- Brand Name vs. Generic Medications.
- Creator
- Warrayat, Reem, Kennedy, Ashley Graham, Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College
- Abstract/Description

I will be looking in depth between the similarities and differences of brand name and generic medications. I will see what makes one a brand name and one a generic and how similar and different the drugs can be from each other before they are considered an entirely different drug. After that, I will talk about the FDA guidelines, and how my research shows evidence for something entirely different. Finally, I will then look at case studies, my own experience, and surveys to see which drug is...

In this thesis, I first describe three strategies used around the world to encourage or enforce vaccination. I then review the vaccine standards of both the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization and present a number of common reasons used by individuals to justify vaccine refusal. I then outline a number of ethical tenets that can be used to evaluate vaccine policies and apply those principles to the policies described above. In this evaluation, I assert...

I then outline a number of ethical tenets that can be used to evaluate vaccine policies and apply those principles to the policies described above. In this evaluation, I assert that ethical vaccine policies should not seek either to punish individuals for exercising their right to autonomy or to coerce them with threats. Rather, they should attempt to ensure the maintenance of public safety among vaccine compliant individuals and those who are unable to vaccinate for health-related reasons rather than elective ones.

Summary measures of population health provide a way to present information about both mortality and morbidity of a given population as a single metric. This project utilized gretl, an open-source statistical package, to model the data using ordinary least squares (OLS) in order to determine if there is a correlation between health, which was quantified using summary measures of population health, and child labor. The regression analysis showed that there is a significant correlation between child labor and health adjusted life expectancy (HALE) at birth, but not between child labor and disability adjusted life years (DALYs).

Show moreThe practice of medicine is changing with the development of new Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods of machine learning. Coupled with rapid improvements in computer processing, these AI-based systems are already improving the accuracy and efficiency of diagnosis and treatment across various specializations. The increasing focus of AI in radiology has led to some experts suggesting that someday AI may even replace radiologists. These suggestions raise the question of whether AI-based systems will eventually replace physicians in some specializations or will augment the role of physicians without actually replacing them. To assess the impact on physicians this thesis seeks to better understand this technology and how it is transforming medicine. To that end this thesis researches the role of AI-based systems in performing medical work in specializations including radiology, pathology, ophthalmology, and cardiology. It concludes that AI-based systems will augment physicians and are unlikely to replace the traditional physician–patient relationship.

There are still diseases in our current society such as pain in which the diagnosis is heavily reliant on the information that is given by the patient. With that much trust in just the patient, there is a possibility of the patients not being able to describe the symptoms properly or leaving information out from their history leading to an incorrect diagnosis. With that much trust in just the patient, there is a possibility of the patients not being able to describe the symptoms properly or leaving information out from their history leading to an incorrect diagnosis. The most common form of treatment for pain is prescribing opioids, a schedule II controlled substance. In this essay, opioid mechanisms, guidelines for prescribing opioids and addiction as a result will be discussed. The current prescribing federal and state laws will be evaluated. In this thesis, I will argue that in order for patients suffering from pain to lead a healthier and safer life not only should prescribing laws be altered in which alternatives to opioids are heavily considered, multiple doctors should be consulted before a the prescription is written and a better patient monitoring/screening system should be in place.

There needs to be data that can clearly draw the line between antibiotic exposure and the growth of antibiotic resistance. To construct the data, scientists need to test various antibiotics against various bacteria and closely monitor the growth and spread of antibiotic resistance. The data set should include data on the types of antibiotics tested, the species of bacteria used for experimentation, the dosage of the antibiotics used, and the time it takes for the growth of resistance. Furthermore, this data set could also provide a better understanding of the interactions between different classes of antibiotics and different species of bacteria. The data set will produce information that will help develop alternative methods to combat antibiotic resistance.

This in turn may affect the accuracy of current titles as they potentially neglect to regard experience and only represent education. This study will attempt to determine if titles affect how nurses at different levels are treated by colleagues. Through analysis of prior studies and interviews with individuals currently in the nursing field, the overall experiences will be evaluated as well as any programs that have been or could be implemented to facilitate a positive and productive workplace environment. While it is unrealistic to change education-based titles, programs can be implemented within the workplace to foster positive professional relationships and give employees a better understanding of each individual’s role so that the nursing environment is a team effort and not a competition

Show moreThis thesis addresses the level of uncertainty in medical evidence and practice and asks if this level is acceptable. Current medical standards consider randomized controlled trials (RCTs) as the best, and most certain, form of evidence. Similarly, medical practice largely relies on differential diagnosis and diagnostic testing to diagnose patients. I will argue that RCTs as well as differential diagnosis and diagnostic testing contribute to uncertainty in medical practice. In the former, uncertainty stems from lack of representation, elimination of confounding factors, among other issues; while in the latter, uncertainty originates from technological limitations, similarity or variability in presentation, and number of diagnostic possibilities. I will argue that uncertainty in medical evidence and practice can and should be reduced. This can be done by expanding RCT testing and improving it by adding required mechanistic evidence, and by furthering research into better diagnostic technology and training.

I defend this claim via the examination of examples of entrepreneurs and members of the health and science communities, and the services they provide to the public. I show that products and services must have fitting marketing strategies, because if something innovative is developed but is not marketed, it is as if the invention was constructed only in the imagination of the creator.

In this thesis I begin by introducing the Big Bang theory and discussing arguments for and against it. Then, I argue that the Big Bang Theory and the Biblical account of creation align in their descriptions of the origin of the universe. Thus, I ultimately argue that the Big Bang theory and the Biblical account of creation are not mutually exclusive.

The deferral of men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) from donating blood has been a controversial policy since its advent during the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. In my thesis I address this deferral, and evaluate whether or not it is ethical. I begin by introducing the characteristics of HIV, the behaviors associated with HIV transmission, and its association with MSM. Next, I present my arguments that justify the MSM blood donation deferral, while also arguing that the current one-year deferral period in the United States is unethical. My arguments apply ethical principles such as: principles of utilitarianism, harm, precaution, and discrimination. I conclude with a discussion of alternatives to the deferral, and considerations for my suggestion of a new three-month deferral period in the U.S.

Show moreThroughout history, people with disabilities have been treated as moral and social inferiors. Often, those with certain disabilities have been relegated to live lives of segregation, resigned to institutions and facilities because they have been regarded as incapable of making decisions or caring for themselves, or because others, whether family or those in the community, did not want to bear the burden of their presence. I argue that this view of disability as burdensome has resulted in the near 100% termination rate in Iceland in pregnancies found to be chromosomally abnormal. Further, I argue that this negative perception of disability is a result of systematic coercion, and a violation of the ethical principles of autonomy and justice.

Many new techniques and methods call into question ethical standards that have been the norm for many years. Further, these advancements tread into new territory that can be perplexing to many. One such field that has grown by leaps and bounds is the field of reproductive endocrinology. On one hand it has allowed women who have trouble conceiving to become pregnant and has created families where there was little hope before. However, it also has created a minefield of ethical dilemmas. Due to the nature of the field there are a lot of ethical questions regarding the procedures that reproductive endocrinologists perform. Since we are now able to manipulate embryos and potentially change their genetics, people have become worried of the potential repercussions.

This conclusion is important, because this relationship is the cornerstone of medical care and has emotional, physical, and informational impacts on the patient, the physician, and the healthcare system overall. From the analysis of various anecdotes I show that patients often relinquish their autonomy in the presence of medical titles, and that this causes an imbalance in the power dynamics of the physician-patient relationship, which in turn can negatively affect patient care. Finally, I argue that abolishing medical titles would foster an environment where the ethical principles of autonomy and beneficence are carefully balanced and where patients, physicians, and other healthcare professionals can interact as equals in the clinical setting.

I begin by defining “placebo” and “placebo effect” in various contexts, including associated biochemical mechanisms. I then discuss how expectation, conditioning, and patient-physician interactions influence the magnitude of the placebo effect on patients. My research delves into the difficulty of defining and measuring the placebo effect given its subjective nature, and supports the harnessing of this effect as a viable treatment option for certain conditions, including but not limited to depression and pain management. Finally, I address the accompanying ethical concerns of placebo use in clinical practice in addition to potential difficulties with and hindrances to implementation. The ultimate goal of this thesis is to provide a guide for the successful use of placebos in clinical practice, taking into consideration both evidence-based and ethical factors.
