid error-entropy measures (in the information-theoretic plane) so as to make them usable as error-metrics in the test domain. (v) Description and analysis of the dynamics of neural learning process in the information-theoretic plane for both crisp and fuzzy attributes of input values. Relevant to these topics portraying the studies on nonlinear activity and cross-entropy considerations vis-a-vis neural networks, newer and/or exploratory inferences are made, logical conclusions are enumerated and relative discussions are presented along with the scope for future research to be pursued.

Show moreThe research addressed and presented in this dissertation can be placed within the broad scope of telecommunications technoeconomics. The relevant efforts include the subject-matter of identifying the issues posed by emerging technologies, related revenue considerations and environmental issues in modern telecommunications practice specific to service providers' perspectives. The topic-wise problems studied and analyzed are as follows: (1) A comprehensive portrayal of managerial concerns and considerations on the technoeconomical perspectives vis-a-vis modern telecommunications; (2) Relevant analytical studies pertinent to: (1) "Greenfield starts" in a fresh, telecommunications deployment in a virgin service zone; (2) Embedded architectures; (3) Technology enhancements; (4) Environmental issues. The greenfield effort is analyzed to portray the feasibility of achieving technoeconomically optimal alternative designs. The embedded architecture refers to the prevailing infrastructure and their optimal usage is indicated via an arbitrated traffic-sharing technique. Concerning technology enhancements, "all-optical" technology is indicated as the ultimate goal. However, in the interim period, the optimal use of transitory technology such xDSL, MPLS, and others, is suggested and studied. Lastly, the environmental implications that coexist with technoeconomical impacts on modern telecommunications deployment are analyzed.

Show moreThe research addressed in this study and deliberated in the dissertation is broadly tied to finding hybrid methods of diversity compatible for modern wireless applications. The hybrid strategy advocated thereof involves a combined use of space- (antenna and polarization), frequency-, and time-diversity schemes in a judicious manner so as to realize a desirable BER versus Eb/No performance across RF links that face multipath and other unwanted EM artifacts. The underlying reason for the hybrid scheme as above is to replace multiple-antenna based transreceive diversity. Such multiple antennas would otherwise require large base station real estate and may not be compatible for hand-held (space-constrained) RF units. On the contrary, use of hybrid schemes would restrict multiple number of antennas and conserves the space. After analyzing a set of plausible techniques of hybrid diversity compatible for modern wireless techniques, a focused study has been done on polarization-sense (PS) antenna diversity scheme. Its fruitful application for indoor systems (like Bluetooth(TM)/ZigBee(TM)) against multipath effects is demonstrated via simulation and experimental studies. Further, the PS-antenna diversity is shown to offer improved BER versus Eb/N o performance in pilot channels used in CDMA2000 systems. Also, such PS-diversity is shown to help improving the GPS receiver performance under RFI/jamming environment. The technique and heuristics proposed towards the PS-antenna diversity scheme imply novel and hitherto unexplored efforts in wireless communications. Lastly the dissertation concludes summarizing the results and offers open-questions for further studies.

Show moreBy revisiting the popular framework of depicting neuronal (collective) activities as analogous to Ising's spin-glass theory of interacting magnetic spins, the contradictions that coexist with such an analogy are extracted and discussed. To alleviate such contradictions, an alternative strategy of equating the neuronal interactions to the partially anisotropic nematic phase of disorder pertaining to liquid crystals is proposed. Hence, the extent of anisotropy in the neuronal system, quantified in terms of an order-function, is specified to elucidate the nonlinear squashing action of the input-output relations in a neuronal cell. The relevant approach thereof, is based on Langevin's theory considerations as applied to dipole molecules. Further, in view of the stochastical properties due to the inherent disorder associated with the neuronal assembly, the progression of state-transitions across the interconnected cells is modeled as a momentum flow relevant to particle dynamics. Hence, corresponding wave mechanics attributions of such a collective movement of state-transition activity are described in terms of a probabilistic wave function. Lastly, the stochastical aspects of noise-perturbed neuronal dynamics are studied via Fokker-Planck equation representing the Langevin-type relaxational (nonlinear) process associated with the neuronal states. On each of these topics portraying the stochastical characteristics of the neuronal assembly and its activities, newer and/or more exploratory inferences are made, logical conclusions are enumerated and relevant discussions are presented along with the scope for future research to be pursued.

Show moreThis dissertation is concerned primarily with the analytical modeling of a class of electromagnetic composite materials using the concepts of stochastical mixture theory, principles of electromagnetics and neuromimetic considerations. The global behavior of the test composite is ascertained in terms of the constitutive relations of the material parameters (having stochastical attributions) and the intramaterial hierarchy is modeled as massively interconnected, interacting units depicting such systems as mimetics of neural networks. Pertinent research efforts enclave the following specific tasks: (i) Modeling a multi-constituent electromagnetic composite medium in terms of the characteristics of its individual constituents and their spatial (random or orderly) dispositions. (ii) Assessment of nonspherical particulate effects (in terms of the stochastical attributes) on the global response of such composite materials. (iii) Evaluation of interparticle interactions and their implicit effects on the effective electromagnetic properties of the composite media. (iv) Assaying the transitional behavior of the test composites and, (v) modeling electromagnetic composites as neuromimetics correlating their effective material characteristics to the corresponding state-transitional response of a massively interconnected neural network. Results arising from these theoretical considerations are compared with data compiled via experimental studies performed (where feasible) or otherwise correlated with theoretical and/or experimental results available elsewhere in the literature. Specific experimental efforts carried out refer to piezoelectric rubber composites and their application in controlling acoustic beamforming via electrical 'pinch off' (which mimics the inhibitory response in a neuronal cell); as well as exclusive experimental tasks to verify the transitional lossy behavior model developed presently using a set of fast-ion conductor composites and dielectric-plus-conductor mixtures. Lastly, inferential conclusions are presented and discussed with an outline on the scope of extensions to the present work.
